Title: SOAD
Post by: kitsunefire on 07 Nov 2005, 23:27
I saw System of a Down in Vancouver recently, with Mars Volta and hella opening...besides not liking Hella IT WAS THE BEST CONCERT I've EVER been to!!!
Has anybody else seen them?
And what are your thoughts on the band if you listen to them?
Do you love them or hate them?
Find their lyrics biased or truthful?

They are a more intelligent and complex SOAD with the guitarist from good ol' Bungle.

This is probably going to make me unpopular, but...

I hate System of a Down.

I'm not even kidding. WHOA LOOK WE CAN CONTROL DYNAMICS HOW FUCKING COOL IS THAT? IT'S LIKE WE PLAY LOUD, THEN SOFT, THEN LOUD AGAIN! IT'S TOTALLY AWESOME, YOU SHOULD TRY IT!

Not to mention that they play really really loud to make up for the fact that they... aren't very good. AND that they take metal-style lyrics, which are already ironic in general, and make them SO ironic that only somebody with an IQ of a rock could not understand the satire involved. And then I see people referring to their lyrics as 'intelligent'. Really, so guys talking about how big their dicks are is intelligent now. Fantastic.

I despise Slipkno... I mean SOAD with every bone in my body.
Their first album was quite original sure. It was even reasonably succesful. I didn't mind that. Then they took the exact formula and duplicated it for every album thus far. Each song on each album can be compared directly to a song on the previous album. There's no evolution, just variation.
Secondly, their fans are stupid as all fuck. I'm not directing this at you, I don't know you. However, here in NZ, people who are dedicated SOAD fans are some of the stupidest altnative trendwhores I've ever met.
Thirdly; expose the corruption politics when signed to sony... Ummmm yeah.
So those are my points.

I actually didn't know they wrote a song about that (mostly because I don't ever have a clue what their singer is saying). I was being sarcastic. But the fact that they do indeed have a song on that subject really just proves my point. Barely-veiled metaphors don't make their music any more 'intelligent'.

You could more or less just write 'THIS IS A METAPHOR' on a sledgehammer with a Sharpie marker and beat yourself over the head with it for 10 minutes and get approximately the same effect as listening to a System of a Down album, and kill more or less the same amount of brain cells.

Post by: Kossie on 08 Nov 2005, 03:04
I didn't even think they talked about their dicks as metaphors, after seeing them at the annual Australia 'rock' (I use the term loosely now-a-days) festival, The Big Day Out, SOAD mentioned their dicks outright in a fair few songs just for the sake of it it'd seem. I think if I was about 13 I'd find that sort of thing funny, and with the unintelligence of their lyrics based on pop- anarchy, it seems they've found a new target demographic...

Didn't they say in one of their new songs "Why don't presidents fight wars?" WHOA! HOW PROFOUND SYSTEM OF A DOWN, HOW PROFOUND!

Hella opened for SOAD? Weird, I always thought they were a DIY band. And I'd kill puppies to see them live, the videos I've seen of them are incredible. Can't really see nu-metal fans liking them though, bit of a weird bill for them to be on.

I saw System of a Down live last summer. Everybody else thought they rocked, I thought they sucked a lot.
They didn't move on stage a lot and all of their songs contain way too much shredding and are in fact pretty predictable, especially the newer stuff.

I bet Mars Volta and Hella put on a better show, at least, according to my idea of a good show.
If I see a band live, I expect them to spazz out completely and fucking rock. SOAD just stood there, too cool to move. Only few bands are allowed to do that, Motörhead for example. SOAD however are not.

WHAT?!?!?!? Are you sure they were shredding? Because I once watched a shred-off between two guitarists and a bassist that lasted fifteen minutes, and I wasn't aware there was any such thing as "Too much shredding"

Maybe I'm just a wanker though, but damn.

I would have gone to that show just for Hella and the Mars Volta, but, from what I hear from my Winnipeg buddies, Hella didn't really put on that great of a set. Something involving a coffee mug that really put them off.

But, about SOAD, I think Something Awful summarized my opinion fairly well in this article (http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=3202).

Beat me to it. Dr. Thorpe = FTW.

But yeah. The lyrics? pretty trite. THe music? pretty uninspiring. The worst part? Every time I'm talking about music (And this is me, so most of it is experimental and avant garde, and aot of it is metal) some kid suggests that SOAD is really experimental. Then I proceed to yell and tangent.

They've totally fucked themselves with their new album, because they let their guitarist write the lyrics, and they're pretty retarded and derivative. However, I'm all for not jumping on band-wagons: the first two albums are ok. *gasp* Remember that, when people call them 'experimental' or 'innovative' that they're part of the whole alt-rock/nu-metal scene (the same one that makes Tool look progressive), and really, they aren't actually copying anyone. Their lyrics (used) to be of a reasonable standard, their guitar isn't bad, and they do have a reasonable political consciousness (ironically, the thing they've tried to do most is promote awareness of the Armenian genocide, and, well, ask any of their fans about that...). They're nothing special, quite cool when you're 14 though.

Also, I doubt Slipknot are copying Mr. Bungle. Insane Clown Posse, however (the ones who changed their name from 'Inner City Posse' and started wearing evil clown makeup whilst Bungle were at the height of their popularity), more likely. Though ironically Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat is probably inspired a bit by Mr. Bungle. (they dropped their eclecticism pretty much entirely after that however.)

This is interesting. I remember seeing SOAD with Mr. Bungle a loooong time ago. That was when their first record was barely released first usa tour. Some of their music at the time seemed kinda eclectic, simply because of the mix of waltz with metal (not the smartest mix in my opinion).

They made more speeches than playing music during the show and was pretty politically influencing with the crowd. I got to talk with serj for maybe ten minutes about politics etc. He definitely had a college education about it all, but that was it... pure formatted speech. It really showed me how much of a tool that band really is to the record label and the US government. Their latest record was a prime example of that. BOO!

They're just like every other "non-conforming band" on mtv. They fit the profile for young kids age 13-22 year old pot smoking "non-conformist". It's metallica all over again. Caesar says thumbs down!

How many SOAD fans would even know what the "Axis of Justice" is, much less the genocide?

In case anyone wondered...my freshman year I'd met a descendant of some refugees from the Armenian genocide...and had a report and interview on it. This kid did not know who his grandparents were, and did not have a way to find out. Incidents like that were not uncommon. A "Recommended Listening" link on one of those sites was one of many things that got me listening to their first album.

As for the commentary and music...anyone with an ounce of sarcasm can make a commentary biting into the talent and credibility of ANY band. It also gets easier as the band gets more popular, because now you can look even MORE witty by making fun of the fans. I found the last album enjoyable...but found myself getting over it reaaaaaally fast. Their music and political message are still...educated, but somewhat uninspired. It's like they've lost a lot of momentum...if they found a new take on it, they'd be more respectable, albeit less "palatable" to public taste.

I enjoy it...but then again, I don't take myself OR music too seriously. Certainly not so much that I can't enjoy it...even if there are trendwhores who like it, too.

The exception to that is Jazz. NOBODY but nobody is allowed to fuck with Jazz.

Holy shit, that guy's a real douche. He also appears to be a Rammstien fan, judging by his shirt, and that's a shame. I happen to quite like Rammstein, and SOAD. I don't look for any insightful comments in their music, just good times. If I'm in the mood for some fairly hard and upbeat music, SOAD usually fits the bill. Some people freak over them way too much, but the same can be said for people that bitch about them all the time. I used to absolutely love System of a Down ... now there are only a few songs I like.  Some of their songs are a hell of a lot of fun to listen to, even if they don't break any new ground.  Serj is a hell of a singer, and even if they've gotten significantly less interesting as they've evolved, that doesn't make the older stuff any less cool.  I'll still pull out the self-titled or Toxicity every now and then, and sure, I skip half the tracks, but I'm rockin' out to the other half.  I could fill an entire mix with SOAD tracks, and I'd like the whole CD, even if I didn't listen to it all the time.

Also, the track "Patterns" that Serj did with Tony Iommi is fucking amazing.  If System of a Down always sounded like that, I'd be listening to them all the time.
