Alright...so maybe im new to this genre, but none of my friends have heard of it either...AND IT IS FUCKIN OY-SOM!
Yes believe it or not I have friends...quite a few actually.
Anyway, the genre is called Tropicalia. A good buddy of mine discovered a compilation of the artists of the genre. It's basically brazilian music coupled with funk and a sort of rock / pop with Brazilian lyrics - sensuality kicks ass! And when i say pop i don't mean it's nowaday DOOF DOOF music NOOO! this is mad shit! I'm listening right now, and my god I can't believe that I haven't heard of this before. It's like the latin fusion I love added a got electric guitar and synths to create a sort of indie rock sounding sound. Anyway, you have to get into it. Unfortunately I'm not sure of the compilation CD's name because I have a burnt copy, but when I find out, i'll make sure to post it on here.
check it out guys!
GO TROPICALIA!!!

Since Tropicalia's been round since, like, the 60's, how is this a new genre discovery?
-
Oh good, Columbus here "discovered" Brazil, too.
Grab yourself some Os Mutantes and some Caetano Veloso and go to town, man.
-
Jorge Ben like woah.
You can probobly get some on these new discoveries I've made called 'CDs'.
-
im not talking about a new genre (as in completely new) -_-....im saying I - ME discovered something I hadn't heard before and thought everyone else should check out. So Tropicalia's been around for ages...so has everything else, just in different forms. What I discovered was like a mixture of rock music with brazilian/latin music.
-
you do realise that they don't have a Tropicalia section in any music stores around australia...you're wondering why im so hiped, it's because (as i freagin said before)...i have never heard of this genre until now - i even said "im new to this genre"
or something like that
in fact...whatever, lock the damn topic down if you really think it necessary...i still think people need to get into this 'old' but still 'new to myself' genre.
(i must have said genre over 100 times.................lets count :D)
-
You may not even be new to this genre if you've ever listened to Beck's Mutations, his tribute to Tropicalia.
-
-_- so clearly I haven't heard it
-
i think the closest thing I've ever heard to Tropicalia was Cal Tjader's album "Cal Tjader plays the Comtemporary Music of Brazil"...........except that's latin ('~')
-
HOLY FUCK I actually posted this in the wrong topic. Move along.

Os Mutantes are great fun. There is a larger supply of amazing psychedelic-type music from all around the world out there than you'd think. A compilation of West African psychedelia, Love is a Real Thing, was released recently and it's just spectacular.
Kaleidoscope (the Mexican one from the '60s) is worth a look, too, though they're not too acidy.
