Title: GRAD SONGS WHAUGHUAHGH
Post by: Johnny C on 10 Mar 2006, 17:49
I graduate from high school this year. We are selecting a grad song this week. I don't want to sit idly by as a shitty song represents my class.

HELP!

I need ideas for songs that relate to four formative years of adult life, in a positive way. If I recieved said ideas, that would be GREAT.

Feel free to share what song the morons in YOUR graduating class voted for. Unless you say "Good Riddance" or "Graduation." In which case I feel nothing but pity for your classmates.

If you pick "Time of your Life" for the little "hey guys, let's look back at our high school time guys!", I will pretty much have to kill you.

Yeah, they chose "Good Riddance" for ours. I mean, God, can you get any more clichéd?

Also, the poorly edited "nostalgic" iMovie presentation shown to us said "their have been good times and their have been bad times". Hooray for education.

I think my highschool did do "Time of your life" for my graduation... can't remember.

Personally, I'd nominate Sullenoid - The Season to Come (http://www.lineabassa.it/sullenoid/mp3/season.mp3).

Well, my class used  "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion for primary (elementary?) school and "Good Riddance" for junior high. I thought "The Headmaster's Ritual" was more appropiate but I don't get to decide.

If I got my way I'd play "I'm Set Free" by the Velvet Underground for senior high school. I've so far enjoyed my stay here but I also want to get somewhere else and the lyrics (http://www.alwaysontherun.net/velvet.htm#24) reflect that with a gorgeous melody.

I love how 2 out of the 5 replies refered to Good Ridance by the wrong name...  It always makes me smile when people think it's a happy type song.  Way to be music snobs!

Anyway, I wouldn't suggest some indie craziness along the lines of Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl, but you have to have support on your choice, I'm guessing?  I'd say go with classics from the likes of Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, or Simon and Garfunkel then.  They should all have plenty of songs that'd be suitable.

If my class goes with "Good Riddance" I'll have to punch every fucking one of them in the face, that's how mad the song makes me.

I think Springsteen and Garfunkel are good suggestions. Keep them coming, guys; this represents about five minutes of my life that I want to not suck!

my class (also graduating come june) apparently had three people choose three choices at the beginning of the year.

Postal Service - Such Great Heights
Oasis - Wonderwall
Damien Rice - Cannonball

And as the "video yearbook" already has the postal service, I guess we know which will win.

Anyway, yeah, grateful good riddance wasn't mentioned, and i guess our choices arn't so bad.  I'd go for Oasis just because Such Great Heights doesn't fit at all.

Seems like there are better Postal Service songs (Nothing Better maybe?) and Oasis songs (Don't Look Back In Anger maybe?)   to represent that sentiment.  Damien Rice, well no, thats a love song.

I'm not even sure I had a graduation song.  Maybe if I looked at the video yearbook (which has my high school band's worst gig ever on it) then I'd know what it was.  Nope, still not enough justification to make me watch it.  Anyways, I'd go with Alice Cooper's "School's Out."  Yes, it's overplayed, but I don't hear it much, because I pretty much only listen to my music, and I don't even have that song.  That's why it'd be my choice.

"Nothing Better" is like a love/breakup song. The most appropriate Postal Service song for a graduation would have to be "Such Great Heights." As for Oasis... no. Dunno about Damien Rice.

Okay, how about loud, memorable indie rock anthems? I'm thinking stuff like The Arcade Fire's "Wake Up," Broken Social Scene's "Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)," and Wolf Parade's "I'll Believe in Anything." Though if I had my way, we'd play Ratatat's "Seventeen Years" at our graduation. That would be totally inappropriate yet awesome.

Springsteen and Garfunkel.  They should totaly do an album together, t'would be all sorts of great.  Anyway, I'll look for some specific songs, but I'll do that in the morning.  Right now, I'm on the tired side since my caffeine is wearing off, so I need bed (well, after running through the second disk of The River and reading for a bit anyway).

Wait, what?  How does that make me a music snob?  More to the point, so what if I don't know the name to the song, it's not a song I particularly like.

So: way to be, generalizer!  Glad to know we've got some intelligence on these boards.  Now that that's done, can we agree not to flame each other again?

Back on topic, personally, I feel like I'd have to go and punch everyone in my graduating class in the face if an indie song was nominated.  More because it seemed like there was a lot of very annoying snobbery flying around than any dislike of the music.

I believe my class chose Guns N Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" for our graduation song.  Quite a nice way to usher us into the real world.  I quite enjoyed the choice of the class above mine, which was Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage" / "Eclipse", the closers on Dark Side of the Moon.  Just about the only time I could think of Dark Side of the Moon being played in both novel and appropriate context.  Besides, of course, the Dark Side of the Rainbow... but hey, you're usually stoned when you're watching that anyway and so pretty much anything is novel and appropriate.

Why I slept through Grad?

Our song was 'Complicated' by Avril Lavigne? That made me lose all faith in humanity.

I would say Blowin in the Wind by Bob Dylan, Ahead by a Century by The Tragically Hip, My Generation by the Who,  We are the Champions by Queen.

For mine I got sent to the office (Which I never arrived at) for saying "You know guys, there's no reason we have to pick some bullshit pop tune. We could choose a song that means something."

Seriously, Complicated? I'd take Good Riddance any day.

It's probably wrong to suggest 'Lord Abortion'?

I have to be honest and say that this is the first time ever I've seen anyone mention a graduation song. We don't do that over here. And I feel lucky because of it. I gather that this song is supposed to remind you of the great times you've had whilst in school?

Aren't those two a bit of a cliche?

Anyway, I'd want it to be something weird if I ended up having to choose something like this. Maybe "Things Have Changed?" by Lucky Nine, partly for the title, partly for the irony of making people's ears bleed instead of making their eyes leak.

I've narrowed it down to Springsteen's "Glory Days" (ironic but hell if my graduating class will know the difference), Tragically Hip's "Ahead By A Century" (that suggestion was bad-ass, thanks for it) or The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights." Keep the suggestions coming, though, guys.

I'm not going for indie snob grad stuff here - I write for Stylus and therefore contractually have to enjoy pop music. I just want a song that doesn't suck.

Agreed. I can't decide what's worse: having your high school years defined by a shitty Avril Lavinge song or having one of your favouite songs soiled into cliche by it being used to define your high school years.

Having said that, 'Glory Days' by Bruce Springsteen would be awesome. I vote for that!

Alternatively, because you love everyone at school so much (I bet), how about Tenacious D - Friendship?

Anyway, some more specific song suggestions:

Bruce Springsteen - Growin' Up
Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Fire (No clue why it'd work, but it's just a great song)
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

  And some other randomness

Stars - One More Night (Your Ex-Lover is Dead)
Wolf Parade - I'll Believe in Everything

Yeah, those'll do for now, I suppose.

I wasn't even allowed at my graduation for various reasons, but I am absolutely certain they played Good Riddance. This is an empirical certainty. There is no possible way they didn't play Good Riddance. The worst part was, most people at my school had OK taste in music, but they chose Good Riddance because that was just the song you played at Graduation.

I am actually pretty glad I wasn't allowed to go, because they didn't register people who skipped out on it without a good reason as having graduated, so I still got a diploma, and I didn't have to sit through that goddamned song, and I didn't have to wind up in hospital or anything.

Personally, if it had been upto me, I would have chosen "A Hard Earned Thirst Needs a Big Cold Beer, But I Drink To Get Pissed" by TISM, because that song pretty much describes Graduation night, and it would look awesome played over shots of kids running out from the school hall, and shots from the chaotic parties that ensued, if we were in a Teen movie or something.

My girlfriend got Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This." I couldn't help but lipsynch and make overly dramatic hand motions while we danced. I made her laugh and it's a fairly memorable moment for me.

Er... I was going to say that you should just pick a really awful song that you can make fun of but I guess grads are a much more serious occasion for some people than others.

I always though "Thirteen" by Big Star would've made a great grad song (or the Elliott Smith cover...).

"Silver Road" by Sarah Harmer would make a really good one.

If you really want to depress the hell out of everyone, "Names" by Cat Power. (Don't actually use this one.)

If we had a graduation song I don't remember it. Since you probably need to convince kids at you schools of your choice I'd suggest some Shins (if you like them). They're all cool and what not cause of Garden State and I can definitely see a lot of their stuff (including the GS stuff) working for graduation. Thats something you could live with and probably have a decent chance convincing your classmates to agree to it.

Two other things. I think if I were you I'd want Good Riddance just so I could complain about having Good Riddance because that seems to be a really important part of graduating high school. Also, if there is a problem with the Shins try Lightening Bolt...hehehe

My graduation song was...Pomp and Circumstance.  You'd think that, as a band kid, playing it for the other graduates three years in a row, I'd feel all special for having it played for me.  Oddly enough, I couldn't wait for the experience to end.

I think mine was "American Idiot" by Greenday.

Or it was some Celine Dion song, but I do recall hearing American Idiot either at, or just before we went into Graduation.  I laughed really hard because it fit MY graduating class, at least.  I mean, I had, like, a 3.2 GPA WEIGHTED, and I was in the top 20% of my graduating class.  (I would like to state for the record I could have easily had a 4.075 GPA or whatever weighted max was if I didn't stop going to school for like 6 months, ending up with a C in a bunch of classes.)

My class said "fuck you, recorded music" and had a dude in our class write an original song. Not that it was a work of art, but it's pretty cool to know that we have a completely original class song that nobody else will ever have.

Yeahhhhh.

class of 2009 did that already and the guy pretty much sucked.

Man I'll see if I can get this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdX_V4h4zH4&feature=related) at my graduation.

So will I, that'd be so awesome.
