Go on, name some of your favourite side projects, who they're to the side of.
Why's it different to the 'other band'? Is it better than the 'other band'?
Sometimes, I don't see the point of side projects, they sound an awful lot like the artist's other bands. Though I suppose it's an excuse to release more of the same for artists who can't stop writing.
That said, I would love it if somebody could hook me up with some kc accidental.
Am I being too obvious here?
-
I'm going to go with the obvious and say the Postal Service - side project for Ben Gibbard (DCFC) and the DNTEL guy (sorry, don't know his name and I'm too lazy to look it up). Oh, and I think Jenny Lewis does the backup vocals?
Also, another obvious one, Broken Social Scene, which is a side project for just about every indie musician in Canada (I swear, they're like the borg)
edit: the members of Broken Social Scene that I can think of that have main projects off the top of my head are Feist, Emily Haines and James Shaw from Metric, and Amy Millan and Torquil from Stars.
-
I think Jackson United is one of the best side projects ever. Foo Fighter guitarist Chris Shiflett makes sun-soaked, anthemic guitar-pop. It's gorgeous.
-
Tomahawk.
Mike Patton's side project with John Stanier (Helmet), Kevin Rutmanis (Melvins) and Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard)
Althogh I'm a huge fan of Patton, this is my favorite side project of his.
I have thier Second Album, and its absolutly amazing.
Mix's electronic music, with metal, grunge, Faith No More stuff like Angel Dust, King for a Day, and Album of the Year, and ofcourse - Patton's insane vocals.
Their albums are released on Patton's lable Ipecac (http://www.ipecac.com/main.php)

-
Yeah, Tomahawk are pretty rad. And since we're on the subject of Patton collabarations I have to mention Fantomas. Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), Buzz Osbourne (The Melvins) and Mike Patton teaming up to make some f'ed up noise.
-
A Perfect Circle comes to mind... then Postal Service...
I also really enjoy Imogen Heap's solo stuff. Just as long as she goes back to Frou Frou after.
-
Spencer Krug's (The funny sounding singer from Wolf Parade) side project Sunset Rubdown is pretty good.
Dan Boeckner's (Wolf Parade's other singer) old band Atlas Strategic is also good. Pretty much everything those guys have done has been good.
Ugly Casanova is nice if you like Modest Mouse's vocals when you're in the mood for something softer and not as crazy.

HARMONIA
(http://www.krautrockgroup.com/AlbumCovers/Deluxe.jpg)
Krautrock's first real supergroup, featuring members of Cluster and Neu!, really struck a great medium between the backgrounds of the two constituent groups. Check out Deluxe, pictured above.
LA DUSSELDORF
(http://www.krautrockgroup.com/AlbumCovers/LaDusseldorf.jpg)
Another Neu! side project with Michael Rothrer and Klaus Dinger. Released three albums in the late 70s to early 80s: Dusseldorf (pictured above), Vivo, and Individuellos. They've recently been reissued in Japan and can be found Stateside, so I recommend La Dusseldorf to any Neu! fan.
PURPLE CONFUSION
(http://www.m-la-music.net/IMG/arton429.jpg)
This French electronic rock side-project includes the former and current members of M83, Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzales, as well as the head of Gooom Records, Jean-Philippe Talaga. Check out Villeneuve's vocal remix of their "Return to Nassau" for a much more dance-oriented sound than you usually hear from Gooom artists.
STARDUST
(http://www.kennethhash.com/reel/images/stardust.jpg)
Does anyone remember the single "Music Sounds Better With You" from the late 90s? You know, the video with the metalface dudes who talk to the little kid through the TV? Well that was the work of Thomas Bangalter, one-half of Daft Punk. I haven't been able to get this song out of my head in SEVEN MOTHERFUCKING YEARS. More of the same excellent disco/house that they would later perfect on Discovery.
OOIOO
(http://ideashak.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/ooioo.jpg)
Yoshimi P-We's break from the Boredoms and fighting pink robots took her to the front of this tribal pop band. Often accused of following the Boredoms' recent sonic trajectories, I think this actually shows the influence Yoshimi exerts/exerted on the band. In any case, this is the most fun non-bubblegum Japanese music I can think of. Go buy or illegally download Green and Gold.
THE FUCKING AM
(http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/nescience716/fucking_am.jpg)
When the Fucking Champs and Trans AM's first collaboration EP came out, it was called "TransChamps". Naturally, the second time around...
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
(http://www.elephant6.com/photo/circulatory/medium/circulatory11.jpg)
Hey Will Cullen Hart, what happened to the Olivia Tremor Control?? What's that?! Bill Doss left, you made your music meditative and patient without losing your pop sensibilities? And then you renamed your band The Circulatory System?!
Wait wait wait... you're now saying Olivia Tremor Control is still around and Circulatory System is just a SIDE PROJECT?! Sweet Jesus!!
ERASURE
(http://www.suite101.com/files/articles/98000%5C98020/Erasure.jpg)
BEST SPINOFF SINCE MORK & MINDY
PS: Vince Clarke (left) is former Depeche Mode and Yaz(oo). That's why Erasure kind of qualifies. Whatever, Erasure should go on ANY superlative list.
TIN MACHINE
(http://www.connollyco.com/discography/tin_machine/tinmachine.jpg)
Tin Machine was... wait a tic. How the hell did this shit get in here?! DAMN YOU DAVID BOWIE!!
-
Postal Service, A Perfect Circle, Analords (Aphex Twin), Gentle Waves (essentially Belle and Sebastian), Gorillaz, Death Cab for Cutie (originally) Reindeer Section (glasgow's version of Broken Social Scene, although it may have existed earlier)
-
My favorite all time side project is Tim Kasher's The Goodlife (his main band being Cursive).
That being said Rob Crow has some interesting evolutionary bands, though i'm not sure that they are side projects per se.
Finally Carl Newman's solo project is wonderful, though i do love the New Pornographers.
-
I also really enjoy Imogen Heap's solo stuff. Just as long as she goes back to Frou Frou after.
the question arises: Is Imogen Heap's solo stuff the side project, or is Frou Frou the side project? Imogen released a solo album years before she was part of Frou Frou
-
Are the Analord piece things still considered a side project if it's the same one guy? Because if so, then yes.
Ambeon/Star One/Other Arjen Lucassen projects.
Pretty much every Mike Patton thing ever: His John Zorn collaborations, Tomahawk, Fantomas, his two solo albums (Adult Themes of Voice is amazing), X-Ecutioners, etc.
Bruce Dickinson's Solo work
Pretty much every Bill Laswell project ever.
Buckethead (Technically he was in the Deli Creeps first). And Death Cube K, Praxis, Giant Robot, and many other little things.
Les Claypool Side projects (Sausage, Frog Brigade, Holy Mackerel, Bucket of Bernie Brains, etc.)
Fugazi.
John Petrucci/Liquid Tension Experiment
Various John Zorn things.
TECHNICALLY, Motorhead is a side project of Lemmy's from Hawkwind. Kinda-maybe.
-
the question arises: Is Imogen Heap's solo stuff the side project, or is Frou Frou the side project? Imogen released a solo album years before she was part of Frou Frou
Well, I've always found it hard to consider a solo artist's band work the side project unless it's like The Bens.
Needless to say, I prefer her Frou Frou stuff more, but that's just me.
-
Rumbleseat
The Killing Tree
Armalite
-
Kai, your list is good, but you're forgetting the bloody obvious one:
DEMONS & WIZARDS.
-
Team Sleep.
A trip hop project by Chino Moreno (Deftones) DJ Crook and a guitarist friend of Moreno called Todd Wilkinson.
Basically, they sound like the bastard love child of Deftones's White Pony album and Massive Attack. And it sounds great.
Realesed only one album though, but its well worth the money.

Red Sparowes.
A weird sludge/metal/post-rock/instrumental band with Bryant Clifford Meyer (Isis), Josh Graham (Neurosis), Greg Burns, Andy Arahood (Angel
Hair) and David Clifford.
Their album is toatlly instrumental, in the vein of bands like Isis, Neurosis, Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky.
Creating soundscapes thath describes the destruction of earth. A kind of Ambient Metal, if you will.
Their album is realesed in several versions, with one or two songs different in each.
-
faraquet was the best side project ever IMO, but then again im weird!
hey spinless i can hook you up with some KC if you want.
they are amazing...
-
Sharks Keep Moving!
-
Did I forget them? I'm pretty sure I mad e it painfully clear to myself to include them. Shoot me, plzkthx
-
Also, another obvious one, Broken Social Scene, which is a side project for just about every indie musician in Canada (I swear, they're like the borg)
Bacically BSS and the New Pornographers include the entire Canadian music scene...
Not really a side project because Q and Not U aren't together anymore but I just got Ris Paul Ric's Purple Blaze. Its pretty good but nothing at all like his old band. Its almost classical guitar-post rock at times. Very good though.
-
OH, Lucky Nine.

PURPLE CONFUSION
(http://www.m-la-music.net/IMG/arton429.jpg)
For a moment I thought those were umlauts above the P and the T, and I thought "Yeah, it doesn't get any more rock 'n' roll than unnecessary and nonsensical umlauts." Now I'm kind of disappointed.
-
That's the French for ya, disappointing you with their lack of interesting diacritics.
-
I always thought that The Rentals were far better then that other band (weezer... pfft!) that Matt Sharp was in. Moog? Volin? Female Haromnies? Crunchy guitar? Yes please!
