So yea I was cruisin through the music selection at the mall after some great, greasy, almost-japanese food and I thought, hey I'll check out Mogwai, they sound interesting. So I go up to the counter and ask the girl if they have any of their cd's, hoping to get "Happy Songs for Happy People", and she takes me to show me the only one they have then she does what seems to be the metaphorical dick length contest and states, "I saw Mogwai twice live." I about laughed my ass off, seeing as i just read all the QC comics in one night and was a bit delirious. She then listed almost every band that is listed as good indie in the comics off the top of her head. So now I'm listening to Mogwai's "Government Comissions" album, first Mogwai I've ever listened to and thinking, damn they're good. I guess life isn't all about hardcore music and chicks with nice racks but bad taste in music. So I guess the moral of this rambling tangent thingy is, always trust the indie girl.

I only know 3 people with infalable taste in music. None of them are indie girls.
Today someone asked me if I had heard the new Bleeding Through album. I literally threw up.
-
I say trust amazon.
-
I say trust last.fm.
-
I say trust me.
-
I say trust your mom.
-
Indie-rock is full of enough mind games already without introducing femininity into the equation. Never trust indie girls.
-

And rightly so. Bleeding Through pretty much suck complete ass.
You should totally trust me and go buy everything King Diamond ever did. they are pure fun!
But I really don't trust anyone I know in real life, save for maybe two people. Since everyone else's taste sucks(Come one, it's fucking high school, everyone has bad music).
Last.fm doesn't really work since it seems to come out that everything is like the Beatles.
-
I (mostly) trust JJJ.
-
The only person I really trust on JJJ is Scott Dooles. He's just a giant music nerd and always seems to know his shit.
-
Is it wrong that I don't know what JJJ is?
-
Is it wrong that I don't know what JJJ is?
Nah. I have no idea what they're talking about either.
EDIT: Although I'm gonna guess it's this (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/).
-
I TRUST NO RADIO, INTRAWEB OR OTHERWISE.
-
That's the one ozphactor. You only really don't have an excuse if you don't live in Australia.
As far as presenters go, I'd trust Richard Kingsmill and Fenella Kernebone.
-
I know what JJJ is. Other than that I'm all at sea in this thread.
-
I'm all about Bunnyman's taste in music. Totally correlates with my own. Everyone else's is too subjective for my tastes.
EDIT: Oh, and John Peel. RIP.
-
My little brother has good taste, save for that goth/screamo/emo stuff he listens to at the moment. But he's a funny sort, listen to Circle Hits the Square or Amanda Woodward one moment, and the next grooving to John Mayer. The rest of my family has "bad taste" in bucketfuls to go around.
My mother listens to Enya and David Gray, my father is a bit indifferent but does like Rolling Stones. My lil' sis listens whatever crap twelve year olds listen to. But is keen on Tina Dickow which is redeeming for her otherwise abyssmal tastes. I don't really know what my big brother listens to, except for some mainstream.
That makes me sound like a snob doesn't it... I guess I am ;)
I haven't met anyone alive that share some of my tastes beyond my little brother. Basically we're the music nerds in our family.
However, I do trust Allmusic... mostly.
-
EDIT: Oh, and John Peel. RIP.
Fuck you man. Everytime someone says that, I choke up, then I have to play Teenage Kicks twice in a row.
-
Circle Hits the Square
do you mean circle takes the square? because they rock. and i do that, too. listening to stuff like that and then switching to syd barrett. :)
-
I have a few people. Sturge, Carl and I often share bands we like. Other than that I trust you guys or my instinct coupled with randomly surfing AMG and saying 'random' 'cos it makes me trendy.
-
NC: oh yes that's what I meant, curse crazy screamo bands with nonsensical names :)
Seriously I don't know half of what he listens to, though I know for a fact he listens to Orchid, Saetia, Amanda Woodward, Daitro, Trophy Scars and The Blood Brothers and more weird obscure stuff.
-
i trust my friends' judgement on music, most of the time. but it all boils down to opinion.
-
I say trust last.fm.
Truth.
-
I TRUST NO RADIO, INTRAWEB OR OTHERWISE.
Typically I'd agree, but I'd trust KEXP.org with my life. Amazing independent radio station out of Seattle, streamable online. I heart John in the Morning!
-
Most of my friends in RL do have pretty crap taste. Most of my online friends have such different music taste from me that we rarely find common ground. It's kind of bad also that I am also pretty lazy, I don't frequently actively look for new music, instead relying on others to show me the albums themselves and stuff. But thank goodness I have two friends who are way more knowledgable than me in music and enthusiastically introduce me to new stuff every once in a while.
My Musik Profile: http://www.last.fm/user/coonstar/
Friend 1's Musik Profile: http://www.last.fm/user/Antics/
Friend 2's Musik Profile: http://www.last.fm/user/submodality/
People say my taste tends to remain very typical indie-acts of the week or really common stuff, but eh.
-
JJJ plays some horrible crap sometimes, hence I prefer Last.fm for finding new stuff. Apart from that I just skim Pitchfork, allmusic and TMT.
A couple of my friends have decent taste in music, but the rest tend towards top 50 shite.
-
Jenno (and other people in Perth): RTRFM (92.1) Plays some awesome music that I haven't heard elsewhere (post rocky stuff, local stuff and just other stuff) before 3pm. Also later at night they have their specialty shows. 3 til seven or eight isn't worth it in my opinion.
-
I dont know how it is in the US, but swedish indiechicks ONLY listens to people with a childish look on life, and they ONLY listen to songs with people who cant really sing but does it anyways.
And then, the only bands that actually fit my description that I know of are Håkan Hellström and The Moltening Peaches, (is that what they are called? Something with peaches atleast) and I dont really know anything about The Moltening (or whatever) Peaches attitude to life.
...
Blablablabla.
-
What's the point of being in Sweden if you're going to listen to indie rock? Fucking metal, TO THE MAX. Seriously.

Allmusic is good for discographies, but their reviews are shit. Something Wicked This Way Comes unoriginal and lacking in spark, my ass.
-
I have a friend who has somewhat similar tastes to me. Except we discover each band we like seperately and from different sources and we usually don't realize the other likes the band until we ask "Hey do you like The Mountain Goats/The Fiery Furnaces/Wilco/The Hold Steady/Etc.?"

Yeah I know, I will be happy if I can go through the rest of my life without having to hear another Kisschasey song. I work on the basis that when something shitty comes on Triple J, I switch to Triple Z. When something terrible comes in Triple Z (and man, there is lots of terrible stuff on ZZZ. I've discovered a lot of things I would never have found otherwise because of ZZZ, but seriously, I do not want to hear 20 minutes of beeping and drum machines) I try JJJ again, and if that doesn't work, I just put it on classical FM for an hour or so.
-
I do trust Allmusic... mostly.
Win.
-
Most of my friends trust me for music ideas, and I trust my own judgement. I also get a few hints others on where to look. Right now I am listening to the Mr. Beast album by Mogwai which was suggested to me by people here :D

Pfft, Swedish indie rock is the shit too...
-
Okay, let's compare:
Indie rock (Not Swedish, but still. How much more different can it be? seriously.)
Pavement
VS.
Fucking metal:

Bathory (Quorthon blowing fire TO THE MAX)
-
i trust the alien transmitter in my head
-
(http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/images/wildzero/gwflamingmic.jpg)
Fucking Metal.
-
I can only assume that your images are broken because the metal broke it.
But the Swedish indie rockers will get the girls. For example Jens Lekman was voted 15th sexiest man in Sweden in 2004 by Elle magazine. And I hear that that Jose Gonzalez is a charmer...

So true. And when I'm in a more corporate mood, JJJ all the way.
-
rtr drive is kinda fun. as are some specialty shows. the dj people or whatever are annoying, often with poor taste in muzak.
-
I'm one of those people with pretty much no taste in music, because I listen to a bit of everything. For example, I'm listening to Sarah McLachlan on repeat now, after coming off of Badly Drawn Boy, The Decemberists, Cirque du Soleil, and Dream Theater. I'm also contemplating ordering that Reba McEntire 2-CD set off the TV.
I tend to trust a couple of friends, and Jeph's recommended listening. My boyfriend has turned me on to metal a bit, and my guy friends at school are all about Werewolves in London and the like. I tend to listen to more to indie, angsty!female, folk, and any combination thereof.

Okay, so where in NC does this store exist where they actually have smart people behind the counter?
I was at the Southpoint Mall in Durham at an FYE and the people there were either middle aged weirdos or idiotic college kids trying to earn a buck. I seriously need to find a decent record store in my area...
-
So technically, Laurie, I could get you to listen to Crotchduster if I really tried?
