Rob Kellenberger (Slapstick, Tuesday, The Chinkees' first album, Duvall, Colossal, Mike Park's backing band, The Smoking Popes, and probably at least ten other bands) and Neil Hennessey (The Lawrence Arms, Colossal)
Travis Barker (The Aquabats!, and a bunch of shitty bands)
so there's my rather punk rock-centric list. i wanted to include more jazz and funk drummers, but i couldn't think of any off the top of my head.
also, whoever was the original drummer for Dick Dale & His Del-Tones was AMAZING.
-
I don't know many drummers, but...
Matt Tong, of Bloc Party. The drumming on "Banquet" is pretty wicked. Come to think of it, the drumming on the entire album is pretty wicked. Yeah.
-
(http://www.drummerworld.com/pics/drum/dpa52/mikePortnoy.jpg)
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, and too many other side projects to even come close to counting).
Neil. Peart. (Rush)
Thread over.
Well, OK, more seriously:
John Bonham (RIP). (Led Zeppelin)
Keith Moon (The Who)
Richard Christy (most notably Death and Iced Earth, but a ton of side projects I really don't feel like listing.) Yes, the pic is crappy, but I couldn't find any others.
Gene Hoglan (Oh man, this is gonna be annoying. OK, Dark Angel, Death, Devin Townsend, Strapping Young Lad, among others, including a brief stint in Testament)
Mark Zonder (Fates Warning, Chroma Key)
Nick Mason (Pink Floyd). Most overlooked drummer ever? I think so.
Aaaand that's all I can think of right now.
[/img]
-
Dude, I actually forgot Pink Floyd HAD a drummer at times.
And your list pretty much hits it. Neil Peart's drum set is ridiculously pretentious.
-
Dave Lombardo (Slayer and Fantomas)
-
As well as seconding many above:

Michael Van Dyne (Arsis. On left.)
Beast Dominator (Finntroll)
And of course Dan Swano, who can be put into any of these threads because he plays everything!
I must admit, I don't pay much attention to drums a lot of the time. I must also admit I do have a few in my mind I'm keeping to post later because I' m tired atm.
-
i can't believe i forgot:

Just a couple off the top o' my head. I'm a drummer nerd so if you gave me some hours I could pick a couple hundred more probably.

Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth)

Michael Shrieve (The guy who did the solo on Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock).

I don't care how good Metallica was, Lars is not a good drummer. Like, at all. Ever. Period.
-
Basically, Dave Grohl is god, he's drummed in a few things; Tenacious D, QotSA, Nirvana, occasionally the Foo Fighters when showing off.
Also, Travis Barker and that guy from Rush, who also has a fucking HUGE drumkit.
-
(http://www.omguide.com/images/pixies/pixies3.jpg)
David Lovering (Pixies)
Seconded. Bonus points awarded for excellent magic show he used to perform as an opening act for Frank Black & the Catholics.

OK, props on Mitchell, who I forgot, but seriously, Lars Ulrich? He's a TERRIBLE drummer. He can barely keep time, let alone do anything interesting. Ever wonder why they don't play anything off ...And Justice for All except for One live? It's because Lars can't play the drum parts.
-
Joe Eisley - The Dismemberment Plan
Kudos to the Fugazi mention also.
seconded- the D-plan has some of my favourite drumming ever. Fugazi as well.
Rob DePaola of the Honor System is great.

Rob DePaola of the Honor System is great.
oh, dang. i wasn't expecting anyone to mention The Honor System. do you like The Broadways, too?
-
Concerning Lars Ulrich...
1. You might want to look up "humour" or "joke" in the dictionary some time. I knew mentioning him would make a lot of people angry. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously ("Your favourite midget with a Napoleon-complex").
2. I believe Lars is a better drummer then most people think. I mean; look at all the (ex-)Metallica members. Jaymz, Kirk, Robert Trujillo, Jason, CLIFF BURTON, Dave Mustaine. All first rate musicians and he played with them.
If he really was good for nothing, I think Cliff would have kicked him out long time ago.
BUT agreed, he is no match for Mitchell or Bill Ward (Black Sabbath whom I forgot).
3. No material from the ...And justice for all (except One) live?
Then I have several bootlegs where Metallica gets off the stage and a briliant Metallica-tribute band (who sounds EXACTLY like Metallica) plays "Harvester of sorrow", "Dyer's eve" and "Blackened" for them...
-
ABSU's Proscriptor McGovern. He's wearing a mic because he's the lead vocalist and playing a show.
Hellhammer (Mayhem, Immortal, Arcturus, etc etc etc etc)
-
Second a lot of these, Peart especially, and I only really have two of my own to add:
Kram from Spiderbait: It is goddamned hard to find a picture of this dude behind a drumkit, because no mere drumkit can contain him for long, but he is a great drummer, and manages to do extremely great lead vocals while going off behind a kit at their shows.
Danny Carey from Tool:
-
2. I believe Lars is a better drummer then most people think. I mean; look at all the (ex-)Metallica members. Jaymz, Kirk, Robert Trujillo, Jason, CLIFF BURTON, Dave Mustaine.
First of all, Lars was responsible for kicking Mustaine out of the band in the first place, and Metallica's fame is a sick zombie of Mustaine's creative ideas in the first place. And I certainly wouldn't call Trujillo or Newstead 'first-rate' musicians. Hell, I would say we can't even tell how good Burton was, because on Metallica's early recordings you can't even hear the bass (Although because of Orion, we know he could write songs).
Secondly, go listen to Master of Puppets for a few minutes, and make sure you listen carefully to the drumming. There's absolutely nothing interesting going on there. I know 13-year-olds (literally) who can drum better than he does in that song.
And finally, Metallica may have played some from AJFA live early on, but I know that they stopped doing so.
-
This thread is completely useless without even more pictures of John Henry Bonham (Led Zeppelin) :

And Ginger Baker (Cream). Where's the love for Baker?!

And let's certainly not forget the wonderful Richard Starkey, more commonly known as Ringo Starr of The Beatles:

Zach Hill (Hella, Nervous Cop, Team Sleep, Zach Hill & The Holy Smokes, etc)

You're either pulling my leg or you don't know your metal history... With the risk of making a total ass out of myself.
If anyone was responsible for sacking Mustaine, it was Burton. Lars and James will never admit it but there are a lot of people who will tell you that that Cliff was the leader of Metallica. He and Mustaine never got along in the first place.
When I say "first rate musicians" I'm talking about musicians with high technical skills. Maybe that you're a brilliant bassplayer but I would say that Jason and Robert are fuckin bass monsters. I've heard Robert do a solo and it was impressive.
Jason however indeed wasn't much of a songwriter. And it's a bit early to say anything about Robert.
If you search the Internet long enough, you shouldn't find it very hard to find some Cliff Burton footage (from Trauma to Metallica).
And you should be able to hear bass on the early Metallica songs...
Anaesthasia (pulling teeth) which is a 4 minute bass solo...
The intro of "For whom the bell tolls". Yes, it's a bass...
The Call of Ktulu
The only album where the basses are mixed in the background is ...And justice for all.
And no, they still play songs from ...And justice for all. Maybe they didn't play many songs when opening for the Stones but they did play at least 3 songs from AJFA on the last tour.
-
I don't play bass, but I can think of plenty of bassists that are better than Newstead or Trujillo.
But I was under the impression that Lars and James kicked out Mustaine for his heroin addiction, not that Burton kicked him out because their personalities clashed.
And isn't Trujillo out of the band now anyway?
-
Most great drummers were mentioned already, I especially agree with Jon Theodore, Brian Chippendale, Danny Carey and Gavin Harrison.
I would like to add:
Doug Scharin (June of 44, among other things) (http://www.comomusic.com/autoimages/Gallery-451076909525-11.jpg)
Todd Trainer (Shellac, Brick Layer Cake)
Mark Trombino (Drive Like Jehu)
I can't find a picture.
Damon Che (Don Caballero)
Weasel Walter (The Flying Luttenbachers, xbxrx, To Live And Shave In LA 2, Hatewave, whatever the fuck else)

John Davis (Q And Not U) (http://www.remainfabulous.net/img/Img_3716_QandNotU.jpg)
-
Kevin O'Donnell of Squirrel Nut Zippers, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, and Kevin O'Donnell's Quality Six. Other things too, maybe. He's a pretty cool guy.

He and Mustaine never got along in the first place.
Dude, Mustaine doesn't get along with ANYBODY. That guy is a prick.

Roland TR-606 (Big Black)

I'm not denying Mustaine is a dick, but he's made better music than all the other members of Metallica combined.
Anyway, I can't believe I forgot:
Jason Rullo (Symphony X).
-
Hellhammer (Mayhem, Immortal, Arcturus, etc etc etc etc)
Ah Jesus on a stick, I must have been tired!
I shall make up by posting a really gay picture of him and typing his name in capitals.
JAN AXEL VON FUCKING BLOMBERG!
-
Rob DePaola of the Honor System is great.
oh, dang. i wasn't expecting anyone to mention The Honor System. do you like The Broadways, too?
Of course! I like his drumming in the Honor System more though, but the Broadways rock regardless.

Stephen McCarty, Dead Meadow.
Um, Dave Grohl anyone? Has anyone actually listened to "Songs For The Deaf?" His work with QOTSA was amazing. (Oh, and he played in that band Nirvana too.)

Barrett Martin, Screaming Trees.

Lastly, Carlo Von Sextron of Eagles of Death Metal.
-
JOSH HOMME SIGHTING! :P
-
I shall make up by posting a really gay picture of him.
Best label I can think up for HH is "fancy lad", or maybe Dandy.
-
Totally agree with you Trollstormur on Proscriptor from Absu. He is absolutely fucking brilliant. To reiterate the point I'm going to post another picture of him

Ringo Starr (looks funny), The Beatles
I had to mention these two :P
A lot of the other ones I like have been mentioned, so...
-
Chris motherfucking Pennie. Don't argue. Shut up. You won't win this one.
Thread over.
-
Dave Grohl is not a good drummer. In fact, I would go as far as to say he is an average drummer who happens to be in one of the biggest bands in the world because he happened to be in a band that a dead guy was in.
That's not opinion. You can't look at someone like Dave Weckl and then say that Grohl is a good drummer. Like, seriously. Dude.
-
dude, dave grohl is not an average drummer, average drummers are the twenty-somethings who play in local punk bands for six years. maybe he isn't as good as some of the technical death guys or whatever but, that sure as hell doesn't mean he's average.
-
No, I'm pretty sure he's average. I don't know what exactly everyone talks about; the Nirvana durmming isn't anythign to write home about, and the same to the Foo Fighters. Seriously.
-

Ever listened to "Song for the Dead" by QOTSA? I've been looking for three years and I'm still not sure if I've found as decisive a display of drum pyrotechnics as that song (particularly the first and last minutes). I'm not going to say Dave Grohl is the best drummer that ever lived, or the best drummer in rock right now, but he's pretty freakin' good.
-
got it in one, wizz
-

Mitch Mitchell. Where is the love for him and Hendrix? That guy was fuckin' KILLER.
-
(http://www.mikedolbear.com/Images/Jimmy_chamberlain_drumfest05.jpg)
Jimmy Chamberlain of The Smashing Pumpkins/and his side project i can't remember the exact name of right now.
And I will second Zach Hill, I saw him play with Team Sleep, and sweet zombie jesus! Awesome.
-
(http://dinoscoundrel.tripod.com/images/colaiuta1.jpg)
Vinnie Colaitua. From Frank Zappa's band, also an idependant and well known studio drummer nowadays.
If you own Zappa's 'Joe's Garage' album, listen to him play on 'Keep It Greasy'. Insane.
-
I'm saying this partly because it will fuck off all the drum-wankers and partly because she plays beats that suit the songs they accompany perfectly and partly because she is way cute.

Meg White.
Okay, so it's mostly to fuck off the drum-wankers (or beat-beaters, if you will). I don't care what you think, because I reckon she is fucking choice.
-
yeah, the topic is favourite drummers, not best drummers. my favourite drummer is probably dave lovering because he does magic, or probably some really good-looking girl drummer.
-
(http://defleppard.com/biography/img/rick_2.jpg)
Rick Allen, or apparently Richard John Cyril Allen.
The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm!
-
No comment on my appreciation of Def Leppard...
-
Let me go ahead and mention Frost of Satyricon and 1349. He is great
(http://andyp.info/img/frost.jpg)

I'm agreeing with you man, she suits the songs she plays very well. PLUS I mean she's totally cute. Espically while drumming, that's just attractive.
-
No comment on my appreciation of Def Leppard...
What has 7 arms and sucks?

Very Ringo Starr. And like Starr's drumming, there's little I can criticize, because even though it's simplistic, it works quite well. And bravo to the girl drummers (eulogy to DMBQ's China implied).

pat101: an octopus giving a handjob?

Thanks for the Meg support, guys!
Girl drummers are so much cooler than girl bassists.

Me and my lack of education regading the Velvet Underground stand embarrassingly corrected. My bad.
Me and my complete ignorance towards Stinking Lizaveta (they do have an interesting name) forgive you ;)
So how would you describe Stinking Lizaveta, from the pics I'm reminded of riot grrrls or hardcore.
Edit: or I could look at thje picture and notice the big yellow STONERROCK sign :p
-
hands down greg saunier of deerhoof. and nervous cop if you're into that which is totally rad (greg saunier, joanna newsom, and the drummer from hella).
he just looks the coolest and craziest behind a drum set. bass snare and cymbol (though last time i saw him he had a hihat instead). sitting on a little milk crate jamming crazy.

not the best of pictures but the best i can do before i have to leave for class three minutes ago.

John French (Captain Beefheart + Solo)
I looked for like half an hour and seriously couldn't find a picture of him with his drums. Oh well. Here's this one because it's kind-of scary looking:
http://www.beefheart.com/zigzag/books/french2.jpg
-
I mentioned him earlier in the thread, isn't he amazing? Like, seriously, I can not imagine playing drums to Beefheart. too chaotic.
-
and now, a lady who absolutely destroys at the drums.
she is Sayuri, from the post-hardcore band Bleach. imagine a cross between System of a Down and Fugazi with Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto and Serj Tankian replaced by yelling Japanese girls. they rock faces off.

Oh I need more with them, I only have Revenge of the Canary Empire from when it was in the Forced Listening thread. It slays just about any male hardcore band I have heard and it is almost on par with The Blood Brothers, which is a huge compliment in my book.
-
I only have that one song too. Twas pretty badass though.
-
i have a bunch of their stuff, if you want it. PM me.

That guy from Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I don't know his name. If it keeps changing, then...well...I'm assuming the guy who did the drumming on Shake the Sheets is in this pic.
-
Chris Wilson. he's on the right.
-
I mentioned him earlier in the thread, isn't he amazing? Like, seriously, I can not imagine playing drums to Beefheart. too chaotic.
I read the Beefheart once put his tape recorder in the kitchen sink and recorded he and his wife talking. He gave it to the drummer and told him to play it. That guy's demanding.
-
I read that two, but it was him doing the dishes. Either way, it's pretty awesome.
-
yeah, boy. love the shit he did with bruce. isn't he on a tv show in the states?
-
I second a ton of the previous mentions, and add:

Pat Wilson (Weezer). He makes me giggle

yeah, he's the bandleader on Late Night With Conan O'Brien. he often gets in on the hijinx. he's really funny.

Janet Weiss (Quasi, Sleater Kinney)
I'm glad you mentioned Quasi. She does some AWESOME drumming for them. Hot Shit! = one of my favourite cds speaking music-wise.

Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire, Belle Orchestre) Simply the best helmet and keyboard player ever.

I know there are supposed to be pictures, but I'm at work and that would be too involved. That said-
Tim Dow- Season to Risk, Shiner, On, Year of the Rabbit
Jason Gerkin- Molly Mcguire, Season to Risk, Shiner
John Stanier - Helmet
Max Weinberg- E Street Band, Late Night with Conan O'Brien
Also- Jason Newstead and Robert Trujillo are both ridiculously talented musicians, and I hate Metallica. Both are very schooled, play upright and electric eatremely well, can read and score, and have chops in varying disciplines for miles. I have seen Newstead play slap that would make Flea weep. I have also seen Trujillo play upright bluegrass music in ways that would make Lee Sklar consider retirement. These guys are not only the bass players for their respective bands, but sought over studio guys, (especially in the case of Trujillo). While their preferred forms of music aren't my cup of tea, they're good.

i'll have to watch it if ever i'm over there.

again seconding many MANY up there
I just want to add Brann Dailor (Mastodon)
I love mastodon, and he played great live but by the gods he overplays so much. a talented guy, but he needs to learn a little restraint :)

I can't believe this thread has gone on this long without mentioning Max Roach:

Also, Billy Kilson:

Of course, the biggest dick of them all, the chopmaster Buddy Rich:
I don't care how many time signatures you can play in at the same time, how many 32nd notes you can play, Buddy Rich just sold it better. He could also play like a motherfucker.

I have a CD where he and Krupa are actually dueling. It's great.

Aw, dude. Not cool. Now I have to change my underwear.
Now Krupa could definitely sell it, though he didn't have anywhere near the chops that Rich did.

I don;t think these three have been metioned....

I don't care how good Metallica was, Lars is not a good drummer. Like, at all. Ever. Period.

I know they're a bit too popular to be well liked around these parts, but I'm still shocked that Guster's drummer/bongo-king, Brian "Thundergod" Rosenworcel, hasn't been mentioned yet.
I also love Joe Eisley. Man do I.
-
A bit too popular to be liked around here? Have you seen Dave Grohl be mentioned, specifically about Nirvana? I don't think we're having trouble with people being too well-known.

Well, I don't think there's ever been any question as to Dave Grohl's abilities. Guster and Rosenworcel, on the other hand, are still unquantifiable.
-
Actually, there has been question to his abilities. I did it a page or so back.
-
Hush now. Don't contradict someone whose avatar is that freaking cute!
Okay, I'm all better now. Carry on.

I... uh... pay no attention to the man behind the opinion!
