Title: Christmas Mixxx
Post by: Johnny C on 22 Nov 2005, 16:13
I get a ride to school every morning with another fellow. This other fellow drives three other people to school, as well. We're all going to make a holiday mix CD for the coming weeks, and each week will be dedicated to one CD.

What I would like is if you guys could help me come up with a tracklisting and also maybe some YSI (http://www.yousendit.com)s or something. I'm thinking "covers of traditional tunes" mixed with occasional "christmas novelty songs."

I was trying to do this myself so I could listen to some decent music at my store (which now sells Christmas ornaments)  Here's what I found.

Blue Christmas - Bright Eyes
Little Drum Machine Boy - Beck
Lonely Christmas Eve - Ben Folds
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Death Cab for Cutie
Christmas at the Zoo - The Flaming Lips
Everythings Gonna Be Cool This Christmas - The Eels
Christmas Is Going to the Dogs - The Eels
Carol Of The Bells - Phantom Planet
Thank God It's Christmas - Queen
Merry Christmas - Wesley Willis

If you want any of these I can put it up on You send it

The Flaming Lips' "Christmas At the Zoo," whether it's really about Christmas or simply takes place at Christmastime is up for debate though.

If it's your thing, Low also has an eight-song EP of Christmas songs, including an original or two.

And Tristan da Cunha had an incredible cover of "Winter Wonderland" but I don't think they ever recorded it, nor are they a widely bootlegged band. Might be worth hunting for if you have the p2p tools.

Yeah it is kind of a stretch, I was just trying to make a christmas mix and ran out of real christmas songs.

I actually do have a christmas song by the flaming lips I forgot about. it's
A Change At Christmas(Say it Aint So) - The Flaming Lips

Stuff like that passes for Christmas songs on most recent Christmas samplers, and at least the Flaming Lips are good.

Anyone else have the CD Just Say Noël? It's pretty shabby, mostly songs with vague Christmas themes. XTC has a quality song on it, "Thanks For Christmas," and there are a couple more including the aforementioned Beck track, but mostly it's middling quality.

And if I felt like really splitting hairs I'd mention that "Little Drum Machine Boy" is really more of a Hannukah song, mostly.

I have the track "A Change At Christmas" and it's making it on there. Otherwise, if those who mentioned the tracks have copies of them and could get them to me for entirely personal-use purposes that would be grand.

You kids are fast.
http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0A4MRR3QAL61G04DX6WXO6FNES - XTC, "Thanks For Christmas"

The Aimee Mann and Michael Penn track from that compilation is good too, if you're into Aimee Mann and Michael Penn.

I also found a Bright Eyes Christmas EP that fits onto a CD perfectly with the Low Christmas EP, making for the most depressing holiday CD ever.

Here's one I made for this year:

1) Vince Gauraldi - Christmas Time Is Here (Instrumental)
2) Frank Sinatra - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
3) Vince Gauraldi - Skating
4) Elvis Prestley - Here Comes Santa Claus
5) Jose Feliciano - Feliz Navidad
6) Frank Sinatra - Let it Snow
7) Vince Gauraldi - Linus & Lucy
8) Gene Autry - Frosty the Snowman
9) Harry Simeone Chorale - Little Drummer Boy
10) Perry Como - It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
11) Vince Gauraldi - Christmastime is Here (Vocal)
12) Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
13) Leontyne Price - Ave Maria
14) Elvis Prestley - Blue Christmas
15) Bing Crosby - White Chrismas
16) Burl Ives - A Holly Jolly Christmas
17) Nat King Cole - Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)
18) Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Let's Boogy to the Elf Dance!
19) Dean Martin - Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let it Snow!
20) Alvin and the Chipmunks - The Chimpmunk Song
21) Gene Autry - Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer
22) Bobby Helms - Jingle Bell Rock
23) Nat King Cole - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
24) Chuck Berry - Run Run Rudolph
25) Pery Como - Oh Holy Night
26) Sufjan Stevens - That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!

Some notes: I realize that a lot of these are on those Christmas CDs you can buy with a mix of classics, but none of them have all of them and the ones that do (Time Life 3 CDs) are too large and have to wade through ones I don't like. And also: I realize there are a lot of songs, but it's supposed to be played in the background, especially on Christmas and not actively listened to. And it all fits on one disc at 1:17 hours.

If anybody is interested, I'll yousendit later.

Mint Records put out a great Christmas compilation featuring The Evaporators (http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=366TTXYZD6P2L31LUZR0JTZDQL) (Nardwar's group) and Duotang (http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=27BLRQV3Y0NJC0M014EGS3WBA6) (the original Canadian drums and bass duo).

Also, this seriously cheap compilation by "The Quality Kids" doing Christmas classics in hip hop style for children. Check out "Auld Lang Syne (http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3VXASA7INFKOM21WZ7FY53U62Z)".

Sufjan has three Christmas albums.

I'm making a Christmas mix, but none of the songs are Christmas songs.  It's more a "songs I could see myself listening to while driving in the snow" mix, and it's kickass.

Here's my personal mix atm:

King Diamond - No Presents for Christmas
Current 93 - Happy Birthday Pigface Christus
Inkubus Sukkubus - Hail the Holly King
The Vandals - Oi to the World
Nightwish - Walking in the Air
Within Temptation - Gothic Christmas
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
X-Mas Project - Jingle Bells
Ulver - Christmas

I'm not recommending any of those as being in your tastes, though it's pretty inexcusable not to have Fairytale of New York.

Three Christmas Albums!?! Isn't that a bit excessive.
I thought he only had like four normal albums

Can you put Fairy Tale Of New York on Yousendit?
That would be awesome

More of a winter/elf theme than a Christmas theme, but whose keeping score?

The Olivia Tremor Control - Holiday Surprise, 1, 2, 3
Guided By Voices - Kicker of Elves
Animal Collective - Winter's Love
The Fall - Elves
The Fiery Furnaces - Tropical Iceland
Disco Inferno - Footprints in Snow
Vashti Bunyan - Turning Backs

The ultimate Christmas novelty song, imho, is "I Won't Be Twisting This Christmas" by Father Guido Sarducci.

Anyway... I really ought to get this (http://musicbrainz.org/album/4f761ead-078c-4375-8547-08d93e595c17.html) on CD. They added a coupla bonus tracks that weren't on the 1983 version. (Although the Suicide track is missing... wth? Maybe not.)

Jethro Tull did the greatest Christmas song ever.

Plus Bruce Springsteen signing Santa Claus is coming to Town is pretty good. :P It's a B-side on some single he released.

At a bit of a big stretch you could use further north by jets to brazil

It's not christmas related as such but it's a sorta snowy wintery type of song.

Plus for comedic value: The Vandals - my first christmas (as a woman)

Mew - She Came Home for Christmas

"Noel," "Fairytale..." (thanks Khar!), "Splitting Up Christmas," "Holiday Surprise...", "Kicker Of Elves," "364 Days", and what the hell, "Further North." Could I see those? They would bring my mix to completion.
