Post by: Kross on 09 Mar 2006, 12:06
So I plan on buying some new music soon, I just need suggestions.  I want to get The Decemberists' "Castaways and Cutouts", "Picaresque" and possibly something else.  I also want to get Mogwai's "Mr. Beast".

Suggestions on what else to get?  I want to get atleast 4-5 CDs. :)

Broken Social Scene by Broken Social Scene, Jeph is right, it is truly excellent, I'd also say if your going to get Castways and Cutout and Picaresque, you may look for Her Majesy or Five Songs, both good albums.

Castaways and Cutouts is my favourite Decemberists album, bar none.

Get Mogwai's Young Team before Mr. Beast.

I prefer BSS's You Forget it in People over their self-titled.

How about The Meadowlands by the Wrens?

CYHSY. Funeral. Feels. I'm Wide Awake It's Morning. The Remote Part. Neon Golden. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Otis Redding Live in Europe. Now Here is Nowhere. Agaetis Byrjun. Apologies to the Queen Mary. Illinois.

Think I'm done.

We desperately just need to make a sticky'd Music Forum Rec list, to compliment Jeph's... including prog, metal, etc.

You mean, "You Forgot it in People".  It's the BSS album to get.

I'm tempted to be that guy who lists a bunch of industrial/ebm/noise bands just to look cool when it's clearly what you're not looking for, but since you seem to be out to buy indie CDs... I'll resist the temptation and just tell you to pick up "Tyranny of Distance" by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists. :)

I don't understand why everyone loses it over the Decemberists. My friend gave me his copy of Picaresque and I had previously listened to their other material and I find them kind of dull. Could somebody explain to me what is so special about them?

Whatever indie kids, Brian Eno's Another Green World is essential.

I second this, though I still haven't forgiven you for the hurtful things you've said about Mr. Mangum

I think Colin Meloy enunciates too clearly to sound like a pirate.

Yes but "Shake the Sheets" is a better album, imo.

He also has explicitly rejected the pirate label. The Decemberists make nice songs but the special thing about them is that they all tell fairly intricate stories. I think its more the narrative format that the impressive part of their music.

Plus, they put on one hell of a live show.

Update: I'm finally getting my music on tomorrow.  I decided to go with Kirbo's suggestion and get Castaways and Cutouts, Picaresque, Five Songs and Her Majesty.

I should probably pick some alternates, incase the place I'm going to doesn't have some of the above.  Suggestions?  I'm thinking Mogwai and possibly BSS.

I would suggest Socialisme ou Barbarie, by Monade.  Damn, I love that album.  It really depends on whether or not you like Stereolab.  If you do, and like their more loungy, laid-back-in-the-cut stuff, I would get it quick.  Also, if you're trying to get something "indie" and I mean indie in the sense of "the indie epoch" you should start out with "Alien Lanes" or "Bee Thousand" by Guided by Voices.  Just my opinion though.

I think the reason why a lot of people don't like the Decemberists is the same reason why a lot of people don't like many good bands--they were hypped WAY TOO MUCH.  It's decent music, why can't we just leave it at that, without trying to suck-off Colin Meloy, Pitchfork?  Can't we just do that?

Cheers,
pcp

Mr. Beast isn't great. The instrumentals on it are fantastic, but the songs with vocals on are a waste of fucking time. Especially the French one.

Well, I came away with only one Decemberist CD, Picaresque.  I ended up getting that, Mr. Beast, Broken Social Scene and the new Gorillaz album.

I'm rockin to Decemberists right now.  So rockin. :)

Hey,

I think it's been months since I bought a new release, I've thought of Mr. Beast but it doesn't really thrill me when I tried it out.

How about Belle & Sebastian- the Life Pursuit?

To think about it, I may just get the Australian release of Annie's Anniemal soon. Get that too!
