Title: Music for studying.
Post by: E. Spaceman on 15 May 2006, 22:04: So, do you listen to music while studying?

I normally do, otherwise I become distracted by ambient noises.
I generally listen to either Post Rock of the lively variety (Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, etc) or electronic (Avalanches, Royksopp , etc) although !!! are also a nice choice which helps keeping me awake.

Same here. I especially can't listen to Belle and Sebastian, the Mountian Goats, Nick Cave or the Eels. The lyrics are always more interesting than what I'm trying to do.

Then again, given my grades this term, maybe those aren't the best study choices...

It's usually smokething calming/mellow or conversely electronic. Noise pop works sometimes too. Mogwai, The Album Leaf (which was my chemistry cd for the longest time), American Analog Set, Radiohead, Tortoise, sometimes BSS are the more mellow stuff. Sometimes when my concentration's really high I put on Jawbreaker, Modest Mouse, Slint or Neutral Milk Hotel.

More dance music would be groups/people like The Chemical Brothers, The Go! Team, Kid Koala, DJ Shadow, Fischerspooner, Royksopp.

Post by: eternie on 16 May 2006, 09:10: I listen to music that doesn't have prominent vocals so I can't get distracted, as I love to sing along to things and tht distracts me. Quiet stuff is best. It blocks out everything else.

However, stuff that works best is usually either things with long songs so that the time doesn't just disappear, or just any proggy stuff that I can't sing along to or owt. The Mars Volta generally fill both those categories, and Pink Floyd tend to as well (although I do usually sing along to them)

Post by: StrikeThePostman on 16 May 2006, 15:55: I always have something playing, as I like to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Staying up late to finish essays can actually be okay when I'm accompanied by music and a cup of tea.

I listen to things that are comforting, like The Mountain Goats, M. Ward, and Vashti Bunyan. Some oddballs (Dylan, The Microphones) are thrown in to make sure I don't fall asleep. ;)

It really depends on my mood at the time as to what i listen too. Sometimes i go for the crazier stuff like System of a Down, Killswitch Engage and Trivium. Other times, i go for stuff like The Chillout Sessions albums and Coldplay.

That is, if i actually do any study at all, i find it difficult to study for exams, as i tend to remember a lot of what i learn without any problems, so i can get into an exam and regurgitate everything i have learnt no problemo. Some people don't like this technique, but i seem to be getting 85% plus on my papers, so it works!

I concur wholeheartedly. Explosions especially. Sometimes Pelican's pretty good for it too.

Why the eyebrow raise? By crazier i mean, louder, something that would normally allow for lack of concentration.

Ok, now that I have that out of my system, I typically listen to what I normally listen to - this means metal. Most frequently through my CD player while studying is Samael - Reign of Light, though The Old Dead Tree - The Perpetual Motion has been enjoying some time of its own.

Post by: penpen17 on 18 May 2006, 06:44: I listen to a lot of post-rock, mostly Mogwai and sometimes Pelican. When I'm reading something really dense that I have to concentrate on, I listen to just post-rock. Vocals completely throw off my concentration.

I can also usually do pretty well with lighter indie folk as well, as long as the vocals don't get prominent enough for me to get distracted.

I find that vocals distract me, but pure music helps me concentrate.
