Title: Great album endings?
Post by: The Hammered on 11 Mar 2006, 23:45
Basically what the title says. I'll list mine.

The Stooges - Fun House - L.A. Blues
I'm sure there are a lot of people who hate this one, but I think it's the perfect ending to Fun House.
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising - Death Valley '69
It's a good song all by itself, but it's mostly impressive as such a contrast to everything before it.
The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat - Sister Ray
Couldn't go without mentioning this. Damn.
The Velvet Underground - [self-titled] - After Hours
First, I adore Moe Tucker's voice. Second, this is a wonderful little song, and third, it works very well to wind the album down after "The Murder Mystery."
The Ramones - [self-titled] - I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You and Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World
Both kickass songs, and even though it's just a second of feedback, the transition between them seems very satisfying for some reason.
Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow - Duel in the Deep
It's a weird track (not even a song, really), even compared with the rest of the album, but I like it, probably for that reason. Also, the gradually fading feedback that ends it just seems to work really well. I'm not sure why.
Pixies - Bossanova - Havalina
Very sweet song, and it works really well as a closer.

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's - A Day in the Life
I guess the Beatle chatter isn't really THAT great but the crazy ascending orchestra and the powerful E chord is a good ender.

Two Headed Boy Pt 2 (NMH - ITAOTS)

I also think that Judy and the Dream of Horses (B&S - Sinister) and It's all gonna break (BSS - s/t) are two great closers. Also, The Wild Kindness (Silver Jews - American Water) is a great closer.

Green Day - Nimrod - Prosthetic Head
Pink Floyd - The Divison Bell - High Hopes
Radiohead - The Bends - Street Spirit
Nick Cave - Let Love In - Do You Love Me? (Part Two)
Nick Cave - The Lyre Of Orpheus - O Children
The Beatles - Revolver - Tomorrow Never Knows
Queen - The Works - Is This The World We Created?

Pixies - Doolittle - Gouge Away
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium - Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command - Non-Zero Possibility
Björk - Homogenic - All is Full of Love
Bonnie 'prince' Billy - I See a Darkness - Raining In Darling
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire - In Metal
Kaizer's Orchestra - Maestro - På Ditt Skift
Under Byen - Det er Mig der Holder Træerne Sammen - Om Vinteren
Under Byen - Kyst - Kyst

and the closers on Her Majesty and Picaresque are lovely little songs that round up the albums perfectly.

Immortal - Damned in Black - Damned in Black

That last riff is just...grim. Fucking grim. I always get this mental image of a lone figure, all cloaked in tattered black and fur, slowly trudging away from me through an aurora-lit blizzard. Indeed, throughout, this song creates some of the most powerful mental images I can think of from music.

Sabbat - History of a Time to Come - The Church Bizarre

"Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Skyclad - Jonah's Ark - It Wasn't Meant to End This Way

"When death is the helmsman who steers "Jonah's Ark"
Tomorrows an iceberg that lurks in the dark.
The band plays our song... it's the Funeral March."

Sol Invictus - Death of the West - In The West

Just a great, epic closer. "The sun is setting in the west..."

...and that's all I can think of for now. I'm off to the pub!

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium - Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt

Fuck, yes. That's so seconded.

Shellac - At Action Park - Il Porno Star
Shellac - Terraform - Copper
Shellac - 1000 Hurts - Watch Song
All Shellac albums have, for some reason, great closing tracks, though I would think that Copper is the most exceptional because it's by far the poppiest song Shellac have ever written.
XBXRX - Sixth In Senses - In Memory Of Our Lives
Descent into total chaos. Horrible and fascinating.
Mínus - Jesus Christ Bobby - Bonus Track
All songs of the album mashed into one, played backwards and looped. Weird.
Botch - We Are The Romans - Man The Ramparts
I like to ignore the bonus track here, I don't like it much. Plus Man The Ramparts is just one killer end for that album.

Weirdly enough, the first album that comes to mind is, of all things, Barenaked Ladies - Maroon with both the surreal "Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel" and the hidden track "Hidden Sun" which runs even softer and a little bit more hopeful. Yeah I know, it's mainstream pop. It's still damn good mainstream pop. I'm saddened that their latest album sucked so much.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, "Back and Forth" from Dismemberment Plan's Emergency and I is just freaking genius and I love it to bits.

This Heart's On Fire - Apologies to the Queen Mary - Wolf Parade
Soon - Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City - Greetings From Asbury Park, New Jersey - Bruce Springsteen
Darkness on the Edge of Town - Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen
It's All Gonna Break - Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Desolation Row - Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
Judy and the Dream of Horses - If You're Feeling Sinister - Belle and Sebastian
I Shall Be Released - Music From Big Pink - The Band
Riders on the Storm - LA Woman - The Doors
The End - The Doors - The Doors (Of course...)
A Wolf at the Door - Hail to the Theif - Radiohead
Calender Girl - Set Yourself on Fire - Stars
Only in Dreams - Weezer - Weezer
Butterfly - Pinkerton - Weezer
All the Beatles ones that have been mentioned, plus Her Majesty - Abbey Road

  That about covers it.

And worst album closer ever: A Long Day - The Beginning Stages Of... - The Polyphonic Spree

I forgot a couple, so let me add:

~ Burmese - Men - Just Say Cunt
I mean, Burmese in general is just noise and not really music, but this ... the last 30 seconds of this album are worse than everything before. It feels like you got raped.

~ Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 - 2113
I like the track and it makes for a pretty good end.

~ mclusky - mclusky Do Dallas - Whoyouknow + hidden track
...And things end with a couple of great lines, a different production and pretty pissed off. Thanks.

~ Slint - Spiderland - Good Morning, Captain
uNf. Just uNf.

And a total classic:
~ Tenacious D - Tenacious D - City Hall
Oh my, yes.

This is easy.

AC/DC, Back in Black.  Song in quetion:  Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, which is my favorite AC/DC song ever (and I like the band.)

*scans over playlist to see what else might qualify on a lesser level*

Remember, I cound these in alphabetical order, not in order I like most:

Aquabats - Fury of the Aquabats:  Theme Song! ([/i]And we sail across the ocean in a hollowed-out log[/i])

Creed - My Own Prison:  One.  (It's probably Creed's best song.)

Metallica - ...And Justice For All:  Dyer's Eve (Omfg, yes.  My favorite Metallica song.)

Stephen Lynch - The Craig Machine: D&D (Okay, I'm not sure if this technically counts because he's a stand up singing comedian, but man, this song is the funniest thing ever.)

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath - The Warning.  My favorite Sabbath track ever.
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality - Into The Void.  My second favorite Sabbath track ever.
Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum - Second Time Around.  The song plays, right?  Then ... drum solo!  Fade-in to guitar insanity!  Fade-in to more guitar insanity!  OK, now it's over.  Listen to it, you'll understand.
earthlings? - earthlings? - Triumphant March of the Buffoons.  It's like if you took the word "haunting" and made it into a song, which is of course the perfect way to end this album.
Kyuss - ...and the Circus Leaves Town - Spaceship Landing.  This song is the biggest fucking slab of awesome the 90's ever produced, and a fitting coda to Kyuss's last full album.
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley - Whitewater.  Possibly the best song they ever wrote.  Probably the one that explains them best.  A perfect ending to their best album.
QOTSA - Rated R - I Think I Lost My Headache.  One of the more gratingly cacophanous endings to an album I've ever heard, and somehow the best way this album could've ended.

The ending of Delerium Cordia clearly wins this. 20 minutes of near silence, then all of a sudden Patton yells "One, two, three four!" followed by an unpleasant scratching noise.

Other amazing endings would include Glassjaws' secret song on Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence, and Sigur Rós' Heysátan.

You can't be serious.  It's distilled Black Sabbath.  It's everythiing good about their best work put into a single song.  How can anyone calling themself a Black Sabbath song not love it?

My personal preference for The Warning isn't even a very strong one.  I just like the bluesiness and the lyrics slightly more (Also, Kyuss's cover of Into The Void is actually better than the original, which lessens the impact of it some).  I mean, Into The Void.  Jeez.

Well, that may be, but unfortunately a track having a point doesn't redeem it. Just because the point We Are All On Drugs by Weezer is making is blackly funny doesn't make the song any less shit.

I'm afraid that I think it should've ended with - appropriately enough - The End; be a much more fitting close to their career, I reckon.

Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops - Cassie Eats Cockroaches

This song almost rocks illegally hard. For me, most of the history of alternative metal in America since this point has been a vain attempt to emulate this and the miserable failure thereof.

Get the "Welcome To Sky Valley" CD. "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop" is one of the most rockin' songs in the entire universe.

Also consider picking up "Wretch", their first CD, solely for the blistering 2-minute rifftastic intro track. Josh Homme was a badass rock guitarist way before he even thought of forming a band called QOTSA. :)

The Album Leaf - In A Safe Place - Bonus Track:  I'm not sure if the track actually counts as part of "Moss Mountain Town" or not.  All I know is that the first time i heard this I didn't get it.  Finally I cranked up the volume on my speakers and heard quite possibly the best ending song ever.

B. Fleischmann - The Humbucking Coil - Aldebaran Waltz - More than ending song, B. Fleischmann managed to keep the appropriate tone and feel for every song on this album.  One of the first great releases of 2006.

That's all I got for now.

In Remote Part / Scottish Fiction - Idlewild

All time best album closer ever.

The Wrens - The Meadowlands - This is Not What You Had Planned --- Surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet.

I didn't mention it because it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. I also think Everyone Chooses Sides should have been the last track.

Erm...more light from more light by J Mascis and the Fog.
Have we said 'The good times are killing me' by modest mouse yet?

ACK! Can't believe I forgot this one...it's my favourite ending ever.

CURSIVE: THE UGLY ORGAN-STAYING ALIVE.

Hell fucking yes.

Also, probably my favorite album closer is Source Tags and Codes by And You Will Know us By the Trail of Dead. It's a beautiful song, working in the melody created through the transition through Relative Ways was a great touch, especially after the transcendence of that wordless chorus. To top it all off, there's a pause, and then some chilling violins.

What a beautiful album. The last three songs together are the best part.

The song "Staying Alive" off of "The Ugly Organ" by Cursive... one of the coolest endings ever.

That... that makes so much sense. Wow.

"Love, Reign O'er Me" by the Who is a pretty damned awesome closer to a pretty damned awesome concept album. Pete Townshend probably never wrote a finer song.

Quadrophenia is without a doubt the greatest album they produced; screw Who's Next.

Paramore- All We Know Is Falling- My Heart

The screaming at the end is cliched, but it's still a great song by itself, and although the entire album doesn't seem to have any concept of any kind, it still makes the whole thing feel complete. Stopping on 'Franklin' always made the whole cd sound stupid.

Boys Night Out- Trainwreck- Dying

Just perfect. The whole 'doctor-talking-into-his-little-tape-recorder' angle was great. A wonderful way to complete a great concept album.

I'd argue Tommy is better, but I love both.

Quadrophenia is the better movie.

I guess I have a lot of favorite ones...so ill just get to the ones i remember right now, lets see:

sonic youth - washing machine: the diamond sea
I think this was the best way to end this crazy experimental album, with a 19 minutes song that gets to the heart.

kashmir - zitilites: zitilites
not a very original album, but it has some prety good songs... and this song adds a little something to the end.

radiohead - pablo honey: blow out
many people doesnt like this album, I found it to be one of the best from radiohead...and this song happens to be my favorite radiohead song.

matts gustafson & sonic youth with friends : hidros 3
the hole album is a 64 minutes song, recorded live and it was an inprovisation with lyrics by kim gordon......from begining to end the music is all confusing with some amazing changes trough the song, and that´s pretty much it..... altough, it´s ´retty hard to enjoy this record.

guess that would be about it :)

Not to mention the mind-scrambling "never could be any other way".
my mom thought the cd was skipping when we heard that years ago. because apparently neither of us ever heard the album in full until cd's came out.

I'd have to say:

The Who- Who's Next- Won't Get Fooled Again
Radiohead- The Bends- Street Spirit (Fade Out)
Radiohead- Amnesiac- Life in a Glasshouse
Weezer- Weezer (Blue)- Only in Dreams
AFI- Sing the Sorrow- ...But Home is Nowhere (Hidden Track in particular)
Alkaline Trio- Good Mourning- Blue in the Face
Boston- Boston- Let Me Take You Home Tonight
Queen- Innuendo- The Show Must Go On
Queen- Hot Space- Under Pressure

And Radiohead's other albums have good enders too, but those just stick out in my mind. As for "Under Pressure," it shall be summed up this way:
Queen + Bowie = Awsome

Love Reign O'er Me.  YES.

Won't Get Fooled Again is good, but Love Reign O'er Me is just fucking insane after listening to the rest of Quadrophenia (which I haven't done in a while, because for some reason it depresses me).

Dunno if these have been mentioned, but:

-The Streets- A Grand Don't Come for Free- Empty Cans
-Animal Collective- Feels- Turn Into Something
-Arcade Fire- Funeral- In the Backseat
-Belle and Sebastian- If You're Feeling Sinister- Judy and the Dream of Horses

Worst album ending- Neutral Milk Hotel- On Avery Island- Pree-Sisters Swallowing A Donkey's Eye.
Seriously.  What is this?

Opeth - Blackwater Park - Blackwater Park

Twelve minutes of GRAAAAAAAH AWESOME.

Also, I second Animal Collective's Turn Into Something.  Great closer.

Sorry if someone's mentioned this already, but I didn't read the whole thread.

Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica - "What People are Made Of"
Just a great way to end the album, with the last line, "THEY AIN'T MADE OUT OF NOTHING BUT WATER AND SHIT!  ALRIIIIIIIGHT!"  And an awesome album comes to an end.

Very good track. I loved how different it was from the rest of the album.

What I thought was a very very cool ending was Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice On Ice" on Lonesome Crowded West. I was very moved by that track, actually.

broken social scene - its all gonna break from broken social scene
the horns make for such a huge finale

kyuss - whitewater from sky valley
one of my favourite 5 songs... just the moment when that huge rolling riff kicks in near the start of the song WOW

corrosion of conformity - in the arms of god from in the arms of god
the riff heavy riffs after peppers scream near the end, perfect.

far - waiting for sunday from water & solutions
a beautiful way to drift away at the end of the album. its also possibly my single favourite album.

sigur ros - popplagið from ( )
brilliant tense coiling build up before it finally lets loose. the last 5 minutes are better than pretty much the rest of the album.

metallica - damage inc from master of puppets
easily one of their best songs in my opinon

jeff buckley - dream brother from grace
         beautiful

emperor - inno a satana from in the nightside eclipse
im not sure why but i know it works

Soap, I thought that that song, damage inc, was an abomination on the face of that album.  It was just utterly worthy of desposition.

THERE IS NO SONG AFTER IMMORTALITY!

Sonic Youth - s/t - The Good and the Bad
Awesome song, and the song itself has an awesome ending too.
And I'm not sure if I posted this already, but: Ramones - Road to Ruin - It's a Long Way Back to Germany
And not really an album (unless you have the soundtrack, which I ought to get some time), but I must list it: Katamari Damacy - Katamari of Love. FUCKING AWESOME.

Mr. Bungle- Goodbye Sober Day [California]
The most outright insane song they ever did. Death Metal, calypso and Balinese monk chants. Oh my oh my.

Fugazi- KYEO [Steady Diet Of Nothing]
An album of slow grinders until this track. Like the theme song to some giant japanese robot battle.

Bob Dylan- Desolation Row [Highway 61 Revisted]
A ten-minute Ginsberg adventure- just one man with a guitar and harmonica.

Shellac- Watch Song [1000 Hurts]
In which Steve Albini finally loses it and challenges you to fisticuffs.

And the obvious 'uns.

The Who- Won't Get Fooled Again- Who's Next?
Jimi Hendrix- Voodoo Child (Slight Return)- Electric Ladyland
Velvet Underground- Sister Ray- White Light/White Heat
Curtis Mayfield- Superfly- Superfly
The Pixies- Gouge Away- Doolittle

Too long for a first post I know. Pleased to meet ya.

For dumbass comedy value, theres a track at the end of either 'welcome to sky valley' or 'blues for the red sun' by kyuss (don't have em with me, can't remember which one) where they do a kind of lounge tune with 'i know that you can and will lick my doo-wah' as the main lyric. After an hour of stoner rock sludgery, its something of a shock.
