Title: Good metal websites?
Post by: psychorhino on 01 Dec 2005, 22:30
I am interested in finding some new heavy metal music, but the websites I traditionally use to find new music (Pitchfork / Tiny Mix Tapes) have underwhelming metal sections, and the only metal websites I have found are kind of crappy.  Does anybody have the names of any good metal websites?

Just use a few good band as starting points and use 'similar artists' and peoples reviews on Amazon. That's how I've found out about 75% of what I listen to which is a lot.

Also good is finding a good label (such as Ipecac and Web Of Mimicry [sp?]) and using their website to find new stuff.

The Metal Archives (http://www.metal-archives.com/)

Lost Souls Domain (http://www.zenial.nl/)

BNR Metal Pages (http://www.bnrmetal.com/)

Satan Stole My Teddybear (http://www.ssmt-reviews.com/db/)

Metal Review (http://www.metalreview.com/)

Metal Rules! (http://www.metal-rules.com/)

Metal Crypt (http://www.metalcrypt.com/)

American Nihilist Underground Society (ANUS) (http://www.anus.com/).

Endless Grief (http://www.endlessgrief.com/)

The Metal Archives is the best for getting a nice neutral spread of opinions, I think. You can search by genre, country, album titles, lyrical themes etc. through a pretty comprehensive register of every metal band ever. Lost Souls Domain is a similiar but less comprehensive service with slightly zippier dicography navigation (imo), and the BNR Metal Pages again offer a similiar service, but with more comprehensive band biographies. Satan Stole My Teddybear has a nice, comprehensive register of all sorts of alternative music reviews of the kind of stuff Pitchfork wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Metal Reviews is a straight metal review site with a slightly odd rating system. Metal Rules, Metal Crypt and ANUS are all decent review and editorial sites, but if you're new to metal take ANUS's editorials and views in particular with a pinch of salt: Anus is run by extremely pretentious black metal nihilists with a hint of nazism about them. Not that they don't say some valid stuff, but they are pretty quirky. They have a neo-classical section, but refuse to review the operatic Therion albums as sell-out, for example. Endless Grief is just a nice little post-script, little subjective descriptions of a great slew of metal bands, with a doom bias, which helps to give you a bit of flavour.

What kind of metal are you looking for anyway?

Also, Digitalmetal (http://www.digitalmetal.com), Aversionline (http://www.aversionline.com) and Lambgoat (http://www.lambgoat.com). Aversionline is in particular a gem. He's stopped reviewing albums for the time being, but most of them are still available for viewing. He does however focus on his mp3 blog now, where he shows off all kinds of new and classic thrash, hardcore, noise and any other genre which is meant to be played loud.

Thanks for the suggestions! To answer KharBevNor's question, I am really unfamilar with the metal scene right now, so I don't know what type of metal I am looking for.

http://www.metalstorm.ee has downloadable metal, some of it is quite good. Most of it is obscure. Surprise your metal friends!

Also, what La Creme said about Amazon works just as well with the All Music Guide (http://www.allmusic.com) with most genres.

Pandora's a bit crap for metal though. It's that 'musical gene' based thing, right? It gives you lots of industrial and nu metal, and its palette is a bit limited.

I have always liked metal but I sorta stopped listening to it for awhile, only to have my interest reawakened by Questionable Content.  I have really enjoyed most of the metal groups Jeph has recommended (Opeth, Isis, Mastodon), but mostly I have been listening to indie rock (Spoon, Modest Mouse, Pixies etc) and rap /hip-hop (Dr. Dre, Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, Madvillian etc).  Throw in some Delta Blues, Bollywood soundtracks, and some J-rock, and you have somebody with a strange range of tastes :-)

Hmn.

Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Amoprhis - Elegy
Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
Ewigkeit - Radio Ixtlan
Samael - Reign of Light
Strapping Young Lad - City
Tiamat - Wildhoney

I've no idea really, but some or all of those should appeal to you.

What is it you like about metal? How up are you with the classics (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Venom, Mercyful Fate etc.)

What do I like about metal?  That is actually a very hard question to answer... I guess always like strong, pulsating music, and heavy metal fits that bill perfectly...As to the classics, I have the basics, and that is all I will lay claim to: Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer etc.

Just a quick note.  Cross Samael - Reign of Light off that list.  By no means at all is it bad; they're one of my favorite bands harkening back to 96 or so, but I don't think it's what you'd be looking for.  If you pick up any Samael, I think Passage would be more in tune to what you'd dig.

How are you with vocals?  Can you tolerate screaming/growling?  That's a big thing for the average music advocate. Far too many people can't/won't get past the vocals to give the actual music a chance.

I merely put Reign of Light as he says he likes rap and I've always thought Reign of Light had a kind of rap vibe, the vocals and so forth. I've not heard Passage, so I'll take your word for it.

I have to say I love this website, their monthly compilations always have some excellent underground goodies.  Unfortunately, I typically get hooked on said goodies, which make my musical tastes extremely hard to shop for...

If you go check out this month's compilation (you need to register with the website to be able to download them), then I'd recommend the songs by Agony, Arafel, Widow, and Miseria.  They're death, black, heavy, and gothic, respectively, and they're all quite good, particularly the song by Widow.
