I've kind of... run out of music to listen to. I need something to please my ears and my brain. The old stuff just isn't cutting it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what music I should sample? I'm pretty open minded about music, so the most obscure to the most mainstream suggestions are welcome. :-)

Well, sicne you're pretty open Minded, we're going to go head on into the AVANT GARDE. Now, you're going to have to really struggle to get into these guys, but once you do, it's totally worth it, and opens you to a whole new spectrum of music.
The Residents - These guys are seriously one of my favorites. They've been going on for a good 30 years or so, and while it not being super inacessible, it's still fairly odd. Some of their stuff is hit and miss, but you can't go wrong with ANYTHING they did pre-1980. I'd reccomend picking up their latest album though, Animal Lover, first.
Frank Zappa - This guy is probably the most acessible of all the people I'm going to mention; Some of his stuff is just really awesome, odd rock and roll. But when he actually gets into super experimental mode, It's amazing. Easily the one artist I love more than any other person EVER.
Captain Beefheart - Basically, Frank Zappa if he did drugs while playing prog blues. So awesome. If you can get ahold of it, Trout Mask Replica is the best of his albums, and generally stay away from Bluejeans and Moonbeams and the other one, Satisfaction Guarenteed I think. They're kinda boring.
John Zorn/Naked City - This guy is crazy. Naked City is one of his many projects, and it goes from Jazz to grindcore to babbling in seconds. Totally amazing. Also does alot of stuff with Patton.
Mr. BUngle/various Mike Patton side projects - Mastermind behind Mr. Bungle and so many side projects that it's impossible to count. To start off, get Bungle's California; Easily the easiest to listen to.
Crotchduster - Avant Garde Joke Metal. Big Fat Box of Shit is one of the funniest, best albums ever. Just go get it, seriously.
There's a good start.

Right now I'm totally into Panic! At the Disco. They freaking rock my socks off, and at least worth a listen.
Motion City Soundtrack is pretty cool too by me.
And who could forget Ok Go?

Mr. BUngle/various Mike Patton side projects - Mastermind behind Mr. Bungle and so many side projects that it's impossible to count. To start off, get Bungle's California; Easily the easiest to listen to.
I'll add my vote to this. Not only is most of great, Patton has done so much stuff that it should keep you occupied for awhile. And then if you look into the bands of the other artists he works with... You get the idea.

It all depends on what you like, I suppose. Right now, I listen to a lot of Wolf Parade, Opeth, American Analog Set, Arcade Fire, etc. etc.
I'd really reccomend Arcade Fire. I love them.
Also, if you like heavy metal, Opeth, or in a pinch, System of a down, are awesome.

I heard a little Dark Tranquility the other day and liked that... would have liked a little bit of versatility in the vocals though (melodic segments) but I guess that means I'm just not metal enough yet =P.
Anyway, back on topic.
I've been listening to a lot of Pinback, Porcupine Tree, and Protricity lately. Hmm... seems to be a trend here... anyway, you may like them.

Im not much for metal meself, save Blood Brothers, which I personall think is borderline metal/punk.
I am major into the rock side of things, the Capitals, the Organ, the New Pornographers, Arcade Fire...
I love Mogwai and would heavily suggest them, and also Metric.

John Hiatt's "Crossing muddy waters" does the trick for me.
Also "Bubblegum" from Mark Lanegan, some Leonard Cohen is always nice.

MF Doom and all his aliases (Viktor Vaughan/King Geedorah etc), and Madlib (aka Quasimoto) are a couple of my favourite hip-hop MCs/producers. I recommend checking out their collaboration 'Madvillainy', Quasimoto's 'The Unseen' and/or MF Doom's latest, 'Dangerdoom' (with Dangermouse producing). They are off-the-wall fucking brilliant!

If by old stuff, you don't mean classic rock, I'd suggest getting into some of the remnastered old stuff. Like, I have my friends Led Zeppelin greatest hits remastered, and it sounds great, same with the Who's tommy album. Though, if you DID in fact mean classic rock by old stuff, then I'd suggest:
The Wall Flowers - Bob Dylan's son!
Guster - Just awsome, bongo drums=teh cool
And the Flaming lips - Why shouldn't you listen to them? They are referenced constantly in QC, so, they must be good!

I'd like to un-mention the Wallflowers, thus cancelling out any need to sample them. Unless you like AOR music by a band that would never have been signed if a certain someone didn't have a certain famous father. Listen to the dad instead.
Sorry to be negative, but if we're talking about expanding boundaries here, the Wallflowers are not the band to do it.

Thread poster, some albums I've enjoyed recently:
Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off, Baby: Even better than Trout Mask Replica, in my opinion. Less noisy, but with the Magic Band's best performances and some absolutely incredible composition. Out of print, but you can probably find it on Soulseek or the like.
Alec Empire & Merzbow - Alec Empire vs. Merzbow: The most intense live album I own. Probably Merzbow's least atonal record (disregarding the marginal Music for Bondage Performance series), thanks to Alec Empire's great, dirty hip-hop beats.
Diamanda Galas - Masque of the Red Death: Perhaps the most amazing voice in music. I bought this after hearing her on a John Zorn album (the Ennio Morricone tribute). She could be best described as an avantgarde Marilyn Manson, although she also has a knack for classical singing. She is a classically-trained with a four octave voice, by the way. I've never heard high notes sung so clearly.
Having gone on a post-holiday CD spree, I could go on for a while, but I'll cut myself off there.

Go check out Oingo Boingo. They are the quintessential 80's New Wave fun band. Now laced with pedophilia! Because you can't have the 80's without it.

Yes on Beefheart, yes on Four Tet, yes on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I'd add Muddy Waters (blues), Custard ('90's art rock, if you ever see a copy of Loverama buy it and cherish) and The Herd (Aussie hiphop).

Might I suggest that you check out Madrugada (http://www.emi.no/madrugada/audiovideo.asp)? Don't know how easy their albums is to get outside of Norway, but just listen to the samples (starting with 'The Kids are on high street' & 'Majesty' might not be a bad idea ;)) on their website (http://www.emi.no/madrugada/audiovideo.asp).

Well, as the first Bathory record is pretty much Motorhead plus Venom, and Abbath Doom Occulta now sings full-time in a Motorhead tribute band, and every black metal fan I can think of whose opinion I know likes Motorhead, often more than any of the other old school classic British acts, that actually probably wouldn't be too far off. Then, I suppose it's normally the fans of black metal rather than the musicians that are close minded: Marduks singer has a horrorpunk side project, Fenriz DJ's house music and Varg Vikernes met his girlfriend/wife/fuck you conflicting reports (the one who burned down whatshisface's house) at a rave.
Also, Kvitrafn from Gorgoroth is a primary school teacher.
Okay, I'll cease the black metal anecdotes.
Looking up, Kid Militia's suggestions are all pretty damn sweet, EXCEPT Sabbath slayed with Ozzy as well. Great as Dio is, the five best Sabbath tracks, apart from Heaven and Hell, are all Ozzy: War Pigs, Electric Funeral, Black Sabbath, Children of the Grave...the man is the grand-daddy of Doom. OH LAWD YEAH.
Also, the first Ozzy record is pretty damn fucking nice. Suicide Solution, Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley...yes please!
Also, listen to some Skyclad. Research has shown that only awesome people listen to Skyclad.

Right now, I'm addicted to Microphones. Lo-Fi experimental noise pop/folk. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's freaking awesome if you get into it. I'd recommend The Glow, Part 2 to start.
The Dismemberment Plan is always good. Fugazi also.
To be very safe, definently check out The Shins. Great stuff, plus easy to get into.

If we are talking about the same Mew, you would have to buy something before Frengers to get some noise pop. Half the World is Watching Me for example. Definitely not their new one And the Glass Handed Kites because they went prog big time on that one.

I think I love you. Every suggestion up there is amazing. However, for me, I got Mr Bungle's cds in chronological order, and I thought that worked pretty well.

Yeah, actually nobody should ever be subjected to Rhapsody, except for its hilariousness content (which is pretty high).
I'd suggest looking for a band called Brave. They're kind of still together. They're a "local" (signed to a record label, but not a big one) band from around DC (VA side). They're all really cool people, and amazing musicians. They're not at all avant garde, but very little in rock actually is.
Also, I don't think it's been mentioned (probably considered too obvious, but I've seen some obviouser [it's a word, look it up!] bands mentioned) but Les Claypool. A little more experimental, but not as much so as a lot of people have mentioned.
Here's a quick list of some other bands that are pretty cool:

Racer X (and Paul Gilbert's solo stuff, which is pretty straight-up stuff, but really well-done)

Also, I'd recommend checking out Michael Daugherty's Metropolis Symphony, but more specifically Bizzaro.

Well, my definition of "brutal" differs severely from yours, it seems. I can see where you're coming from (especially considering the bands you've suggested), but I still stick by my guns that The Crown are both at least brutal. I'll concede the fact about death metal due to the lack of blasting, mainly. The main reason I don't consider them thrash is because my main exposure to thrash is stuff like Killswitch Engage and Hatebreed, which have radically different vocals (more uncontrolled screaming than The Crown has). Though, maybe I'm completely wrong about the majority of thrash.

just try listening to some sodom and kreator, then you'll see why crown falls under the same catagory.

Ah, I am, of course, familiar with Slayer and Metallica, but I'm not much into thrash. I guess I never really bothered to figure out what The Crown are, because I saw them at a death metal show (opening for Cannibal Corpse. I was young and stupid).

Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I used to like them, and own four of their albums (as many as were out when I bought them, I don't know if they have any more). It's just a little too over the top for me. At least it's not Manowar, I guess.
