Hey y'all,
Seeing the news yesterday that Depeche Mode was slated to headline the first night of the 2006 Coachella Valley Music Festival is bringing back memories of Coachellas past, and with them the rampant speculations on who would play the festival this year. No matter who ends up on the lineup, it seems there are always a few types you can count on showing up: one or two Returns From Hiatus / Crazy Fantasy Reunions (Kraftwerk, Pixies, New Order, Gang of Four, Bauhaus, Iggy & The Stooges), a few (for better or for worse) Established Legends (Radiohead, Weezer, Coldplay), some (for better or for worse) Rising Stars (Keane, the Faint, the Arcade Fire), some Big Breaks (Dresden Dolls, Polyphonic Spree), and the Stuff Hipsters Flock To During Radiohead(Matmos, Wolf Eyes, Q and Not U, Erase Errata, Mogwai). Don't forget that some great music comes from the DJ tent!
So here's my question: you've got a stage, a fuckload of ticketholders, unlimited resources, and your pick of groups. Who would be in your two-day fantasy Coachella line-up, and who would headline?? Pick twelve bands a day for your ten hours of musical edification (Coachella has four or five stages/tents, but we'll assume you're jumping around during the day). One limitation: I'm going to stick to bands that I think can help sell out a 50,000-ticket-a-day event; as much as I'd like to see Os Mutantes and Fennesz headline, I don't really think it'll sell too many tickets. I'm also trying to be reasonable about the lower-tier groups, but I honestly couldn't care if Paul McCartney opened the festival. I'll probably be in the little tent watching Montag though.
I think my lineup would be as such (headliners in BOLD):
Day 1:
DAVID BOWIE
Daft Punk
Sonic Youth
My Bloody Valentine (sundown show!)
XTC
Boredoms
M83
Animal Collective
Lightning Bolt
Out Hud
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
Montag
Day 2:
DAVID BYRNE
Kanye West
Wilco
Yellow Magic Orchestra (Late show in the DJ tent, no less)
The Arcade Fire
Aphex Twin
Antony & The Johnsons
Tortoise
Caribou

-
You do realise that Pixies, New Order, Gang of Four, Iggy and the Stooges and Kraftwerk are all currently playing gigs, making albums, have albums out or more than one of the above?
BTW, saying you like Coldply is gonna get you raped on here. >_>
Oh, and here's mine, headliner in bold:

Radiohead
Joy Division/New Order
Weezer
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Wilco

Rage Against The Machine
The Mad Capsule Markets

1) The bands you mentioned all came out of periods of inactivity (in some cases, major hiatuses of multiple years) to play tours that each included (and in some cases, began with) a performance at the Coachella music festival. I agree that they are all indeed active well after their respective Coachella stints.
2) I hate Coldplay, but they (for better or for worse) fit into the category I mentioned and actually headlined the first day (which I did not attend) of the festival last year. Can't win 'em all.
-
Dara, I find it interesting (no less awesome) that you chose the Pillows to headline. I actually have this rather disquieting urge to see B'z live, but they would be overrun and murdered by the other performers at Japanochella. Yasuko O. would stab them with her cellphone antenna.
-
Yeah, I figured Pillows would have some stiff (not to mention batshit insane) competition, but in some small way, they embody rock n' roll (that's just my personal opinion, of course), while still being extremely accessible.
-
Day 1:

Subway to Sally

Fuck selling tickets to hipsters. I'll just stand there on my own crying softly in pure joy and singing along. If anyone wanted to come and get totally blown away of course, up to them.
Oh Jesus, just the thought of seeing Skyclad live, headlinging a festival, with a Walkyier/Biddle/Ramsey/Ridley/English/Graham lineup, makes me sad that it will never be.
-
as much as I'd like to see Os Mutantes and Fennesz headline, I don't really think it'll sell too many tickets.
That's why you put your dream lineup on one stage and a bunch of big sellers you don't care about on the other stage. That way you can get up by the stage and stay there all day. (Bathroom breaks are for the weak.)
EDIT: Oh wait Coachella is one of the ones that only has one stage, right?
P.S. Huge call on an Os Mutantes headlining show. :P

So who knows
-
...THat brings up a question. Would Prince get along with Minor Threat?
-
What is this Coachella? Why is it so perfect?
No fair.
-
pssst! It's not!
-
but the lineup sounds so good...
-
Depends on the year and what you're looking for. I always find that the speculation of who's going to play at a two-day, 90 act festival generates more interesting lineups than the actual Coachella acts themselves.
Having said that, I had a great time in 2004, though only a passable time in 2005 when I only went to the second day.
-
Let's pretend some of these bands who don't normally play live will play live because Satan commandeth them to.
Day One -- Oldschool
Mercyful Fate
Venom
Morbid Angel
Slayer (80s stuff ONLY, or they will be shot)
Sodom
Sarcofago
Morbid Saint
Possessed
Celtic Frost/Hellhammer
Day Two -- Not so oldschool
Deathspell Omega (this could possible be a show + ritual)
Watain
Averse Sefira
Mütiilation
Demoncy
Funeral Mist
Antaeus
Ondskapt
Ofermod
Xasthur
Weakling
-
Day one
Scissor Sisters

Day six
Greenday

Those are just the main headlining stages, there will be smaller stages featuring ministry of sound dj's and even local bands, friends bands and other random cool bands ive forgotten to mention
Edit: oh BTW i frogot to mention that im australian and hence in a time warp so that my festival may seem like two days but the ahhh time warp makes it a week *nods head* you know its true
-
Boris & Merzbow
wheeeee, have you heard the new split? <3
-
Slayer (80s stuff ONLY, or they will be shot)
To be honest, just build a time machine and bring the band in from 1988. They're getting too old to rock.
-
normz: I want to go to your festival.
-
Day 1:
SKYCLAD (having made up with Martin Walkyier and Jay Graham)
Edge of Sanity

MDB FOR THE WIN
Add Throbbing Gristle, Front 242, pre-Fragile NIN, pre-Symbols KMFDM (Symbols is a great album, but their early 90's Wax Trax days were the best), Coil (with Jhonn Balance resurrected), and Boyd Rice, and you've got yourself one of the most incredible line-ups ever.
edit: also Ministry from the Filth-Pig-and-earlier days, and Skinny Puppy but without all the DAT tapes
-
Coil (with Jhonn Balance resurrected)
Brains would be eaten.
-
Boris & Merzbow
wheeeee, have you heard the new split? <3
tbh the only thing I've heard is Sun Baked Snow Cave
but I fell utterly in love with it
-
normz: I want to go to your festival.
I really don't...
Well, apart from Daft Punk.
I'd probably spend the whole day shouting "WHEN IS IT DAFT PUNK TIME ????"
