Title: Banned XBox 360 Ad.

I saw this and I had to laugh, just because of the idea and because I don't see a reason why it had to be banned.

My personal favorites are the grenade and the guy right before the grenade.

Heh, even though I hate XBox, that's one of the best commercials I've ever seen. The people who canceled it should be severely punished.

PFFT. They don't believe in make-believe bazookas?! Isn't that like the first thing people will whip out in an "air"-gun fight?? And no body armor?! Don't these people know how to fake-cheat? And what about laser guns?! Weak sauce.

i'm pretty sure one of the guys towards the end was packin' an air bazooka, actually...

(well not really, since toy bazookas that "shoot" air really do exist. i think thinkgeek.com sells them. but you get what i mean).

That's classic stuff.  That so should have come out.

these guys are probably the reason that the comercial got banned.  If that commercial was in a gym it would be almost exactly the same thing.  The major difference is that MS had money and OE didn't.  At least OE is getting lots of attention now because everyone complaining about MS ripping them off.

Um, that Olde English video is pretty dumb.  And while it certainly bears certain resemblances to the ad, I would hardly characterize it as "almost exactly the same thing."  For starters, the implication that it isn't just a game, that their hands are actually functioning firearms.

Also, while some sites say that ad is banned, others say that's a rumor and the ad isn't shown on TV because it was only ever meant for online.  Some suggest that the rumor is just a publicity thing to get people to watch the ad.

a little off topic, but wow on the olde english reference.  They were a small sketch comedy group on my campus last year.  Their life performances were pretty good, but a lot of the videos suck.  When they are funny, they are really funny.

I doubt that, a banned add would not get near the market penetration that an official one would.  Even if it was a web only add, it would get seen alot more for fed to people on website not dedicated to showing little videos of random crap.

it was done in spaced long before oldeenglish did it, and they did it better too

and i doubt that it was banned due to oldeenglish (though i do like that sketch, i watched them all a while ago) OR spaced, it's just too graphic for america's sensitive sensitive eyes

i remember the xbox ad that got banned too, the baby being shot out and flying and turning into an old guy and landing in his grave
kinda freaky

and clever advertising
maybe when they realised that EVERYONE wanted to see the banned one and subsequently get an xbox, they payed for this to be banned

WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS i <3 spaced

Yeah I'm with the rest of you all.  I don't understand really the need for banning it.  Even if it was, as it's been shown it wasn't, ripped from another company, microsoft would have known that / realized it, and bought em off.

that's what they do.

Anyway, very funny.  I giggled at work.  and yeah Mike, the cab driver was the best.

My favourite is the dude in the X-wing Uniform, but I'm a star wars geek, so what do you expect. I prefer the OE one for sure though.

That was hilarious!

Two things:

1.  I don't see what it has to do with the XBox, or Video Gaming as a whole...

2.  I can understand why people wanted it off the air.  Violence and all that.  I don't think it should have been banned, but I can see why the fundamentalists/conservatives would've had a cry about it.

This commercial was apparently shown at the Microsoft 360 launch, and was supposedly intended to be broadcast at some point in the future.  The only people who know whether it will ever be broadcast is the Microsoft PR department.  It was not "banned" by government "censors" since it was never broadcast, and American television censors (ie. the FCC) do not get to review commercials before they are broadcast.  It is possible that one of the major networks refused to play the commercial, but this is unlikely because usually such rejections are considered newsworthy in the entertainment press, and there has been no report of any such rejection.

All of that being said, it would be a really terrible idea for Microsoft to release this ad on network television.  I'm fairly certain that the last thing the automatic weapon toting National guardsmen want to see in Grand Central station is a bunch of asshat teenagers imitating this commercial during rush hour.  True -- this may happen anyway given the broad replaying that this commercial is getting over the web.  But the cool thing about internet meme/viral marketing is that as it stands, if something bad happens because of this commercial, Microsoft can always  say that it was never intended for general distribution.  If it were broadcast -- well there goes the plausible deniability.

And, yes, I think it's pretty cool too.

Then I stand firmly corrected as far as the banned or not banned status of this commercial goes.  Hate to misinform people, even about the most menial things.

I think it's awesome that teenagers will mimic this commercial if it comes out.

I think it's also awesome that teenagers act dangerous/stupid/insane/homicidal and then blame video games.

I think it's - again - awesome that government officials (Senators, Congresspersons, MPs, etc) buy into it, and blame the games/game-commercials.

And lastly, I think it's truly awesome that there is no proof of violence amongst youth increasing - per capita - with the advance of technology in video games, and yet we face an 'epidemic' according to some people.

Apparantly people were never violent until this past century, when movies, music and games made them that way.  The crusades, conquistadors, civil wars, slavery... none of these things actually happened.  We've only become evil because of technology, people!
