I'm looking for suggestions for a happy mix. Songs for a perfect 80 minute album of pure happiness. Basically Indie, Classic Rock, Hip-hop. Not too much into metal or anything heavy, but twee is good (for a happy mix? gotta be twee).
-
Magic Bus by the Who. This is not negotiable.
-
Tullycraft- pretty much anything but I'm thinking of Stowaway and Our Days in Kansas
The Flaming Lips-anything, Yoshimi, A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, Buggin'
Architecture in Helsinki-Its Five, just about anything else
Anything by the Go! Team
The Thrills-Big Sur (which is their only good song so it won't be hard to find)
The Stereophonics-Have a Nice Day
Daft Punk-Digital Love
And finally and most importantly
Kylie Minogue-Love at First Sight
Also, I think you should inlude metal...at least I don't think I'm the only one who finds the raspy death metal screaming giggle-inducing.
-
Hey. No sarcasm here. lol.
I'm just saying it seems like there are a lot of people who like bands like Opeth and junk on this forum, and I don't appreciate that kinda stuff at all. I like your suggestions though. A+
-
The Polyphonic Spree are almost frighteningly happy. Nobody should be that cheerful all the time.
Most of Primal Scream's Screamadelica is pretty happy, too (largely because most of the members of the band, Bobby Gillespie in particular, were fucked on E at the time: since then they've gotten kinda angry and bitter), though there are some more sombre songs.
Just about anything happy hardcore (well, duh, I suppose), but that's almost sickeningly saccharine and agonisingly girly. As someone somewhere (I think it might have been Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music) said, "this stuff is so childish I feel like a pædohpile listening to it".
"One Nation Under a Groove" by Funkadelic, "Pocket Calculator" by Kraftwerk, "On the Tower" by Sondre Lerche and "24 Hour Party People" by the Happy Mondays (though, again, that's probably more "fucked on E" than strictly "happy") are also some suggested songs.

The Velvet Underground - I'm Sticking With You. It makes me smile like an idiot whenever I hear it. I love Moe Tucker's voice.
Something from the Katamari Damacy soundtrack. Which one is up to you, but you must have a Katamari Damacy song.
Pixies - I've Been Tired. Maybe not the kind of happy song you're looking for, but it makes me smile. Another Pixies song that might be good is Brick is Red. Again, maybe not what you're looking for, but it's worth mentioning.
The Ramones also had some good happy songs. I'd second California Sun, but I also recommend Oh Oh I Love Her So, Rockaway Beach, Sheena is a Punk Rocker, She's the One, and Rock 'n Roll High School.
Edit: All right, it had been too long since I listened to Surfer Rosa, I think. Scratch Brick is Red. Stormy Weather or Havalina might be good though.
-
Voxtrot (http://www.myspace.com/voxtrot)
I recommend "Raised by Wolves".
(Their profile says "Think Love plus Left Banke" and clearly Love is the best band ever, so anything compared to them is better than most things)
The Pogues-Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
pretty much any Of Montreal song, for lo-fi goodness go for Let's Do Everything for the First Time Forever, or Disconnect the Dots for danceydancedance stuff.[/url]

The Aquabats - Red Sweater. pinnacle of happiness.
edit: oh yeah, also, "Don't steal our sun" by The Thrills. not sure if it was said already, but it's a must
-
Donovan - There Is A Mountain ... I have never heard a song as happy and playful and willing to be your bestest friend ever as this one.
Queens of the Stone Age covered "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" by the Kinks. It's more drug-happy than genuinely happy, but it can still get the job done.
I get inexplicably perfect vibes from Ramona Cordova's music. It is really indescribable. http://profile.myspace.com/ramonacordova

one should never underestimate the power of terrible euro-dance to lift the spirits (see: Special D - Come With Me).
-
The happiest song is "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits.
-
"Panda Panda Panda" - Deerhoof
Pretty much all Flaming Lips
Even more all of The Polyphonic Spree
-
I apparently made one of these mixes a while back, and I recently found the disc. I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking with some of them, how I judged them to be great and/or happy but meh.

Maybe some of the choices were ironic, if only I could remember how I justify stuff that I do
after I do it.
-
I'd have to put "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers Band on any "happy" list.
-
I'm hanging on to my suggestions of Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky" & Mint Royale feat. Lauren Laverne's "Don't Falter" from the "I heart twee" thread & I'm not letting them go. :P
Also, in no order:
- Alice Coltrane: "Satvaya"
- Gilberto Gil (& Os Mutantes?) - "Bat Macumba"
- 4Hero's version of John Coltrane's "Naima" (or the original, either which one)
- Stars as Eyes - "Golden Experience"
- Gogol Bordello - "Start Wearin' Purple" (please don't shoot. calm down. put the gun down, let's talk about this...)
- All Night Radio - "Fall Down Seven"

- Jamie Lidell - "When I Come Back Around"
- Roisin Murphy - "If We're In Love"
that helpful? ;)
-
I was thinking, hey, this thread needs some Primus.
Then I realized they don't really have any 'happy' songs per se.
Maybe Amos Moses or Wynona's Big Brown Beaver?
-
Also, I think you should inlude metal...at least I don't think I'm the only one who finds the raspy death metal screaming giggle-inducing.
Finntroll.
Ok, ok, some serious suggestions (what, Finntroll isn't serious?)
The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience
Glukoza
Gorillaz
-
Finntroll.
I refuse to believe the acoustic version of 'Forsvinn Du Som Lyser' (Begone You Who Shine) wouldn't bring a smile to anyone's face.
Ultimate feel-good metal bands are Korpiklaani ('Wooden Pints', 'Beer Beer', 'You Looked Into My Eyes' and especially 'Man Can Go Even Through the Grey Stone' are just ridiculously upbeat), Finntroll, the right Skyclad (How could 'Any Old Irony?' not put a grin on your face: "If life hands us lemons, we'll make lemonade!")...hell, any upbeat folk metal. I prance round my room to Waylander and shit like that, but that's not happy per se.
-
You seriously have to put "Electricity" by Apoptygma Berzerk and/or "Shrimp" by Mr. Scruff on there. Fuckin' musical Prozac.

I second the Mr. Scruff notion, and also reccoment the Blackpool Roll and Come On Grandad.
Of Montreal - Spoonful of Sugar
The Aquabats - Martian Girl!
Anything that Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer does
Big D and the Kids Table - Little Bitch
The Mr. T Experience - And I Will Be With You
The Pietasters - Wasted
Steely Dan - Reeling in the Years
Reel Big Fish - The Kids Don't Like It
