The more I look around, the more I find that I'm the one of only two people I know of who can accept music is crap but still enjoy it. Plenty of people I know like crap music, they just think it's good music.
Does anyone else enjoy bad music?
Better yet, does anyone else like deliberately bad music/think it's funny? My band make deliberately shite 'music,' although some of the last album borderlined on melody, and have great fun of it. We've also sold over 12 albums. Anyone at all?
-
Most of the time, if music is truly bad, I can't really stand to listen to it. However, as you said, there is the exception of humorously horrible music; I don't come across a lot of that though.
-
Love it. Am pretty much addicted to Bowling for Soup.
-
I like Coldplay and Fallout Boy. Oh, and Motion City Soundtrack.
-

*shamelessly plugs his own band*
-
I think, just in terms of marketability, truly 'bad' music is pretty rare. But mediocre music is very common.
-
I feel like somebody should mention the Shaggs, the most defective-sounding pop band ever.
And I listen to a lot of stuff that most people with decent musical taste hate, so I'm guessing it's actually bad music, but I have a hard time telling the difference if I like listening to it. I'm pretty bad at being objective about bands I like.
*edit: Actually, I like a lot of stuff that's poorly recorded and performed (punk rock), unoriginal (punk-pop), repetetive (a lot of noise music), boring (drone/doom metal), and so forth, but usually I can only handle one or two bad elements at a time.
-
I love listening to Breaking Benjamin. And they're horrid.
Same with Black Star Morning.
So yeah, me too. There are defintley horrible musicians I love listening to.
-
I find myself agreeing with Dara's comment on this one. I think people who go around spouting that 99% of music is bad are really annoying.
I personally listen to a fair bit of music that is deliberately poorly recorded/ineptly played and happen to enjoy it for it's aesthetic, spontaneous nature and even it's difficulty. Explaining myself to others in that context is difficult. Only popular thing that some people think is bad that I have is my eighty-eight cent cassette copy of Van Halen's "1984". How is it possible to not like "Jump"?
-
I used to listen to that song "Confessions" by Usher because I thought it was soooo ridiculously ridiculous. I memorised all the words and could sing the whole thing because I wanted to do an acoustic version of it for the talent show at my school. Yeah, I know I'm awesome. ;)
-
I enjoy listening to Die Kassierer and Eisenpimmel. They are bad, Die Kassierer just because the lyrics are beyond disgusting and idiotic, Eisenpimmel because of lyrics that fall into the same category and the fact that they can't play their instruments.
But what can I say? It makes me laugh.
Also, there's nothing like listening to some really retarded songs about getting drunk or dick infections or whatever after you've read 40 pages of uni stuff.
-
Most of the british invasion.
-
i've been listening to Fall Out Boy's cover of "Save Your Generation" by Jawbreaker a few times over the last couple days, if only to try and figure out how they possibly managed to take one of my favorite songs ever and render it damn near unlistenable.
-
i love listening to default, three days grace, breaking benjamin, and nickelback. i also like to listen to the top 40 pop junk. i know it's junk music, but it's so fun to sing along to. the bands that i actually love are too difficult to sing with, or the songs don't have words. i need my singing fix.

You have clearly never turned on your copy of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and screamed the lyrics while driving on the interstate like I have.
-
i listen to bad music all the time, on purpose, for mocking purposes.
girls of summer- lfo. funniest thing EVER. read the lyrics and try not to laugh.
NEW KIDS.
donny's my fave.

i am listening to hear where you aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeee....

I listen to some music some folks might consider "Mediocre" but in terms of appallingly bad, you cannot go past "The Hollar Dores"
They write songs about screwing underage chicks, and they have a romantic duet which has the catch line "Your love is sweet and moist and tender, like a vagina, trapped in a blender"
I like to think of them as Anal Cunt, except a bit more subtle, and if AC got bored and tried to play Pop Punk instead.
I think they broke up a while ago, and I have only seen them a few times, but I will never forget my 18th birthday, when some friends and I hit the main indie music place in my city and saw these guys belting out their stuff, like crazed madmen. Truely a great moment in my life.
-
Oh yeah, bad music can be enjoyable. Spice girls. But also I can enjoy listening to for instance the village people. Or awful German dance by Scooter. Zero quality, lots of fun.
-
Most of the british invasion.
There was an invasion? What and nobody invited me?!
Damn.
My favourite 'bad' music = Hanson
-

This sounds like a most excellent band. Do they have a website? (It's 11.40pm and I'm tired)
-
Freakin Chumbawamba, man. It doesn't get worse than that, and "Tubthumping" makes me want to get pissed and break things...in a happy way.
And Green Day...it was like a part of my childhood and I can't give it up.
OOH and MC Chris...it's nerd rap. Hilarious, but AWFUL for sure.
-
You know, Chumbawamba is actually underrated. Everyone talks about that one song, which does get a bit annoying (although I agree it's fun :) ) but their lyrics are surprisingly intelligent, and their music, while rather eclectic, isn't as bad as one might suspect.
-

high-pitched voice aside, mc chris is by no means a bad rapper. his rhymes be pretty tight.
-
girls of summer- lfo. funniest thing EVER. read the lyrics and try not to laugh.
I remember when that was out...didn't actually get what the lyrics were about, now I have followed your suggestion and read them, I still have no idea.
Most people would consider Evanescence bad music, but I don't and like them. Shh.
I am ashamed that there are a couple of Shakira songs I like to dance to. Coz they make me feel sexy.
-
I fucking LOVE Flickerstick, and most people I know who know anything about music think they're terrible.
-

Ack, no. Their lyrics are cringeworthy, I could barely watch last time I saw them (I was there for Rob Newman's stand-up). Far too crude, and although I don't mind crude in a lot of bands if you're playing folk then you need to be a bit more subtle.
-

I'm literally choking on my own rage here. When I first joined this board, there were a bajillion people who listen to Jawbreaker, now it's a rare breed. This makes me sad.
-
I enjoy Cradle of Filth far beyond the point at which it is grim and tr00 to dismiss them as scene traitors.
-
This sounds like a most excellent band. Do they have a website? (It's 11.40pm and I'm tired)
http://www.mp3.com.au/artist.asp?id=9671
It's got a few of their MP3s and a very bizzare description of the bands history.
As for MC Chris, I love the dude, but seriously, DQ Blizzard makes me want to bang my head against a wall.
-
I <3 Dragostea Din Tei by O-zone!!!!
You know, that Romanian song?
Nu ma, nu ma iei,
Nu ma, nu ma iei,
Nu ma, nu ma, nu ma iei. :)
It reminds me of Eurovision (and therefore the legendary Terry Wogan) and is so incredibly cheesy that it's great!!!
-

well, yeah, DQ Blizzard isn't his strongest material.
skibas: is your choking rage directed at Fall Out Boy, or at the rarity of Jawbreaker fans here?
-
I <3 Dragostea Din Tei by O-zone!!!!
me too. that song is like crack. it's really popular in japan too... even without the internet video of dancing guy. many of my students know all the words in romanian too, and they sing it all the time. i can't get them to speak english with me, but mention numa numa and they'll go off in romanian...
-
I fucking LOVE Flickerstick, and most people I know who know anything about music think they're terrible.
well, I only know two tracks (lift and coke) but they're not bad are they? Well, you'll say they're not bad obviously, but why do those people you know say that? what's wrong with flickerstick?
-
Does anyone else enjoy bad music?
nope. and it's getting worse. i can't really deal with mediocre music much these days either.
it's getting towards the point where i can't enter a shopping centre or similar place without headphones at the ready, and my ability to have a good time in pubs or clubs (that aren't palying something i deem 'good', which given my tastes, is most of the time) or tag along to gigs i'm not that into with friends is kinda diminished.
IT'S REALLY ANNOYING! HOW DO I FIX IT?

By not being so ridiculously close minded and intolerant?

Salada, ignore him. I know your pain, very much so.

That's because you're an elitist. ¬_¬

I was listening to the radio sometime last year and I heard the most horrendously bad song that I had to download it right away. It was called 'I believe my heart' by Duncan and Keedie. It's so awful! The lyrics make me cry from laughter.
Every so often I would send it to one of my housemates computer over the network and set an mp3 alarm so that the song would come on repeat in the morning to wake them up.
Most people would consider Evanescence bad music, but I don't and like them. Shh.
What I like about them is that they called themself 'Evanescence'. I mean, I had to look it up to know what it meant (disappearing like vapour) but I wonder if they knew and did it as a joke or had some other interpretation or if they just thought that it sounded cool.
-

I'd suggest the latter.
-
O But also I can enjoy listening to for instance the village people.
If You Don't Like the Village People, You're Fucking Gay - Anal Cunt
-
I used to like Dashboard Confessional's Swiss Army Romance, and still do though I haven't listened to it in a while.
-

Apparently they looked through the dictionary and found it.
-
You know, they could have easily called their band Rumatoid Arthritis. :P
-
nope. and it's getting worse. i can't really deal with mediocre music much these days either.
Amen. I've applied for a job at a music store... I think I may go mad if I get the job.
At least no one has admitted to liking Crazy Frog.
-
IT'S REALLY ANNOYING! HOW DO I FIX IT?
Drink. A lot. Whenever you go to a place that is going to play terrible music, drink an obscene amount of liquor(and also get stoned if thats your thing) and you will probably be ok. And if you don't particularly like drinking to excess and getting high, on a whim, in order to solve this problem, you are screwed and you're just gonna have to learn to deal with it.
Sorry.
-
At least no one has admitted to liking Crazy Frog.
it literally infuriates me that people actually by those CDs. Crazy Frog can suck it.
-

If anyone did, which I believe is an impossibility, they would never tell us, since that would mean that they failed at taste.

*gasp* What dancing guy????!!!!!!!!!
Anyone know the link?

OUT-THUNKED.

The real music video is better than the dancing dude, but not by much.
Oh..erm, STACKER 2!
-

And failed at life.
life>crazy frog fans.

Well I thought the proper video was ACE and now you're saying the dancing guy isn't far behind?! Come to me dancing guy! Let me see your glory!

One word... GWAR!
If anyone's really bored, they've got a few videos up on Yahoo! Music Videos. For actual musical worthiness (or as close as they can get to it) I'd recommend Immortal Corruptor and Sick of You, for just plain wierdity I'd recommend Meat Sandwich (yes, they really do sing a song about meat sandwiches, no innuendo intended) and War Party. Not quite sure what my opinion of Bring Back The Bomb is yet.
And if you're bored enough to go watch the videos and are still bored, go check out their website and read their bio pages and FUQ (frequently unasked questions).
-
Thank you Mr. Kenny Wallace, sir!
-
Drink. A lot.
i can do that. easily. grocery shopping whilst off my face may be a little difficult though. i'd probably wake up with a terrible hangover and a freezer full of choc-mint paddlepops.
...not that that's really a bad thing.
-
Welcome to my world.
-
By not being so ridiculously close minded and intolerant?
So wait. Everyone who doesn't share your opinions on music is close-minded and intolerant?
Way to twist my words.
Whoever I was talking to - it might have been you, I lost track - was talking about finding any music they didn't like so mind numbingly annoying that they couldn't go into malls any more without headphones or something.
I don't care if you hate the music I listen to, that is totally intolerant. I hate almost all of the crap that gets played in most supermarkets and shopping centres, but I manage to ignore it or tune it out.
-
I occasionally listen to Aqua
And Dragostea din tei is pure awesomeness
-
In general I try to be tolerant, but most music pisses me off. I can dig stuff in most of the genres I hear, but I tend to be picky within genres. However, I have a terrible secret.
I like ICP, and were you to see me in the street tomorrow, I could recite all of "Chicken Huntin'" to you without batting an eye. Hey, middle school was hell for everyone.
Juggalo shit 4 LIFE!
-
Yay go the Hanson
I so want to meet them.
-

What's your point then? What's the difference between ignoring music and listening to something else?
-
I listen to a lot of really bad, bad metal. Vondur is a good example. Vondur is impaled northern moonforest, minus the long songtitles, with actual lyrics (I guess.), and actual instruments being played (just barely, though)
-
So it takes all the fun out on Northern Impaled Moonforest and adds a bunch of serious...ness?
-

Hmm. A good point.

Every now and then I like to spring stuff like this (http://norma.fam-lee.net/songs/The_Fresher_The_Better.mp3) and This (http://norma.fam-lee.net/songs/The_Pride_Of_Atlanta.mp3) on unsuspecting people.
And sometimes, when I'm feeling particularly vindictive, I pop this (http://norma.fam-lee.net/songs/AskJesus.mp3) on someone.
I think I just won the thread.

I take a lot of pleasure in Lil Markie. This shit is FUCKED UP. Check out Diary of an Unborn Child (http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0510/markie/02_-_Lil_Markie_-_Diary_Of_An_Unborn_Child.mp3). It gets really good around the three minute mark. For the patient, there's also Story of an Alcoholic Father (http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0510/markie/05_-_Lil_Markie_-_Story_Of_An_Alcoholic_Father__Somethings_Happened_To_Daddy_.mp3). Check out Lil Markie live in concert with
I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE (http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0510/lilmarkie.mov).

I own, it wasn't even a gift, Limp Bizkits album New Old Songs. I see myself falling, when I land its gonna hurt.

Yeah, that doesn't help. Is that a yes or a no?
-
Wait...so any sort of pop is considered "bad" music? None of you can enjoy a good catchy pop song and admit that it's good? Just because it's mainstream?
That's rather sad, if it is the case...
That said, I love these none-bad pop artists...Kelly Clarkson, that *one* Gwen Stefani track, and...uh, that one Starting Line song...
-
Wait...so any sort of pop is considered "bad" music? None of you can enjoy a good catchy pop song and admit that it's good? Just because it's mainstream?
I'd like to just say NO... though there IS a lot of popular music that is easily make-funnable! I could name a bunch of local SF bands that are funny and stupid, but why would it be fun to make fun of them??
PS: To name a pop song by name that I actually like is easy, but at this point it would be kind of like naming an African-American friend to show that I am not a racist. Besides the whole racism thing.
-
I don't like any pop music. Does that make me a bad person? Maybe. There's tons of music I don't like, but I'll give everything a chance once. What I WON'T do is force myself to listen to something over and over until I start to dig it, or w/e. I only make an effort with things I want to. If that makes sense. Which it doesn't.
-
Forgive me father, for I have sinned.
I listened to The Veronicas - 4ever on the radio today in the car, and I sang along to it.
Does that make me a bad man?
-
I love 3 Doors Down.
That's all I have to say.
-
i listen to crap music,
but i figure it doesnt matter what i listen to, as long as it is enjoyable to listen to, and that i dont carry misconceptions to what bands are.
to me, listening to bands like my chemical romance, atreyu, and greenday is like eating ice cream(or fast food, or basically any crappy food), a little bit is okay, but you need some good food in addition.
-
First time post, and I admit to liking Atreyu.
please do not destroy me
-
I think Tsunami Bomb is terribly recorded and played, and their drummer is never on the beat, but I still love listening to it and singing along.
-
The Pop Group...
Post punk stuff, very very bad musically...but still worth a listen if you "get" it. You will either really hate them or you'll not mind them.
I also listen to stuff by Elton John, The Black Eyed Peas and Outkast...but they're quality :-)
-

Well I sure as fuck didn't say that, I love pop.
And I mean good pop.
