What bands do you like, that plenty of people have heard of, but that nobody really seems to listen to? I don't mean don't listen to in the sense of "Everyone but me thinks this band sucks", I mean bands that everyone seems to agree are good, but which for some inexplicable reason get a collective shrug of indifference.
I'm going to nominate the Silver Jews. Why they're not more popular is an absolute mystery to me. Every indie fan in the world should own a copy of American Water, it's a stone-cold classic.
No criticising other people's musical tastes, please - hate's not cool, kids! Also, would-be hipster snobs note: this is not a thread for talking about wildly obscure bands that nobody's ever heard of. I'm sure there's another thread somewhere for that kind of thing.
. . . Aaaand - go!!

Personally I have to go with the Gin Blossoms on this one.
-
I want to nominate a specific record: Foo Fighters' The Colour and the Shape.

Are they well known? I've heard of the Silver Jews, and the Foor Fighters, but not the Gin Blossoms.
I've not got anyone that really counts under this.
-
Gin Blossoms are kind of defunct aren't they? Mid-90's and stuff.
Silver Jews are great. I do own a copy of American Water! :D

That's what I was going to say...but then I realized I just bought the new Harvey Danger record so I shouldn't talk. (Harvey Danger continue to be good by the way, but they don't quite qualify as well-known. Unless you speak the lyrics to "Flagpole Sitta' aloud.)

feeder perhaps? or solo work by john frusciante?
-
I own 'American Water' and think the Silver Jews are nifty, too! Also I agree that the Foo Fighters 2nd album is underrated. The Gin Blossoms' 'Congratulations I'm Sorry' was a pretty good album as well.
I guess I could add Blind Melon. 'Soup' is a great record.

Electric Light Orchestra
-
Seconded.
-
I'm going to throw Cake out there.

The Kinks. I really wish more people here knew the Kinks.
-
Loooove the white stripes
-
I'm seconding the Kinks. Everyone knows of 'em, but noone really seems to appreciate.
-
The B-52s. I'm dead serious.
-
I've always dug on Rage Against The Machine's "Battle of Los Angeles." Everyone loves their self-titled, but BoLA is a richly textured and well-paced album. Rather the same situation as with the Foo Fighters and Colour and the Shape, actually.
I've also got a soft spot for Dr. Dre's "2001."
-
I've got to second the Silver Jews.
American Water is a classic. I love it, but they are so unknown.
I think i've spun american water in my car for more than a week straight. It's just that good. Berman/Malkmus are a great combo. I was just depressed that he chose his wife's vocals for the new album.

Sebadoh.

Practically everyone I talk to about music at any point agrees that You Am I are one of the best rock bands of the last 20 years, yet I rarely meet anyone that listens to them on any sort of regular basis.
It's a little terrifying.
The B-52s. I'm dead serious.
Yes yes yes! I listen to them all the time. I find it hard to believe there are people out there who don't have to physically restrain themselves from dancing everytime a B-52's song comes on
-
The best I get is a "Who the hell are You Am I?" I don't meet nearly enough people who are into music nerdery.
-
I'm waiting for Sounds As Ever to go back down to $20. It was there a number of years ago but I didn't have the money to buy it. Now I do have the money, it's back at $30! Annoying!
In my opinion You Am I got progressively less interesting after that . . . but then, I haven't really listened to any of their songs for about 7 or 8 years, so maybe I should revisit them.
Also, I'm glad I'm not the only Jews fan 'round these parts!

Quoted for emphasis. Whenever I hear rock lobster I break out with a case of "pure-awesome-itis".
-
I'm going to throw Cake out there.
Yeah I don't know why more people don't love them.
I also don't get why XTC don't get more props.
I used "props" I need to be shot.

Especially these days when every British band under the sun is basically rehashing X.T.C.'s old moves. And the kids don't even know what the original sounds like! Maybe everybody who buys a Franz Ferdinand C.D. should be made to listen to "Senses Working Overtime".
Also everybody who doesn't buy a Franz Ferdinand C.D. God-damn that's an awesome song.
-
collective soul.
everybody's heard of them, or at least everyone should be familiar with them, but when i saw them in concert in december, they weren't even the headliners. flickerstick opened (bleh), then collective soul played, and then cake. i love cake, but collective soul is way higher in my book. sure, they hadn't done anything in a few years before this recent album, but they deserve better.

collective soul.
Who?

Everclear.
Everclear Everclear Everclear Everclear Everclear Everclear Everclear.
So Much For The Afterglow could quite possibly be better than your life.

The Kinks. I really wish more people here knew the Kinks.
Motion seconded. The defense moves to have the Kinks declared "Most Underated Band of the 1970s".
Counselor?
