I'm learning how to play bass guitar properly, compared to how i play it now (really crappy), any tips on how to get better quicker (other then playing every single spare moment, which i nearly do now)
-
well before i started learning bass properly, i was experimenting with strumming and playing chords on a bass guitar, i don't know if anyone else has done this, but i couldn't get anything out of it, but im not particulary musically inclined, and as i said, im no good at playing bass anyway.

Learn to play with a plectrum and fingers. Fingers, as a rule, takes more skill - there are of course exceptions.
And my number one tip - don't take any bullshit from guitarists who say bass is easier.
-
well, "Playing" bass and Playing bass are two different things, most of the bassists i know don't do anything interesting, and normally just provide a bottom end for the rythym guitar, i want to do something different on it, and not just play the bottom end, but create something interesting in the song to listen to.

The first thing to be learned is a walking bassline, I feel it's the bassist's E-Chord.

Bass is a total bitch to play and anyone who says guitars are harder has never played a bass and is bullshitting themselves. Seriously.
This thread'll be useful, because I'm pretty... godawfully bad at the bass.
-
guitars are easier to learn but harder to master than basses, I think.
-
ive played for like two years. learn to read music. learn to count. learn to count. learn the bass clef. learn scales. learn to count. learn to subdivide. learn to count. play everyday.

and make sure that when you play it, it goes like
DUH DUHDUHDUH DUH DUH DUHDUH DAAAAh

Or, if you're in a funk band, just play as loud and slappy as possible and hope someone mistakes you for Les Claypool until they realize that you are not a badass.
And I don't necessarily think guitar is all that hard to master, but I guess that depends on your definition of master. I feel that I can play some bitchin' guitar (80's slang words! WOO) and that I can write music that doesn't suck (From my point of view; of course, I'm always right. Always).

I tend to disagree. I play both (not excellent at either) I find that guitars are harder to learn, but easier to master and basses are easier to learn, but harder to master (look at Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Stuart Hamm)

And of course, the late Jaco Pastorius. Because he's amazing. and Geddy Lee.

If you really want to get faster start by learning about three or four jazz scales. Practice these until yo can play them perfectly every time. then use a metronome. Start slow. I mean slow. And slowl build up rythm after you have played the scale perfectly four or five times without messing up. Only go up about ten beats per minute each time. And by the time you are good enough to go 240 bpm on a scale perfectly five times, you can play any speed you want without sounding like crap.
