This is pretty simple: talk about your fantasy bands. Any musicians, live or dead, that you could shove together and have make music.
I came up with this idea when I formed in my own little world a group filled with my favorite thrash metal musicians.
Vocals: David White (Heathen)
Lead Guitar: Alex Skolnick (Testament)
Rhythm Guitar: Jon Schaeffer (Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards)
Bass Guitar: Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Iced Earth, Death)
Drums: Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, Testament, Strapping Young Lad)
Considering the journeyman nature of several of these guys, this one wouldn't actually be too much of a longshot if A) Heathen were still together, and B) Skolnick hadn't left Testament for his jazz career (which, by the way, is totally awesome). Basically, I started with the Skolnick-Schaeffer tandem, because I don't feel Iced Earth really ever had a great lead guitarist, and I thought of how kickass it would be if they teamed up. From there, I sort of just filled out the rhythm section (both of whom were in Death because of Death's nature to just hire the best available musicians for one or two albums), and then picked the least shitty thrash vocalist I could think of (the guy from Sodom is pretty good, but I don't think he would work well with these guys at all).
So... yeah. Go!

I totally wanted to form a supergroup of freaks. Some of them are dead. Others wear masks. Multiple members will be sharing roles, because having both of them go at the same time would be so awesome it gives me cancer.
Vocals: Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, 80,000 side projects), Frank Zappa, that guy who sings in the Residents (since, you know, nobody knows completely WHO THE FUCK THEY ARE. I have ideas though.),Captain Beefheart/Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) and Tom Waits.
Lead Guitar: Buckethead (Buckethead,80,000 side projects)
Rhythm Guitar:Frank Zappa
Bass Guitar: Les Claypool (Primus, 80,000 more side projects)
Drums: John French (Captain Beefheart). Seriously, can you imagine playing drums to Beefheart? I mean, you have to be fucking good; Beefheart wrote his drum scores by trying to recreate the sounds of him washing the dishes. Honestly.
They're a bunch of freaks; Although I really do like the idea of having 5 vocalists. Write vocals for all five of them and have them sing them at the same time.
-
Vocals: Don Henley, Glenn Frey
Guitars: Jimmy Page, Sir Eric Clapton
Drums: Me, but only because John Bonham is dead and Ginger Baker SUCKS nowadays. And 'cause I wanna play with Pagey :B
Bass: Jack Bruce or Flea
Keyboards: John Paul Jones
-
Freddie Mercury: vocals, piano
David Gilmour: vocals, guitars
Omar Whatsisname from Mars Volta: guitars
Paul McCartney: vocals, bass, piano
Matt Tong: drums, vocals
-
Broken Social Scene.
-
Er... I don't think the idea was to post your favourite band and say they're perfect...
-
They're not my favourite band. They are just my idea of a fucking good supergroup.
Ok, I'll change it,
Broken Social Scene + Me (guitar, bass)
-
They already have like 47 guitarists. I'm sure they'd find room for one more though :)
-
The Traveling Wilburys.
Seriously.
-
Er... I don't think the idea was to post your favourite band and say they're perfect...
Exactly, I was going to put that in the thread description, but I figured some people would post that then just to spite me. Despite that, you know, it's missing the whole point of the thread.

i call this group "amphibious assault" after nimoy's ridiculous and magnificent song of the same name
vocals: leonard nimoy
dancer/backup vox: william shatner
bass/beats: amon tobin
-
Vocals: Mike Patton, Devin Townsend, Loreena McKennitt
Guitars: Devin Townsend, Jeff Loomis
Bass: Les Claypool
Keyboards: Warmen
Drums: Dave Grohl
Production: Devin Townsend/Steve Wilson
Additional Performers: The Weens, Garm, Cornelius, Mirai
-
My band's name is Kneel Before Zod and plays classic British hard rock.
vox: Space Ghost
guitar: Bucky O'Hare
keys: girl-type Ranma
bass: Captain Murphy
drums: JFK from "Clone High"
-
Vocals: Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Guitar: Jimi Hendrix
Guitar: Eric Clapton (Cream - era)
Bass: Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)
Drums: John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Man I'd pay to see that. Though tickets would be at a premium due to the costs of ressurecting two of the members.
-
Lead Vocals: Mike Patton
Backing Vocals : Matthew Bellamy (Muse)
Guitars : Matthew Bellamy and Duane Denison (Tomahawk and The Jesus Lizard)
Bass : Kevin Rutmanis (Melvins and Tomahawk)
Drums : Dave Lombardo (Slayer and Fantomas)
Keys : Matthew Bellamy
Sax : John Zorn (Quite impressive list of stuff, including playing Pratzo Orchestra, a Mike Patton solo album)
I wonder what sort of music they would make...
-
Vocals - Geddy Lee
Bass - Me, after several months of very intense training
Guitar - Alex Lifeson
Drums - Neil Peart
fuck yeah
-
Excuse me? Did you just relieve Geddy Lee of his bass duties just so you could play? NO. YOU ARE WRONG
-
If Geddy Lee were to be moved, it would be out of vocals, NOT bass.
-
guitar - the two guys from dragonforce
bass - les claypool
drums - flo mounier(cryptopsy)
vocals - billie joe armstrong(just for fun), and the two blood brothers vocalists.
now that would be a supergroup.
-
and then picked the least shitty thrash vocalist I could think of
Which should have been Martin 'Shakespeare on speed' Walkyier in his Sabbat/Really old Skyclad mode.
Folk You!
Lead vocals/lyricist: Martin Walkyier (Sabbat/Return to the Sabbat, Skyclad, The Clan Destined)
Backing vocals and Jolks: Jonne (Korpiklaani)
Female vocals and bodhran: Candia Ridley (Inkubus Sukkubus)
Lead guitar 1: Henrik Flyman (Wuthering Heights, Evil Masquerade, ZooL, Moahni Moahna)
Lead Guitar 2: Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Blackmore's Night, others)
Bass: Tundra (Finntroll)
Fiddle and keys: Georgina Biddle (Skyclad)
Trad. Drums: Ali (Former Korpiklaani)
It'd blow Folkearth out the fucking water. The strings section could slice a man in twain at thirty paces.
I've got more ideas I could go for on top of this, of course.
-
Khar, how could you forget Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow? Blackmore + Dio = fuck yeah!
-
Excuse me? Did you just relieve Geddy Lee of his bass duties just so you could play? NO. YOU ARE WRONG
You're right. Blame the alcohol. Here's my new, improved super group.
Vocals, bass - Geddy Lee
Guitar - Alex Lifeson
Drums - Neil Peart
Pointless on-stage postering & ass-lickery - Me.
-
Khar, how could you forget Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow? Blackmore + Dio = fuck yeah!
I said 'others'. I thought he might be in Rainbow, but damn, who wasn't?
-
also i'd like a Cynthia Harrell vs. Carla White "Can't Say Goodbye 2 Snake Eater" Remix
-
The ultimate main-stream rock band:
Vocals: Amy Lee (Evanescence)
Guitar: Saul 'Slash' Hudson (Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver)
Guitar: Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave)
Bass: Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Drums: Dave Grohl (Nirvana, The Foo Fighters)
Oh my god what have I done.
Honourable Mention:
Guitar: 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott (Pantera, Damageplan)
He's honourable mention since he's dead and all...
-
best electronic band ever
Vocals: Eric Oehler (Null Device)
Vocals: Syrah (Qntal)
Synths/programming: Stev (Mind.In.A.Box)
Keyboards: Joakim (Covenant)
Drums: Mark Jackson (VNV Nation)
-
Okay, I want Broken Social Scene's bassist(s?), Curtis Mayfield's horn section, Jeff Mangum on Irish bagpipe, Sigur Rós's xylophonist, Stars' keyboardist, Jens Lekman on ukelele, the keytarist from 2 Skinnee Js, all of Animal Collective on percussion ONLY, Architecture in Helsinki's synth, Braid's drummer, Kevin Shields, Carrie Brownstein, and Brian Wilson on guitar.
vocals: Sam Cooke, Nico, Ted Leo, Kelli Ali, Ben Gibbard, Jenny Lewis, Hope Sandoval, and anybody else in the band that wants to chime in. Especially Jens Lekman and Jeff Mangum.
Production duties shared by Chris Walla and Dave Newfeld. Ted Leo can join in on guitar too if they say it's okay.
I should probably get some strings in there but I don't really know who's good, and I don't want to be like "UHHHHH ANDREW BIRD OR FINAL FANTASY ON VIOLIN."
-
haha i think lastclearchance just won the thread
-
No way. You totally took this thing out a dozen or so posts ago:
i call this group "amphibious assault" after nimoy's ridiculous and magnificent song of the same name
vocals: leonard nimoy
dancer/backup vox: william shatner
bass/beats: amon tobin
My brain thinks this would be awesome to listen to.
-
Shatner on backup vocals wins in itself.
-
The Traveling Wilburys.
Seriously.
No joke, it's pretty much perfect.
-
I'm suprised nobody has referenced the 'Stephen Malkmus+ Thurston Moore+J Mascis' band yet.
Oh, wait. There it is.
But you can't have Thurston Moore in a band without Lee Renaldo...
I was going to, got here late.
-
Freddie Mercury: vocals, piano
David Gilmour: vocals, guitars
Omar Whatsisname from Mars Volta: guitars
Paul McCartney: vocals, bass, piano
Matt Tong: drums, vocals
omar rodriguez, i believe he would be more fitting for bass
my superband...the eagles
i think they are super enough
-
Vocals: Falco (of Mclusky)
Vocals: Vast Aire (of Cannibal Ox)
Bass: Jaco's soul in a shiny new android body
The Machines(tm): Tom Jenkinson (aka Squarepusher)
Decks: El-P
Just to see a concentration of manic energy that could form a critical mass and open a rift in space-time.
-
Okay guys, enough listing groups/already existing supergroups already. Honestly. That or get the fuck outta the thread.
-
I forgot to give mine a name. We're going to call them Little Umbrellas, simply because I was listening to it, it sounds like it would kinda fit, and it's such a bitchin song.
-
I'd just have The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene fighting over who gets to play what instruments while Steven Malkmus and Sufjan Stevens sing Pogues numbers.
-

-
okay.
right there you've got to have steve albini. your albums will sound incredible and you have an excellent guitarist to boot.
Steve Albini is fucking ace. He really elevated The Ponys' sound. "She's Broken" is an orgasm. :D
-
andrew WK and a drum machine
