Title: No Depeche Mode Fans? New album "Playing the Angel"
Post by: Skippdog on 22 Oct 2005, 13:26
I was surprised to see on a forum with such musically inclined individuals to find no discussion of Depeche Mode's new release!

For anyone who was disappointed in Exciter, I think you'll be surprised and blown away by how good this new album is.

You can hear a few songs off the new album on Depeche Mode's MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/depechemode).

Has anyone picked it up yet? Additionally has anyone gotten their tickets for the new tour? :)

I'll be seeing them December 4th in Montreal :D

I have only heard Exciter which I thought was a very good album, though I haven't any to hold up against, but I definitely enjoyed it. If I had money to spare, I would buy it :)

Exciter is pretty much the worst out of their modern albums. That's not to say it's a bad album, because it isn't, it just doesn't stand up to the other stuff.

...such as:

People Are People (1984)
Black Celebration (1986)
Music for the Masses (1987)
Violator (1990)
Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993)
Ultra (1997)

:D :D :D

I've liked depeche mode since I was 13, and I always hid it from people because I thought the lyrics were cheezy. They often make me smile and dance though. Thank you for making them less of a guilty pleasure, internet people. The new songs are pretty cool, especially John the Revelator. They won't replace my old favorites, but I'll sure be getting the new album when I feel secure in my finances.

It's no Violator, but it's not too shabby. The new single is actually one of their best, I think. The rest of the album is sort of hit-or-miss.

I'm going to be seeing Depeche Mode next month in San Diego.  I hope they play a bunch of their old stuff.

I plan on getting the album soon. Precious was used in Smallville season premier, and I have to say it was pretty awesome.

I've got tickets to see them in Montreal-- the trip up is kind of my early Christmas present.  It may or may not make up for me missing them back in the 80's, when they were good in their prime, but I'm really excited nonetheless.  I may not be oldschool enough to have really been aware of them way back when, but then again, I was growing up in Maine in the 80's.  I was lucky to be aware of anything other than Aerosmith and Bon Jovi.

I'm just hoping for a smattering of stuff from the early albums-- as long as I get to hear "Strangelove" and "Enjoy the Silence," I'll go home happy.  If I get to hear "Halo," "Shake the Disease," and/or "Behind the Wheel," I'll go home overjoyed.

Am I the only one who thought "Precious" was just a weak attempt to rehash "Enjoy the Silence?" Every time the track starts I get confused.

But some of the rest was pretty good. "John the Revelator" is nice and dark.

And was anyone else weirded out by the complete discography in the back of the booklet? It made them seem kinda desperate to sell the rest of their records.

The discography whoring is probably more the fault of their label rather than the band itself. Depeche Mode is probably Mute/Sire/Reprise's biggest band and they like to exploit that.

Just looking at the complete re-release of their entire set of singles in a set of 6 box sets speaks to that end ;)

DM has alot of hardcore fans and they'll buy just about anything.....

As for Precious being a weak EtS rehash, I don't really agree. At worst I would call it a spiritual successor. They do share a similar feel, and basic musical composition (electronic melody coupled with a physical instrumental hook), but that's pretty much where the similarities end. They're both awesome songs though ;)

I can definately hear Dave's personal influence on this album. Anyone who picked up his solo effort, Paper Monsters, should know what I'm talking about. It's awesome to hear a DM take on Dave's songs. He wrote Suffer Well, I Want It All, and Nothing's Impossible

After giving it a few dozen listens through, I'm very pleased with the album.

Songs I'm hoping to hear in Montreal:
- John the Revelator (They HAVE to do this one)
- Useless
- Never Let Me Down Again
- Strangelove
- Behind the Wheel
- Question of Time
- Pimpf (Wishful thinking)
- Enjoy the Silence

I wish I could have seen them back in the 80s or early 90s... not because they were better back then, but because I would have had a chance to hear the more obscure stuff that will never be played live ever again (ie - non singles).

You're right in that they're one of their label's biggest bands. Depeche Mode moves shitloads of units.

Their new stuff isn't bad. It's not great, but it's far from bad. If I had to pick an eighties vaguely-depressing-revived-band to listen to, though, I think I'd go with Echo and the Bunnymen.
