My list is up. Click here.
-
Haven't heard a single one :(
-
Not even the Opeth, Khar?
I haven't heard most of anything on it, aside from that Opeth album. It's alright.
-
I guess it's bad that the only one I know is The Decemberists.
Great band, though.
-
Not even the Opeth, Khar?
Nope. Haven't got round to it. I don't really have the enthusiasm for Opeth I once did. I'll probably pick it up with my christmas cash.
-
I actually rather like Pelican. I'm not nearly indie enough to know of any of the others except Opeth.
And I'm actively resisting the temptation to point out that every prog guitar nerd should know and love Dream Theater, because that's what everybody's expecting me to say, dammit.
-
Dream Theater are unlistenable.
-
Ouch. My soul.
-
Most of the stuff on there falls into the "I really wanted to check it out, but couldn't find it for the life of me" category. Hey Jeph, can you hook me up with some Clor or Vitalic, maybe ;)?
Also: For people that like awesome guitar goodness but hate Dream Theater for lyrical content: Liquid Tension Experiment. I need to find a cd one of these days =P. Too bad that side project is over with.
-
Soulseek?
-
I've heard the Sigur Rós, Hold Steady, Decemberists, Spoon, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Broken Social Scene, Animal Collective, Wolf Parade, and Sufjan Stevens, and all I really disagree with is the Animal Collective. I thought it was boring. "Did You Hear the Words" and "Banshee Beat" are great songs but the rest I could do without really. Also I think the Hold Steady and Spoon should switch places. I just didn't think Gimme Fiction was quite that wonderful. Separation Sunday, on the other hand, took all of the potential from songs like "Knuckles" from Almost Killed Me and turned it into a really great album.
-
The hold Steady basically own my life.
-
I actually rather like Pelican. I'm not nearly indie enough to know of any of the others except Opeth.
I actually bought a single of there's, simply because it had a full 20 minute track which guarentees nerdgasm. It's pretty bitchin. MARCH INTO THE SEA, GUYS
-
The only album on that list that I disagree with is Bell Orchestre. I just can't get into them, I find them bland like vanilla ice cream.
-
There's some solid stuff on the list, but for future reference, it's "Siriustar" not "Seriustar". Okay, sorry.
-
solid list m8
-
Pelican, Opeth, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, Broken Social Scene I have all heard.
Illinoise is great, Ghost Reveries is immense, Takk was awesome, the others I am up and down on. Broken Social Scene I dislike. It's just not well constructed music IMO.
-
The stuff I've heard off that list is pretty good. Takk... was good, though not close to being as awesome as Agaetis Byrjun. I'm hopefully getting Von for Christmas, any thoughts?
Oh and The Mariners Revenge song kicks ass.
-
I'm pretty cool with that list, I haven't heard it ALL like the metalish stuff. I'm just not ready to make that leap yet. Though my list is quite similar. I think Hold Steady should be higher, but than again Hold Steady should be higher on all lists no matter how high it is.
-
Am I the only person this year who was underwhelmed by Picaresque? It had some fine songs on it, but a great album for me is one that not only has good songs, but which unites them into a cohesive whole. Picaresque didn't do that for me - unlike Castaways and Cut-outs.
(Yes, I know, comparing band's latest release to band's debut album - bad Harry! Naughty!)
-
That Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album makes me hot in the pants. Really glad I gave it a second shot.
I just can't for the life of me get into the Decemberists or Surjan Stevens though.
-
Huh? Buh? Wha?
For once I agree with Khar musically.
-
Where is The Go! Team?
-
It's on last year's list. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/top10.php)
-
Wow. I had listened to 9 out of 10 last year. This year it's 1 out of 20. I'm lagging behind.
I was kinda expecting EElS Blinking Lights and Other Revelations on there, but probably only because I'm a huge EElS fanboy and it's my favourite album of the year so that's okay.
-
Say what? Isn't that a 2005 album?
-
clor's album is so awesome
they rock live too so if anyone gets a chance to go to a clor show, sell your soul for a ticket
-
Say what? Isn't that a 2005 album?
Released in the UK in 2004, not imported to the US till 2005 thanks to rights issues with the samples.
-
Nice to see a vast range of musical styles on there. I am at 9/20 compared to last years 6/10 though.....I have been slacking
-
14/20.
Numbers
20.19.14.13.12.10.9.8.6.5.4.3.2.1.
-
I've heard 5 of the 20, and loved all of those, and I've been meaning to grab about 10 of the others before this list came out. Personally I would have given Wolf Parade the number one, but that's just me (I really, really love that album).
-
No Modern Life is War? Paint it Black?
-
Edan, Roots Manuva and the DangerDoom project all got released this year, all of which were quite good in their own rights. Add to that the re-release of the latest Dalek to a broader spectrum and it was a damn good year for hip-hop. I'm surprised not to see any of these (or any other, for that matter) on your list.
But to each his own.
-
No Twin Cinema? That was my personal number one of the year - not even a mention. :(
-
you fuckin own Jeph, Opeth is on the list! I can't get enough of this band, they seem to do no wrong!
-
Let's see...
20. Isolee: Got this recently and am listening to it at the moment. So far, so good.
19. Pelican: Heard of, but haven't listened to. [Edit: No wait, they're metal, and I haven't heard of them. Stupid animal name bands. Nurr.]
18. Opeth: Too much of a pansy for metal :P
17. Yob: Never heard of.
16. Poker Flat. Never heard of.
15. The Juan MacLean: Never heard of.
14. Sigur Ros: Yes, please.
13. Serena Maneesh: Never heard of.
12. The Hold Steady: Never heard of.
11. Bell Orchestre: Never heard of.
10. The Decemberists: Definitely. Damn that crazy-ass (almost literally, if you consider his voice) Colin Meloy and "The Mariner's Revenge Song." The rest of the album was excellent too, though, so I would probably rank this higher than 10, but that's just me.
9. Spoon: Mm-mm good. Hey, am I the only who has an inexplicable urge to just strut about the house when listening to this album? Or turn my camera on?
8. Vitalic: Never heard of.
7. Clor: Never heard of.
6. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: Good, but it would probably be lower on my list.
5. Broken Social Scene: Been trying to get my hands on it.
4. Deerhoof: Got this recently and am listening to it at the moment.
3. Animal Collective: Been trying to get my hands on it.
2. Wolf Parade: Personally, I would bump this up to number 1 (even though I like Sufjan). It was just that good.
1. Sufjan Stevens: See number 2.
That wasn't so bad. I got about half. [Checks to see if penis is intact.] Damnit, I only have half a wang now. Grr. I mean, nurr.
-
Dream Theater are unlistenable.
It's true, that's why Liquid Tension Experiment happened. And they still did fucking "Hourglass". GAY.
I can't really do 20, but the 5 I've loved the most this year are:
Eels - Blinking Lights & Other Revelations
The Sugarplastic - Will
General Patton VS. The X-ecutioners - Joint Special Operations Task Force
The Bad Plus - Suspicious Activity?
Fantomas - Suspended Animation
Pretty much in that order.
-
I've been downloading some shit I've missed and now I have a definite top 10:
http://mirkgard.blogspot.com/2005/12/top-10-of-2005.html
-
Jeph's number one is my number one :)
-
Khar you reprobate, give me Scum.
I totally disagree with Jeph's list but... I don't like indie so I probably have no right to comment. For me there have only been 7 albums worthy of mention this year;
Baitercell and Shumaker-The Wall Of Bass Technique
Excellent beats with NZ's premier hip hop artists doing guest vocals. Not all that hiphop when you actually listen to it.
The Chemical Brothers-Push The Button
Not their best but better than most of the garbage released this year.
Comeback Kid-Wake The Dead
Best hardcore that isn't Ramallah.
The Mercy Cage-Scree:Transmissions
I can't get enough of the NZ underground. This band fucking kills it.
NIN-With Teeth
Much more accesable than a few of their previous albums. I liked it. A Lot.
Queens of The Stoneage-Lullabies to Paralyse
Not as good as their previous album but still better than most.
Ramallah-Kill A Celebrity
This band kills it. Everything. They own your face. Talented, brutal and unafraid to confront the issues facing modern society. If you're into heavy music then get this album.
EDIT:Cancel that Khar, found their website. Leeching tracks right now.
-
Shit, Creme, was Suspended Animation released this year? For some odd reason I thought it was a 2004 thing. Now I have to revise my lists.
-
I really haven't been keeping up with new releases this year. And for the most part the stuff I did keep up with sucked. (Fuck you Soad).
However Ghost Reveries, Takk... and Suspended Animation all kick vast amounts of ass.
-
Vitalic > Isolee > Poker Flats Vol 4 > *. Some of the Indie stuff is pretty good if I'm feeling a bit boring. Never heard of Yob, The Juan MacLean, The Hold Steady or Clor. Had this been some sort of competition, I guess I would have done OK.
-
That's why Liquid Tension Experiment happened.
Actually, the John Petrucci solo album Suspended Animation was released earlier this year, and it's about as close to a third LTE album as we're ever going to get (Portnoy has already said that there will be no reunion). There's no Rudess keyboard madness on it, but Portnoy does all the drumming and LaRue is pretty much on par with Levin in terms of bassage.
-
Never heard of Yob, The Juan MacLean, The Hold Steady or Clor. Had this been some sort of competition, I guess I would have done OK.
That you've never heard of The Juan Maclean surprises me a bit. Personally, I think that the Juan Maclean debut blew LCD Soundsystem's out of the water, particularly since he didn't succumb to the generic DFA sound.
Oh and this was a competition, didn't you know? You take your list and score it against the one recently posted at Pitchfork, to see how truly "indie" you are. Bonus points if you score someone that Pitchfork wouldn't dream of even on an all night pabst bender. Supermega bonus points if your number one matches theirs, because you're just that cool.
:P
-
On that list I have heard Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens. If I were to rank them(all these lists are pointless if you ask me but) then it's Picaresque first and Illinoise second. Why? Because Illinoise was too long, not a bad track per sé but a couple of interludes and weaker songs that weren't strictly necessary. It seems this is a curse of some bands, they are too talented and enthusiastic for their own good. They want to share so much that it ends up being too much. Other examples of this is Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf, Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk and others. Don't get me wrong, Illinoise is a good and engaging record but it is also an exhausting listen in my opinion.
-
Songs for the Deaf was too long? It wasn't even sixty minutes though.
-
Is it really such a great year when you have such serious reservations about your number one choice?
-
Songs for the Deaf was too long? It wasn't even sixty minutes though.
In my opinion - yes. I admit it is a sprawling near-masterpiece, but it could have been even better if they left out some of the weaker cuts. And of course let A Song for the Deaf be the ending song.
-
I've been downloading some shit I've missed and now I have a definite top 10:
http://mirkgard.blogspot.com/2005/12/top-10-of-2005.html
I'm quite surprised that you name-dropped :W: in the VNV Nation review but Evoke didn't get a mention :P
-

Personally, I think that an hour-long loop of a petulant child throwing up into a tuba would blow LCD Soundsystem's debut out of the water. I'll give this Juan Maclean nonsense a listen though.
