What is a band that, upon first listen, you could not stand but after continuous listens became more enjoyable and eventually you fell in love?
Mine is Bear vs Shark. I think they are one of my favourite bands now, and I haaated them the first time I heard them. Basically, I decided to make this thread while listening to them and playing air guitar. This facilitated weird looks from the ol' roommate.
-
Definitely Death. I'm still not super into them yet, but the vocals were really not my style until about a week ago.
-
You should totally get into Death. Some of their stuff is a little iffy, but Human is so badass it hurts.
I'm still trying to get into Agoraphobic Nosebleed, but whatever.
-
The Cure. I absolutely hated them when I first heard them. "'Boys Don't Cry'? How very original!" for example. At that time, I was into Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine almost exclusively (though they still remain two of my favorite bands EVER) and any band that wasn't able to wring strange sounds from their guitars was pure bullshit to me.
However, after hearing "Pictures of You" and "One Hundred Years", I slowly came to realize the error of my ways.
-
Lots and lots :
Spacemen 3
Kylie Minogue
Big Black
The Smiths
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (the first song almost put me off altogether)
Mogwai
so on and so forth....
-
The Arcade Fire
-
Totaly going to say "The Decemberists" and "Mogwai."
-
I have to say the same thing about Bear Vs. Shark, although I don't think they are amazing or anything. The album that I got from them is growing on me.
... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead's Source Tags and Codes took awhile for me to get into, though I couldn't tell you why now.
-
Linkin Park...
Oh no wait! That's the opposite!
Actually, The Mars Volta, whom I love a lot now, sounded like a bunch of freaks (or are they?) until the 4th listening of De-Loused In The Comatorium. And
And Postal Service too. I was almost hating everything with something electro when I heard them, but when I got tired of punk rock, I gave them a second try... fortunately.
-
Actually Neutral Milk Hotel when I first heard Aeroplane I really liked it, but a while a go I heard it again and totally fell in love with it. It's now on my list of favorite albums of all time
-
Actually Neutral Milk Hotel when I first heard Aeroplane I really liked it, but a while a go I heard it again and totally fell in love with it. It's now on my list of favorite albums of all time
Damnit, I was about to post the exact same thing. I listened to that album two weeks ago, and BAM, all of a sudden, it clicked. I've been listening to it almost nonstop since. Definitely one of my favorite albums of all time now.
Oh, and the same thing happened with the Arcade Fire a few months ago. Gah, come out with a new LP already, I've listened to Funeral so many times I'm almost sick of it. Almost.
-
Mos bands I listen to are an aquired taste, but the bands I really hated at some point but now love are pretty much limited to Converge and Fantomas. Also I remember not liking Skyclad at first.
-
modest mouse.
Now the moon and antarctica is one of my favorite albums ever.
-
Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire ...
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People was the first album off Jeph's RL that I listened to. And when I first listened it I was all like what the hell is that stuff. But when I next listened to one month later I was just like wow that is great. And NOb Broken Social Scene are one of my favourite bands.
-
Hard Fi; Pink Floyd.
-
mothers of invention - we're only in it for the money
-
Undoubtably The Wrens. I couldn't stand the singer's voice at first listen. Now, however, I love "The Meadowlands" all the way through. I guess it didn't help that I bought "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" at the same time because I never gave The Wrens a fair listen until about a year later; I listened to Neutral Milk Hotel constantly and forgot about The Meadowlands.
Others:
The New Pornographers
Bob Dylan (liked him well enough but didn't listen to him as often as I do now)
The Microphones
-
The Fiery Furnaces
-
Favez and Cat Power.
-
mothers of invention - we're only in it for the money
Such a great album.
-
Propagandhi
-
Popol Vuh.
I'm glad I gave them some time after Seligpreisung. I did not appreciate their heavenliness until Hosianna Mantra.
-
Arcade Fire & The Smiths for me
-
Ive had plenty of bands do the opposite.
Ive also had plenty of songs/enitre albums grow on me but never a band IIRC.
-
mothers of invention - we're only in it for the money
Such a great album.
indeed. but when i just bought it i wasn't prepared for it i guess. thought it was complete shit..oh well, i know better now
-
Mastodon. I look back know and can't figure out why I was so against them before.
-
At The Drive In. They're okay now.
-
New Model Army. I got an album ages ago because of Skyclad's cover of 'Master Race', didn't pay it much attention and thought it was okay. Now I've taken time to listen to the lyrics, I see what an enormous influence they are on the 'clad, and that they are, themselves, pretty fucking awesome.
-
Kepler. When I first got Attic Salt, the only thing that I could pay attention to for more than five seconds was "Thorughbred Gin". I figured that it made good ambient music, though, and I warmed up to it.
-
Neutral Milk Hotel. When I first heard them the only song I really liked was Holland 1945.
-
Dead Raven Choir were a little hard for me to get into, which is odd because they're right up my alley; avant folk quasi-metal.
-
LouisXIV?
sure, they're catchy. But also somewhat annoying when they embed themselves into yer BRAIN.
-
I haven't had anyone I hated on first listen but I have been freaked out and indifferent. I was freaked out by Under Byen's Det er Mig der Holder Trĉerne Sammen and forgot about them for a while then came to them and now they are my favourite band. I whore them every chance I get(see?)
I was indifferent with Cat Power - You Are Free, listened to it once then forgot about it and found it again, whereupon I loved it to bits.
-
I didn't like Wolf Parade at first, but after listening to them a couple times, I love it. They're really awesome.
-
Bruce springsteen. Specificly the wild the innocent and the E street shuffle. Also clap your hands say yea.
-
Sigur Ros.
I heard their stuff the first time, and I wanted to die. But now I like them.
Another one, actually, was Dogs Die in Hot Cars. My friend introduced them to me, I was annoyed by them, but now I enjoy them. Same with The Rocking Horse Winner.
-
Botch & Saccharine Trust
-
I hated AFI for years, then I really liked them for about 6 months a couple years ago, and now they annoy me again.
It was really weird at the time.
-
Cat Power has grown on me. I liked Wolf Parade a lot when I first heard them, but they've grown even more since then; same with the Arcade Fire. At least two of my friends told me they hated Wolf Parade when they first heard them, and then like two weeks later they're like "Tyler...I LOVE WOLF PARADE!"
-
hellogoodbye , this never leaves the room.
-
Iron and Wine and Neutral Milk Hotel, I used to be kind of unaccepting to different voices.
-
Animal Collective. First song I heard was "Native belle" and I was like "okay, so the last half of this song is pretty cool.... but it's all effect'd to death." "We Tigers" first caught my attention, and I decided I liked them, but then I heard "Did You See The Words?" and the rest of Feels and just fell in looooooooove.
-
arcade fire. i wanted to hate them because they were so damn hyped and everybody liked them, and i actually managed to do it until they released power out, at which pointi realised i was just cutting off my nose to spite my face. so now i love them like everybody else in the world. ah well.
-
Practically every band that I currently like is a band that I hated upon first hearing of their music.
To list a few:
Pearl Jam.
Machine Head.
The Beatles.
-
This is off-topic, but that is a fucking intense avatar. It's like you're (if that is you) staring into my soul and making me feel ashamed.
-
is liking Pearl Jam starting to become fashionable or something? like, when grunge hit everyone loved them because we were all caught up in the excitement of not having to listen to glam rock anymore. then we all realised that they actually sucked and that they just sounded good by comparison.
also: The Darkness
-
The yeah yeah yeahs are growing on me, I love y control so much now.
-
I pretty much hated Animal Collective when I first heard them, but I've grown to really appreciate some of their stuff--particularly, "Leaf House."
I'm sure there are others, but they're just what came to my mind.
-
I heard Radiohead's Hail to the thief when it first came out, and just absolutely hated it. But since hearing The Bends they have grown on me.
Also, Kasey Chambers (don't tell anyone) 'Not pretty enough' was a dreadful song, still is actually. But after listening to her other work, she is pretty good. Even if it is country.
-
The Arcade Fire
I would have to agree with this. At first, I wasn't really "getting it", but after listening to their album(s) a few times, they really grew on me :) I had the same experience with Death Cab as well...
-
Belle & Sebastian. When I first heard Tigermilk I was a bit embarassed by its tweeness, but later it became one of my favorite albums.
Flaming Lips. I thought "She Don't Use Jelly" was a fun song, and I liked the songs in A Priest Driven Ambulance, but it was many years until I realized that my sister's favorite band was one of mine as well. The Soft Bulletin was also hard to get into, as its style was so different from the Lips albums I had heard before, but now it's one of my favorite albums too.
Sonic Youth. I first heard them because of the Suburbia soundtrack, and wasn't very impressed. But I kept finding their albums heavily discounted, so I gave them a chance. I think they're super-excellent now, and I have almost all their albums. I really like their songs in the Suburbia soundtrack now, too.
-
Modest Mouse, especially Lonesome Crowded West
The Dandy Warhols
Interpol
Eels
Black Dice
The Stone Roses
Mogwai
Now these are all amongst my favorites, except Eels, which still gets me a bid down on occasions.
-
Lots and lots :Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (the first song almost put me off altogether)
FUCK THAT TRACK!!! I downloaded the album, listenned to that track and promptly deleted it.
Since then, I've fallen in love with the band through live appearances and streams, but haven't been able to buy/download the album.
Are you kidding? That track kicks ass.
-
This is off-topic, but that is a fucking intense avatar. It's like you're (if that is you) staring into my soul and making me feel ashamed.
It is me. And a big 'Uh..okay' to the comment on it =P
As for the whole Pearl Jam thing; for me anyway, they're a band that takes a while to grow on ya.
-
Promise not to laugh?
No? Oh...
Wall, anyways, Smash Mouth. Used to hate the hell out of them, but now I have everything I can get by them
-
I am SO sorry. Seriously, you were better off not getting into them.
-
Boards Of Canada... they used to scare the hell out of me...
Well, they still do, but I like 'em anyway
Oh, and the Spades... a little band from Kingston, Ontario. I enjoy them thoroughly now
-

When I first heard it I thought it sucked colossal amounts of Donkey peepee, but as per the title of the thread it has grown on me. It's great to sing it whenever some hipster thinks he's cool cause he's cool when he's heard one of the singles.
-
I am SO sorry. Seriously, you were better off not getting into them.
I know. Smash Mouth is kinda like beating your head against the wall. By the time you start enjoying it, you've got critical brain damage.
-
i most definitely hated the strokes upon first hearing. at first i thought it was the most unexciting thing i ever heard. all they did was drink beer (heineken) and smoked cigarettes like come on. not to mention at the time you also had the hives exploding and that awful band... shit ummm oh the vines fewf almost forgot. and then i realized .. hey i like beer and i like cigarettes and im pretty lame. but i like myself and i like the strokes. plus come on they have guided by voices on their side ... they are a shoe in for rock and roll heaven
-
I used to hate Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Modest Mouse. Now I love all three of em.
Although post-Black Album Metallica is horrible.
-
However, after hearing "Pictures of You" and "One Hundred Years", I slowly came to realize the error of my ways.
It's Pictures of You what got me into The Cure, that song is just, so fucking brilliant.
Totaly going to say "The Decemberists" and "Mogwai."
I'd says the same, The Decemberists is bloody original, and to me, and if you think The Decemberists is too 'folk-like', try and listen to July, July!.
I'm sorry, I have to admitted I'm laughing because quite a lots of people seemed to have a fondness of saying "totally" which seemed very orange county to me.
-
I wonder when someone will says that Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go grew on them.
-
The Arcade Fire
I would have to agree with this. At first, I wasn't really "getting it", but after listening to their album(s) a few times, they really grew on me :) I had the same experience with Death Cab as well...
Death Cab was rather an unusual band to like, some of their were brilliant, like the 405, which caught my attention, and I Will Follow You To The Dark, however, I'm still at a stage that I'm not yet 'getting it'
The Arcade Fire was pretty good, quite strange as well, especially with the 'Neighborhood' tracks.
-
Believe it or not, Kansas.
Prog-rocking, violin-playing, critically-loathed Kansas.
Yeah, the "Dust In The Wind" dudes.
At first it was just about "...Wind." And then I bought their debut just out of curiosity. I haven't looked back since.
I now own four of their first five records.
I ordered the 3rd one, Masque, the other day.
-
This has nothing to do with anything but ohhh Neutral Milk Hotel live in New Zealand is probably the highlight of my week.
-
I have to say I love ABBA. At first I thought it was shit but later I found myself loving them in a completely non facetious way. Simply put I don't think any band has put more effort in polishing thier songs.
-
Stravinsky. My dad loved him, and I played one of his works (Three Pieces for Unaccompanied Clarinet) before I really started to "get" any of it. Now it seems perfectly logical coherent (unlike lots of other 20th century music, e.g. Musique Concrete, which I still don't understand). Though, now that I think about it, I only started to like him after I had a copy of Rite of Spring. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe not.
-
Wait, what do Rite of Spring have to do with Stravinsky?
Although I love Stravinsky.
-
Wait, what do Rite of Spring have to do with Stravinsky?
Um... I don't get it. Is there a band called Rite of Spring or something?
-
Sigh.
Stravinsky's (arguably) most well-known composition is the ballet "Sacre du Printemps", or "The Rite of Spring" in English. You can hear it in Disney's Fantasia during the history-of-Earth / dinosaur part. Rites of Spring was a D.C. hardcore band in the mid 80s.
-

Huh. Cool. I have pretty much no knowledge in the genre of harcore.
-
Heh. The sigh refers to (no offense) Kai's comment, which in my experience is funny in the same way as "I can't believe they made a PLAY out of that Romeo and Juliet movie!"
Of course, everyone's experience is different so I don't pass any judgement of musical taste and/or knowledge
-
That's because I'm hardcore like that.
OMG PUNS
-

I hear Romeo and Juliet is based on West Side Story.
-
Fall Out Boy - I really love this guys now, at first I couldn't stand them however, they drove me nuts.
Modest Mouse - At first I thought they were really country and it kinda got on my nerves. After listening a bit more I liked it more and more.
Kings Of Leon - As above. I saw them live last weekend and they were so awsome.
-
I used to hate coldplay.
Now I love them.
-
Radiohead. I felt the same about Hail to the Theif, but I've matured a little since then, and it hasn't left my stereo in a good while.
Coldplay. I've always figured that I should give them a listen, from the radio singles I've heard, but only recently have I worked up the effort to download them. Mostly motivated by 'Talk' live at the Grammys. Albsolutely beautiful.
Oasis. The singles (Lyla, Wonderwall) REALLY put me off. I mean, those are god-aweful songs. But enough recomendations pushed me over the edge, and now I guess I like them.
-

There's nothing to "get" with I Will Follow You Into the Dark. It's just a nice, simple, heartfelt acoustic song. And the only standout on their blah new album.
We Have the Facts was PEAK, man. PEAK.
-
It took me quite a while to get into the whole genre of post-rock. At first I found it all boring, but now I love the stuff.
Also, when I first got Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People I didn't think it was all that good and now I love it. It took me a little while to get into Wolf Parade, too. And it took me ages to get into The Double.
But, unlike most other people, I fell in love with Neutral Milk Hotel on first listen, and I still love them just as much today.
-
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
King Crimson
It also took me forever to realize how awesome Lateralus is.
-
ordinary boys
i listend to thembefore this sudden boom in theier popualrity and didnt like them but now i seem to like them more :P
-
Popol Vuh.
I'm glad I gave them some time after Seligpreisung. I did not appreciate their heavenliness until Hosianna Mantra.
Werner Herzog movies would NOT be the same without Popol.
It took me a while, but I absolutely love Belle and Sebastion now. It also took me a while to really dig Soundtrack of Our Lives.
-
Now these are all amongst my favorites, except Eels, which still gets me a bid down on occasions.
Funny. When I'm depressed, the first thing I do is put on some EElS because it cheers me up. Despite the sad subject matter, I always find it has this feeling of 'I can overcome everything that's thrown at me'.
Except for the first half of Electro-shock Blues. That's some suicide causing stuff!
-
Led Zeppelin for sure. I'd, of course, heard Stairway to Heaven and a few other songs but since my friend was always talking about how great they were I decided to listen to them. I listened to the album Houses of the Holy a few times and thought they were pretty boring. A few months later I listened to them again and now I just love them.
Also Iron & Wine bored me to death when I first heard them, but now I love them as well.

it took me a while before I was able to get down with Kraftwerk. Also The Stranglers, I got one of their albums, and was like meh, but after trying it again a month or so later, they were like instantly one of my favorite bands. If they haven't grown on any of you yet, so to speak, I suggest letting them do so, they are outstanding.
-
Props for the Zappa avatar. Freak Out is a great album.
-
Freak Out is a great album.
agreed! thats another group it took me a while to get into, now i cant understand how people dont love that stuff
-
Yeah, but I didn't even have to work to get into them. My dad had just bought me an album of his for my 13th birthday and that was the starting point of it.
-
haha, i wish my dad had taste like that. as it stands i think hes kinda weirded out that i like zappa heh
-
Took me some time to realise how great Godspeed! You Black Emperor are
it takes a while to understand their stuff
same goes for Mogwai.
I really hated Tool when i first heard them, but know i own all their albums.
-
It took me a while to get into The Magnetic Fields, 69 love songs was really odd to me when I first heard it, but now I believe it to be a classic, or a future one rather.
-
I can't think of any bands that "grew on me", really, but there are a few albums:
The Velvet Underground's self titled. After having furiously rocked out (or whatever verb is appropriate to the Velvets; shot up skag, perhaps?) to The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat, I was initially angered and confused by the 1968 self titled. What is this soft, pansy music? At first I could only tolerate "The Murder Mystery", because it reminded me of "The Gift". It spent a long time collecting dust in the CD holder.
But then one day, about a month ago, bored and lacking in inspiration, I dug it out and threw it into the computer. Sure, it bore little resemblance the previous two albums, but it was amazing in its own way. "What Goes On", "Pale Blue Eyes", and, yes, even "After Hours". Maureen Tucker's girlish vocals give it an innocence rare in the VU's catalogue.
And just a few weeks ago I bought Loaded, which is in a similar vein (tee hee).
-
The Doors for me. I had to listen to "The End" before I actualy "got" them.
-
On a small scale, I wasn't too impressed with Black Mountain's self-titled on the first few listens. I really like it now.
-
Coldplay
Led Zeppelin
Muse
Pearl Jam
Radiohead
-
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Alan Parsons Project
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
(I have my bf to thank for those last three)
-
He is pretty nerdy. He totally wins. I mean, introducing your girlfriend to Alan Parsons Project and Jethro Tull? That takes some guts, because she either likes them or will laugh you out of the room for being pathetic.
<3 the Parson.
-
Did I mention Death already? I'm pretty sure I did. But just to be safe, Death.
And Primus, though to a much lesser extent.
-
I'm going to have to agree with Death, kind of. You see, I bought "Sounds of Perseverence," and loved it, but then I stopped liking death metal (you see, I had been liking death metal because of the image thing, and being a rebellious teenager). Slowly, I've started to get into it again, and Death has been one of the few bands I'm starting to listen to. In fact, there aren't really many other bands that I'd qualify as death metal that I'm starting to like. In Flames, but they're not really death, I wouldn't say.
-
I still can't really get super into either In Flames or At The Gates.
-
Well, I can't get super into In Flames, but they're pretty good upon occasion. Their guitarists just have such a great melodic sense that it's really cool. Of course, I only have Colony and Whoracle, so I can't vouch for any of their other albums. I've heard some of their newer stuff, and it's totally hit or miss.
-
Dark Tranquility is better than At the Gates anyway.
-
Sigur Ros is basically my lastest edition to my humble music collection. So quiet, smooth and relaxing.
Despite what people say, "()" was a good album.
-
Actually Neutral Milk Hotel when I first heard Aeroplane I really liked it, but a while a go I heard it again and totally fell in love with it. It's now on my list of favorite albums of all time

I definitely third the NMH bit.
-
Franz Ferdinand
The Shins
Modest Mouse
Radiohead
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Smiths
-
The Arcade Fire
Cat Stevens (obviously not a band by himself)
Solace
Mogwai
and sadly...
Panic! At the disco.
They're so catchy is scary!
-
Clap Your Hands say Yeah is the ultamate "grows on you and then your an adict" band. Listen to the cd once and you'll feel dilutional and screwed up. listen to it twice and your hooked.
-
Am I the only one that like Mogwai right away?
