Title: Local (to you) bands that rock.
Post by: Sideways on 03 Nov 2005, 09:32
In Calgary, a buddy introduced me to these guys (http://www.theagnostics.com).

The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir (http://www.theagnostics.com/images/studio.jpg), also known simply as "The Agnostics".

I don't know how easy it would be to find their CDs, but if you can, I recommend them!!

Review (http://www.cosmik.com/aa-november04/reviews/review_agnostic_mountain_gospel_choir.html) of their album:

I forgot you lived in Calgary! I was there just last week. Blast and damn etcetera.

The Agnostics are indeed sweet, they make a regular stop at the Folk Festival here in Regina.

Sylvie (http://sylviemusic.com/) is my local buzz band, and the only local really worth talking about; they're coming to Cowtown on the 25th so I suggest checking 'em out.

I checked out some of the sample songs on their site.  The Tom Waits comparison in that review is pretty apt.  I'd almost go so far as to call them "derivative."  But then if you're going to derive your sound from anyone, there are worse choices than Tom Waits.

It's definitely one of the better band names I've ever heard.  I'd certainly check them out if I ever found myself in Calgary.

Uh...my city doesn't believe in local music unless it's in the form of horrible high school pop-punk bands.  Or Cheap Trick cover bands.  Because Cheap Trick is from here.

Because I just moved I haven't really had the time to discover a lot of local acts.  However, I'll bring up two bands, one from my hometown and one here, that I think are definately worth a listen.

The first is La Cacahouette from Buffalo, NY, a sort of dream-pop, shoegaze trio that's really making a go for it in a city that just doesn't appreciate that kind of music.  check them out at http://www.myspace.com/lacacahouette.

The second is The Stereo Future, from here in Seattle.  They're pretty good, in that they don't sound like everything else around the city right now.  http://www.myspace.com/thestereofuture

There used to be a good band around here called Halo, but the drummer left, and they changed their name to the Vega Method, and went all prog-noise-core-crap. Shame, really, they were great live.

Those have all become horrible high school emo bands on the Isle of Wight. And a few even more horrible ska bands.

Decent bands from the isle of wight include:

Any band featuring the legendary Darren 'the Baron' or Lawrence 'Lucky Larry' Welling. With about fifteen other people, occasionally including me, they make up an axis of almost all that is good and proper in Island music: Syrafex (http://www.freewebs.com/syrafex/) & Overlord (doom metal), Pennies Dropped (http://www.myspace.com/pennysdropped) (Screamo. Not my thing, some here may like), The Barons (Rock), GoatFister (Grindcore), Fallen (melodic rock) and a host of others that form and reform.

Equity (http://www.myspace.com/equityband): Good friends of mine, good live as well. If they ever get big, I'm boasting on how I saw them play unplugged at an open mic night once.

and that's all I can be arsed to find. There's some other ok shit, Beggars Farm are a decent island band from years back: hard rock with a heavy nod to Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies: I have vinyl, but they ain't online and I'm not sure if they've ever gone out on CD except for one track on a Hawkwind covers compilation. There's also Four Man Riot, who play some good punk, but they're all atrocious stuck up cockmunches, so you can find any site they have yourself.

Also, I feel duty bound to mention the majestic Halo of Flies and the mighty Death Throes! Both releasing full-length albums sometime next year.

The Mercy Cage (http://www.mercycage.co.nr)
NZ's premier goth/electronica band at the moment. They have a huge range and are very varied. Look great with lasers. I highly recommend the tracks "Prozac, God and The Atomic Bomb", "Hymn 01" and "Magnets Coil"
The Bleeders (http://bleeders.orcon.net.nz/)
Punk band that's recently signed to Universal. Really cool even if they do have a beef with a friend's band. Heavilly influenced by hardcore. I recommend "So Lonely" and "A Bleeding Heart".
The Warpath (http://www.myspace.com/thewarpath)

nobody I know of. I had a band in high school and was very much involved in the local scene, but there weren't any bands I 'took with me', as it were. Dredg is from the next town over, but even them I haven't listened to in several years.

although I'm moving to Davis, CA next year, and DJ Shadow comes from there. :]

here in Tilburg (Netherlands) we have:
One in a million (http://www.oneinamillion.nl/ or http://www.myspace.com/oneinamillion) -- beatlesque music. On their cd they even covered eleanor rigby though when i saw them live they were playing a regular album track(in a bit of a powered up version) and ended with the riff of enter sandman which sounded very fluent.

2nd place driver (http://www.2ndplacedriver.com/) -- elektro, kinda nice, not really my thing though

Green Lizard (http://www.green-lizard.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/greenlizard) -- grunge. their 2002 (?) single mouthful (not on myspace) is really great, one of the best Dutch tracks ever in my opinion

And that's about it when it comes to interesting local bands here (well, we have this band called Krezip who are complete shit but managed to have a huge success in holland and I believe Belgium and Germany as well)

But I believe I'm the only Dutchie here so I guess i can just as well post all interesting unknown Dutch or Belgian acts huh?

Oh man, Atlanta has some great local stuff.  I really suck at describing stuff though, so bear with me.

Avenge Vegas (http://www.avengevegas.com) Just pretty much no frills female fronted rock.  I love these gals.
Linger (http://www.lingermusic.com)  Obviously Radiohead influenced, but heavier and noisier by far.
Homeroom (http://www.ilovehomeroom.net) A powerpop dorkrock 4 piece.  Lots of songs about high school heartbreak and stuff, but not emo in the slightest.
Second Shift (http://www.secondshiftmusic.com) They just kinda kick it old school.
Royal 7 (http://www.royal7.com)Another powerpop group, but I can't really place these guys though.  I just dig them.

A few bands that aren't bad? You do realise Propagandhi and Submission Hold are from Winnipeg, don't you? Hell, I once travelled all the way to Amsterdam just to see Submission Hold play, living in the same town as them would be like a dream come true. Well, maybe not since round here we have:

Humanfly - 'Led Zeppelin in a blender' was the best description I ever heard of them. http://www.calculated-risk.co.uk/
Red Stars Parade - Crushing stuff on Dry Run. http://www.myspace.com/redstarsparade
Bilge Pump - Kings of DIY rock. The NME once called them unlistenable guff, so you know they're good. http://www.gringorecords.com/
Polaris - Best band in the UK? http://www.gringorecords.com/
Tangaroa - Slow grind? Don't ask how, but it works. http://www.myspace.com/uglypeoplebreedfast
Stigma - Two-piece harsh business. http://www.traumatizedzine.com/stigma
The Dauntless Elite - One of the world's few remaining good melodic punk bands. Ex-Joe 90 and Fig 4.0 I do believe. http://thedauntlesselite.com/
Chickenhawk - Big fucking riffs and a man in mask being a wee bit worrying. http://www.chickenhawkdotcom.co.uk/
Executive Distraction Tasks - Start. Tech. Stop. http://www.executivedistractiontasks.co.uk
Birds of Prey - A big noisy mess. http://www.myspace.com/theendofmusic
Agent of The Morai - Sludge. No more need be said. http://www.myspace.com/theagentofthemorai
Like A Kind of Matador - Heavy prog kind of stuff. They're on Tumult, so that should give you a good idea of what they're about. http://www.myspace.com/lakom
Duck Stab - No frills fast hardcore. Ex Driven Down, Broken Access, We Are Corpses!!, The Devils, Charlie Don't Surf. Can't go too wrong really. http://www.myspace.com/duckstab
Jean Genet - Daft, sexy, danceable.
Antisocial Mixtape - Acoustic punk. If Rumbleseat had been a couple of kids from Pontefract, they might have sounded a bit like this. http://www.sixstringrevolution.tk/
Eiger - Just listen. http://www.thankyouforcavingmyheadin.com/
The Seven Inches - Catchy, silly indie pop songs.
Whores Whores Whores - A bit like The Locust maybe. Don't let the hideous name put you off. http://www.whoreswhoreswhores.tk/
Kill Manticore - Mudhoney, The Stooges, sci-fi and serious alcohol abuse. http://www.myspace.com/killmanticore
Cowtown - Math rock meets pop.
David Thomas Broughton - A guitar and a good voice.
Spasticated Razor Masturbator - Death grind smash chug fast tits. http://www.myspace.com/spasticatedrazormasturbator
D-Rail - How metalcore ought to be done. http://www.myspace.com/drail
Last Good Sleep - Rob of EDT's solo post-rock doom project.
Reth (well, about half of them live here anyway) - I like grind. This band grind well. http://www.myspace.com/reth

And that's by no means all the good ones, I haven't been to many indie gigs for a while so I'm sure there are more good bands in that style I haven't heard. Also, Lance Uppercut are supposed to be good and I liked the Mercaptan demo but haven't caught them live yet. And there are quite a few bands not quite going yet. Holy Crap! My Face! sound good when I hear them wailing away in my basement, the new band from the ashes of Pontefract/Leeds screamo kids We Are Corpses!! sound promising as do Dungeon Nun, Lucy from Kill Manticore and The Seven Inches probably formed six new bands this morning and I've got a couple up my own sleeve who I don't think will be too shabby at all.

I had the chance last month to see a former coworker of mine and his band play, all original songs, no covers, for a small charity concert. They call themselves All Weave Herd (http://www.myspace.com/allweaveherd) and they put on a damn good show for being such a short set.
Another band playing the same concert Death Valley Dragline (http://deathvalleydragline.com/news.htm) is equally worth seeing live.

Pack of Wolves: I do believe you've mentioned Duck Stab before, and I think I asked about their name and if it happens to be fro mthe phenominal Residents album. But anyways, are they good? Are they anything like the Residents? If not, do they still stab ducks?
Title: Local (to you) bands that rock.
Post by: a pack of wolves on 07 Nov 2005, 17:16
I'm afraid they're sod all like The Residents. They're just fast, stupid hardcore. But they are good, like any band who had a song about the sheer awesomeness of Leeds Six would be. As to the duck stabbing... Well, there isn't much I'd put past those boys except eating it afterwards.

Also, their singer snores like a bastard. This is irrelevant, except for the fact that he's passed out on the living room floor again and the noise is getting on my tits. And I just know he's going to wake up and break into Chapelle show quotes at some point.

I was slapping him earlier actually. We thought it might be a good idea to wake him up, but it had no effect. Thankfully, after briefly speaking in tongues he staggered out and I heard the clattering noise of him failing to negotiate the stairs down to the basement, and most likely passing out blissfully in front of his bedroom.

Australia - PATHOGEN!
(I'll add my own band when I record our stuff! haha)

I saw this band when COB came and toured last month and my god! The live show they put on was incredible, it was high energy and of high standard. Pulled off flawless guitar tandem techniques, vocals never faulted, and kept the crowd happy for an hour, even while we were waiting for COB!

In Australia, and I think a lot of you others Aussies will agree, that most of our bands are just crappy ripoffs of other scandinavian and american bands.  The pop and maintream-alternative rock bands are all the next-gen nirvana wannabes, while the metal is all screaming death/melodic death, and theres also a lot of bad emo/hardcore bands hitting the underground latey. I wont even go into hiphop... This Pathogen band are good because they dont just ripoff one band, they ripoff about 3 which is a welcome change. You can hear old In Flames, Opeth and Maiden in their work, but they pull it off well.

Wow, so much good local talent, I feel almost overwhelmed.

Here are a couple of bands I'm particularly proud of where I'm from:

Swayze (http://www.weareswayze.com/)

I know, I know, probably not the best band name in the world, while not actually sounding like The Decemberists, if you  The Decemberists, I'll guarantee you'll dig these guys.
When I listen to them it makes me feel like I’m wrapped up in a cozy blanket.

Dear and Glorious Physician (http://www.dearandglorious.com/)

This band is often described as Talking Heads playing Pixies.
They do quite the excellent job of breaking out of the chorus/verse that is the norm. And with lyrics like "There is no limitation to what can happen"  and finishing off a song with a rocking version of "When the saints go marching in", they give me lots of uplift in  what can be a dreary world.

Actually I just realized both these guys are on a local label,  Arkain Records (http://www.arkainrecords.com/), which puts out lots of music that is indie/experimental tinged.

Hey, you Missed Billy T.K. Junior. Really refreshing, laid back, for once not depressing rock, which is all too rare these days, and shows some optimism for once. And they put on a fantastic live show. They came to my school, which is among the most stupid and apathetic there is, and managed to get even the people here enthusiastic about the music.

Links?

Downloading Pathogen now. By the description I think I'll probably like them.
You folks should seriously check out The Mercy Cage though...
www.mercycage.co.nr
There's no website for him that I can find at all, closest thing would be http://www.amplifier.co.nz/artist/18363/billy_tk_junior.html?full=1 but it's not much help at all. He has no contact details or anything to be found anywhere, unfortunately.

I'm from Stirling so there isn't much here. In terms of signed talent, but I can actually see at the moment the scene growing. If you want to see the local bands in the area check out www.myspace.com/nottheemokids

Its a website for my radio show that I'm setting up. Click on it on a weeks time through as its barely started now.

My brother has linkes to a lot of loacl bands form his website but I'm going to ask his permission first to post his site here.

Champaign-Urbana has a great music scene.  It's like Chicago with less assholes...

but anyways, here's our cream of the crop:

The Beauty Shop - "From the wilds of Illinois this 3 piece have been compared with Nick Cave, Violent Femmes and The Handsome Family with a Leonard Cohen (“with a bad attitude”) vocal twist."
They're signed on a label in Scotland, and just left to go tour Europe again.
www.thebeautyshopband.com OR www.myspace.com/thebeautyshop

The Living Blue - "Barroom rock loves power pop if you just get them together in the same room -- the Shins know that. In the same way, "Fire, Blood, Water" is a surprisingly affective debut."
These guys just signed to Minty Fresh, and are on the way up.  They've had a couple of songs used on TV already, and it won't be long before they are in the national spotlight.
www.thelivingblue.com OR www.myspace.com/thelivingblue

Headlights - "Headlights are at the forefront of the resurgent scene happening in the twin cities of Champaign-Urbana. By exhibiting an uncanny ability to merge electronics with the barest of pop elements, Headlights carve a unique niche for themselves that falls nicely between My Bloody Valentine and The Postal Service."
Just saw these guys last night, and they were fantastic.  They just signed onto Polyvinyl, and just came home from a long tour.
www.headlightsmusic.com OR www.myspace.com/headlights

Lorenzo Goetz - "they express their knack for wiring together pop songs with indie rock. It's this type of serene attitude that they exude seeming to bleed it from every pore with an essential exuberance that is quite rare in the indie circuit."
Signed to Innocent Words, these guys just left home on a big tour all over the good ol' USA.  I believe they just played one of the final nights at CBGB's, and are currently somewhere in a van.  Fun pop stuff!
www.lorenzogoetz.com OR www.myspace.com/lorenzogoetz

Shipwreck - "Zack says, "The band’s sound is a patchwork of its members’ influences, from spectral indie to the dismay of country, culminating in what is perhaps a sonic drawl representative of the modern Wild West—a dry, cracked and disparate land, in the distance of which you can see high-piled city skylines perched among cacti and a glimmering reservoir." Zack talks pretty."
These guys put themselves in the genre of "subaquatic astropunk", which speaks loads in itself.  To me they sound something like if the Talking Heads covered Modest Mouse's "Dramamine".  Either way, it's good stuff!
www.shipwreckband.com OR www.myspace.com/shipwreck

These are the popular groups out here now, but we have about a million more bands in the area who play regularly.  It's a fun place to live.

Oh, and if you've read this far, might as well check out my band:

Johnnyork:  www.myspace.com/johnnyork
We play all sorts of rock stuff... something like garage-rock-powerpop-overdistorted 50's rock.  But that's just maybe two of our songs.  We're still experiementing.

No fellow DCites here?  I registered to add my 2 cents...

Everyone is probably familiar with the "harDCore" scene here.  Dischord Records and all associated with them -- Minor Threat, Fugazi, Q and Not U, etc.  RIP all.  Other Dischord artists you may or may not have heard yet:
The Evens - Ian MacKaye's new band
Medications - Great great great live show.  I like their EP better than their album.

Other DC stuff:
Ted Leo - You know him already, I imagine
Head-Roc - Political hiphop
Del Cielo - 3 of the rockingest women in town.  Sadly split up.
des_ark - More DC punk stuff, though they may have split up too.
Travis Morrison - ex Dismemberment Plan
A New Spelling of My Name - Indie-ish emo-ish stuff
Mary Timony - ex Helium
Mass Movement of the Moth -  Do you like loud?  These kids are LOUD!

The Evens are good stuff.

for Kansas, there's really only two bands (That I know of) that I don't detest. One is the Three Businessmen, who are basically like Zappa with less of a budget, most certainly more drugs, and they own a record store. TO THE MAX. Course, no web site, but whatever.

The other is Ad Astra Per Aspera (http://www.purevolume.com/adastraperaspera) who are fairly interesting. Check them out.

We also have a lot of shitty pop-emo bands in the vein of the Get Up Kids and whatnot that really need to stop IMMEDIATLY.

OMFG, LIEK SUM 41 LOLOLOLOL~!@#~

Well no. As a Torontonian I would recommend Broken Social Scene, but I think everyone and their cocker spaniel knows how much they rock by now. However, I can say I've seen em for free... and met them.
More than once.

..
please don't hate me.

Kai:

Aren't Mates of State from Kansas originally?  Though maybe they are one of the bands you despise... I didn't like them at first, but they won me over quickly.  They're so damn happy!
