So I was reading the Cheesy Pop Tunes thread and thinking about Come On Eileen, and starting thinking about how the Save Ferris cover of that song is totally one of my guilty pleasures. And then I started thinking about other exciting covers of songs, and came to the conclusion that I need more of them.
One of my personal favorites? Get Him Eat Him covering The Magnetic Fields' "Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side."
What about the rest of you? What're your favorites?
-
Exodus - Low Rider (War)
Nevermore - The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
Alex Skolnick Trio - Electric Eye (Judas Priest)
Iron Maiden - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Black Sabbath)
Death - Painkiller (Judas Priest)
Testament - Holier than Thou (Metallica)
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any of the bootlegs of Dream Theater covering the entirety of Dark Side of the Moon or Number of the Beast, so I can't say how good those are.
I avoided groups with members of the original bands: Dio covering Rainbow or Black Sabbath, Star One covering Ayreon, Dream Theater covering Liquid Tension Experiment, etc.
-
Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (cover of The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out)
Curtis Mayfield - We've Only Just Begun (Carpenters)
Cat Power - I Found A Reason (sorry to any die-hard VU fans)
D'Angelo - Feel Like Making Love (Roberta Flack)
Einstürzende Neubauten - Sand (Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra - no one mention Slowdive's redundant version of 'Some Velvet Morning', please)
Chaka Khan feat. Melle Mell - I Feel For You (Prince)
Rickie Lee Jones - Rebel Rebel (David Bowie)
Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You (Screaming Jay Hawkins rocks it too, but Nina just goes to another planet towards the end of her version)
Bauhaus - Telegram Sam (T-Rex)
..and direct from the cheese thread:
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Gaynor)
And I don't listen to The Beatles much, but their version of 'Twist & Shout' is certainly the definitive one. Their version of 'Money' is great, as is that distracted kinda punk version of it... who was that? X-Ray Specs? Nah, surely not... I should just google. [Flying Lizards, it turns out - got a big fright when I saw my own name listed among their members?!]
-
flaming lips - bohemian rhapsody
-
aimee mann - the scientist (coldplay)
dar williams w/ ani difranco - comfortably numb (pink floyd)
dresden dolls - pretty in pink (psychedelic furs)
elliott smith - trouble (cat stevens)
loquat - there is a light that never goes out (the smiths)
nada surf - if you leave (omd)
neutral milk hotel - i love how you love me (phil spector)
nico - fairest of the seasons (jackson browne)
stars - this charming man (the smiths)
a friend of mine did a fairly respectable acoustic cover of new order's "bizarre love triangle" a while back, which i also liked quite a bit.
-
Children of Bodom - Oops I Did It Again (Britney Spears)
-
Social Distortion- "Ring of Fire"
The Pietasters- "Same Old Song"
Dinosaur Jr- "Just Like Heaven"
The Slackers- "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Hurra Torpedo- "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
Leatherface- "Message in a Bottle"
The Peacocks- "Ballroom Blitz"
Ben Folds- "Bitches Ain't Shit"
-
Ophthalamia - Deathcrush
-
Suidakra - The One Piece Puzzle
Agalloch - Kneel To The Cross
Muse - Feeling Good
Faith No More - Easy
-
Brad Mehldau - Paranoid Android
Mustard Plug - The Freshman (sorry, that's the only punk/ska cover I listen too, honest!)
Cake - I Will Survive
-
Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (cover of The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out)
Cat Power - I Found A Reason
..and direct from the cheese thread:
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Gaynor)
Yes!
and also:
Anyway that You Want Me - Both Spiritualized and Evie Sands (cover of the Troggs)
Whiskey in the Jar - Belle and Sebastian (Thin Lizzy version)
The Boys are Back in Town - Belle ad Sebastian (Thin Lizzy)
Superstar - Sonic Youth (Carpenters)
-
Snoop Doggy Dog's 'Gin & Juice', performed by Hayseed Dixie. Damn if everyone in res didn't overplay it, but it's still awesome.
-
Luna - Sweet Child o' Mine (G 'n' R)
The Slits - Heard It Through the Grapevine (Gladys Knight?)
Bedhead - Disorder (Joy Divison)
Shonen Knife - Top of the World (The Carpenters)
-
The Sundays- WIld Horses (ROlling Stones)
Jenny Lewis- Handle with Care (Travelling Wilburys)
Nirvana- Man who Sold the World (David Bowie)
DIana Krall- Basin Street Blues (I think Louis Artmstrong recorded it first)
Dynamite Hack?- Boys in the Hood (Easy E)
I'm also seconding Cake's "I Will Survive", and Ben Folds
-
Ehh... for me, most of the originals are far, far better than the covers. That being said, I do like a few of the covers:
Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven
The Gourds - Gin And Juice ... (cause it's hilarious)
John Cale - Hallelujah ... (also, Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright's versions are better than the original, I just prefer Cale's)
oh, and as for Cake's version of "I Will Survive", second'd
and... that's about it, I think
-
Suidakra - The One Piece Puzzle
Agalloch - Kneel To The Cross
Yes.
I particularly like covers that somehow mutilate or have fun with or use the original to make a point, ie.
Coil - Tainted Love
Laibach - Sympathy for the Devil (all the versions. Ultimate exercise in deconstruction.)
Inkubus Sukkubus - I Can't Get You Out of my Head
Ewigkeit - Ea 2000: Out For the Count (Cover of Burzum - Ea, Lord of the Depths)
Libitina - Gothic People (Cover of Pulp - Common People)
Therion - Summernight City
Skyclad - Prime Evil
-
I agree with the Cat Power and add this:
Cat Power - Psychic Hearts(Sonic Youth)
Tori Amos - Enjoy the Silence(Depeche Mode)
Dokaka - Smells Like Teen Spirit(The Bad Plus' version is also good but Dokaka is insane...ly good)
Feist - Secret Heart(Ron Sexsmith)
Low - Little Drummer Boy
Nouvelle Vague - Too Drunk to Fuck(it does in fact kick the original's ass)
TV on the Radio - Mr. Grieves(a capella cover are delicious)
Xiu Xiu - Fast Car
etc.
The first one who says Hurt dies horribly!
-
Nick Cave - Common People
-
Dream Theater covering Dark Side of the Moon(Pink Floyd), Master of Puppets(Metallica who did it worse than DT), Funeral for a Friend(Elton John) and The Big Medly which included In the Flesh?, Carry on Wayward Son, and Bohemian Rhapsody among others.
-
Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN)
BRING IT ON!!
Okay, i'm mostly joking, but i do enjoy the song sometimes.
I can't really think right now, but here's a few (i think most of them have been said already):
Jenny Lewis - Handle with Care
Cake - I Will Survive
Reel Big Fish - Take On Me
Social Distortion - Ring of Fire (This was the song for the grand march at my brother's wedding)
The Jam - David Watts
Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven
There are a lot more, but I'm at work so I really can't think.
-
Dream Theater covering Dark Side of the Moon(Pink Floyd), Master of Puppets(Metallica who did it worse than DT), Funeral for a Friend(Elton John) and The Big Medly which included In the Flesh?, Carry on Wayward Son, and Bohemian Rhapsody among others.
They covered all of Dark Side? Urgh, I do NOT want to hear that. My brother will though.
-
Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN)
I nominate this for best cover ever.
-
The majority of Moulin Rouge was basically cover songs. I enjoyed some of those. I'm not at all ashamed to say it either.
-
Cat Power - Psychic Hearts(Sonic Youth)
I've been trying to get that but I haven't had any luck, where did you get it from?
-
They covered all of Dark Side? Urgh, I do NOT want to hear that. My brother will though.
I think he probably means just Brain Damage.
-
I've been trying to get that but I haven't had any luck, where did you get it from?
I don't recall actually, it is on an EP of hers called Undercover though.
-
Andrew Bird covering Bob Dylan's "Oh, Sister." IT IS AMAZING
Also, Talking Heads's cover of Al Green's "Take Me To the River." Duh. And The Mountain Goats's cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two-Headed Boy," and various live covers of Dylan that Jeff Buckley did.
-
They covered all of Dark Side? Urgh, I do NOT want to hear that. My brother will though.
I think he probably means just Brain Damage.
Actually, no. Dream Theater, who rarely tours with openers, have occasionally done a 'classic album cover' for one half of their set. They did Master of Puppets in Barcelona, New York, and Chicago back in 2002, Number of the Beast on 3 gigs later in the same tour, and Dark Side of the Moon in London, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Sao Paolo late last year. There's numerous bootlegs floating about, but I haven't been able to find any, except for the title track from Master of Puppets, and the sound quality was so terrible I trashed it.
Supposedly there will be at least two more, and it's a general consensus one will be a Rush album.
-
Xiu Xiu's cover of Joy Division / New Order's "Ceremony"
-
Deerhoof covering My Pal Foot Foot by the Shaggs.
Also, Final Fantasy covering Peach, Plum, Pear by Joanna Newsom is pretty fantastic.
-
"Hurt" by Johnny Cash (NIN)
"In My Life" by Johnny Cash (Beatles)
"War Pigs" by Faith No More (Black Sabbath)
"Easy" by Faith No More (Commodores)
"I Started a Joke" by Faith No More (Bee Gees)
"I Fought the Law" by the Clash
"Come Together" by Aerosmith
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
"Silver and Gold" by Joe Strummer
"Gloria" by Patti Smith (ok, debatable as to whether or not it's a cover, but I say it counts)
"House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals
"Across the Universe" by Rufus Wainwright
-
I always thought that the Animals did the original version of House of the Rising Sun.
-
they popularized it, but it was actually an old folk song that had been done by a couple people before them
-
Deerhoof covering My Pal Foot Foot by the Shaggs.
ohdeargodwhy
-
Greenhaus - Transmission
Trance versions of Joy Division songs should not work. But oh god is this tune sexual.
Oh, and continuing the Dream Theater theme, their version of Perfect Strangers (Deep Purple) and their Led Zeppelin medly (The Rover / Achilles Last Stand / Song Remains The Same) from the A Change Of Seasons CD are flat-out jawesome.
-
Xiu Xiu's cover of Joy Division / New Order's "Ceremony"
This is SO amazing. Galaxie 500's cover is pretty good too, but not as good.
Other covers I like:
Jeez, this is corny, but I really like Mary Lou Lord's cover of the Bevis Frond's "He Had You." Also, the Breeders' cover of Sebadoh's "The Freed Pig" is amazing.
Lauren, thanks for mentioning the Mag Fields cover! If anybody's interested, you can hear it at : http://www.itsmeaningless.com/yes/MFT_GHEH.html
-
I picked up a 7" of "The Paper Chase and Xiu Xiu cover Nick Cave." It's quite good. Xiu Xiu does 'Jack the Ripper' and The Paper Chase does 'God Is In The House.'
-
Colin Meloy - Every Day Is Like Sunday.
Jose Gonzales - Heartbeats (Mainly because I cannot stand The Knife)
Lifetime - It's Not Funny Anymore
Leatherface - Message In A Bottle
-
A few more:
Mates of State--Starman (David Bowie)
Grandaddy--Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys)
The Decemberists--Bridges and Balloons (Joanna Newsom)
Of Montreal--Spanish Dance Troupe (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci)
The Dandy Warhols--Jean Genie (David Bowie)
Rilo Kiley--After Hours (The Velvet Underground)
Belle and Sebastian--Here Comes The Sun (The Beatles)
...and the funniest goddamn cover I've ever heard, The Starting Line--I'm Real (J-Lo)
Personally, I don't look to cover songs for something much better than the original band did. I just think it's interesting to hear the song in another band's voice. Especially if it's a band you love and a song you love. Shakes things up a little.
When I was in middle school, I had a disgustingly large array of pop punk covers that I would listen to a lot. Oh god why!
-
...and the funniest goddamn cover I've ever heard, The Starting Line--I'm Real (J-Lo)
I second that! Without a doubt the best song on the "Punk Goes Pop" collection (I too had an obsession with odd punk covers a few years back).
How could I not mention Me First and the Gimme Gimmes? The ultimate punk cover band.
-
Children of Bodom - Oops I Did It Again
Metallica - Damage Case (the song that got me into Motorhead)
Dropkick Murphys - It's a Long Way To The Top
Ted Leo - Since You Been Gone
Deftones - Simple Man
-
Hybrid Moments covered by Everybody Loves Irene
Awesome thing about this cover is that I had never heard the original by the Misfits. The Irene version is really sad and melodic with amazing female vocals. when I heard the original I was very "Bleh."
-
Anyway that You Want Me - Both Spiritualized and Evie Sands (cover of the Troggs)
Huh, I had no idea that wasn't a Spiritualized song, I just thought it was that dude being typically retro sounding. :) So beautiful... Fanboy that I am I shelled out 25 quid for it when I came across the single in London.
-
Eels - Jennifer Eccles
-
nickel creek - toxic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEnBfSdHwBI&search=nickel%20creek%20toxic)
i feel like britney could learn something from this.
-
Deerhoof covering My Pal Foot Foot by the Shaggs.
ohdeargodwhy
You love the Shaggs and you know it.
-
Huh, I had no idea that wasn't a Spiritualized song, I just thought it was that dude being typically retro sounding. :) So beautiful... Fanboy that I am I shelled out 25 quid for it when I came across the single in London.
I think the Evie Sands version is even more beautiful.
-
They covered all of Dark Side? Urgh, I do NOT want to hear that. My brother will though.
Dude, it's amazing. They've got a DSOTM DVD and CD. They got a sax player, and a chick to do all the female vocals even. What's wrong with DT anyway?
-
I like:
Ministry - Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan)
Snuff - I will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
Fatboy Slim - The Joker (Steve Miller)
TV on the Radio - Mr. Grieves (The Pixies)
Rufus Wainwright - One Man Guy (His Dad)
Placebo - 20th Century Boy (So many people have done this song, I'm not even sure where it came from)
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (Wayne Cochran)
Those are just a few I can think of right now.
-
Deerhoof covering My Pal Foot Foot by the Shaggs.
I can't think of anyone more qualified to cover this. I mean it is just so fitting, Deerhoof is basically the Shaggs if they could play their instruments. Even though one can hardly imagine such a phenomenon.
-
they wouldn't really be the Shaggs if they could actually play their instruments, would they?
-
Build Me Up Buttercup - The Goops (The Foundations)
Simply because of all the times I have watched Mallrats with an ex and not made it through the lift scene without having to pause for makeouts :D
Also:
Muse - Feeling Good (Nina Simone)
Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights (TPS)
-
I don't really like covers as I prefer older songs, especially those from Bob Dylan.
The Arcade Fire - this must be the place
-
Ministry - Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan)
I'll second that one.
Also, Pantera - Kill All the White People (Type O Negative)
-
Stone Temple Pilots 'Break On Through (To The Other Side)' (originally by The Doors)
Pearl Jam 'Rocking in the Free World' (originally by Neil Young)
Mudhoney 'The Rose' (originally by Amanda McBroom)
The Flaming Lips '(What A) Wonderful World' (originally by Louis Armstrong)
-
Stone Temple Pilots 'Break On Through (To The Other Side)' (originally by The Doors)
Pearl Jam 'Rocking in the Free World' (originally by Neil Young)
Mudhoney 'The Rose' (originally by Amanda McBroom)
The Flaming Lips '(What A) Wonderful World' (originally by Louis Armstrong)
I though Louis Armstrong covered What a Wonderful World...I didn't realise it was his song.
-
I'm pretty definite that it's Louis'.
-
It very well could be. I just didn't know it.
-
It was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss specifically for Armstrong
-
It was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss specifically for Armstrong
Ah, thank you.
-
Superstar - Sonic Youth (Carpenters)
QFT. Also:
Ramones - California Sun (Rivieras, Joe Jones)
Pixies - Cecilia Ann (Surftones)
Sonic Youth - I Wanna Be Your Dog (Stooges) (I want to hear the Swans version of this, too; I've heard a bit of it on a sampler and it sounds good)
Mudhoney - Hate the Police (Dicks)
-
dread Zeppelin- black dog(led zeppelin). a reggae band with an elvis impersonator as a lead singer, from the 80's. ridiculous.
-
Colonel Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade doing Pink Floyds album Animals in its entirety.
Also; all of the ridiculous covers that Bodom does (brittaney spears, andrew w.k. etc)
Black Dahlia Murder- Paint It Black (rolling stones)
and the White Stripes cover a lot of old folk/blues tunes like "St. James Infirmary Blues", "Death Letter" and "One More Cup of Coffee" etc and those are all really good
-
David Bowie - White Light Wgite Heat (VU)
David Bowie - I'm Waiting for the MAn (VU)
-
and the White Stripes cover a lot of old folk/blues tunes like "St. James Infirmary Blues", "Death Letter" and "One More Cup of Coffee" etc and those are all really good
You really can't go wrong with St. James Infirmary Blues. I have a really really slow version that Louis Armstrong did that's just incredible.
-
Definitely Frente of Bizarre Love Triangle.
. . .
Kidding. But I did like Feist's cover of Inside and Out, and I am not a Bee Gees fan.
-
You really can't go wrong with St. James Infirmary Blues. I have a really really slow version that Louis Armstrong did that's just incredible.
yeah, i've heard so many different versions of this song with so many variations on the lyrics. its one of my favorite songs.
-

-
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Death Cab for Cutie - Dream Scream
-
Billy Corgan-Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Crazy in Love - David Byrne (Beyonce)
Telegram Sam - Bauhaus (T. Rex)

-
Deerhoof covering My Pal Foot Foot by the Shaggs.
I can't think of anyone more qualified to cover this. I mean it is just so fitting, Deerhoof is basically the Shaggs if they were less melodic
Fixeded!
It's been said befoce but Deerhoof covering The Shaggs is like prostate cancer covering AIDS.
I like:
A night like this-Professional Murder Music(The Cure)
How soon is now?-Snake River Conspiracy(The Smiths)
Lay lady, lay-Ministry(Bob Dylan)
She moves in mysterious ways-KMFDM(U2)
Raining Blood-Concord Dawn(Slayer)

Down in the park-Marlyn Manson and NIN(Gary Numan)
Are friends electric?-Information Society(Gary Numan)
Cars-Fear Factory(Gary Numan)
Metal-NIN/The Syndicate(Gary Numan)
In my defence, that MCR song is their only good one and I like G. Numan covers ok?
-
The thought of My Chemical Romance covering the Misfits hurts me becasue they are my least favourite bands ever.
Also
I fought the law(and I won)-The Dead Kennedys(Buddy Holly?)
Originally written by Sonny Curtis.
-
Ah thank you.
I despise MCR as well. I like the misfits however. It's a pretty good cover I think. Meh, I'm not defending them. They suck.
-
David Bowie - White Light Wgite Heat (VU)
David Bowie - I'm Waiting for the MAn (VU)
David Bowie - Cactus (Pixies)
-
White rabbit-Collide(Velvet Underground)
In fairness, I only have a couple of VU albums, but isn't White Rabbit originally a Jefferson Airplane song?
-
It is. Someone totally fucked up there.
-
WILLIAM SHATNER COVERING LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS (THE BEATLES)
. . .
Sorry. But everyone should listen to it at least once to put things in perspective.
-
Tom Jones with the Cardigans - Burning Down the House
Tom Jones with Barenaked Ladies - Little Green Bag
Nina Gordon - Straight Outta Compton
A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Loved Me
Guster - The Boy with the Arab Strap
Ben Folds - Golden Slumbers
The Fiery Furnaces - Norwegian Wood
Ben Harper - Michelle
The Pixies - I Can't Forget
The WEIRDEST cover ever...
Crispin Glover - These Boots are Made for Walkin
And the BEST cover ever... because I worship Joan Jett
Joan Jett - I Love Rock and Roll.
-
I can beat your weird cover of These Boots.... with an even weirder one.
The Residents - Boots (These Boots are Made for Walking Cover)
YOu totally would not get that it is a cover unless someone told you, then it makes sense.
-
In fairness, I only have a couple of VU albums, but isn't White Rabbit originally a Jefferson Airplane song?
What're you talking about? VU was never mentioned...
Mwahahahah I hid that so well.
-
Maynard Ferguson - "Birdland" (The Weather Report)
The Manhattan Transfer - "Birdland" (The Weather Report)
Double Cover'd! I just really like that song.
Cake - "I Will Survive" (Aretha Franklin)
-
Just because I really don't know many cover songs
State Radio- The Harder They Come(Jimmy Cliff)
The Casual Fiasco- Me And Julio(Paul Simon) melded together with Leaving On A Jetplane(John Denver)
both are live things.
oh oh oh
Sublime- Hong Kong Phooey
-
tortoise and bonnie prince billy - thunder road
damn, that is a good song.
-
No question.
the Revolting Cocks - - Do You Think I'm Sexy? (Rod Stewart)
Nine Inch Nails - - Get Down, Make Love (Queen)
(the second best NIN song in my opinion, next to "I'm Afraid of Americans")
and, of course
Bauhaus - - Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
-
Isn't "I'm Afraid Of Americans" a Bowie song?
The three best covers in the world are:
Goldfinger - "99 Red Balloons" (the version with the German in it)
William Shatner - "Common People"
The Walkmen - "There Goes My Baby"
BAM. Goldfinger's adds so much damn energy to the song you can't help but love it, Shatner's reading of Common People pretty much drips with venom, and The Walkmen's "There Goes My Baby" basically sounds like if whoever did the song initially had done it right. You know, instead of stupid.
-
Afraid of Americans is indeed a Bowie song but NIN do it live with him some times. It's excellent.
-
Cake - "I Will Survive" (Aretha Franklin)
*cough*
Hey was anyone else into the Young Gods? Their version of Kurt Weill's 'Alabama Song' pisses over eg. Bowie and The Doors' efforts... Crazy shit. Not that I've listened to it in maybe a decade. :o
I'd also like to send out a big "fuck you" to Nick Cave for lack of services rendered to eg. 'Henry Lee', 'What A Wonderful World' and ... even his version of 'Black Betty' (despite being immeasurably better than that horrible disco rock version that everyone knows).
-
Oh yeah, also "fuck you" to the Presidents of the USA, or more specifically to their fans, for getting all excited about a punky "ironic" version of The Buggles' 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. Yeah, like the original was really heartfelt ... and only accidentally kitch, right? Sure... dicks.
Actually, fuck that whole phenomenon of rocking up pop songs and supposedly making them more credible / listenable.
-
My friends band recently played a rocking, near metal cover of The Pussycat Dolls' "Don't ya", with the singer acting like he was having a mental breakdown screaming "god I wish my girlfriend was hot like her" on the top of his lungs.
Personally, I thought it was hilarious. Stupid, but hilarious.
Of course, I was smashed at the time.
-
SikTh - Tupelo
Dunno if anyone's said already:
Johnny Cash - Hurt/In My Life
-
Kai, have you HEARD the Crispin Glover version? It borders on reasoning for committing him to a mental institution moreso than an actual song cover...
-
The Crispin Glover version gives me nightmares.
I can't believe I didn't think of this until now, but Petra Haden does the best covers ever! There are no instruments, she just makes all the noises with her mouth. I just picked up her version of "The Who Sell Out." If you check out her myspace, there are a couple different covers. Who can pass up a weird a'cappella/beatbox version of Thriller?
-
Kai, have you HEARD the Crispin Glover version? It borders on reasoning for committing him to a mental institution moreso than an actual song cover...
No. I just generally like to make outlandish claims with no actual information to back it up. Because I'm just hardcore like that.
But The Residents' version is pretty interesting/weird.
-
Ooh, I got a good one.
Against All Authority - Centerfold (originally J. Geils Band)
-
But The Residents' version is pretty interesting/weird.
I'll have to look it up.
-
Oh, most of RATM's Renegades album, but in particular:
Ghost Of Tom Joad (Springsteen)
and
Maggie's Farm (Dylan)
-
But The Residents' version is pretty interesting/weird.
I'll have to look it up.
and I'm probably going to look up Crispin GLover.
Yay.
-
What about Crispin Glover covering "Ben" by the young Michael Jackson?
-
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
-
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
I can't stand the original. I like some very Eighties music, but that is just too Eighties for me.
Although I really must buy Songs From The Big Chair..
-
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
I like them both for different moods. But if I was only allowed to keep one I'd keep the Tears for Fears.
-
Walk On By - The Stranglers
...has got to be my favorite cover of all time.
-
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
I prefer the Gary Jules version because I have some very fond memories of it.
Memories of seeing Donnie Darko for the first time and trying to figure out what the HELL I just saw.
-
I'm sure the fact that I detested the movie might eliminate that "fond memory" factor.
-
Ohhh:
Beatles - Long Tall Sally/Dizzy Miss Lizzy/Twist And Shout
-
Kai, have you HEARD the Crispin Glover version? It borders on reasoning for committing him to a mental institution moreso than an actual song cover...
That whole damn album is over the edge.
To that end, I'm gonna suggest Dokaka.
http://www.myspace.com/dokaka
I wish his King Crimson covers were up on his MySpace.
-
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Yeah for sure. Gary Jules sounds to me like he's just turned it into one of REM's slow numbers a la things like 'Nightswimming'. It's too weepy for me, and way too 90s. ;)
-
This idn't actually a cover, but
No Easy Love - Annie (Shakatak's Easier Said than Done)
-
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
I like the more acoustic sounding stuff, but I can see why you'd like the TFF version more
-
This idn't actually a cover, but
No Easy Love - Annie (Shakatak's Easier Said than Done)
Then in what sense does it fit into the thread?
I like Echoes by Pink Floyd. It's not actually a cover, but I can post it, right?
-
The lyrics are different, but the music is the same and Annie has said that is is basically a cover version.
-
I almost shit myself laughing when I heard Children of Bodom doing Oops I Did It Again.
It is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my life.
Oh...well next to Rammstein covering Barbie Girl.
-
You know that wasn't Rammstein, right?
-
well I know now, I had assumed it was rammstein after searching "Rammstein Barbie Girl" and downloading it.
-
What about Crispin Glover covering "Ben" by the young Michael Jackson?
Oddly enough, I kinda enjoyed it, mabey it was just the cotton ball rat orgy, that was hallarious.
-
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
You kidding? Tears For Fears were awesome and that cover bored me to tears. :D
-
Ambulette - If You Go Away
I <3 Maura Davis
-
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
You kidding? Tears For Fears were awesome and that cover bored me to tears. :D
Thank you! You are awesome (this goes to the other people who agreed with me)
-
Tori Amos "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Frank Zappa "Purple Haze" (with ThingFish on vocals)
Mindless Self Indulgence "Bring The Pain"
Metallica "Astronomy"
That's about it. I don't like many covers, but these ones are quite good and nice.
-
Hmmm
(Ra) Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - Sting and the Police
Aerosmith Covers are generaly pretty good.
-
"Mad World" by Gary Jules
I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.
Nobody seems to agree with me ever.
I agree with you, to an extent... the Gary Jules version, while good in it's own right, seems to completely change the context of the song... I mean the words stay the same, sure, vut the tear for fears one felt very different.
-
Fischerspooner covering the Boredoms' "Vision Creation Newsun" theme. Mostly because it's a Boredoms cover.
-
I just heard Husker DU's cover of Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman". Not bad at all, though the original is better.
I agree with Kai on the "Mad World" debate. Though I LIKED the Gary jules version, sometimes when you make songs more audible, they make less sense...
-
weee, people agree with me.
I am pretty opinionated, because a friend of mine plays the piano and any chance he gets he will play the Gary Jules version. and, you know, I really like Tears for Fears.
Also:
Type O Negative - Hey Pete (a cover of Hendrix's Hey Joe, which is also conveniently a cover). And their cover of Paranoid and Black Sabbath are awesome.
-
You know that wasn't Rammstein, right?
Who sung it then? I have that song listed as being by Rammstein.
-
I do believe a German band named Die Heideroosjes.
p2p services are pretty much a bastard when it comes to mislabeling songs.
-
Apparently Xiu Xiu is going to be covering "Don't Cha'" by the Pussycat Dolls, this will be amazing.
-
The Biggest Lie- Bright Eyes (Elliot Smith)
Across the Universe- Fiona Apple (the Beatles)
-
While My Guitar Gently Weeps- Jake Shimabukuro (All Ukelele-check it out)---

Oh, man, thank you for that, I saw it a while ago and lost the link. Awesome.
-
David Byrne's live cover of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody".
...What?!? He took it and made it the perfect congafied folk dancy hoedown that Whitney could only dream of making!

If that guy does not get laid IMMEDIATELY after playing that each and every time he does it, there is no justice in this world.
-
agreed.
-
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
I totally didn't know that was a cover until yesterday. Originally done by The Knife.
-
There's actually a better version of the Gary Jules version than the single version on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, but TFF still owns all.
I mean, even if someone did do a really awesome cover, it's one of those songs that just sounds right. Like Love Will Tear Us Apart: no-one will deny that Swans cover is brilliant, but it could never beat the Joy Division version, and nothing ever could.
Also, my dad saw TFF when they were a pub band. I HATE that guy.
-
I want to punch your dad in the face. Lucky bastard.
-
Save it for his anecdote about when his band had to support the Damned at the last minute.
-
POSTULATE: Ben Folds' cover of "Bitches Ain't Shit" is the single greatest thing to ever happen to music.
-
that cover is amazing.
-

Yat-kha's Tuvan throat singing version is pretty exceptional, nonetheless. MP3 here:
http://www.yat-kha.com/html/what/yat_kha_cd_recovers.php
Still, I basically agree.
-
If that guy does not get laid IMMEDIATELY after playing that each and every time he does it, there is no justice in this world.
Hell, I'd fuck him.
Does anyone want to yousendit me the original? I've never heard it and I want to.
-
That Joy Division cover right there kind of makes my insides uncomfortable.
-
That's what you get listening to someone sing two notes at once. Really, really, low. That chorus is insane.
Re: Xiu Xiu covering 'Don't cha', that was a cover anyway. I think the Pussy Cat Dolls track is pretty awesome... but am also glad I don't listen to the radio, cos I can imagine getting sick of it.
-
I just realized that neither I nor anybody else posted Siouxsie and the Banshee's cover of Helter Skelter. It's pretty damned awesome.
-
Arab Strap's recent tour has seen them covering Bonnie Tyler's 'It's A Heartache'. It's on a par with Mogwai's covers of Sweet Leaf and Don't Cry in terms of functioning disturbingly well...then again maybe I'm just Scots-biased.
-
Jawbox - Cornflake Girl (Tori Amos) is pretty good, if you ask me.
But the best cover simply is:
Rapeman - Just Got Paid (ZZ Top)
Steve Albini covering ZZ Top? It doesn't get any better than this.
-
Steel Pole Bathtub-What I Need (The Cars)
-Wrecks the original in a somewhat punnish manner by making it sound like a car crash. Noise-rock covers of classic rock songs rule, with ZZ Top being the most covered. Spacemanspiff mentioned Rapeman's cover whilst Sonic Youth had a similar facsination as seen when they titled a song "Eliminator Jr.", whilst US Maple did a song called "Letter to ZZ Top".
-
I kind of liked it when the Cribs did a cover of Modern Way (by the Kaiser Chiefs) just because it was totally obvious that they bit off more than they could chew.
-
The Vandals - Don't Stop Me Now (Queen)
-
Sleater-Kinney and Fred Schnieder (of the B-52's) do an incredible cover of "Angry Inch" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
SIX INCHES FORWARD AND FIVE INCHES BAAACK
I GOT AN ANGRY INCH
-
We Will Become Sillouettes - Covered by the Shins
Probably the most pallateable cover of a Postal Service song since I&W did Such Great Heights.
Oh, and Run DMC "Walk this Way"
What?
-
mm i don't particularly like the shins. palatable, yes. good? sorry, i gotta disagree with ya.
sorry if this has been said already, but i can't read all that stuff X: mm love song by 311, kinda popular, but i like the slower tempo. and then of course, mr grieves by tvotr. gives me goosebumps. also wasn't there that snow patrol cover of a beyonce song? crazy, i think it was? wasn't particularly special if i recall, but the incongruency was pretty funny. especially when he starts speaking jay-z's part.
-
The entire "The director's Cut" album of Fantômas
also: Mekong Delta - Pictures at an exhibition (Mussorgsky)
AWESOME!
-
Faith No More - Easy
easily one of the greatest covers of all time. ever in the history of music.
-
The entire "The director's Cut" album of Fantômas
AWESOME!
good fuckin choice.
my favorite cover song is "O Fortuna" covered by botch.
okay, not a "song" technically, but shit. god damned if it don't rule.
-
John Coulton's earnest acoustic version of "Baby Got Back" kills me every time.
Pinhead Gunpowder's "Big Yellow Taxi" is excellent, as is Tiger Army's "the Loop" and the Living End's "Tainted Love."

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=368
Well scouted, but these aren't sped up covers, they're just well done and given more balls than the originals.
-
Oh that wasn't in response to your post, I was just pointing out the comic for humor purposes
-
This thread really makes me want to make a mix cd consisting of one song done by a ton of different artists.

This thread really makes me want to make a mix cd consisting of one song done by a ton of different artists.
You'll be wanting the mixtape thread, then.
-
You'll be wanting My Old Kentucky Blog (http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/) then. sjbrot turned me onto this page; the guy freakin' loves cover songs and has a project where he compiles them. Check out "Hallelujah," "Sympathy For The Devil," "Don't Fear The Reaper" (I forget where the brackets go) and "Love Will Tear Us Apart."
-
You'll be wanting the mixtape thread, then.
I've already got it.
I'm not quite sure why you made this response.
If you were trying to get on my case for not being topical, fuck off anal retentive boy.
If you were just trying to be helpful... uh sorry for the fuck off part.
PS: Tom Jones' cover of "Little Green Bag" is genius. It's horrible but it's genius.

Trying to be helpful. It was much more of a lighthearted jab than it appeared, but I'm used to the Something Awful forums where derailing is not tolerated, and where everyone is a sarcastic asshammer.
-
People derail here all the time. I think we should call it Skycladding.
PS: The Rilo Kiley cover of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is awesome.
-
THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO DERAIL THE THREAD AND TALK ABOUT SKYCLAD GUYS
-
DO IT
-
Does Skyclad have any cover songs?
-
I COVERED SKYCLAD ONCE
-
I COVERED SKYCLAD ONCE
I hope it was the earlier stuff, before Skyclad sold out.
-
Skyclad only "sold out" once Walkyier left.
-
I'm so proud of you guys.
-
Which is more than can be said for latter Skyclad.
-
Does Skyclad have any cover songs?
Skyclad - Come on Eileen [Dexys Midnight Runners]
Skyclad - Dreamer Deciever [Judas Priest]
Skyclad - Emerald [Thin Lizzy]
Skyclad - Master Race [New Model Army]
Skyclad - Prime Evil [Venom]
Skyclad - Swords of a Thousand Men [Tenpole Tudor]
Martins new (er), somewhat Skyclad-like, now sadly defunct band, The Clan Destined, also covered 'T.C.L.E.T.H.B.R.I.D.G.E.' by The Sons of T.C. Lethbridge.
As for covers of Skyclad, as far as I know there is only one, which is SuidAkrA's cover of 'The One Piece Puzzle'.
-
Do you have a link to the cover of Come on Eileen? I'd like to check out Skyclad a little bit at a time.
-
Muse - Feeling Good (I love Matt's voice, period.)
They Might Be Giants - New York City (Had no idea this was a cover the first time I heard it, but it's one of my favorite TMBG songs.)
Barenaked Ladies - Lovers in a Dangerous Time (I think they really improved on the original.)
Cruxshadows - Here Comes the Rain Again (Interesting rendition.)
-
Khar, is the Skyclad song 'Sins of Emission' a reference to the Testament song Sins of Omission? Because if so, badass.
-
The Hi-Fives do the worlds greatest version of Tainted Love
http://jodyanthony.com/junk/Hi-Fives%20-%20Tainted%20Love.mp3
-
Skyclad only "sold out" once Walkyier left.
I was just being a smartass. :) Seems like I get responses like mine every time I bring cover songs up with my former bandmates, though.
-
Barenaked Ladies - Lovers in a Dangerous Time (I think they really improved on the original.)
Same here. It's the only BNL song I can stand.
My vote for the Best Cover Ever would probably go to Gary Jules' "Mad World", for two reasons. One, it's better than the original by a mile, and I like the original. Two, it's how a cover should be - taking the song in a completely different direction and making it work.
-
BNL's cover of Little Green Bag with Tom Jones is far superior to their cover of Lovers in a Dangerous Time. But then, I actually like a lot of BNL's older stuff.
-
Khar, is the Skyclad song 'Sins of Emission' a reference to the Testament song Sins of Omission? Because if so, badass.
I doubt it. Skyclad were originally a thrash band, but always a very European one. I think it's probably more likely to just be a reference to/satire of the concept that Testament are also referencing.
-
Cruxshadows - Here Comes the Rain Again (Interesting rendition.)
That's a cover??? I never knew... Who's the original by?
EDIT: Futher investigation reveals Eurhythmics. And Ballrooms of Mars is by TRex... My two favourite Cruxshadows songs are covers... Ah well. You live and you learn huh?
-
CAKE's Comfort Eagle was a pretty cool cover song.
Though Reading through the thread I think my known definition for "cover song" is a bit different.
-
I REVIVE THIS THREAD!
Anyway, I am currenly listening to IronMan, covered by the Cardigans. Like that ninties band that did that popy, lovefool song...
It is wierd, yet awsome.
-
Sleater - Kinney also makes an excellent version of "More Than a Feeling"...there's also an awesome version of "Rockaway Beach" by Sahara Hotnights
Actually, the cardigans moved from their poppy sound towards a more (dare i say "indie"?), or at least, more mature music )Check their last two albums)
-
I could totally see that happening, the album is pretty good to begin with, its just that curse that the song you get famous for is the one on the album that is totally against you actual sound.
I think I even remember seing an interview on tv once with the lead singer being frustrated with the image that came with that singles sucess.
-
I don't really like covers as I prefer older songs, especially those from Bob Dylan.
The White Stripes - Isis (live)
Jack sounds like he's going to go insane near the end... they're good at covering Dylan songs
Frente! - Bizzare Love Triangle. Yes, I'm cheesy. No, I don't care
The Boy Least Lilkely To- Faith
The Mountain Goats - The Sign (but somehow the giant thing i downloaded dosen't have their NMH cover. Where do i get it?)
-
Dropkick Murphys - Amazing Grace (for all the wrong reasons)
Dropkick Murphys - Fields of Athenry
Bronson Arroyo - The Freshmen
Queen - The Great Pretender
Johnny Cash - Hurt (and I hate most country, although Cash isn't generally that bad)
Elton John - Pinball Wizard
-
The Faint - Psycho Killer
and Rilo Kiley's NMH cover seconded, along with their version of The Biggest Lie.
The Bright Eyes version of that was a little too grating, and his version of Mushaboom by Feist caused me severe physical discomfort.
-
Frodus - Explosions
Devo cover. Excellent.
-
Deftones - No Ordinary Love (Sade)
The Paperchase - God Is In The House (Nick Cave, I think)
Converge - Clean (Depeche Mode - a complete break from Converge's style, but an amazing cover)
Burn It Down - Paint It Black (Stones, of course)
-
Cat Power - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
almost unrecognisable, compare and contrast with the Britney Spears version
-
BNL's cover of Little Green Bag with Tom Jones is far superior to their cover of Lovers in a Dangerous Time. But then, I actually like a lot of BNL's older stuff.
I heard their cover of When Doves Cry before I heard the Prince version, so I think i prefer theirs. I think that makes me so white I'm albino.
-
Hi-STANDARD - "California Dreamin'" (The Mamas and the Papas)
My mother gets a look of utter hatred on her face whenever I play this for her. It is so wonderful. I wish the camera hadn't been stolen this summer.
-
People derail here all the time. I think we should call it Skycladding.
PS: The Rilo Kiley cover of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is awesome.
Where do i find it? i've got like no NMH covers
-
The band CUSH did a cover of "I Would Die 4 U" (Prince) that turned it into an old spiritual...pretty interesting, in the same way that they Johnny Cash cover of Hurt was interesting to me, that just the way the song was performed completely changed the meaning of the song...
-
Jeff Beck - Rollin' and Tumblin (Muddy Waters)
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things (Richard Rodgers)
-
The Sisters of Mercy - 1969 (Iggy & The Stooges)
Lydia Lunch - Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult)
Blackbox Recorder - Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (Bowie)
Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows (Leonard Cohen)
Beck - Diamond Dogs (Bowie)
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (As if you need to ask)
Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Virus (KMFDM)
-
I have to keep bringing this up I know, but seriously, Tatu doing 'How Soon Is Now?' is so good it makes my insides tremble.
I have no respect for musical hierarchy, I know.
-
That reminds me, the Snake River Conspiracy cover of How Soon is Now? is actually quite awesome.
-
I have to keep bringing this up I know, but seriously, Tatu doing 'How Soon Is Now?' is so good it makes my insides tremble.
Me too. I'm not sure whether it's just so awful that it's awesome, or just because it's so awful. :D
-
Opeth - Remember Tomorrow ( Iron Maiden)
Sonata Arctica - Fade to Black (Metallica)
Blind Guardian - Spread your wings (Queen)
-
I know I will get shunned for this but...
A Perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine."
It is mezmerizing.
-
I definately prefer the APC version of Imagine. Instead of being a hopeful and optomistic song, like the original, Maynard and Co. managed to turn in into a dirge...and the cynical asshole that I usually am just loves it.
-
*Sigh of reliefe*
Thank you. Finally, someone else sees it the same way I do... APC make it more reflective of the way the world really is now, which I love.
Also, Maynard James Keenan is kind of my god-like-person.
-
Blondie - 'Hanging on the Telephone' - best cover ever!
But I very much recommend BBC 1's Live Lounge album. The Sugababes cover of 'Living for the Weekend' is a particular favourite. And has anyone heard Snow Patrol do Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love'? It works, and it shouldn't, but it really does.
-
m.m.bosstones-'lights out' (angry samoans)
avail-'kiss off' (violent femmes)
propagandhi-'degrassi jr high theme song...sort of'
leatherface-'message in a bottle' (the police)
queers-'don't back down' (beach boys)
screeching weasel-'runaway' (del shannon)
emperor- 'a fine day to die' (bathory)
c.o.f- 'hallowed be thy name' (iron maiden)...more funny than favourite
mtx 'don't go breakin' my heart' (elton john)
groovie ghoulies- 'pet sematary' (ramones)
-
this thread isn't too dead yet, eh eh?
Ben Folds (Five?) - Twin Falls (Built To Spill)
I read somewhere that Ben Folds would be just happy to make a Built To Spill cover band.
William Shatner - Common People (Pulp?)
and oh my god, Shael Riley does so many wonderful covers. http://shaelriley.com/ or he put a bunch on craigslist for download. http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/crs/240415064.html something about Wii points....
-
Devo - (I can't get no) Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)
Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
Jeff Buckley - Hallullujiah (Cohen) I give up, I can't spell
Nico - The End (The Doors) It's over-gothy, but in spots it really works.
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (Bowie)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Helter Skelter (Beatles) It's always their cover of "Dear Prudence" people talk about, but I have a preference for this cover.
Pavement did the only cover of "The Killing Moon" I will tolerate. STOP COVERING THIS SONG.
I'd say Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower" but that's not fair, as I haven't heard the original.
Also, I saw a Youtube clip of Faye Wong doing "Bohemian Raphsody." It was... interesting.
-
I have to keep bringing this up I know, but seriously, Tatu doing 'How Soon Is Now?' is so good it makes my insides tremble.
Me too. I'm not sure whether it's just so awful that it's awesome, or just because it's so awful. :D
Ha ha, my sister LOVED Tatu. I could not stand them. At all. Yet this song was tolerable. I found out it was a cover song, and I said to myself, "If these... "Smiths" can create a song so good they can't fuck it up, they must be GODS."
Fell short of god status, but I do like the Smiths.
-
love spit love did a cover of how soon is now, and that wasn't too bad. the tatu version wasn't really awful! then again i love me some pretend russian lesbians.
-
Devo - (I can't get no) Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)
Definitely that's my favorite cover ever. It completely obliterates one of the greatest songs of all time and invents New Wave out of the rubble.
My runner-up would be the Pixies cover of the Beatles' "Wild Honey Pie." It takes one of the Beatles' seemingly most uncoverable songs and serves the Pixies perfectly, n that it's basically a vehicle for primal screams from Frank Black (HONEY PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, HONEY PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!)
-
....so, uh, is there a way I can get ahold of that?
-
several, including purchasing the rather excelllent Pixies At the BBC album.
-
The Sisters of Mercy - 1969 (Iggy & The Stooges)
Lydia Lunch - Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult)
Blackbox Recorder - Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (Bowie)
Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows (Leonard Cohen)
Beck - Diamond Dogs (Bowie)
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (As if you need to ask)
Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Virus (KMFDM)
Speaking of Bowie, the acoustic versions done by Seu Jorge for The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou are freakin' awesome, especially Queen Bitch and Life On Mars
-
I'm definitely a big fan of these covers, some of which have already been mentioned:
Count Zero - The Killing Moon (Echo and the Bunnymen)
The Flaming Lips - Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
Pilate - Fairytale of New York (The Pogues)
Cake - I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
Seu Jorge's David Bowie tracks
Reverend Horton Heat - Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash)
-
dresden dolls - pretty in pink (psychedelic furs)
The Dresden Dolls do some good covers. I really liked the versions of "Amsterdam" (Jacques Brel), "War Pigs" (Black Sabbath), and "Such Great Heights" (The Postal Service) they did when I saw them live. However, I saw a video of them doing a cover of "Two-Headed Boy" (Neutral Milk Hotel) and it made me cringe. I'm not sure I've ever heard an acceptable cover of an NMH song. Wait, no, that's a lie... The Mountain Goats. But that's different. I am currently trying, and failing, to find this furs cover online. Dammit.
neutral milk hotel - i love how you love me (phil spector)
This cover is fucking beautiful. God yes.
stars - this charming man (the smiths)
I just downloaded this to give it a listen and it's quite lovely, actually. I like Stars, and that's one of my favorite Smiths songs (the fast version with the Morrissey Squeal, more so than the slower one) aaand somehow they go together well.
In addition:
David Bowie - See Emily Play (Pink Floyd)
Pavement - The Killing Moon (Echo and the Bunnymen) yes yes yes yes whoever mentioned this one.
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (Bowie, dude) yes yes yes again to whoever mentioned THIS one
Nouvelle Vague - Human Fly (The Cramps)
The Pixies - Head On (The Jesus and Mary Chain)
All of Seu Jorge's Bowie covers are amazing.
Also, I heard a cover of Life on Mars? recently, by some (Norwegian? Swedish? Icelandic? Something...) chick whose name I cant remember, but it was quite good.
-
Paramore's cover of the Foo's My Hero sounds good.
Sting - Fields of Gold (could be the Police too, I don't care.)
Weird Al - Bohemian Polka (brilliant)
And Mad World by Gary Jules. Curl up in a corner and rock backwards and forwards delight.
And if anyone could help me, there's another cover of Gin and Juice I found on an old unlabelled CD.
Its a ska cover of the song, which sounds pretty good, and if you've heard it you'll know that it has quite sloppy rhythm to it. Can anyone give me the band?
