I'll start off

two Mac, the Mac I have before I brought the PowerBook G4 is a Pismo, 400Mhz, 512mb RAM, upgraded 4,200rpm 20GB HD, new 7 hours battery (OWC) not that heavy or big compared to modern laptop.

new PowerBook G4, brought it in February (yes I knew there's a MacBook Pro, I didn't buy it) 1.67GHz, the latest G4, brilliant machine.

If I could I would take a photo of my desktop machine, but I can't so this'll have to do:
Basically, when I was shopping for a Windows machine to use as a desktop, I was determined to get something slickly designed, as opposed to some fugly tower *cough cough dell*

My laptop is a PowerBook G4, so you already know what that looks like.  Just note that it's the first model, so it has a slightly different design for the lid/screen.  Cooler looking imo, but also more prone to snagging on stuff, which is why they changed it.

yeah you did, brilliantly fast isn't it? almost as fast as Windows now, thought it does get a tad hotter than the PowerBook, but it is a revs A, problem may occur soon.

but nice one mate! I'd get one if it wasn't for the vast application I've brought over the year which are designed for PPC computer.

Man, I cannot keep all the names straight.  Stupid names.  I mean, Microsoft's names are pretty stupid too, but at least they're easy to keep track of.  The only reason I remember the order Jaguar-Panther-Tiger is because I'm in charge of a couple G5 labs.

you should be happy, the old titanium PowerBook is actually thinner and lighter than the aluminium PowerBook.

even I want a titanium PowerBook, they're the dog's bollocks.

More double Mac laptop action!
The only reason that I keep my old iBook around is that the film scanner (you can see it peeking out between the two computers) only works with OS 10.3, not with 10.4.  Rarglfargle Minolta farble.

(woo posting pictures of computers on the Internet on a saturday woo! I'm going out in a bit, I swear)

Well, I'd post a picture, but the actual PC itself is by now a minor detail of the landscape of tangled radioactive debris that is my desk.

Actually, come to think of it, it's been three weeks since I last saw the door to this room...

And I think I may have stunned and eaten the last sock this morning...

Nice laptops!

I'm not at home to take photos at the moment, but here's a picture of my case:

Inside it I run an Athlon XP 2500 with 1gb ram & a Radeon 9800 Pro.  It's not all that current, but it runs the latest games fairly decently.  I'm looking at upgrading soon, and when I do I expect to get some kind of small formfactor box, like a Shuttle or maybe a laptop.

Note the use of the Kensington Priority Puck, for all you wooters out there.  I need to clean up at some point, but meh.  By the way, the DVDs on the left side are Farscape Starburst Edition 2.2 and Stargate season 2.  Yes, the computer is an HP, but most of it isn't from them (i.e. the RAM, the sound card, the video card and one of the hard drives).  Basically, the only main bit that's theirs is the mobo.  Hopefully I'm going to upgrade shortly, though.  It'd have to be during the summer, when I'd have time to build a computer.

First, Bastardous, Stargate = LOVE. I recently downloaded the first 7 seasons of it and am going nuts over Jack and Daniel. :D

Here is my computer. :D It is messy as is my desk and you will notice my insane amount of wires and such hooked up to my computer. My extra usb hub, and hooked up to that is my webcam, my tablet, my printer, my external hard drive, and then I have my cable connection for the internet, my mic, my headphones, and my actual battery. *amused* Packing everything takes a really long time.

Wait until ou get to LTC Mitchell (who crops up in season 9).  Ben Browder (the actor) was in Farscape and I, as a dude, think he's probably hotter.  Though, MacGyver will always win.  It's the only show where I the main character can have a mullet and still be the man.
Title: Your Computer
Post by: Jira on 19 Mar 2006, 22:17
Well, I got into it for the Jack/Daniel slash as I mentioned, and I believe I already hate Mitchell and Jonas (per urging of my friend. I'll give them a shot once I actually see them, for now, it's random discriminatory hate since apparently they "get in the way" of the love).

All I know is that WHOA SAM IS HOT. And she is the OTHER reason I watch that show.
Title: Your Computer
Post by: Bastardous Bassist on 20 Mar 2006, 05:33
Well, I guess I just have residual love for Farscape, which is probably the greatest Sci-Fi show ever made, in my opinion, and yes, I know it has some steep competition.  Probably why I also like the character of Vala a lot (also shows up in season nine).  Amanda Tapping certainly isn't bad, but I'm personally more a fan of the new doctor.

Nah, it's from some small computer outfit (www.cyberpowersystem.com) and it's called the Lan Party Special.  You can see the carrying handle on the front, although there's no way in hell I'll trust that dinky plastic hinge to hold the computer.  It's a great system, and hella cheap, just a bit bigger than I was expecting.

Honestly, i wouldn't be able to tell the difference hardware wise as the whether it was a Celeron or whatever, so it doesn't bother me so much, and since i upped the RAM, he has been running very smoothly... And yes, it is fairly easy to use, and the media buttons on the left side of the keyboard are very helpful...

And yes, i have a current naming theme with my technology... Laptop is Pintsize, PDA is Pintsize Jnr, Flash Drive is MiniPint, and the Sony Walkman HDD is StoragePint... and they have corresponding icons too...

no, i am not obsessed *shifty eyes*

EDIT: It also has fairly good sound for a laptop too, some laptop speakers are pretty shocking, although these ones are impressive..

My computer desk:

Shuttle case
P4 3.2Ghz (although it's only running at 2.8Ghz, and I can't figure out why.)
1G RAM
nvidea 6800-model video card
20.1" ViewSonic monitor (I freaking love my monitor)
Old School power strip surge protector thing that I've had forever

Powered by the vodka-rocks in the glass.

Background is a pretty cool program called Desktop Earth (http://codefromthe70s.org/desktopearth_dl.asp). It automatically updates with what the earth looks like at that given minute. As I took this picture around 10pm CST last night, my monitor looks half-dark. You can see lights from cities when you look at the monitor, but not in this picture.

Next computer I build will be a full-size tower. While I love the size and compactness of my shuttle case, the thing isn't too configurable. I can't change the power supply, there's only one fan, and the thing gets freaking hot when I'm playing a graphics-intense game.
Title: Your Computer
Post by: nihilist on 21 Mar 2006, 08:54
Heh, you're switching to a tower, and I'm switching away.  I hate the amount of space towers take, and the general noise they make.  Never mind that lifting them sucks ass.

My XPC has a 350W PSU in it, so I cannot complain.  They also put some fans in the back that blow air towards the front where another fan then sucks it out the side.  It also helps that I have the AC blowing directly on it at all times.

Shuttle Cases are awesome.  Sure, they're trouble if you have a stack of expansion cards you can't bear to part with, and they're a spell toasty if you have a 7800 and an A64-FX2 in it, but you can't beat the form factor.  And they're pretty stable/reliable.

P4 3.2Ghz (although it's only running at 2.8Ghz, and I can't figure out why.)

Can you fiddle with the multiplier settings in the BIOS config?

I, of course, don't have one.  My current ride is an Athlon XP 2800+, Radeon 9500 (minspec for Oblivion!), 768MB of DDR333; all housed in a poorly-modified circa-1998 $40 steel case.
Viewport is a 19" Iiyama VisionMaster 450, a truly amazing CRT that is unfortunately showing signs of impending doom.
I also have an IBM (oldschool, in other words) Thinkpad T23, refurbished.  1.2Ghz PIII, 128mb RAM.  Great for websurfing, typing, watching movies, running DosBox, etc.   Minimalism is a virtue sometimes.  And Thinkpads are rock solid.  I've yet to experience any problems with it.  Even ran a KANOTIX LiveCD just fine.

I would gladly upgrade if I didn't have to part with $1000 in the bargain.  On the plus side, it's a nice excuse to get an XPC.

My system specs:
17" Samsung SyncMaster 171p TFT

AMD Athlon64 3000+ Venice Core cooled by a Thermalright XP-120 with a Papst 4412 F/2GLL
Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard
1GB Ram (2x512MB, Kingston)
Sapphire Radeon 9600xt Ultimate Edition (passively cooled)
Pioneer DVR-109 DVD Writer
2x200gb Seagate harddisk
ElanVital 400W psu (semi-passively cooled)
LianLi PC-6083a aluminium case

Yes, I'm somewhat obsessed with building an actively cooled, silent system.

I also have a laptop, an Acer Travelmate 292lmi. But it's nothing special, so I won't bother putting the specs here.

Here's my amazing machine, the important bits:
19" LG 1980U and 17" Samsung SyncMaster 710n

It's got a mobo (clearly), but I don't know the model (I think it's an Asus).  It's also got a DVD writer and a CD drive, but I don't know the brands or anything either.  It's an HP machine (as you can see), so I didn't pick it out or anything.

1GB RAM (2x512MB no-name brand)
ATI Radeo 9800pro
M-Audio Delta 6/6 (with Omni-Studio breakout box)
120GB Maxtor HD (HP put it in there)
160GB Seagate HD

Yeah, I'm probably going to be upgrading my computer before too long.  Hopefully work will start to pick up.  My main band is taking a couple of weeks of our weekly gig, but it doesn't pay much anyways.  I'm not getting any freelance gigs either.  *sigh*  Maybe after my recital.

No, actually, it's pretty heavy (~3kg), ugly and has the CD on the side. I want a new one. But small laptops tend to be expensive.
But right now, Sony's SZ1 looks damn promising.

small laptop that pretty cheap nowaday, I mean you can find a 12inch widescreen that does 1280x800, DVD dual layer, 60GB, 128mb radeon or intel, 1GB of ram, 2.2kg for only £700

I know. I guess I should rephrase that: I want a decent gpu not manufactured by Intel, a Core Duo, 13,3" or 14" screen with 1280x800 or higher resolution, 4 hours or more battery life and no TPM. These things are rare and expensive.

They are?  Sounds like my Dell 600m.  14.1" (1400x1050), ATI Radeon, 1GB RAM, DVD writer, 60GB HD.  Cost me $3300 (with a huge discount since a Dell employee snagged it for me) then, costs like $1500 now.

Thank god I got the "you come and fix things for me" warranty.  It has a new motherboard, new HD, new display, new keyboard, new touchpad/wrist rest.  Just need to replace the CPU and RAM, and it's a brand new laptop.

£1900?? bilmey that's a lots compared to laptop in today standard, there's 15inch laptop that has a straggering 1920x1200 resolution for less than that DELL nowaday.

my perfect laptop is either, a Sony Vaio 13.3inch widescreen or the new MacBook/MacBook Pro that hopefully are widescreen (10-13inch either way doesn't matter) and affordable.

I like it because it's old enough to run the older games that I have, but just barely new enough to run Adobe Illustrator CS. I probably won't bother upgrading it.

I'll upload some pictures of it when I get home. I guarantee you that my chassis is better than any of the other ones I've seen in this thread so far.

This is way late to the party, I know, but here we go anyways.

Mine:

'scuse the mess. ;)
I built it ahh like almost 2 years ago I think. Its an AMD Barton AthlonXP 2500+ but she clocks in at 2.2ghz (3200+ speeds). Asus A7N8X-Deluxe mobo, 1 gig of Corsair PC3200 (DDR400) RAM, Radeon 9700 Pro, DVD, CDRW, 2HDs (300+gigs of space and its damn near full, WTF?) 19 inch Viewsonic, Logitech mouse (MX500), keyboard, and speakers (5.1 surround), blah blah blah. Its pretty good. Will probably need replaced by the end of this year though. My wallet is weeping already :(

Annd my Parents:

Whee! Its a cute little Antec Aria (SFF) I put together for my folks and sister. Its suprisingly close to my own rig too. Similar mobo (I forget the designation but its basically the A7N8X small form factor), processor (a 2500 pushed to 2.15ghz), vid card (Radeon 9600 Pro), gig of RAM (cheap stuff though ;)), a DVD burner, my old Logitech 4.1 surround, and various other parts (monitor mouse etc) cannibalized from past computers. Its really nice actually, I like it.

Actually I'm not sure if I want a SFF for myself or not. They're cute as hell and save tons of space, but they tend to limit your selection of parts. I don't mind having a tower (especially one with a window and LIGHTS WOO!) so i'll likely stick with them for the time being.

The Aria? It is indeed sextastic. Especially with the blue lights... unfortunatly you cant see them in that shot because a) the HD activity light isn't on (its blue!), and B) both trough lights have burnt out in a year (my only complaint, really), but they do glow a very pretty blue. Here's a promo shot of the case with the trough lights on:

Its really nice to work with too. The top comes off and both side panels (the grey things) slide out, and theres a cradle assembly in the top of the case (it holds the CD drive and HD bay) that lifts out. The biggest challange is sealing the thing up once you're all done, because you've got to make sure all the cables are folding the right way as you close it. Very first time I booted it I actually had a spare end of an IDE cable fall INTO the CPU fan. I heard a *clunk* as the fan hit it, and then the nice panic-inducing "CPU FAN ERROR" message on the monitor. But I got it tucked away properly and she all went fine. Oh, and speaking of fans its a suprisingly quiet case too. I've got four fans in this one (CPU, vid card, a PCI slot blower, and the HUGE honkin 90mm power supply/main vent fan) and shes just a whisper. Also, the 8-in-1 card reader (the goofy slots on the front) are slick too. You can stuff damn near any kind of memory card from a digital cam or PDA or a million other electronic gizmos into the thing.

Really nice case. :)

I'm getting Reagan eighties flashbacks, and I'm Gorbachev.  This business is gonna bankrupt me.

I expanded my HD array by 100GB, and I love the elbow room.  Being a fairly patient lad, ATA133 is just fine (until the next box, anyway).

Okay, here's my present rig. this is an off-the-shelf Compaq from PC World that was always going to be a stand-in until I could find the time to build a new one.

Pentium 4, 3.4Ghz processor
1Gb DDR Ram
250Gb HDD, with a 250Gb external drive as a backup medium
256Mb ATI Radeon X300 graphics card.

The shopping list I'm presently going with for the replacement:

opteron 140 CPU @ 2.6
Asus A8N mobo
2gb XMS3200C2PT RAM
X1900 XT 512MB Graphics
320GB Hard Drive
Tagan 580W Power Supply

As recommended by a friend of a friend who works for Overclockers UK.

I think I might actually rebuild it, though - I'd like it to be less bulky and easier to open. I mean, it was easy enough to take it apart when I needed to throw the modem card back in, but putting it back together around the parts proved to be a bit difficult.

This btw, is my quite messy setup:

My Desktop which can be seen under the desk (the blue glow behind the massive mains power floor fan - next best thing after water cooling):
Pentium 4 Prescott 3.2GHz, 800MHz FSB
1024MB DDR400 dual channel (paired) RAM
400GB across 3 HDs (120gb SATA, 200gb SATA, 80gb IDE)
ABIT IS7-E2 motherboard (crap i know :S)
Nvidia 6600GT 256MB AGP8x
BenQ p992 19" CRT Flat Monitor
Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite

My Laptop (el cheapo, don't use it for much):
Acer Aspire 3503WLCi
Celeron M 1.5GHz 400MHz FSB 1MB L2
15.4" WXGA TFT
60GB HDD
512MB Ram
Wireless LAN (of course)

Those 2 plus a couple of servers hooked up through a 24port managed switch and laptop's on a custom-built Linux Wireless Access Point made from my grandma's old computer meets ebay :D.
Also my Old-School HP iPAQ h1930 PDA can be seen plus the all important Bundberg Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic of course).

Some Extras:
USB Cup warmer thanks to the GF (ontop of right speaker)
Cow Jellybean Dispenser (on top of monitor)
Talking Stewy from Family Guy (left of the right speaker)
Hard drive platters acting as a pseudo mirror in top right side of pic (next to Venetians)
Logitech WingMan Force 3D Joystick (bottom left corner)

So that is my beloved setup.

P.S. Amen to Luke's LEGO Chassis... that is awesome. I'd have cooling concerns however :P. Most of my servers don't have proper cases either... one is made out of an old hard cover folder lol

I just need to know how much that setup set u back?

Well I purchased the desktop (not including sound card, monitors, keyboard/mouse) in the summer of 2003 for just under $6000. The soundcard was bought a month later for $150, keyboard and mouse were a set bought a few months after that for $175, I already has a monitor back then so that'd be $6325. Now that 40GB WD hard drive wasn't in there I actually bought a 36GB Raptor but later sold it for various technical reasons.

So without going into too many stories the PC itself was $6400.

Now the monitors are yet another story. I originaly had a 24" CRT that died and I replaced that with two LCD's (the two on the left and right, the Samsung 213t's) for $4100 total. The third LCD is only a month old and it was $900 + $400 for the big stand they're all sitting on.

So in short, $7700 has been spent on my PC between 2003-2006.

I have four servers sitting in my closet which consist of a PIII 600 (Web Server), Dual PIII 1Ghz (Bit Torrent, Domain Controller, Exchange), PII 233 (Logging server, security), and a PII 300 which is my m0n0wall firewall/router. I've also got a Motion Computing TabletPC sitting in my room as well.

I like my computers, what can I say :). That and my home theater (approx $17K) are my two biggest hobbies.

I don't know why I talk on and on about this stuff no one's interested anyways :)

Cheers.

That's a damn nice machine Daphoid...

Lets see is I can remember what I've got in my computer...

AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.67 Ghz)
Gigabyte Mobo...can't remember the model off the top of my head.
1gb PC3200DDR Memory.
Nvidia Geforce 5700FX, 256mb
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy II
A very cheapo case with 4 fans in various places ( I should get an Lian Li case, those are nice)
80 gig HDD, 7200 RPM if I remember correctly,
Samsung DVD-ROM
Samsung CD-RW (52-32-52)
liteon 3.5" floppy (gotta have it)
Window XP SP2 Professional.
2 15" Flat panel moniters.  I really wish I had the money for 2 of those sexy 20" Apple Cinema Displays.

It runs most games really well, and other more recient games I run with moderate frame rate loss.  WOW and Oblivion are the only games I've had to turn the graphics down on.

My Linux box is a little older, all I have it for is a TeamSpeak server:
Asus Mobo of some sort
AMD 400mgz
768 mb RAM
3DFX Voodoo 5
Creative SoundBlaster 32
8gig HDD
30gig HDD
CD-RW (48-16-48)
CD-ROM (48x)
3.5" Floppy drive
Red Hat "Fedora" Core 5 (linux)
Ed

PS.  First post, FTW.

I do web design / graphic work for my own little "consulting on the side" type deal. Mainly I use it for video games and what not.

I really enjoy it because I can be doing something processor intensive and still do everything I normally do (use outlook calander, chat on IRC, listen to music, and what not).

It wasn't really "spending needlessly" I planned for this computer about 1.5 years before I actually bought it and spent my months saving up for it.

The multimonitors is really a handy thing, I like having the ability to spread everything around and see it all at once.

Okay! New chassis, and better pictures this time.

First, a couple shots of the setup. Please excuse all the snoopies.

Here's the mod:

And for extra cooling:

The CD drive is at the very bottom. The power button is right next to the power light, which is the transparent brick above the two black round bricks. Right above those is the floppy drive. The extra thing on top is just a little open-close case to hold a USB extension cord, which is plugged in in the back.

Finally, some extra shots:

You can see the modem card when the lid is up, along with the RAM banks. And yes, those are the only two PCI slots.

Here's a couple shots of the back. As you can see, I at least know enough to expose the fan exit.
