'Wir Sind Helden' is group from Germany and I was wondering if people from the U.S.A. or elsewhere know them. What do you think about them and do you know other groups, who sing in german?
-
I'm from Germany so I've been exposed to their shitty hype for quite a while.
They're pop. Nothing else. They don't hurt anyone, they don't add anything to the genre and they're vastly overrated.
In short: Blah.
In general, singing in German is good, that is, if you lyrics don't suck horribly (I'm looking at you here, Rammstein). If you want good lyrics, take a look at the first Kettcar album or Turbostaat.

Einstürzende Neubauten is about the only german band that sing in german I listen to.
However it makes up for all the bilge water that have come out of Germany, such as schlager "kings" like Freddy Breck(which is appropriately very close to vomit in Danish), Die Toten Hosen, Scorpions etc.
Tocotronic is also good solid indie rock, and then there is all the electronica.
-
Unheilig are awesome and sing in German but I don't know if the lyrics are as awesome as the music because I don't speak German :D
Listen to Unheilig anyway, they're like Rammstein if Rammstein was still a good band.
-
yea, as already said, the first album by kettcar, and of course tocotronic. then maybe tomte, olli schulz und der hund marie and some hip hop like eins zwo. and such a surge! how could i forget?
-
I think that they were very courageous with the 2nd album. there's a lot on it that sounds like they made it just because they didn't want to be the ever-loved charts pop group. I really like the first 2 songs. can't remember the names.
the debut ep was great too. hey, it was released on supermodern records! who also released legends like Sharon Stoned or Tuesday Weld. but they just couldn't fulfill the expectations with the first album.
-
I like the song/video for gekommen um zu bleiben
but haven't heard much else by them
-
Cryptic Wintermoon.
Even though they don't sing in German.
-
I've been meaning to thank you for exposing me to Cryptic Wintermoon. The last like 45 seconds of Supersatan makes my genitals tingle.
-
eh...I think I have the very first Cryptic Wintermoon EP somewhere here. and I'm willing to sell it. if you are interested.

I'm in the Netherlands so naturally I know of a couple of German bands. Most of them I don't particularly enjoy the music all that much, but it's in German, which always amuses me:
Beatsteaks
Die Ärzte
Die Fantastischen Vier
Die Toten Hosen [reasonably good]
Farin Urlaub
Nena
Sportfreunde Stiller
Wizo
That's about all.

A friend of mine went to Germany and brought back some Wir Sind Helden. This was the second band from Germany I had ever experienced, the first being Rammstein. I was not entirely impressed by their pop-rock-y-ness. But that was a long time ago. I should try listening to them again.
But that sounds like a hell of a lot of work.

Why do newbies find it so fucking hard to have a sensibly sized avatar?

Actually, all of them suck. Especially Die Ärzte, Die Toten Hosen and Nena. Good God.
If you want some good German music, try Systral, Mörser, Acme or Japanische Kampfhörspiele. Kurt are also good at what they do.

I'm not familiar with current German music, but as far as I'm concerned, Germany's alright by the music community. If you manage Faust, Can, Neu! and Kraftwerk in the same decade, there's gotta be some kind of meme there that's just waiting in the subconcious of German artists for the next complete revolution in music, which they virtually carried out in the 70s. If it weren't for Faust, there wouldn't be a lot of American bands. Just saying.
Cheers,
pcp
-
Okay guys. You can not mention German music without mentioning Can, because they are simply the best thing to come out of Germany ever.
-
After Kraftwerk of course.
-
I don't know about Can, but there's always Tankard and Kreator.
-
Come on guys, Rammstein are fuckin awsome! Really.
-
Einstrezende Neubauten. That is all.
