Hey kids, I'm curious to see which formats people are keeping their music in these days, and at what volume, so I'd like to hear the size of your collection in all the formats you have. I will start:
nescience
CD: ~1000
Vinyl: ~250
Digital: ~7500 tracks at 30 GB, roughly 250 full albums
Tape: 0
8-Track: 0
Reel-to-Reel: 0
DVD: 2
SACD (only, not counting hybrids): 0
edit:
When I say CD, I mean ONLY released CD, not albums stored on your computer that once were CDs, not personal CD burns or anything like that. If you have a CD-R you got at a show or as a promo, I call it a CD. If your friend made you a copy of Who's Next, that's a collection of digital files. If you downloaded (even legally) a copy of Who's Next, that's a collection of digital files. If your friend made you a mix, I'd probably call that a collection of digital files, but that's up to you. If a local band you know gave you their CD-R demo, I'd probably call that a CD. Use your judgement.
Anyway, if anyone else can think up any other media, go ahead and post. Well, on with it!
edit 2: realized I have a couple DVD-Audio discs
-
CDs - 262 (I am but a poor college student, and there's also a bunch of stuff out there that I don't really have a strong interest in buying)
Digital - 5163 (42 GB, no idea how many full albums)
All else - 0 (I don't have a good enough stereo system to justify buying a good record player, a good record cleaner and getting vinyl. I just have a Sony stereo reciever and a pair of NHT SB3's)
-
CD: about 10-20
Vinyl: about 5-10
Digital: ~1703 albums(95% are full albums), about 20,000 songs
Tape: 0
8-Track: 0
Reel-to-Reel: 0
DVD: 0
SACD (only, not counting hybrids): 0
i really should get a way to backup all my music,
cause at this point, if my harddrive crashes, i say goodbye to almost all of my carefully collected music.

DVDs are probably my favorite choice. They hold 4.7Gigs of data. What more could you want?
-
it would take me about 25 dvds to backup my whole collection,
and im too lazy to do that.
im probably going to just buy a new harddrive(probably external) and just copy everything to that
-
CDs- Maybe 10 or so, bought my first two in a long time last week.
Digital-12,511 songs, on 54 gigs or so.
-
All else - 0 (I don't have a good enough stereo system to justify buying a good record player, a good record cleaner and getting vinyl. I just have a Sony stereo reciever and a pair of NHT SB3's)
Understandable. I waited until after college to invest in a record player and buy vinyl. One note: I find that cleaning vinyl with soap and a stiff-bristle toothbrush is sufficient to make significant improvements in sound quality for tired and dirty records. Then again, "tired" and "dirty" can sometimes be a very good thing...
-
CD: A good 300 or so.
Vinyl: Oh, hundreds upon hundreds. Boxes. I mean, too many.
Digital: 17290 at 97.81 gigs.
Tape: Again, like the vinyl, boxes upon boxes, but even more boxes. Because it's the only kind that my car takes.
The rest at 0.
-
You guys are going to laugh, but:
Digital - 97
I'm one of those ultraselective people with OCD when it comes to music. I can't keep a song unless it's ridiculous and I never want to skip it.
-
So, this is the music geek's version of "my penis is larger than yours".
Me and my dad's (I'm only 17)
CD: 3500+ Pop/Rock Ordered alphabetically from ABBA to ZZ Top about 300 Jazz /Bossa Nova CDs, about 100 "World music", 400+ Classical and some 200+ Modern.
Digital: 8 Gigs and about 25 Data CDs (soon to be passed into DVD)
Vinyl: About 500, some I have repeated on CD or Digital though
Tape: About 50, no tape player anymore though.
-
So, this is the music geek's version of "my penis is larger than yours".
EXACTLY! I'm also interested in seeing the preferred media for different people.
-
CD: Around 50
Digital: 3464 tracks, 47.92 GB, 257:49:17
Vinyl: 3
Tape: 0
-
CD: 976 (counted them recently)
Digital: 9647 tracks, ALL legal.
Vinyl: 546
Tape: 332
the big irony is that I'm profoundly deaf, born deaf.
-
So, this is the music geek's version of "my penis is larger than yours".
I'm British, so I'm not 'ung like a horse, horses are 'ung like me.
-
So, this is the music geek's version of "my penis is larger than yours".
No, of course it's not... Yeah, okay, I'm probably only saying that because mine is profoundly smaller than everyone else's.
-
CD: ~150
Digital : 4000/20GBs
Vinyl: ~20
Tapes: 5ish

Or we could cut the rest out and I could just say:
Penis size: 12"
-
The length of my penis is proportional to the number of CDs I own at any given time.
However, I am not at liberty to share the scale of proporation at this time.

ha, that's a nice respond mate.
-
Cds: a pitiful 28 but my new years resolution was to at least double my collection (from, like, 18 so I'm well on my way. I'll probably change that to quadruple in a few weeks).
Digital: 35ish, 28 of which I own on cd
Vinyl: 0, due to the lack of a record player or speakers worth playing records through.
DVD's: 0.
Tapes: 0, but I'm currently in the process of copying cds to tapes and making mixtapes because my car only has a tape deck.
-

My dad has a friend with a Terrabyte of music, and most of it's from his own CDs
The guy could start his own online music store for christ's sake
Edit: "His own CDs" meaning his personal collection, he doesn't have a band or anything
-
CD: 9, though I've been meaning to destroy these in some creative fashion. Suggestions?
Digital: About 400 full albums. Exact count: 4983 songs, 13.5 days, 26.68 GB.
-
CD: ~230
Tape: 2 (Nevermind, and Cream's Greatest Hits)
Vinyl: 10
-
CD: like 3,000
SACD: i don't even know what the fuck this is.
Really? You've got three thousand CDs and you've never run into a Super Audio CD before? Not even a hybrid? It's a format that currently competes with DVD-Audio in the high-end digital audio media market. Requires special equipment for playback (but I think a Sony DVD player works).
-
i honestly don't have any of those, altho i think i get what you mean now that you've explained it. you have to bear in mind that i'm a fucking idiot, tho, so i didn't get it at first. and edscoble, i'm sorry man. i've been buyin cd's since i was born, vinyl just doesn't do it for me.
-
what if is says HDCD on cd and it works with normal cd player.

I have a few hybrids but I just counted them in the CDs. I love my Dark Side of the Moon on SACD though
-
Well yeah, I think hybrids should count as CDs. It's a real commitment to buy an actual SACD and though I have an SACD-enabled player I have balked at doing so to this point.
As far as HDCDs, Wikipedia says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCD) that it is a Hi-Def CD format that Windows owns. I don't know anything about it other than what I skimmed from the article.

Haha, this is like a contest for most music nerds, but I've never found a reason to keep music I don't like, so if I don't like it, I try to get rid of it somehow. I don't see the point of having a music library I will never listen too. I also try to mostly stick with legal ways of obtaining music.
CDs: about 220
Digital: 3700 tracks at 18 gigs, about 300 full albums
DVDs: one
Vinyls: like 2, but they're both at home...
Tapes: Probably 10 or so, I haven't used any of them in years
-

But, If you have more music your penis gets larger.
-
Also, the more music you have, the more choices you have. I've gone through massive phases of not liking certain bands/albums, only to come back to them years later.
-
I have around 250-300 CDs. All of it is copied to my computer (and then to my Creative mp3 player), so I also have around 2100 mp3s at around 19.1 GB.
-
CD: 700-800
Vinyl: 500
Digital: 1500 songs
SACD: 2 (Neil Young's Harvest= Good stuff. Elton John's Honky Chateau= Mandolins coming out of every corner of the room. MANDOLINS COMING OUT OF YOUR MIND.)
DVDs: 6 or 7
-
update: a pitiful 29 cds.
-
So far...
CDs : 91 (just got my hands on a Silver Apples re-issue)
Vinyl : 23
Digital : 2830 tunes
Tape : 4, given to me by my dad (Dylan, The Cars, ZZ Top and AC/DC)
8-track : nil
Reel-to-reel : nil
DVD : 30-ish total, 2 music-related
SACD : nil
But hopefully, with access to both a kick-ass record shop and a sprinkle of OCD, I can build on this. Not helping is the fact that I have no internet at home at the moment.
-
CDs: 100ish
Vinyl: 1
Tapes: Probably a couple lying around
Digital: 21000 songs, 71GB, don't know how many albums.
DVD: 1 or 2
-

Digital: 42 albums

don't encourage him!

...and edscoble, i'm sorry man. i've been buyin cd's since i was born, vinyl just doesn't do it for me.
vinyl has soul! they're big and black! it's... shiny!, I mean c'mon, it's shiny, all men like shiny!
-
Shiny... and big! Like your penis will be if you buy more vinyl!
-
Am I the only one here who isn't that exicted by the idea of a shiny penis?
-
Yes.
-
Definitely.
-
Am I the only one here who isn't that exicted by the idea of a shiny penis?
Well, if you prefer having a dull penis... well you have the right to have a shitty taste in cock.
and to make this semi on topic, I now have less CDs because some bastard stole my bag with all my Belle and Sebastian and another 10 CDs.
-
I'm more excited about the prospect of having a penis with grooves in it corresponding to sound waves.
-
Of course, everyone would want a penis that can be played with a needle. Also, if you lose it or wear it out (always a concern), go around the block and by another one at a garage sale where some old lady has had them stacked up since her son moved out in the late seventies.
-
CD's: 286 albums
Digital: 87 full albums
Vinyl: 1... and it's the only vinyl I will EVER need.

I SO HAVE THAT ALBUM. I'm not even kidding, I really do.

So do I. It's as old as I am.

That sounds like an Escher painting that never was.
-
137 CDs, 41 DVDs. One SACD (Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds musical from 1978), which I regret buying, because I can't import it on to my computer, which is where most of my listening takes place.
And I can't really notice the difference in sound quality. Well, on the bright side, it was $20, which is cheaper than most regular CDs.
-
Argh, double post.
-
...........
I rarely buy a CD that costs $15. Usually I wait until I can find them for under $10 (yay for used CDs!).
-
CD: 600-800
Vinyl: 200-300
Digital: 10GB (I think, can't access my own hard drive at the moment)
Tape: 20-30
DVD: 2
VHS: 1
-
CDs: ~1400 (Can't really be bothered to count, but I haven't bought too many new ones since it was 1400)
Vinyl: 300-400 (that don't overlap with the CDs)
Digital: 120GB or ~2500 albums (about 400 of those overlap with the CDs)
Nothing else, I think. A few tapes somewhere, maybe, but I don't have a tape player.
-
CD: about 400
Digital: 60 seperate from my cd collection i don't like the sound of my computer compared to my hifi (although i have most of my cds on my mp3 player)
Vinyl: 4-5 i don't have a record deck an they are too much of a frivilous item for somebody who is usually skint
Tape: 0
-
Well over 1000 Vinyls, mostly given to me by my parents ranging from (This is not a joke) Pac Man Fever to The Canadian Ukrainian Folk Singers.
To be fair, it also includes almost every Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Stones, and Who album.
CD's, 50-75,
Tapes.....1

Please, pity my tape collection.
-
CDs: Around 30
Vinyl: 2 (One is Disney Christmas songs and the other is the original 80's soundtrack for the Strawberry Shortcake TV show)
Tapes: About 15
Music on computer: About 900 songs (all of which were obtained legally)
I'm poor and can't afford to buy nearly as much music as I would like to.
-
shitty taste in cock
shitty taste in cock

Also, something like:
CDs: 200.
Vinyl: Anything from a collection of about 250 that my brother doesn't take away to college. Which is gonna be mostly crap.

Tapes: Maybe 30 or so, but I don't listen to them. They all just sit around.
Music DVD's: The Tenacious D Dvd. And the bonus DVD that comes with Hiromi's "Spiral".
-
Cd's: ~300
Vinyl: ~150
Tapes: Like 20 or 30 or something
Digital ~7778 (I'm OCD when it comes to file naming and orginizing so there are still about 20 albums in my temp folder that have yet to be properly named)
