We had a similar topic with male vocalists, and a 'greatest guitarist ever' topic, but never one to just list guys with guitars that you think are awesome. Mine:

I see no Tom Morello on that list. Why do I see no Tom Morello on that list?
-
That is what this topic is for. So you can add him.
And to be honest, I never understood why people thought Morello was that great.

Both Oysterhead and Storm Rider's list are pretty much mine. ALthough I'm going to have to add a few:

plus he's a fuckin' freak, boning his guitars like that
-
First person to post Curt Kobain gets shot.
Totally a precaution; not many forums you can go on with a thread like this and avoid him like the plague. Also:
Olve 'Abbath Doom Occulta' Eikemo
Coolest Black Metal name EVER.

How the hell did I forget

I am kicking myself for forgetting Townshend, Tipton and Downing.

Pretty much everyone I would've said- but you can't forget:

Yngwie Malmsteen
-
Yngwie wanks guitars so hard, they ejaculate. In a good way. Positive ejaculation.
Also, it appears I forgot:

Grant Green

WHAT?! All this way into a badass guitarists thread and there's been no mention of Brian May? Y'all oughtta be ashamed.

And John Lennon? Come on, people.

And lastly, the guy on the right, Peppino D'Augustino. I saw him in concert, a small little shindig thrown together by my friend Mike who owns the guitar shop Fretted Friends in Livermore, CA. Peppino D'Augustino was there, and he's a TOTAL BADASS.
-
AUGH HOW DID I FORGET MARK KNOPFLER.

We're the Sultans of Swing.
-
Phil Lynott

what a dude.

Craig Finn.
John Darnielle.
And Springsteen.
-

Is there such a thing as negative ejaculation?
Furthermore, while I totally respect Yngwie's talent, I cannot listen to him all the time. His blatant disregard for song structure is something I can only indulge myself in occasionally.

THIS THREAD LACKS LOVE FOR BO DIDDLEY
Heh, I had him sign my old guitar. I still have it. Here's a picture! ^__^
-
[/img]Craig Finn.
I saw The Hold Steady play with Thunderbirds Are Now! and The Constantines a few weeks ago. Everyone in The Hold Steady and TAN! are so short, then the Constantines come onstage and they are a bunch of lanky fuckers (except for Dallas)... It was funny.
I thought the Hold Steady were pretty annoying, Craig Finn was spitting all over the audience and dancing around like he has Parkinson's disease (not trying to be an insensitive prick, but it's true). In addition to this, their keys were turned up so overbearingly loud that it made them sound all muddled. I suppose that's not so bad because I didn't have to hear Craig Finn's voice. ;)
-
how can anyone forget Linsey Buckingham?
-
They built a palace out of him.
-
Ian Williams (Don Caballero, Battles)

The guys from Oxes

Ouch! I love the Hold Steady live. I've seen them five times now. But I can believe that happened...they were cranked too high the last time I saw them. And yeah, they and TAN! are...not tall.
-
Otra Romppanen, from Mana Mana, Psychoplasma, Enter and a whole bunch of other weirdo bands. His uncanny wall-of-sound is just amazing.
Oh yeah, Tony Iommi is a god also.

Brendan McGinn (Her Flyaway Manner)

That right there? The coolest guitar ever. IT'S SQUARE FUCK THE WHAT

Brody Dalle makes me think dirty thoughts.
You made me think of this. (http://www.nothingnice.com/comics/20051128.jpg)
Girl guitarists are awesome, though, like Rachel Rosen (Most Precious Blood):

That right there is a bass guitar in the shape of a Jack Daniel's bottle.

Eric Clapton.
-
Eric Clapton goes without saying. Quoth a London wall, "Clapton is God." Well, hell, I've just switched from an atheist to a priest.
And yeah, still on the subject of Bo Diddley, he even let me play his Gretsch box. It was AWESOME. Like, imagine playing Clapton's "Blackie" or Jimmy Page's "Number 1". THAT IS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE.
-
(http://www.theepochtimes.com/news_images/2005-4-8-shankar.jpg)
Ravi Shankar!
Alright, I know he plays the sitar, but he simply is amazing at it. I mean, Ama fucking Zing.
-
Now THAT is an instrument I want to learn to play right there.
-
Jon Gomm!
The man is simply a genius.
http://www.myspace.com/jongomm
-
Justin King.
-
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Joey Eppard
Buddy Guy
Jimi Hendrix
and of course, Jimmy Page.
-
What happened to the pictures, people?
-
Just to add a few Robert Johnson, Jay Farrar, Nels Cline, Jerry Garcia, and Duane Allman.
-
Heh, I wrote and recorded a song the other day, and it has a key change at the end which features a massive guitar harmony, and I thought to myself, "Duane Allman would be proud."
So yeah I second him.
-
that picture of Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye on the first page = badass.
on a less awesome note, no one mentioned Leo Kottke :(
(http://www.stardem.com/Photos/3230_32414431.jpg)
-
Kinda late, but thank God someone mentioned Television. They were one of the best guitar bands in rock.
-
I third Duane Allman. Can't believe I forgot the guy.
Jeff Beck.
Also, I really don't know why Television gets so much praise; They're really not all that great, interesting, or guitar wise, "something to write home about".
-
that picture of Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye on the first page = badass.
on a less awesome note, no one mentioned Leo Kottke :(
(http://www.stardem.com/Photos/3230_32414431.jpg)
Second the Leo Kottke.
-
I cannot believe I forgot this woman:
Wata from Boris. Oh my god she's good. I didn't even notice the rest of the band when I saw them play.
Oh, and I very much second that Oxes recommendation.
-
So all my favorites are posted already, except for ...
Chris Goss
(http://users.breathe.com/martinsloan/frank03.jpg)
-
Don't forget...
Adrian Belew (Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson, the Bears, and more)
Agata (Melt Banana)
Jim O'Rourke (Gastr Del Sol, Sonic Youth, various solo, collaborative, production works)
-
GUYS

George Harrison ftw!
-
The Quiet Beatle's back there, sir. Cute little pic of him too.
-
Yeah, I think we had George up there, but yeah. George totally trumps over Lennon.
-
(http://www.acidcasualties.com/album_covers/whothe.jpg)
Who The Fuck?
-
http://www.geocities.com/morellofiend/tom73.jpg
Yay Tom. Even if you left us for the band that shall not be mentioned.
-
The Quiet Beatle's back there, sir. Cute little pic of him too.
Oh, I'm no saying he wasn't there, I'm just saying he wins.
But now that I'm looking back in the thread I don't see him. I see the one I posted of Lennon though. :\
-
John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
-
to the guy that posted Craig Finn, I love him one of my favorite front men ever, but really he doesn't do anything on guitar other than swing it around and hit it a little. The other guitar player in the band (Tad Kubler) is the really great one, and he is really great.
-
John. Fuckin'. Petrucci.
-
^Welcome, brother. We have been waiting.
-
If we're re-stating love for previously mentioned guitarists, I feel honour bound to give you this picture of Ritchie Blackmore demonstrating probably the greatest contrast of really gimpy costume versus really sick chops in history:
Seriously, you need to have written Smoke on the Water to get away with that.
Also, I want to expand this thread. Favourite stringed instrumentalists! Where else will I get to show my love of Georgina Biddle, Fiddler extraodinaire and the Skyclad member with the most amusing hair:
Edit:
And also, because I was keeping to pictures of guitarists with guitars before:
DAN MOTHERFUCKING SWANO (Altar, Another Life, Bloodbath*, Brejn Dedd, Canopy, Diabolical Masquerade, Edge of Sanity, Godsend, Incision, Infestdead, Karaboudjan, Katatonia*, Maceration, Masticate, Moontower, Nightingale, Odyssey, Overflash, Pan.Thy.Monium, Ribspreader, Route Nine, Star One**, Steel, Total Terror, Unicorn, Mahlstrom, Sorskogen)
*/** One starred he only did drums for, two starred he only sang for, but damn they make the list look cooler. This man can slay on pretty much any instrument.
-
Michael Hedges.
-
Second the Dan Swano.
