Since we've had these for basically every other instrument, we should one for the bass.
I am fully aware that this is going to turn into a Les Claypool thread, but who cares?

Doe - Mobstar (I have no idea what his last name is, but he is an awesome shred machine. I just wish I'd gotten to Billy Sheehan before anyone else did though :()
And last but not least, Paul Mccartney. I know his early post-beatles stuff sucked, but almost everything he did with the Beatles was fantastic melodic bass, and some of his newer solo stuff is pretty awesome as well

Oh no. You jus had to do this. First off, I second Jaco. Honestly there are no other electric bass players out there for me. His sense of melody, rhythm, phrasing and just general musicality are just so incredible that nobody even comes close, not even Sean Malone:
Then, there's always Francis "Rocco" Prestia from Tower of Power:
Now for upright players, because that's my instrument (I play electric, but I can't do any of the extended techniques native to electric, plus I don't play it much).
The late, great Paul Chambers (even though his intonation wasn't sterling)
Ron Carter. One of the best backing guys ever (loved everything he's been behind), but I have one of his albums as a bandleader and I am not impressed. It's well-played and there's nothing really wrong with it except the fact that nothing really happens. It's almost as if he planned it to be background music.
Dave Holland. Dave Holland Quintet is one of my favorite groups ever to exist. Their Extended Play: Live at Birdland is one of my favorite albums ever.
The incredible Charles Mingus. Nothing more about him needs to be said, really.
Chris Wood from MMW is pretty good, and there's this one bass fill on A Go-Go (with John Scofield), the first track (title track) that puts him in this list with everyone else. It's that good. His solo on "Last Chance to Dance Trance, Perhaps" is probably my favorite bass solo ever, too.
Finally, the greatest classical solo bassist ever to live (in my opinion); Edgar Meyer. Find his recording of Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites. Incredible.

Props for Trewavas and Gildenlow.

I pretty much second all of Storm's and Jaco. Seriously. However, you all should be ashamed of yourselves. You all forgot about the fat bastard behind Praxis (and a good portion of Buckethead's career):
BILL LASWELL (Praxis, Solo, about 15,000,000 Collaborations, etc).
EDIT: Fuck, we forgot Geezer Butler, too! I'm totally going to post a picture:
EDIT #2: I just noticed! In that picture, Geddy Lee is wearing converse! Haha!
-
Anyone with a 6 string bass should be taken off of this list on grounds of EXTREME STUPIDITY. That's all I have to say.
-
Tony Levin and Jaco Pastorius FTW but I'll concentrate on pop muzik
First the Girls

Tina Weymouth FTW!

I didn't put Geezer on mine because frankly, I don't think he's that great of a bassist. Competent, for sure, but far from one of my favorites.
And Kai, I think you need to dig up the Informative thread and do Praxis for me. Or put up a song on Forced Listening. Whichever works.
-
I definitely put Geezer down. He's awesome. He's not scarily good, but the music that comes out of what he does is stuff I enjoy to a huge extent.
-

God, she's fat now.

I just cant believe i forgot these two bass players:
Tony Grey (Hiromi, solo, Far From Blue, David Fiuczinski Kif, Oli Rockberger Band)
I chated with him a bit after the Hiromi concert last month here. He's really a cool guy, explained to me about his basses and stuff.
Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine, Isotope, Pip Pyle's Equipe Out, solo)
I love his work on Soft Machine's Third, Forth and Fifth.
When I need to construct a bass line for a song I somtimes "steal" some of his work..
My fav' progressive rock band is Soft Machine.
-
How could I forget.

Dave Curran (Unsane)

Don't tell me you guys forgot JOEY DEMAIO (Manowar)

Because it had to be done.

More for being uber-krieg than amazing.

Scott Owen from The Living End is pretty awesome:

Joe Lally, Scott Owen, Matt Freeman: all seconded.

Crash McLarson (The Aquabats!)
Chris Bauermeister (Jawbreaker, Horace Pinker)
R: Dave Lerner (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists) (also in this picture, Chris Wilson, who is a kickass drummer)
in the back, holding the bass: Royce Nunley (ex-Suicide Machines)
and their current bassist, Rich Tschirhart, ain't bad, either:
Tsuyoshi Kawakami (Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Tsuyoshi Kawakami & His Moodmakers)
Suke (Bleach)
okay, nothing really all that flashy (except maybe Suke) but that's my list.
-
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c213/hey_there_fatty/Wataz.jpg)
Roger Waters of Pink Floyd!
-
Since Watt, Keeler, and Reeder have been used...
Greg Norton (Husker Du): rocking the 'stache, of course.

If there is a better picture to describe ´Dad Rock´ I can't think of it.
Not that I think Hüsker Dü is dad rock

I'm not even going to say who it is.
-
In response to that, I'm going to say that Jason Newstead was good, but not anywhere near a suibtalbe replacement. Plus a lot of the songwriting awesomeness was gone, because Cliff's basslines were boss.
-
(http://festival.jazz.dk/images/cjf_2005/nhop_1_lille.jpg)
I like(d) NHØP.
And, Larry Graham. Saucesome, that's what he is.
-

Yeah, Jason Newstead doesn't get nearly enough recognition. He's a good bassist, but he's constantly measured by how much worse he is than Cliff.
-
I think it's shameful no-one's hit up any psychobilly yet.
Jeff Roffredo (Tiger Army)
Mark Burnett (The Meteors) on the right. Can't find a good photo of him in action, dammit. The Meteors site has all their band pics on flash.

Eric Wilson of Sublime.

Mike Gordon of Phish (obviously on the left!)
-
Flea of RHCP (Did someone seriously forget him?)
The word "forget" implies that we would have put him on. I mean, Flea is competent in a world where few bassists are, as a result, he is worshipped as a god, when really he's merely acceptable. I'm glad he's out there sticking up for the bass, but on the other hand, he's not really doing anything special.
-
I know he's overrated, but he is still a skilled player and brought a lot of attention to bass when lots of the public still thought we played a few repeated notes while the guitar shredded.
-
What with his damn Motorhead cover band and all, how could I forget,
(http://www.agathodaimon.de/images/immortal.jpg)
Abbath Doom Occulta (Immortal, Bombers)
-
Sorry but that's a really unflattering pic of Kim Deal

better.
-
I'm now afraid of posting who I was going to, figuring I'll be shunned off by music snobs. There are all of 4 guys I recognize in this thread.
-
Sorry but that's a really unflattering pic of Kim Deal
better.
Yeah I wanted to find one from the early days. Unfortunately I'm lazy.
-
I'm now afraid of posting who I was going to, figuring I'll be shunned off by music snobs. There are all of 4 guys I recognize in this thread.
Go for it. I've only heard of a few others besides mine.

Well, okay.
Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave)
-
I actually really like his bass playing. It's real simple, and real groovy.
-
Damn, how could I forget Timmy C?
Great bass player, I really like his work with RATM.
-
Looking back over the thread, I noticed Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister. I am reminded that he is quite possibly the UGLIEST man to ever live.
-
Agreed there 100%
-

morgan henderson-the blood bros(pictured playing bass keyboard)
-
How can you have a bass thread and not mention Victor wooten?
(http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/1374/apt0211ec.th.jpg) (http://img470.imageshack.us/my.php?image=apt0211ec.jpg)
Edgar Meyer as well is fantastic, I second whoever said him before.
And of course Jaco.
-
You're right. Shame on you guys for not mentioning him! I avoided pretty much any electric bass players, except those who are rediculously overlooked (Rocco).
