anyone else played this game, it has high praise form my brother and his roommates so i picked it up on saturday.
the thing is that it wrecks my comp at around 800*600, i don't play many graphic intensive games(more of a tetris and trance music guy) anymore, so I only have a geforce fx5200 i beleive. it can't handle the graphics, anyone recommend a good upgrade graphics card that wont put me in the whole mroe than $100 or is this impossible?
i even cleaned out my comp before i installed too, like 3 hours of uninstalling and virus scanning and then i install and can't get through the character create because it is too slow.

I wouldnt mind a little more in depth, ie price breakdowns, and bang for your buck opinions on those cards.
Back in teh day I coulda told you everything about any vid card on the market, but I am no longer an emo teenager with nothing but time :S

Okay, now that I'm not at lunch, I can go into this a bit more.
Firstly, it's helpful to know the rest of your system, to see if it's even worth upgrading your card. Going off just what I know about your existing card...
You're more than likely running AGP, which is a dying technology. If you want to stay AGP, this is going to limit you. You're better off getting a PCI-Express motherboard and card, which will set you up for the future.
However, there's no way in heck you'd be able to do this for $100. In fact, it will be difficult to get a better card for $100; and AGP variants of existing PCI-E cards are more expensive than their PCI-E brothers.
Are you willing to spend a little more on this? If not, buy the ATI X800GTO (~$169). It's the cheapest option with good performance on AGP.
If you are? Get a PCI-E motherboard (~$100) and either the PCI-E version of the 6800GS or a 7600GT (~189).
eVGA makes good nVidia based cards, and both Sapphire and ATI make good cards for ATI chipsets.
http://shsc.info/PCPartsPickingGuide is a great source for PC parts info and is where I gleaned a bit of my knowledge for this post.

Dude, I am totally bookmarking that page. I might even put up a link to it after I've read through it. We were talking about doing something like this a while back, but if I can just link to an external source that seems to be updated regularly then that is just aces & spades.

The nvidia 6600gt is know to be quite good for it's price

The elder scroll forums have some good advice but finding it can be a bear sometimes since posts fall off pages faster than fast.
My advice is to go PCI-E since AGP is going to die sooner or later. Why invest into a new mediocre card when you can save up some more money and get a really good card and a new motherboard? The 6600gt is a good recommendation for the price though.
Also there is a whole thread on Oblivion here (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/viewtopic.php?t=10108).

Why invest in a mediocre card? Because you're poor.
-
No if you are that poor you have better things to spend money on than a video card. Trust me, I was in college forever :P

hope that link helps, it's a thread over at gamefaqs.com made to help people run this game
i personally use a nvidia 6600gt and am happy with performance

No I have better things to spend my money on then a large chunk of my money on my computer.
If I wanted to spend $600 on my computer Id go spend $600 dollars on it. But I dont want to invest alot of money into a time sink, I want to invest a smaller amount of money into it.

I've got a brand-new AMD dual-athlon mobo, a gig of ram, and a PCI-X nVidia card arriving tomorrow. I can't wait to see how they handle Oblivion.
-
Jeph, I run a very similar setup and Oblivion runs like a dream.
The memory and multithreading tweaks here gave me about a 10-15 fps increase on average.
-
Handling Oblivion isn't the problem. The game issues are.
-
I haven't had any games issues other than needing to tweak it for performance.
Is it really as bad as Morrocrash?
-
I went into a house. I try to leave. Always crashes. Try prior save game. Crash. After that I'm like three quests back. Grr.
-
Now that does suck.
