What do you beleive is the greatest song(s) of all time?
I personally have narrowed it down to a battle between:
Bob Dylan - It's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
*or*
Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift
*or*
Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay
-
fuck!...i'm dead - army of hermaphrodites
-
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Dream Theater - Under A Glass Moon
The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For the Devil
Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-10)
Symphony X - The Turning
Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
And fuck all the haters, Stairway to Heaven. I don't care if it's cliche.
-
The Beatles - Lady Madonna
I will never get tired of listening to this song. Ever.
-
Dntel - (This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Static
The Internationale
Mobb Deep - Shook Ones Pt. II
Orbital - The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
Mclusky - Fuck This Band
Duke Ellington - Black and Tan Fantasy
Thelonious Monk - Straight No Chaser
Miles Davis - So What
Cannibal Ox - A B-Boys Alpha
EDIT: And, in retrospect...(Tough Call here)
Photek - The Third Sequence -or- Modus Operandi
-
Counting Crows - Round Here
with honourable mentions to..
Pixies - This Monkey's Gone To Heaven
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
Joy Division - Atmosphere
The Cure - The Love Cats
best of the 1 hit wonders
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's.
-
I do not know how to delete my accidental double post so here's this.
-
Bruce Springsteen - Rosalita
The Wild the Innocent and the E street shuffle deserves so much more recognition than it gets.
-
The Cure - Plainsong
Kings of Convenience - I'd Rather Dance With You
Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart Again
Manu Chao - Minha Galera
King Sunna Ade - Ja Funmi
Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead
Simon and Garfunkel - America
To La Creme:
Fuckin' A, Bob Dylan - It's a Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
-
Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Joy Division - She's Lost Control
Stooges - I Wanna be your Dog
Velvet Underground - Venus in Furs
And too recent to be certain it isn't just the mood of the moment:
The Vacation - Destitute Prostitutes
-
I saw Joan Baez covering Dylan's Hard Rain.... It was quite good!
Damn, class change!
GY!BE= motherfucker=redeemer
-
Johann Sebastian Bach - Brandenburg Concerto Number Three
-
WORST.
THREAD.
EVER.
-
^
Yup, I'd have said it in a less 'asshole' way though.
-
And I'd have said
Ancient Rites - (Ode to Ancient) Europa (Live)
The Count Nosferatu Kommando - Jim Beamed Ahnenherbe TV
Skyclad - Polkageist!
Sol Invictus - Kneel to the Cross
Anti-Nowhere League - So What?
Mercyful Fate - Evil
Ewigkeit - Strange Volk
Acid Bath - Venus Blue
Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond
3 Inches of Blood - Deadly Sinners
Finntroll - Slaget Vid Blodsalv
Current 93 - A Song For Douglas After He's Dead
Inkubus Sukkubus - Wytches
Carpathian Forest - He's Turning Blue
Straight out fucking tie.
-
A tie between "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson and "Blue Monday" by New Order.
-
^
Yup, I'd have said it in a less 'asshole' way though.
Well it was either that or go into my spiel about how 'best' is ridiculously subjective, no-one will ever agree, a million arguments will start, no-one will post one track (not even the thread starter for God's sake), hardly any-one's lists will overlap..
Basically, a serious case of:

Hey guys, I got an idea. If you don't like it don't post here.
Not trying to be a dick, but how does posting here when you think it sucks any better?
-
Well it was either that or go into my spiel about how 'best' is ridiculously subjective, no-one will ever agree, a million arguments will start, no-one will post one track (not even the thread starter for God's sake), hardly any-one's lists will overlap..
So . . . let me get this straight . . . if people don't agree about the best song ever, then the thread is worthless because tastes are subjective? Also if people have different favorites, then fighting is inevitable?
That's funny, DynamiteKid, because prior to your posts all I saw were interesting, thoughtful responses; mutually respectful despite being quite different. And I was looking forward to listening to a whole bunch of new music, just because someone on the board said it was their favorite. Maybe it wouldn't be my favorite -- but at least I would get the opportunity to listen to songs that I might have missed otherwise -- and that I might like!
Guess you're wrong huh? And that's not opinion -- that's fact. I've got empirical evidence. Now go away. Maybe you should go to the wrong thread. You know, the one for people that are wrong? Say . . .I bet it would be a big hit if you reposted that graphic, but instead of "fishing for replies", you changed it to "fishing for wrong".
On topic: Far and away the second Queen of the Night aria in the Magic Flute. My favorite rendition is by Cristina Deutekom. Pure magic.
-
and the arguments and the glaben!
i don't think i have a best song ever. the most played song on my itunes is aphex twin's iz-us, but that isn't the best song ever. nice, though.
question: does a song have to be kinda old to be considered for "best song ever" credentials?
-
I'm partial to a lot of Handel selections personally.
-
@whoever mentioned "The Cure - The Love Cats". That was a serious contender. Thanks for saying it.
@people who think this is the worst thread ever: What the fuck? Seriously, Kid Modernist is right. If you're just going to be a douche, then don't even bother posting. It is basically immature and annoying.
@pretty much everyone else: Long lists, huh?
-
I meant to say Haydn. Hayden? Damn his name and the similarly-named Canadian slowcore artist.
-
@pretty much everyone else: Long lists, huh?
Music is simply too awesome to pick favourites. If I had to say one though, the best song ever is clearly 'So What?' by the Anti-Nowhere League. When you're drunk anyway.
"I've 'ad scag,
and I've 'ad speed,
and I've jacked off until I BLEED!"
-

is it ironic if the first person to post something "argumentative" in this thread is someone who dislikes the concept of the thread because it'll start arguments?

Did they do the original then, I always loved the Metallica version on Garage Inc.
-
yup, it's they're biggest hit, though 'I Hate People' is a fucking good runner up
'I 'ate people...and people 'ate me!"
-
3 Inches of Blood - Deadly Sinners
Let's live a long and happy life together in a house by the sea.
-
Without any doubt in my mind, I'm gonna say this:
"Sympathy for the Devil" by The Rolling Stones
soooooo awsome....
-
In my experience, Mother of Pearl by Roxy Music might be the best song ever. But there are a few others that might also be. Such as:
Marquee Moon by Television,
Ocean Rain by Echo & the Bunnymen,
Up Jumped the Devil by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds,
and more I can't currently think of.
-
Hell's of Wilco, I AM Trying To Break Your Heart.
-
I say Wilco: "Poor Places".
-
Iron Maiden - .... lots of iron maiden!!!
Opeth - The Drapery Falls
Children of Bodom - Needled 24/7
In Flames - Moonshield
Iced Earth - Melancholy
Dream Theater - probably ACOS, or when Dream and Day Unite
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Pagans Mind - Enigmatic Mission
Tarot - Pyre of Gods or Do You Wanna Live Forever?
And I am sorry for being a prick, but for those that said 3 Inches of Blood, ESPECIALLY Deadly Sinners - for shame. Rob Halford would be turning over in his grave if he was dead, those vocals are shocking. Now Im also not some leetest metalhead, but when an alleged traditional metal band wears bloody emo clothing in promotional pictures... I just don't know.... and there wasn't even a solo in that song!! hahaha. Anyway, gotta love some of the corny euro power metal as well! Rhapsody! WOOO! haha.
-
neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea
-
I want Sam's list to have sex with me. I want it so bad.
-
John Cage, 4'33".

You almost had me on your side until that ridiculous third paragraph.

No.
It isn't.
No.

Passing Afternoon,Jezebel,My Lady's House,Jesus The Mexican Boy,Woman King-Iron and Wine
Bright Eyes-Art Garfunkel
Defying Gravity-from the musical Wicked
Mad World-Gary Jules
Eaten-Bloodbath
Many,many more.
-
Mad World-Gary Jules
I was about to say covers shouldn't count, but then I decided it really doesn't matter...lots of covers are better than the original.
-
John Cage, 4'33".
Yay you! I put that as my "What are you listening to?" and nobody got it. :(
-

Cam Pipes ain't Rob Halford, but then, no-one is Rob Halford. The promo pics are just some crappy marketing strategy from Roadrunner. When I saw them, Cam (who's actually the big hairy guy) was wearing spiky bracers and an all-father t-shirt, and the emo-est looking one (the one in glasses) not only took of his glasses, but was wearing a Bolt Thrower shirt and three quarter length black trousers that revealed scenes of a wrecked battlefield round one calf and a hanging scene round the other calf with ravens flying up his leg towards his knee. Metal. Plus, I think Deadly Sinners does have a short solo (I'll check when I get home). But with them killer fucking riffs, it don't really need one. I do aplogise to Rob though for not considering 'All Guns Blazing' by Judas Priest though.
Eaten-Bloodbath
Bloodbath are krieg as krap, but their best songs are clearly 'Outnumbering the Day' and 'Ominous Bloodvomit'.
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
No. No no no. Big God/Raped Souls? Yes. Pisschrist? Yes. Edgecrusher? Yes. T-1000? Maybe.
Children of Bodom - Needled 24/7
Most fans would think this heresy, but I do like this track? How much of the older stuff have you heard? I'd rank a lot above this, but especially tracks like 'Lake Bodom', 'Follow the Reaper', 'Hate Me!' and 'Black Widow'.
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Bomber, man! BOMBER! Does anyone actually listen to any Motorhead except this track!?
In Flames - Moonshield is actually a pretty nice choice, but I would probably have gone for Biosphere as classic IF. Pinball Map, Episode 666 and Clayman for middle and later period...I wouldn't go for that at all. Though the Commodore 64 version of Cloud Connected is 1337.
Also, I'm considering changing my vote entirely to Hawkwind - Master of the Universe. But only if you get the right version. It tails off towards the end on a lot of the longer versions, but that intro...pure hard rock genius.
-
Built to Spill - Out of Sight
I didn't even have to think about that one. However, I usually connect this song with "Kicked It in the Sun" and "Untrustable Pt. 2", both of which come right after it. If we were going to have a best song progression thread, that would get my vote. My vote times 303894593875.
-
For me, it's a toss up between "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division.
-
Mad World-Gary Jules
I was about to say covers shouldn't count, but then I decided it really doesn't matter...lots of covers are better than the original.
There you go. Mad World works SO much better as a creepy piano piece than a cheesey techno monstrosity.
I'm biased against 80's synth music. Screw Tears For Fears.
Here's a list...kinda:
Built to Spill - Out of Sight (good call, Postman)
Mock Orange - Stuck In
The Dismemberment Plan - Back and Forth
Joy Division - Disorder
Ben Folds Five - Underground
Fugazi - Target
-
The Refreshments - Nada

Free Ride- Edgar Winter Group

I hate Roadrunner Records

Just cos, you know, Peter Steele and King Diamond.
-
my favorite song is Pink Moon by mr. Nick Drake
excellent song, but if I was going to pick a favourite Nick Drake song it would be a toss-up among Man in a Shed, Black Eyed Dog, and Pink Moon.
-
Because that's a question I find impossible to answer, I'll just list a few that would at least be on my top 50.
The Beatles - I Will
Red House Painters - Have You Forgotten
Wilco - Pot Kettle Black
The Arcade Fire - Rebellion
-
I'm gonna have to say The Final Countdown, by Europe.
I love songs that are so bad they're good.
-
John Cage, 4'33".
I thought "Organ 2/ASLSP (http://www.john-cage.halberstadt.de/new/index.php?seite=dasprojekt&l=e)" was better, myself.

Originally I thought "I could never pick just one, there are hundreds or even thousands of songs out there and I couldn't imagine one really rising above the rest."
I was wrong, though; it's "Jungleland" by Bruce Springsteen.
-
The greatest song ever written by anyone ever is "Doraldina's Prophecies" by Masters of Reality.
-
Howard Hello - Give Up

Well, I don't think so. Digging for Fire is also very good.

FIGHT YOU

I could no way make this descion.
-
The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York
or
Jeff Buckey - Hallelujah
The first one is FUCKING AWESOME. Best song ever, I don't think so, but certainly the best Christmas song ever. Was very surreal at group practice last week when me and a mate played this through randomly. In a CHURCH.
As for Buckley - I dunno. It's a great song, but it's a cover, and I don't think he's done that much with it either.
-
I can't stand Leonard Cohens voice when he sings Hallelujah. But when Buckley sings it,especially on live recordings,it doesn't give you tingles inside. Everything just shuts down appart from your ears so you can fully appreciate it.
-
when Buckley sings it,especially on live recordings,it doesn't (?!!?!) give you tingles inside

If you continued to read then you would see that I was emphasising the impact his voice has, because it does more that give you tingles.

I believe the way to clarify that is to say "his voice doesn't just give you the shivers..."

Good grief. The first time someone mentions Counting Crows on here, and they list the worst song they've ever done. I mean, really. ;)
Round Here, A Long December, All My Friends, Rain King... These are the ones you should be mentioning. :)
-
I hate Roadrunner Records
As does every sane man and woman. Though I have to admit I will probably pick up, or at least download the new 'Roadrunner All-Stars' thingumy.
Just cos, you know, Peter Steele and King Diamond.
They put out a lot of rad shit in the early nineties. Life of Agony. Obituary. Suffocation. Other stuff.
I will pick one song and only one song. No one has heard it. It's been my favorite song for probably 5 years now.
Niblick Henbane - Life Over the Edge
-
Not to mention Type O Negative and Sepultura.
But they're a major label subsidiary now. I mean, fuck.
-
Picking my favorite song is nearly impossible
but my most played is "Duvet" by Boa
