Who are your favourite on-screen characters? I find this is somewhat different to my favourite characters from a book: a good actor can turn a standard character into something brilliant. Ie Lord of the Rings: my favourite on-screen characters are totally different to my favourites from the book.
Anyway, without further ado, I'll start off with a couple of mine:
RIFF-RAFF (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
I think the best thing about riff-raff is maybe simply his voice. Also, his entrance, his dancing...okay, he's just fucking cool.
Best line: All of them.
EVIL GENIUS (Time Bandits)
Costume by Giger, lines by Micheal Palin and Terry Gilliam, acting by David Warner. There's very little that could be better about Evil Genius. Highlights are his insane ways of disposing of his foes (and indeed henchmen), his obsession with technology, and his lines.
Best lines: "If I was making a universe, I wouldn't have messed around with butterflies and daffodils, I'd have started with lasers, eight o'clock day one!" *makes a decisive gesture, accidentally incinerating a henchman* "Sorry."
Evil: "God isn't interested in technology. He cares nothing for the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time, forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men!"
Robert: "Slugs."
Evil: "Slugs! HE created slugs! They can't hear. They can't speak. They can't operate machinery. Are we not in the hands of a lunatic?"
DR. PRETORIUS (The Bride of Frankenstein)
Camp, evil, deranged, and the best mad scientist EVER.
Best line: "Have a *insert something here*, they're my only vice!" (he has many vices. He also drinks gin out of laboratory glassware.)
LORD SUMMERISLE (The Wicker Man)
Mild-mannered, jovial, mysterious, and, as he points out to Howie, a very religious man. One of Christopher Lees best, and most complex, roles. Indeed, it was written specially for him as his escape for Hammer Horror.
Best line:
Sergeant Howie: "And what of the true god, whose glory, churches and monasteries have been built on these islands for generations past? Now sir, what of him?"
Lord Summerisle: "He's dead. Can't complain, had his chance and in modern parlance, blew it."

Oldboy's Oh-Daesu
I can't begin to gush about how much i love this film, two of the greatest characters to ever interact with eachother in a sadistic plot of revenge.
Oldboy's Woo-jin Lee
The second of the two, and an equally amazing performance as well. These two are most solid on-screen pair since Brad Pitt and Ed Norton.
-
(http://www.newinspirations.com/Humphrey_Bogart_and_Lauren_Bacall_tile.jpg)
Slim (Lauren Bacall) from To Have and Have Not. Innuendo in a 40s movie, not an ingenue, intelligent, and uber-contralto which earns her points with me.
-
(http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/8504/insidedvdcollateral5uc.jpg)
Vincent from Collateral. One of the few believable hitmen I've seen in a Hollywood movie.
-
And Tom Cruise's only worthwhile performance in years.
Jef Costello, Le Samourai. The epitome of stone-cold badass.
Jeffers/Obecks
Parker/Longbaugh
Way of the Gun. Two fantastic 'buddy' pairings. With James Caan somewhere in the middle, no less.
"Between you and me, this isn't really a 'brains' sort of operation."
The United Systems Colonial Marine Corps. The State of the Badass Art, as it were.
You've done a man's work, sir.
-
Domino Harvey in Domino.
Talk about uber lesbian domination fantasy.
-
That's funny, I was thinkign about posting the two from Way of the Gun after looking around my room for posters of awesome movies.

Sam in Garden State[/img]
Seriously? She barely had a character, her entire roll was looking cute and kissing Zach Braff.
What was there to like, really.
-
Dude, dissing Natalie Portman is almost as suicidal as dissing Winona Rider. A gang of skinny emo-boys are probably already waiting outside your van to attack you.
Edit: Oh, right, topic.
Hellz yeah

Kaiser Soze.

-
What? She totally brung the movie to life.
Well I thought so.
Her energy and charisma constrasted well with Braff's character.
She was just so endearing!
Just me then ;)

Lotsa Ash
I was going to post ash earlier, then my internet fucked up and I forgot.
-
Bullet-Tooth Tony from Snatch. Made me a Vinnie Jones fan for life.
-
Travis Bickle
Very possibly the finest character study committed to film.

No man, Tyron totally made that movie. We all know it.

Not quite as memorable as Tony, but he was an excellent character. Especially because the guy who played him wasn't even an actor; he had originally been hired as security for the movie set or something like that, and they decided to give him a part.

Wolf from Living In Oblivion.
Dermot Mulroney's best role ever. And I know that's not saying much.

A gaggle of Bond villains, though I have a soft spot for Hugo Drax, because of the sheer diabolical nature of his plan.

I refuse to watch that movie, because I hear they butchered the book (and I don't mean "It didn't have all the stuff the book had," I mean, "That's not a Catch 22 movie, that's crap"), and the book is one of my favorites ever.
-
Rochester - The Libertine
but you're not supposed to like him. He told us all not to like him!!!
Catch-22 isn't a bad movie, just pales next to the book.
oh and is there anything to be said for Teddy and Vern in Stand By Me?

I don't know about you, but I'm rooting for the the eye creatures.

That was the movie they were mocking on the first MST3k episode I ever saw, way back when it was on Comedy Central. Good stuff. If I recall, one of their weapons against the beasties were their car's headlights.

MARLA fucking SINGER!
Fuck yes. The fact that noone else has said, fuck yes also makes me sad. The bit where she goes "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school" was originally "I want to have your abortion" the producers wanted it changed so the director made changed it to the grade school line and they BEGGED him to get it changed back.
-

I love the movie, the book is one of my favourite books of all time and I honestly think the film completely keeps the spirit of the book while working as a film and is one of the best book to film translations I've seen.
I also agree with Marla Singer.
-
Then maybe I'll have to watch it some time.

I just saw V for Vendetta, and frankly, V is now the boxxor roxxorz.

BILL THE MOTHERFUCKING BUTCHER.
-
(http://media.lawrence.com/img/photos/2005/04/07/inigomontoya.jpg)
GUYS, HE WAS ON DEAD LIKE ME GUYS. HE WAS THAT DUDE WHO ORGANIZED STUFF. DAMNIT, AM I REALLY GOING TO HAVE TO LIST AN ENTIRE CASE HISTORY OF INIGO MONTOYA?!?
(Also, I bet Swearengen could kick Bill The Butchers Arse any day of the drunken week)
-
Well, he was a pretty major character in Dead Like Me, but I dont know much about what else he has done. All I know is he was old, and he was pretty pissed off, and he challenged a dead waffle-house chef to a cooking throwdown and he won, somehow. It was a whole thing, and the entire time I was just saying "You killed my father! Prepare to die!!", so I dont know just how prepared for battle he was.
-
Noone has nominated Kurt Russell for Escape From LA? For shame!
(Because the intra nets does not let me have a picture of him surfing in that movie, the following is an artist's rendering)

Clive Owen as Dalton Russel
I loved this guy. Just how smart he was, how collected he was... "I'm going to speak to your father about this game." He's got magnetism.
Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith
Absolutely the best performance of any actor in that whole movie. Awesome.
Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K
Don't you love Tommy Lee Jones? I do too.
George Clooney as Ulysses Everett McGill
Hilarious performance. Awesome movie.

Oliver Platt as Hector Cyr
If you need any other reason to see a movie about a giant crocodile, this is it.

David Carradine as Bill
He's the man. I freaking want his flute.

Roberto Campanella as Pyramid Head.

Ha yeah was great and indeed better than Ewan in EP II perhaps. How could I easily forget him ... but then I might end up posting pics of the entire cast
-
Yeah, in those movies, Guinness was probably about the level of everyone else, because of his part and the amount of screen time he got. However, I think he was quite clearly the best actor involved in that series. Not to slight the other actors, though, because Alec Guinness is God. We were watching Lawrence of Arabia, and one of my friends just blurts out "I would have Alec Guinness's babies." He's that awesome.
-
No discussion of Alec Guinness is complete without mentioning

I'm reading the book and I actually just noticed that. The line is sooo very creepy in the book and I think it is a lot more suited to her character 'I want to get pregnant so I can have your abortion' or something along those lines suits Marla Singer a lot more I think.
Also Gregory Peck as Atticus in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'
And... Steve Buscemi in 'Reservoir Dogs' as Mr. Pink

Al Pacino again, as Tony Montana
