I am somewhat into Musicals, seeing as I perform in an Orchestra that plays the scores to many. I have done Les Mis, Chicago, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, and many others. I'm curious what people's favorites are! If your favorite isn't on the poll then sorry. Do tell anyways!!
-
If musical movies count, then Moulin Rouge. Love it. And Grease'd be up there, too - I've loved that forever.
-
Oh dear god, I abstein from that poll - almost all of the options are steaming piles of vile Andrew Lloyd Webber bullshit!
Get back to me when you've got Singin' in the Rain or An American in Paris on there . . . hell, anything from the golden years of M.G.M.

:o you can't say that about THE MASTER OF THE MUSICAL FORM AS WE KNOW IT I love love love and adore the phantom of the opera and it was my dream as a kid to one day play the role of christine (too bad i have nowhere near the vocal range) plus seeing versions of les mis and jesus christ super star have had me entranced and in love with the musical form but i also have seen and loved musicals such as 42nd Street, Westside Story, Grease, Oklahoma! and god knows how many others (plus ia lways loves being in musicals in high school, i was the regular all singing all dancing drama queen)

THE MASTER OF THE MUSICAL FORM AS WE KNOW IT
As you know it, maybe - leave me out of this hellish society of yours!
-
OMG DONT MAKE ME PICK.
<--- Has seen WAY too many musicals.
-
One of my oldest/best friends is performing in the traveling version of Cats right now. I'm really excited, I get to see him perform in Dec. That said, I don't actually like Cats, but I like that my friend is doing what he loves and making money at it.
Also, I think my favorite musical might be Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
-
Oliver!
-
ROCKY HORROR IS NOT A MUISCAL! IT IS NOT A FILM! IT IS NOTHING BUT A STEAMING PILE OF TRIPE THAT IS INFLATED BY PEOPLE WHO CAN'T LET GO OF THE PAST INTO SOME BIZZARE FETISH THAT THEY PASS DOWN TO YOUNG CHILDREN WHO ARE DESPERATLY LOOKING FOR SOME WAY TO SEEM COOL, ALL THE WHILE CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEMISE OF AMERICAN THEATER AND FILM! FUCK THAT SHIT!
-
Avenue Q, Headwig & The Angry Inch, or Wicked.
What about Rent!
-
Seanbatemans rant was pretty damn funny even though i like Rocky Horror.
Rent movie comes out soon eh.
-
I agree with the earlier speaker about MGM's golden age. Now THOSE were musicals. Give me The Bandwagon any day — it just barely edges Singin' In the Rain and the dialogue was written by the same people. Or The Harvey Girls, which reunited Judy Garland with Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz). Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was a lot of fun, especially the dance number that turned into a brawl. Somebody else already mentioned An American in Paris, which showcased Gene Kelly's amazing footwork. On a much more somber note, there's Carousel. How can a poll of favorite musicals possibly be valid if it excludes anything and everything Rogers and Hammerstein ever did?

In other words, how DARE you?
Earlier this year, while babysitting someone else's kid, my then-girlfriend and I took him to see a high-school production of Carousel. Since he was only 5, we both expected him to get bored after a while. So we brought along crayons, a coloring book and other goodies to keep him occupied, telling him in advance that any time he wanted, he was allowed to do something else. But damned if that kid sat absolutely still, wide-eyed, for the whole three hours as this spectacle unfolded before him.
And yet when it was over, we couldn't get a word out of him.
"How did you like it?"
"It was OK."
"What was your favorite part?"
"Uh, I dunno."
-

Screw Rodgers and Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart is where it's at!
-
I like The Pirates of Penzance, Little Shop of Horrors and Into the Woods.
...Also, Gene Kelly has sexy magic shoes.
-
THERE ARE TOO FEW CHOICES HERE! I DEMAND MORE CHOICES! WHERE IS CANDIDE?
-
where is Little Shop of Horrors?
-
I haven't seen that one, are there flashbacks with half-bottomed girls scampering around all sad and not as hungry and singing?
-
Candide is this really trippy one where these lower class people meet God, and God is out of his skull. Ok so that's not a good synopsis, but this will serve you much better than I could: http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/candide_001.html
-
I'm partial to Phantom Of The Opera because I perform opera. No other reason. Other than that, Rocky Horror Picture Show is a beautiful beautiful thing.
-
There are only two Musicals worth viewing.
The Producers.
The Blues Brothers.
That is all.
-
The Blues Brothers is awesome, seen it three times and West Side Story aint too bad either.
(Some folks might read another thread about the Rock Horror Show and say "but I thought you said you didnt like musicals" I dont generally but Blues Brothers is an exception.
-
I have only seen one musical I somewhat enjoyed, namely Rock Horror Picture Show and even that was pretty bad. Does any musical have a decent story going for it? Because everything I have seen is virtually plotless. I have only seen one musical on stage, Annie Get Your Gun and it was horrendous, who knows how I survived.
I might see The Wizard of Oz if it gets shown again, seems quaint ;)
-
In terms of recent movie musicals, Moulin Rouge is pretty awesome.
*sneak*
Does De-Lovely count?
-
Where the hell is the option for Guys & Dolls?
"Luck, be a lady tonight... Luck, be a lady tonight... Luck, if you've ever been a lady to begin with, luck, be a lady tonight!"
-
Where is The Music Man? Where is Reefer Madness? Where is the fucking Wizard of Oz?!
YOU FAIL AT MUSICALS.
-
And what about Hedwig and the Angry Inch?
HMM?
-
I think we can all agree that the winner must be the recent musical interpretation of Debbie Does Dallas.
-
sweeney todd.
nothing compares, ever.
(ok, maybe hedwig compares, but seriously. sondheim at his most cynical and dark.)
-
I am such a musical geek! I love them all! My favorites are Wicked, Into the Woods and Cats.
Before people start hating on me (because apparently Cats was lame?) i know it isn't amazing as far as musicals go. But Cats was THE thing that first got me really into theatre, so it holds a special place in my heart :)
-
just to clarify if no one understands, but les miserables is a novel by a ninetineth century writer called victor hugo. just making sure people didn't take the musical as the real work...
-
Out of those there, I like Jesus Christ Superstar the most, but my current favorite is either Rent or Avenue Q.
-
Off of that list, I voted for Les Mis, even though it's not even in my top 5.
The actual top five:
1. Rent
2. Cabaret
3. Last 5 Years
4. Taboo
5. Assassins
Moving on...
I hate Rodgers and Hammerstein. Hate. Hate. Hate.
I hate Andrew Lloyd Webber JUST AS MUCH as I hate R&H.
Seriously, only one Sondheim musical on the list of choices? What's wrong with you people?
Candide is amazing.
Wicked is overrated but I love it anyways.
Debbie Does Dallas was amazing only because Sherie Rene Scott did it and I love her.
Favorite movie musicals: Singing in the Rain, My Fair Lady, Little Shop of Horrors, Moulin Rouge.
/giant musical geek.
*edited because apparently I have forgotten how to properly use commas*
-
Man oh man, how could I forget Avenue Q on my list of favorites? That musical is hilarious!
-
Heh, I forgot.
Happiness of the Katakuris.
*Grin* Hey, it's a musical! A Takashi Miike musical, but a musical!
-
Urinetown and Sweeney Todd. Yeah, fuck you.
-
Ok, ok, you have to guess:
"YOUUUU'VE GOT THE POWER AND THE GLOOOOOOOORYYYYYY!!! FOR EVEEEEARRRR AND EVEEEEER AND EVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!"
-
I really do like the music from Rent, but I've never seen it. My mom says she wants to take me, and I'm really excited to go. Since a bunch of other people here have probably seen Rent, any opinions about the upcoming movie?
-
im excited for it!! Its mostly people that were in the Broadway show, so i dont really see them messing it up too terribly. The trailers look good eh.
-
Out of all the musicals I've seen/been in:
- Chicago
- Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat (don't ask)
- Jesus Christ Superstar
- Oh Captain
- Moulin Rouge
- Phantom of the Opera[/list:u]I'd have to say that Chicago is my favorite so far. As you can see, though, I haven't really seen enough to be much of a judge. I'm going to be involved in a production of Titanic in January, though, so I'm really excited about that!
-
Why so little love for the Rocky Horror picture show!?
YOU ARE VIOLENTLY POKING MY WORLD. CEASE.
-
Candide is amazing.
They did a musical version of Candide? Holy crap I am giddy with glee. I need to see this, damnit.
-
Candide is actually an operetta, written by Leoanrd Bernstein. They recorded a version of it, starring Patti Lupone and Kristin Chenoweth, that plays on PBS sometimes. I think the dvd is available too. It's really amazing. There are a couple of videos here (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shows/candide/index.html).
Stifled Dreams, in my highly biased opinion, the Rent movie is going to be pretty damn awesome.
-
Fiddler on the Roof?
The Sound of Music?
Come on people these are important steps in musical history! ... and they're awesome...
-
Whoever mentioned Candide, you win. Ditto to Sweeny Todd. I love those.
Also, at my school there is a very strange infatuation with a musical, Wicked. an infatuation I do not share. I think it's tripe, personally.
-
Where is the G&S love?!
Oh sure, I could see someone neglect Patience. Maybe even H.M.S. Pinafore. But Mikado? And Pirates? These are the only musicals I listen to on CD. Because they are that good. I listen to them orphan.
-
i will not pick any of those musicals in the polll..as they are poo.
my faves are my fair lady, the sound of music, and chicago
i have been in my fair lady, annie and the wizard of oz...good times.
-
I've only been in Guys and Dolls, but my SIngin' in the Rain audition is nary but two days away.
-
I was in Oklahoma. To this day, it makes me want to bang my head against a wall. Sorry, Oklahoma fans. Just not my kinda thing.
Break a leg in your audition, ironoxide!
-
I thank you!
-
Guys and Dolls is pretty badass too, now that I think about it. Saw a version of it up in Northern Idaho, was awesome.
Also: I really fucking hate Grease.
-
Maybe i'll post some pictures in the picture thread come wednesday. If they're any good'uns. You see, we had a smoke machine that made it rediculously hard to focus cameras.
-
Also: I really fucking hate Grease.
That and Chex Mix made my day.
-
Current Favorite: Avenue Q
Alltime Favorite: Cabaret
-
Avenue Q is the shiznit.
-
1. Rent
2. Wicked
3. Chicago
-
What about The Who's Tommy, that was a pretty awesome musical, I'm suprised no one mentioned it.
-
That's because I'm the true pinball wizzard.
-
Avenue Q by far. You can't go wrong with puppets singing about homophobia and racism.
-
Gene Kelly will remain important in musical cinema for years. Give me Singin' in the Rain or An American in Paris any day.
-
man i'm with all the rentheads out there. i really want to see the movie but it's not out here yet, stupid living in isolated country. but i must say that west side story is by far and away the best apropriation of romeo & juliet that anyone is ever going to get, everything else is just too, trying not to be cheesy but failing miserably.
fun fact: elvis was originally offered the role of tony in the movie version but the colonel made him turn it down because...well because the colonel was a rather mean fat man who wasn't a colonel at all. oh at natalie wood can't sing to save her life, dubbed all the way!
-paula
p.s no one mentioned the wiz! i mean yes it was lame and yes the original movie version had diana ross and michael jackson but come on! ease on down the road is a fav of mine, as well as 'slide some oil to me' or something like that. nothing like a song full of sexual innuendo!
