So, what are your favourite songs which make use of a string section? Try to mention songs not by string sections (Kronos Quartet, Apocalyptica, Bond) but if you really like them feel free to do it.
Some of my faves:
There is a Light that Never Goes Out - The Smiths
Lucky Man - The Verve
Ocean Rain - Echo and the Bunnymen
Stop Your Crying - Spiritualized[/list:u]
PS The first person to say November Rain loses (kidding)
-
REM - Drive
REM - Nightswimming
Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven
-
the entirety of Melody Nelson
-
Dream Theater's Octavarium has a backing orchestra in parts, as does Symphony X's The Odyssey.
-
Sufjan Stevens - The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us!!
And Dirty Three. Everything they've ever done.
-
Sufjan Stevens: Chicago
Wilco: Jesus, etc.
The Mountain Goats: Dilaudid
and everything by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
There's loads more stuff on Sufjan's Illinois that have equally beautiful strings, but Chicago is the standout, for me.

Nick Drake - Way to Blue

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes
Built to Spill - I Would Hurt a Fly
Cursive - Staying Alive
DMB - The Stone
Matt Pond PA - Snow Day
Modest Mouse - The Stars Are Projectors
-
Pink Floyd - Fletcher Memorial Home, When The Tigers Broke Free
The Beatles - Day In The Life
Radiohead - Pyramid Song, Climing Up The Walls (I actually 'air conduct' to those songs. Seriously.)
Blur - The Universal, To The End
Oasis - Whatever, Don't Go Away
Sigur Ros - Milano
Nick Cave - countless songs - Hallelujah, Do You Love Me? (Part Two), Oh My Lord, There She Goes My Beautiful World has some on I think; I could go on. Anything with Warren Ellis playing on it, basically.
Bob Dylan - Hurricane
Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life
The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York
-
Zappa's orchestral stuff. So great.
-
Sigur Ros - Milano
How could I forget that? Great song.

(Kronos Quartet, Apocalyptica, Bond)
Yikes, that's one eclectic freaking mix of string quartets! Also, Kronos Quartet doesn't actually write (or arrange) anything, so there could be no pieces by them.
Anyways, here's mine:
Led Zepplin - Kashmir (it's supposed to be a string patch...I think)
The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
and that's about it, except for one that deserves mentioning even though it's originally written for a string quartet:
Beethoven's late string quartets. They're absolutely incredible, and if anyone tells me that it's really sad he never heard them (like my dad does), I'm going to be upset. Of course he heard them. He just never heard them performed.

Well, out of those three quartets I only like Kronos, and their performances could very well be on the thread. Mother Nozipo especially.
Kashmir is indeed great, unfortunately in my mind it will always be tainted by Puff Daddy's raping.

Puff Daddy's raping.
*stuffs fingers in his ears* LALALALALALALALAAAAA! PUFF DADDY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO KASHMIR! LALALALALALALA!
-
American English, Idlewild.
Mmm.
-
Nick Drake - Hazey Jane I
Serge Gainsbourg - L'Hotel Particulier
more to come, maybe

Try to mention songs not by string sections
Would that rule out Charles Mingus?
Custard - Ladies and Gentlemen
A lot of Nick Cave
-
Well. I like Pavement.
They use guitars!
-
Would that rule out Charles Mingus?
Mingus only played in an actual string section in school, and back then he played cello. Plus he never composed any music during that period.
-
That's not entirely what I meant but I'm too hot and hungry to explain (or think).
