Enigma
[Psalm 1 'The Blessing']
[The Priest:]
Confess your sins to God, don't be afraid.
Just like me of flesh and blood you're
made. I can heal your wounds and cleanse
your soul, but never return all those
lives you stole.
[The Witch:]
'You can burn in hell'
[The Preacher]
God gives you shelter at heavens shore,
abandon your thoughts to the mighty.
Into the chapel of holyness, live for the
sacred empire, engender the Enigma.
[The Unorthodox]
Sacerdotal majesty, a recreant nonentity?
Do you remember when you said.
[The Priest]
I can heal the dead.
[The Unorthodox]
Paroxysmal ecstacy, dementia or deity?
Sapless you are crawling,
to confess your sins!
[Psalm 2 'Celestial Dissension']
The further side, a confounded lie,
panegyration a reunion of riddles?
The sorrow, the funeral truth,
mentally fraud wih pseudo relics...
Enigma! unholy, ungodly, commander of the regeneration.
Insidious and caught, implored by disgrace.
Inhumation... The burial of man.
Confession... Unify all evil!
Deep inside, the unknown quest,
the sphere is so depressed,
a harp with broken strings,
and the angel's lost her wings,
She plummets, down to the ground...
this mazy world do still exist,
the ghouls arise from the mist!
Renascent through the holy scripture,
submission to what for us is illusion.
From the tenebrous depths of history,
who will divulge the mystery?
Unguiculated, unholy, ungodly,
commander of the regeneration,
insidious and caught,
implored by disgrace,
inhumation... The burial of man,
confession... Unify all evil!
[Psalm 3 'The Loss of Hallowed Life']
Ha, ha, ha, haoow.
This is a bit wanky, but I couldn't chop my list down below 40, only using each band once, and even that was tough. I'll try again later, but I'm not optimistic. I'll make the list smaller:
Abigail - Attack With Spell
Acid Bath - Venus Blue
Agalloch - She Painted Fire Across the Skyline
Amorphis - Black Winter Day
Ancient Rites - (Ode to Ancient) Europa

Tormentor - Elisabeth Bathory
Type O Negative - Black No. 1
Venom - Black Metal
Waylander - Born To The Fight
Wuthering Heights - Land of Olden Glory
Wyrd - Huldrafolk
*This song would have to be an integral component of any objective list, as it absolutely fucking defines HEAVY FUCKING METAL.
-
Slaget vid Blosalv over Skogen Hamnd? :O
That Danzig song kicks whole worlds of ass, though.
-
There's lots of awesome Finntroll songs.
But seriously, Slaget Vid Blodsalv. 1:20 in.
OH FUCKING YES. \m/
-
haha could be huge huh?
does the bold mean it is your fav?
Nah the bold is because it's a 65 minute song :)
-
Since this is going to be ridiculously fucking big if I don't limit it to one song by each band, I will do just that.
off the top of my head:
Deathspell Omega - Carnal Malefactor
Funeral Mist - Circle Of Eyes
Watain - The Limb Crucifix
Xasthur - Soul Abduction Ceremony
Leviathan - Vexed and Vomit Hexed
Judas Iscariot - An Eternal Kingdom of Fire
Sargeist - Returning To Misery & Comfort
Averse Sefira - Battle's Clarion
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var
Weakling - Dead As Dreams
and just for kicks..:
Manowar - The Gods Made Heavy Metal
Dio - The Last In Line
Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell
Mercyful Fate - Come To The Sabbath
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
Slayer - Agressive Perfector
-
There's lots of awesome Finntroll songs.
But seriously, Slaget Vid Blodsalv. 1:20 in.
OH FUCKING YES. \m/
That little organy riff thing where the music stops? Yeah, totally bitchin.
Dio - Holy Diver
Lacuna Coil - Humane
Nile - Masturbating the War God (Fucking insane)
Dimmu - Stormblast (I know, cheesy as hell, and they suck ass now, but it's still pretty bitchin stuff.)
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Metallica - The Call of Ktulu
Impaled Northern Moonforest - Bloodlustfully Praising Satans Unholy Allmightyness In The Woods At Midnight
Stormtroopers of Death - United Forces
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark. Seriously, that song makes me want to kick some ass.
Motorhead - Nothing Up My Sleeves
Off the top of my head; When I get home I'll probably add more.
-
Why has anyone not mentioned Hallowed Be Thy Name yet?
-
I don't even want to try and begin to pick favorites. I hate to think how much time and space it would take me...
I think my all time favorite metal song might be Virgin Black: Our Wings Burning
I don't know why, except for the solo at the end its fairly simple, and its piano and vocals only for the first half of the song, but something about it just grabs me everytime I listen to it.
-
Why has anyone not mentioned Hallowed Be Thy Name yet?
Because we've all only allowed ourselves one Maiden song.
The choice is just a reflection of our tastes. There's several Maiden songs (Fear of the Dark, Aces High, The Trooper, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Phantom of the Opera, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Number of the Beast and maybe The Wicker Man) that could easily make the list.
-
I was half-joking. Half, because the live version of Hallowed Be Thy Name from Live After Death may be my favorite fucking song ever.
Additionally:
Megadeth: Holy Wars/The Punishment Due
Iron Maiden: Aces High (because I really can't limit myself to one Maiden song)
Iced Earth: Stand Alone
Testament: Disciples of the Watch
Black Sabbath: Neon Knights
Dio: Holy Diver
Helloween: Eagle Fly Free
Judas Priest: The Hellion/Electric Eye
Liquid Tension Experiment: Acid Rain (I figure Khar is counting it as metal)
Motorhead: Ace of Spades (stereotypical, I know)
Exodus: Bonded by Blood
-
Slayer - Raining Blood
Motörhead - Overkill
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Nothing surprising or obscure, but kickass is kickass, popular or not. Those have been my favorite heavy metal songs for years now. "Raining Blood" or "Overkill" is number 1 depending on my mood.
Others perpetual favorites:
Suffocation - Infecting the Crypts
Carcass - Corporal Jigsore Quandary
Napalm Death - Breed to Breathe
Judas Priest - All Guns Blazing*
Nile - Ramses Bringer of War
Danzig - Devil's Plaything
Mastodon - Megalodon
S.O.D. - Milk
D.R.I. - Violent Pacification (that's probably more hardcore punk I guess)
Morbid Angel - Maze of Torment
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Additional shit that would go on a current mixtape:
Corrosion of Conformity - Paranoid Opioid
Atheist - Enthralled in Essence or On They Slay
Gorefest - State of Mind or Infamous Existence
Vader - Cold Demons
Cynic - How Could I
Bolt Thrower - Cenotaph
A more honest list would go on for pages. This is not nearly as krieg as some others mentioned.
*Khar, you are the only other person I've ever heard say "All Guns Blazing" is Priest's best song. I fuckin' love it. That was the only disappointing thing about seeing them live, no "Guns", but I guess I didn't really expect to hear it anyway.
-
Black Sabbath - Into the Void
Tony Iommi (feat. Serj Tankian) - Patterns
Sleep - Jerusalem (Dopesmoker)
Rammstein - Engel (hey, it's a good song)
Masters of Reality - Kill The King
Grand Magus - Ulvaskall (Vargr)
That said, most of you are waaaaay more metal than me.
-
Into the Void is a great song; Really fun to actually play on the geetar.
-
Monster Magnet do a badass cover of Into The Void \m/
-
Monster Magnet, huh? Any relation to Zappa and his 14 minute "The Return of the Son of the Monster Magnet"? Or is that just a term that I've never heard of?
-
Kai, you have just inspired me to form a band called Megaphone of Destiny.
-
Anything ever by the band Arsis.
-
Kai, you have just inspired me to form a band called Megaphone of Destiny.
Bitchin, but how did I inspire this?
-
I like Black Metal by Cradle of Filth. Come on, how can you NOT like monkeyscreaming British guys?
-
...No, actually, I'm just going to wait for Signum to come back here and chew you the hell out.
-
I like Black Metal by Cradle of Filth. Come on, how can you NOT like monkeyscreaming British guys?
That's probably the best song they ever wrote!!!
Have you heard their song Hallowed Be Thy Name!?? That one is awesome too, they write such awesome guitar riffs! Same with their song Sodomy and Lust!
-
I personally enjoy those melodies on No Time To Cry. Great stuff. And if you're talking about their riffing, how could you not mention Death Comes Ripping? That song slays!!!
-
I want to hunt down Danny Filth and beat him to death with a black rubber dildo.
His voice makes my ears bleed.
-
opeth - serenity painted death.
bloodbath - buried by the dead.
the agony scene - habeas corpus.
..are the first three that come to mind.
but there are so many others that make me think..
'thats one fuck of a choon'.
-
I don't have my full music collection at hand since my hard drive crashed, buuut...
I'll have to agree with khar on Burzum - War
here's a mini-list off the top o' me head:
Mithotyn - Hail Me
Absu - The Stone of Destiny (meeean drums in this one)
Mayhem - Deathcrush (I'm not counting any version of Deathcrush recorded by the mayhem crew. They make good songs, but they can't seem to record them well. prz refer to either the Absu, Immortal Ayatollah or Opthalamia versions)
Windir - Arntor, Ein Windir
-
Hi Im new! Anyway I can't believe no one has mentioned Mudvayne yet.
One of the best songs has to be Forget to Remember.
Also Cradle of Filth's Nymphetamine Fix is a good one as well.
-
....Yeah. uhh...Mudvayne is metal now? Since like, fucking when?
-
Iron Maiden: Die With Your Boots On.
Seriously, that song is godly.
-
awesome feedback, i took the liberty of listening to some of the songs that yall posted on here, awesome, simply awesome
-
Absu - The Stone of Destiny (meeean drums in this one)
Anything by Absu is fucking incredible, especially off of Tara. Proscriptor is such a bad ass vocalist, and he goes vocals and drums at the same time live also. he's also totally batshit insane.
-
Iron Maiden: Die With Your Boots On.
Seriously, that song is godly.
The live version from Live After Death is even better. In fact, just about everything from Piece of Mind was sped up in a good way on that album.
-
Absu - The Stone of Destiny (meeean drums in this one)
Anything by Absu is fucking incredible, especially off of Tara. Proscriptor is such a bad ass vocalist, and he goes vocals and drums at the same time live also. he's also totally batshit insane.
DUDE MUST HAVE LUNGS LIKE EIGHTEEN BAGPIPES D=
-
Many Metallica songs
Slayer - Expendable Youth & War Ensemble.
-
Absu - The Stone of Destiny (meeean drums in this one)

My roomate talked to Proscriptor. I heard the tape. Seems like a pretty nice, normal guy, despite the fact that he's a fucking demon behind the kit and in a black metal band.

Oh shit, Absu just came on my playlist. Manannan. Rock on.
-
black sabbath - iron man
the red chord - that certain special ugly
the black dahlia murder - a vulgar picture
king diamond - abigale
kronos - colossal titan strife
cannibal corpse - a skull full of maggots
cattle decapitation - humanure
dragonforce - through the fire and flames
fuck... im dead - colon commando
nile - unas slayer of the gods
send more paramedics - burning the body
between the buried and me - lost perfection a) coulrophob
carcass - heartwork
.. there's alot more, but these are my favourites at the moment
-
UUUUUUUNASSSSS. . .THE SLAYER OF THE GODSSSSSSSSS
God damn that song kicks my ass
-
Too tired to think. Random songs:
Meshuggah - I
Opeth - Black Rose Immortal
Emperor - Tongue of Fire
Pain of Salvation (not really metal, but god damn are they good) - Iter Impius
Isis - So Did We
Arcturus - Star-Crossed, Ad Astra (god like songs)
Light of Day, Day of Darkness is too fucking long. I don't care how progressive, musical or awesome it is, an hour is totally stretching it. I can tolerate Dream Theater wanking for 20 minutes, but some Emperor reject guy playing for an hour is too much.
-
I have a weakness for Korn.
Slipknot - Wait and Bleed
Kittie - Paperdoll
" - Brackish
I don't even know anymore. Much hard rock, metal, nü-metal, acid rock, and whatever. It all blends together to form my old goth days.
-
Get those songs out of this thread! This is the GOOD metal songs.
-
Get those songs out of this thread! This is the GOOD metal songs.
neither slipknot or korn even fall under the metal catagory :]
-
Bathory - Gods of Thunder, Of Wind and Of Rain
The whole Blood on Ice album is their finest work, in my opinion.
-
There's no 'they' about it, tbh. Blood on Ice is pretty much solo Quorthon, apart from the drumming. And yes, it is pretty much definitive of Viking Metal. There is a real sense in which a lot of bands strive to be Blood on Ice. My personal favourite song off it is 'The Sword': Those anvil beats at the beginning! AWESOME! However, Bathory's best song is still, and will always in my mind be, 'One Rode to Asa Bay'. Apart from the fact that it should be held up as the text-book example of how to be both very melodic and FUCKING HEAVY at the same time, it's also absolutely epic. It's the first thing that I listened to when I heard that Quorthon had died, and let me tell you, fists were clenched over hearts and tears were misting in eyes.
Fucking viking.
-
Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time
pure nekrogrim up in haar.
-
My favourite Immortal song was always Damned in Black.
But then, choosing your favourite Immortal track is like choosing your best orgasm.
-
Withstand The Fall of Time has some great riffs in it.. In fact that whole album (At The Heart of Winter) has great riffing..
I'll admit right now though that Immortal were never near the top of my favorite band list. . They're decent, but nothing orgasm worthy. :P
-
I wasn't comparing them to an orgasm, just saying that they are a band who I find to be of a consistent, high quality. I mean, seriously, they're so over the top that you can hardly not love 'em. The videos, the armour, the lyrics...It's just brilliance.
-
... Nnnnnno, you compared them to an orgasm. That's precisely literally what you did.
-
... Nnnnooo, I compared the ACT OF CHOOSING A FAVOURITE IMMORTAL SONG to the ACT OF CHOOSING A FAVOURITE ORGASM. Neither Immortal themselves nor even orgasms themselves are involved anywhere in this comparison, merely the act of choosing them.
-
Well, sorry about the mixup. . either way, I dunno. I wouldn't say everything they've done has been consistently good. . You can't really compare Pure Holocaust with Sons of Northern Darkness (which is just sort of bland to me, although some songs on it are catchy)
anyways, enough nitpicking..
-
Well, I tried, but in that case, no, I don't believe there is a single good metal song out there.
XP
-
how dare you sir?
-
Well, I tried, but in that case, no, I don't believe there is a single good metal song out there.
XP
you my friend, must be a very confused person :]
-
Aye aye.
as cheesy as it is, I can't help but love Demons and Wizards' Crimson King. Such a badass song.
-
Equilibrium - Wingthor's Hammer
Wintersun (the whole self-titled album is great.)
-
Finntroll - Slaget vid Blodsälv
Wins the thread.
Other contenders:
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
Guns 'N Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
Black Sabbath - A crapload
-
I think Sabbath's Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener wins, but that's assuming that there's anybody who actually listened to Black Sabbath Vol. 4.
-
MUGA!!!
-
I think Sabbath's Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener wins, but that's assuming that there's anybody who actually listened to Black Sabbath Vol. 4.
I listen to that album more than any other by the mighty Sabbath. "Under the Sun/Every Day Comes and Goes" gets my vote for best song on the album.
-
I still stand by my opinion that the best Sabbath track* is 'Children of the Grave'. Everybody and their grandmother has ripped off that track, and not done anything as good**.
*At least with Ozzy. Heaven and Hell!
**Though some pretty similiar ideas turn up in Immortal's 'Damned in Black', and that track is awesome.
-
*At least with Ozzy. Heaven and Hell!
I agree so fucking hard that I cannot even express it in words. Neon Knights, bitches!
