What does everyone here play, if anything? Any horror stories to tell about bad ones/problems?
I'll refrain from my own plugging until some other people post it up.
-
I refuse to play pay-per-month MMOs. I will not buy your software for 50 dollars and then pay another 15 every month just to keep playing it. You can charge me one, or the other. Not both.
That being said, I have played World of Warcraft at my friend's house a few times, and it's highly addictive.
-
I see no problem with it. It's not dissimilar to any other form of entertainment. Besides, if the game is worth it, why not pay it? When I played Final Fantasy XI, I paid $14 a month for it and a second character slot for my fiance.
It was worth it. When it was no longer worth it, I stopped paying.
Also, I play two MMO's right now, both are free, and both beat out stuff like WoW and FFXI for my time. I've been playing one for over 3 years.
-
I played WoW for a bit on a friends private pirate server of bugginess +7 for a bit. That put me off pirating it but I'd still like to try it properly.
-
I play Guild Wars.
-
WoW all the way
-
I don't have a job, nor any freedom with money, so I stick to the free or beta test games. I used to be into MapleStory and Roseonline but they became lame.
-
NOOGA NOOGA WOW!
-
I played Guild Wars for about a month. That's $54.something that I'll never get back.
I also played urbandead for a week before dying in entirely unpredictable ways and becoming a zombie. Pity, great concept.
-
Played FFXI from PC launch until this past August.
Played WoW during beta and quit about two months before it went live.
Common demoninator: Asshats
-
i play guild wars as well.. i have spent 54 dollars into it. and will continue to play untill my brain rots out of my skull.. especially since a friend gave me his account after deciding it didnt work on his compter and that he didnt want any money.. now i want to see one of your other mmorpg's give you 8 characters for 54 dollars flat
-
level cap 20 = ftl.
I play WoW currently, but I've played Dark Age of Camelot, Horizons and City of Heroes.
-
I played Guild Wars for a bit and the free one called Knight Online... but that's it.
-
I will be buying guild wars tonight and have been playing Runescape but it was a bit terrible...
-
I paid £5 fora copy of EVE online
I now (theoretically - I'm still in the 30 day trial period right now) pay £38.85 quarterly to continue playing it.
Even after a mere 24 hours, I can already tell that it WILL be money well spent.

just out of curiosity, what are they?
also, i am a FFXI whore.
-

-
Hopefully I'll get City of Villains in a couple of weeks. I don't mind shelling out the monthly fees, but its better when you get people to buy you the game and time cards for your birthday ^_^
-
also these tempt me
http://ironrealms.com/
I looked, they're text based and terrible...
-
I've played WoW, Everquest [oh god, such a mistake], MapleStory, Rose, Flyff, etc. None of them are that great for a long run thing, you kind of get bored after a few weeks.
-
Try some free mmo games like Knight Online or Guild Wars. Even Neverwinter Nights might count as a mini mmorpg.
NWN 2 is coming out soon and that should also have some free online play.
-
I used to play Ragnarok Online a lot... well, not quite a lot. Got to lvl 60 or something and then got bored.
I think it's funnier with a party.
:p
-
I play Runescape, when I have more time and money I'll probably buy Guild Wars... peer pressure and all that...
-
I play me some Guild Wars. Used to play it a lot more often, but then I had time. And now I do not! Hurr.

For the $20 / month (US) you also get expansions included in the price. Very cool. The new one adds a bunch of content. I just started about 6 days ago and I'm addicted. :(

I was pretty close to buying Guild Wars but chose MxO over it. Then I gave up MxO after about 2 months. Is it a good game?
-
GW is all sorts of good stuff, oh yeah.
-
Kingdom of Loathing!

Kingdom of Loathing!
Got any extra meat I could borrow?
-
Someone needs to play me in Battlefield 2 immediately.
-
Sadly I can only play GW right now. Or mebbe CSS. If I had the time.

I'm royally pissed off at valve. I bought, and I mean bought, Counter Strike:Condition Zero for no other reason than to get access to CS:Source and then once HL2 comes out CS:Source dissapears off my f'ing harddrive and now they want me to buy HL2 to play Source. I'm not falling for that twice.
-
Well, CSS is based on the HL2 "engine", though they should be separate products. But they're not. :)
You'll want to do this:
-
But it doesn't make sense, since I've played CSS on my computer before. When I first bought CZ. I can go and rebuy CSS for $20 or get it with HL2.
I'm wondering if I should do that or buy DODS

Kingdom of Loathing!
Hells yes! What's your username? I'm fanatix (#13114). It's good to see that there are other QC readin' Adventurers out there!
-
Nihilist, what's your GW name? I'm either on Lol Emo Goth or Chaea Flames.
-
I think my primary character is Nihilist the Mad. I'm playing with another one these days, but I cannot even remember her bizarre name.
-
FFXI =o)
Did/do have Guild Wars, but i found it lacking. o may play it again in the future, it's always there.
want to try WoW eventually but I've pretty fully up with FFXI atm.
-
EVE (http://myeve.eve-online.com/download/videos/) you guys!
Trust me, download the large version of "EVE Never Fades". I know it's not small, but DAMN it's worth it. HELLA cool video.

Hey folks I'm a long time reader new poster though and thought I"d weigh in on this thread.
I've been playing MMO's for a long while now. They're often more than worth the monthly fee. It depends on thier policy for releasing new content. Sony's standard method sux, aka pay an extra 20.00 for every stupid expansion.
I've been playing City of Heroes since March 2004 (When it was in Early Beta). Its provided me countless hours of fun and a great community.
I've played other games in the past, Everquest (lasted two days), Star Wars Galaxies (lasted thirty minutes), Ultima Online (lasted two days), Earth and Beyond (played for eight months), Guild Wars (lasted a week), World of WarCraft (lasted two weeks), Jumpgate (lasted two months).
My experience with these games is to get in the beta and try it or find a friend who plays and see if they'll let you try it out a bit, or find a free trial. Buying an MMO without trying it can often lead to a huge waste of time and money.
For those of you looking for a great new game.. I'm currently in Auto Assault's (http://www.autoassualt.com)Beta and talk about fun... Cars, Guns, destructable environment, great beta community, and the Dev Staff has had so much interaction with the player base its amazing.
Its a long way out from release so there's a good chance of getting into the beta yet for those who are interested.
-
My girlfriend has banned me from online rpg's for two reasons
1) I will get hugely immeresed and she will never ever see me again
2) I will meet someone more interesting than her and she will never ever see me again.
Kinda harsh, really....
-
LOL Well, that is a chance... especially with City of Heroes. A LOT Of women play that game.
When I first started my radio station I was expecting to have one or two female listeners... as it turns out I have about 75% of my listeners are female and not just guys playing girl characters.
Good news geeks! The Girl Gamer population has skyrocketed!
-
I play Guild Wars, albeit only out of appreciation for the fact that I don't have to play monthly (mainly because I can't). Also, because of it, it's easier to keep from getting addicted- I'm not wasting money by not playing the game for a day, or even a week. All the level 20 cap does is force the player to rely more on strategy towards the end of the game- certainly not something I'm opposed to! Lvl 25 or 30 would be nice, though...
I also beta test a lot. RFOnline is shaping up to be pretty awesome- giant mech MMO. Keep an eye out for that one, ladies and gents.
-
I've played EQ, DAoC, AO, CoH, SWG, and WoW.
EQ I played the longest and enjoyed (past tense) the most. Probably more from the people I played with more than anything. We were able to do things 'back in the day' that few others could with our numbers. We used strategies that noone else did because they would just zerg encounters.
WoW is alot of fun but its flashiness wore off on me faster than I thought it would. I loved it when I was playing and then one day I just didn't have that itch to play anymore.
Right now I'm in a PnP mood so I'm not playing any online games. Saves me money too.
-
I play EQ2. there's one guy in our guild thats a dick when you try to quit the guild after you've been in for a couple of months, (the guild leader no less) Other than him, i have a blast. I dont' mind the fee becasue i manage to sell platinum and items each month to offest the balance. (and before you moan, Sony ALLOWS it on 2 servers.)
-
I played EQ2 for a bit, but it wasn't really my thing.
I played Guild Wars quite a bit, but I got bored.
-
I'm just so sick and tired of Fantasy games... which is why games like City of Heroes and Auto Assault have really grabbed my attention.
While I admit CoH is a game that I'm not overly happy with the changes too its still damn good for new players.
-
I used to play Guild Wars for... a few months, I 3 or 4, I think before I got tired of it... Especially the player base. Now, I mostly play on a NeverWinter Nights PW called SoulForge... Graphics aren't as pretty as GW, granted, but the playerbase is much better, and I enjoy a bit of RPing now and then.
-
I have considered reinstalling GW lately, because I really enjoyed my time playing it, and I liked the class/levelling system, but because I didn't have to consistantly play and level up, to stay competitive in PvP, I would leave it for weeks at a time eventually, when I had other games, and when I reformatted my computer, I just never bothered reinstalling it.
What are the new areas like? Anything fun happening? Have they fucked around with mesmers much? <3 Mesmer class so much.
-
Mesmers were indeed quite awesome...
I think that the trouble in GW was that, for a non-PvPer like me, there just wasn't anything to do once you hit level twenty... I mean, sure, you could run around and get the Elite Skills and all, but that just wasn't all that fun. Really, you'd have to turn to PvP, which, while fun, just wasn't for me.
-
I guess that was kind of the point. I mean, they did go out of the way to make PvP fairly accessible, although without a decent guild, you'd probably get bored as hell after a while, because GvG was pretty much the most awesome fun ever.
-
I also played urbandead for a week before dying in entirely unpredictable ways and becoming a zombie. Pity, great concept.
Urbandead is great. Massively lo-tech, but I guess thats part of the appeal. I haven't been playing long, but I'm enjoying it.
A lot of my characters have become zombiefied, but I've managed to get a firefighter up to level 5, and hes still gaining XP pretty easily.
-
This is a new one I was only recently introduced to (as in, earlier today recently)
It's called "Space Cowboy". it's Korean. Totally free - free software, no subscription fees.
Surprisingly addictive, given how simple it is.
downsides - overly simple and potentially repetitive. Apparently gets better when you join a player guild. Poor english translation.
http://www.spacecowboy.net/
it's probably not one to stick to like EVE or WoW, but it's certainly good for a quick shot of fun - especially if you've been playing a lot of EVE and want a slightly more active experience.
-
i play EQOA for ps2 but thats only because i dont have (and cant afford) a decent computer. i thought about buying FFXI and playing it at work when no one is around but the cost/play time ratio wouldnt be worth it.
-
Puzzle Pirates and Kingdom of Loathing...although mostly the Pirates...
-
World of Warcraft. Got a level 60 undead warlock on Silver Hand, which was one of the first realms that I never, ever play anymore because it's incredibly overpopulated and next to impossible to get in a raid group. I love my guild on that server, and my screenname is my warlock's name, but there' just no love for me on that server.
So now I play my level 27 undead Warrior named Kaeyle on Nath'rezim, which is a PvP server. Loving it. Keeping my smithing skills on par with my actual level is quite a trick, too, but I am doing it without too much fuss.
Fuck the Alliance. Horde for the win.
-
I play Guildwars and City Of Villains. I like playing the low-level GW stuff, and I think the initial training section of the game is the most satisfying.. no pressure really, most of the fights you get into are the ones you picked and you can get places solo if you don't want the hassle of keeping the bots or other people on task.
CoV, while it can sometimes be a bit repetitive, does offer some very interresting realms to explore, provided you don't allow yourself to get stuck in a rut.
Oh, and Progress Quest (http://www.progressquest.com/)... Lots and Lots of Progress Quest.

I play Ragnarok Online on www.xaosro.org. Its a free server(Hacks!) that is normally 3/3/3 rates, so basically, xp and item drops are 3x normal servers. Right now shes going through a bit of an overhaul so there is a temp server in place.
-
I played WoW for quite a while ( Lvl 60 Warrior, MC - Maintank ), then i realized that id rather get some reallife, you`ve got to play 6-8 hours on at least 3 days a week if you want to stay close to the top.
-
I've played the international Ragnarok Online Chaos server since, er, my freshman or sophomore year of high school... so up to four years now? Ouch :[
