Title: The Mix Tape Thread
Post by: pat101 on 23 Jan 2006, 18:53
Yes I'm stealing this idea right from tinymixtapes.com but I really don't care, I think it would be fun. Here's the concept; Someone posts a theme, doesn't matter what it is. Than everyone helps create a tracklist for it. You could list one song, or the whole list. Once the tracklist is finished the next person suggests one. I'll go first, I'd like a tape to help me "set the mood" when that chance arrives, but I'd also like to maintain my "indie sensibilities".

I'm thinking a lot of sigur ros and things of this nature.

I'm thinking Crotchduster - Crotchopus

"Dude, Dirty Asians who love Jewish dildos is on in 30 seconds, turn the TV on now!"

Hmm... I haven't listened to too much of Sigur Ros, but maybe something from The Album Leaf? Maybe Thule, from the album "In A Safe Place"?

Edit: Also, I'd reccomend American Analog Set's "Know By Heart" album's song, 'Postman'. It's nice and slow :D

Cool idea- one that induced me to finally register.

My suggestions:

Massive Attack-tear drop
My Bloody Valentine-Sometimes
Daft Punk-Something About Us

Daft Punk - Something About Us is on for sure as well as
Modest Mouse - Sleepwalking.

Takk and Glosli are making to for sure as well.

After a repeat listen My Bloody Valentine's on as well.

As is Mirah - Nobody has to stay

edit : Bright Eyes - Easy/Lucky/Free might have to be my closer, that or the Sigur Ros.

Múm "We Have A Map Of The Piano" would probably be on my list.

I also like Four Tet "Unspoken"...

The Icelandic Múm? If so, fuck yes. Also, Norah Jones Don't know if that loses you indie cred or something, but that music sets the mood. Especially the track Turn Me On.

Some Cocteau Twins perhaps, Lorelei would be perfect :)

Under Byen would work too, songs like Plantage or Om Vinteren, even Kyst.
Though I suppose that would be hard to get by :|

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the subject of this mixtape.

I was thinking, maybe we should cap each "mixtape" off at like, 20 tracks, so we could keep moving on to different styles/genres. Good idea or no?

Actually, I was thinking about this; Instead of Crotchduster's Crotchopus, I say switch it to "Let Me Into Starfish Land".  Classic song. well, that and Crotchopus is 14 minutes long; not good for a mix tape, really.

If when you say "set the mood" you mean "I'm gonna sit in my room and cry for 90 minutes" then you're on the right track. And for my contribution to "The Mood" music, I say "Let's pretend we're Bunny Rabbits" by the Magnetic Fields.

How about some older stuff?  Like Tangerine Dream or Prince or something.  Song ideas:
Tangerine Dream - Dolphin Dance
Prince - Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
Röyksopp - Eple
Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better

Or someone could just suggest a new theme.

I wouldn't call anything by Crotchduster 'classic'. Not because they aren't good, but because the term 'classic' tends to mean highly regarded by a large number of people.

Psh. The cool people call them classic.

EDIT: How the hell could I forget: Tenacious D - Kielbasas Sausage and/or Fuck Her Gently. COme on.

Hmm...  lets have a pretty random theme.  How about a cinematic soundtrack for a movie about animals conquering the world in a bloody coup.

Will a song about a civil war between trees count?

If anybody other than Kai knows the song I am referring to, then they win a billion awesomeness points.

Anything by Einsturzende Neubauten.  That usually does the trick.

The bleeding obvious choice is Pink Floyd-Sheep. Would make a great intro to such a CD.

If you want something abstract, understated and unnerving, go with:
Broadcast - Man is Not a Bird
Matthew Herbert - White Bread, Brown Bread (or really anything off Plat du Jour, a concept album based on food and modern food processing).

And if you want to go the heavy aggressive route:
Lightning Bolt - Birdy
The Mae Shi - Crimes of Infancy

R.E.M. - Disturbance At The Heron House. Like "Sheep," it's not subtle, but it's just about perfect for the theme.

Assuming we're talking about the same Tree Civil war song....

"There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads"

Totally badass.

Isn't it Rhapsody?

(trying to get some awesomeness points...)

May I suggeset Black Sabbath with War Pigs? With the Happy Tree Friends theme as the song the animals sing at the end as they're partying around a fire made of human beings, eating marshmallows.

Bubble-gum flavored marshmallows.

Not the song I was thinking of, but if Rhapsody has a song about Tree Civil War I'd love to hear it.

I checked and the song I was thinking about is Forest of Unicorns ... Well, it talks about trees and unicorns and war, but not between them.
