Title: those movies you hate yourself for loving
Post by: Schmendrick on 24 Oct 2005, 13:19
This is the thread for all those movies you're too ashamed to admit you love! Just tell us what the movie is and why you love it! We can hang our heads in shame together.

I adore 'That Thing You Do' I watch it whenever it's on TV. It's such a feel good movie and I really like the song ... Also Tom Hanks is my old man crush... *sigh*

'Titanic' I know it's pathetic, but I do cry while watching it. I used to watch it every weekend with my friend, but I've cut it down.

For some reason, I have a soft spot for Michael J. Fox films from the 80's, especially Teen Wolf and Secret of my Success.

Save the Last Dance.

(this is coming from someone whose favorite director is Peter Greenaway, for fuck's sake. I have no excuse. :))

Speaking of '80s movies, anything with a Corey in it works for me.  If it has both of 'em, all the better!  (Or worse, depending on your point of view.)

Defcon 4.  Such an awful movie, but soo amazingly entertaining.  I mean, when a preppie commands a survivalist army and takes over Nova Scotia, only to be defied by a hygenically challenged farmer with a war-wagon backhoe and the crew of a nuclear attack satellite, how can you go wrong?

Sometimes I think I am the only person alive who thought the Matrix: Reloaded was actually pretty cool. I was drunk when I saw it though, so I wasn't really paying much attention to the wanky philosophy of it.

I have a few movies that I'm ashamed to have enjoyed (and continued enjoying).

The Rundown
Baseketball
Anchorman
Title: those movies you hate yourself for loving
Post by: Daniel on 25 Oct 2005, 06:59
I really enjoyed the Rundown - much more than I thought I would.

Anchorman didn't really work for me so much, but I've only seen it the once and I went if with very high expectations.

I like all three Matrix movies. The first is the best by far, of course, but the second two have their good points - cool fight scenes, Agent Smith being badass, and Monica Belluci.

Other movies I like but probably shouldn't: I really like the most recent version of Peter Pan, as well as the Powerpuff Girls Movie, and The Princess Bride.

Heh...I'm not ashamed of necessarily liking any of the movies or shows that I like.  There are a few, though, that I'm ashamed to admit I've watched:

Bring It On- I was bored one afternoon and it was on.  I still feel that this is a step or two above "You Got Served."

I'd love to be able to say I've never watched a single episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (I'd really, really love to be able to say that) but sadly, this isn't the case.  I've seen two episodes of this godawful series in full, one of which was this terrible musical episode, and both of which were forced upon me by a drunken friend one Thanksgiving.

Oh wait.  I guess there actually is one I'm embarrased I used to like:

I'm embarrassed I ever thought Reality Bites was interesting.  Funny how your perspective on those things changes with distance.

I love the Breakfast Club and other brat pack movies, and I'm not really ashamed of it.

I am a bit ashamed to say that I both saw and enjoyed "Bring it On" in the theater when it came out.  Twice.
Title: those movies you hate yourself for loving
Post by: Daniel on 25 Oct 2005, 18:43
I, too, have an irrational love for Bring It On. The one thing that's restrained me from buying it is that I've never seen it for a less-than-high price. I will never, ever, watch the sequel, though.

I do so love Buffy, and I love the musical episode - but it's really not the best place to start with the series. It only really works if you know the characters. Plus by Season 6, then show was going downhill. If you watched, say, season 2, you'd understand why so many people love the show.

...I should watch the Princess Bride again, soon - it is a delight of a film.

Oh, crap, just remembered.

Picnic at Hanging Rock, not really that I'm embarassed by it, it's just such an odd movie that I had to mention it.

Another one would be Big Trouble in Little China.

I've never seen a Hillary Duff movie - none of them have really appealled to me. I do, however, love Lizzie McGuire (I have the first two seasons on DVD). I really should be ashamed of that, I think.

Big Trouble Little China is definitely a movie I love.

Reckless Kelly, saw this on HBO once.  I think it's a Yahoo Serious movie.

The Parent Trap - Lindsay Lohan's first movie.  I saw it when i was younger and enjoyed the hell out of it.

10 Things I Hate About You is easily one of my favourite movies.  I don't really feel guilty about that one.

I kinda like "O" and "Save the Last Dance."  I used to have a thing for Julia Stiles.

This one is really bad.  Star Trek V.  The one with Sybok.  It's terrible, but I enjoy it.

Secret of my Success.

All I remember from that is the scene where everyone in the house is running around the halls, doing one of those scenes where everyone misses the other by a minute by going into this door and that door. And the "Ooh Yeah" song (you know, the one that was playing during the final credits of Ferris) was playing.

Also, my own choice has to be House Party. I can't explain it. I shouldn't like this movie. I'm a huge Hitchcock fan. I usually go for standard quality flicks, but House Party was kicking.

Two I'd forgotten:
Scanners. All the Scanners movies, except I haven't seen Scanner Cop I or II yet.

And, um, I love Crocodile II. LOVE it. Watch it every time it's on TV, and have made most of my friends watch it. It's completely horrible, but it's got multicultural criminals, giant crocodiles, alcoholic guides, and proof that love transcends all, damnit. Even central american marshland filled with the aformentioned criminals and crocodiles.

That's... disturbing. He is funny, though. As are so many characters on that show - Gordo, Matt, Lanny, Ethan, Lizzie's parents - it's so delightful. The only boring characters, really, are Lizzie and Miranda. Apart from them, it's all gold.

I remember we watched it in music class in high school. It was kinda creepy, but I dont remember any actual payoff. That was probably because I fell asleep rather early.

Also, in the Princess Bride, the swordfight with Inigo Montoya at the top of the cliff with all the rocks everywhere is pretty much some of the best swashbuckling I have ever seen done on screen, although, whenever I think of the word "Swashbuckling" I think "Fruity sword-fighting in a style that noone in their right mind would actually use if they were fighting for their life

heh - good point, although if I could swashbuckle,  I would, at every opportunity. I watch The Mark of Zorro (1940s-style) on the weekend - that had some pretty sweet swashbuckling in it, as well. I'm certainly looking forward to Legend Of Zorro.

Oh Mnem... i don't even think that the boyish sexyness of Julia Stiles could make up for the poor excuse of a movie that was O. I mean the scene where he holds the ring up and spins is just terrible. Although when Josh Hartnet says "I would give my LEFT NUT! to be in your shoes". As I was watching the movie, i wanted him to get away with it really, i spose i sympathised with this..."iago" more than the traditional one.

My dirty little secret?

Would that Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon?

I thought about giving that as a white elephant gift along with The Hebrew Hammer, but instead I ended up with the He-Man/She-Ra Christmas Special.

Why do you hate yourself for loving that brilliant, near-transcendental bit of cinema?  I can't find my copy and it makes me cry whenever I think of all the soviet-slashing badassness I'm missing out on.

You have nothing to be embarassed about!  Aliens, zombies, and GUITAR WOLF!  Hell, my pick involved Jonathan Silverman, Andrew McCarthy, and a walking dead guy.

Ah, who else but Guitar Wolf would remind us that love has no borders, nationalities, or genders?

Rock and Roll isn't dead.  Rock and Roll never dies.

10 Things I Hate About You, Coyote Ugly, Bring It On...bad stuff, I know...Lindsey Lohan movies...yeah...Arnie movies...Charlie's Angels...

Quote from: Daniel
True Lies and Terminator are Arnie's best. That is all.

Yes...and Twins...

Quote from: Kthak
The Princess Diaries.

It's the line. THE LINE. "Because you saw me when I was invisible." I watch that film for that line. Me=loser.

Muppet Treasure Island

It's the songs, all about the songs...

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion

Listed as my favourite movie on my deviantART profile.

Quote from: Daniel
If you watched, say, season 2, you'd understand why so many people love the show.

Season 3. Season 3. Is the best. Then goes terribly downhill. Riley? Dawn? Ew. At that point it's best to switch to watching Angel, imho.

Princess Bride? Predator?! Life of Brian!?! Some of these movies are GREAT movies -- no two ways about it! Even The Breakfast Club is cheesy and dated, but undeniably GOOD. What do you people hate yourself for loving these? Crazy talk! CRAZY TALK, I say!

MY favorite shitty movie is Cocktail. An inarguably bad movie -- but with many very small, great moments.

The alchohol throwing, the great shitty lines ("beer... is for breakfast"), Elizabeth Shue AND Gina Gershon...

It made me want to be a bartender. So I became one (for a couple of years). We didn't juggle bottles, though.

White Oleander and The Virgin Suicides.  I wont tell anyone I like them but I definately downloaded them and have them secretly stashed away in my harddrive where I keep all my porn.
