Link to the QC Battle Of Teh Bands page is here (http://www.questionablewiki.com/index.php/Battle_of_teh_bands). Please read the rules before voting!
-
We've realized it's pointless to fight against the endless tide of hipsterism.
More importantly, how the fuck does Incubus have 3 votes when Iron Maiden is stuck at two? INJUSTICE
-
The situation is fluid.
The following votes need timestamps:
Kai: King Crimson, Fugazi
Storm Rider: King Crimson, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
Don't worry about the timestamp being inaccurate; just as long as it's before the Round 1 deadline, the vote is still counted.
-
I did mine.
-
It's currently a tie between Arcade Fire and Pixies, but Bob Dylan is catching on fast.

Come on guys! Zappa at least has to make it to the second fucking round.
-
Zappa IS making it to the second round.
I'll vote for his solo if I HAVE to, but it's kind of unnecessary if the Mothers are going too.
-
but it would be awesome if the Final was Zappa and The Mothers VS Zappa solo.
-
why was my wiki input deleted?
-
why was my wiki input deleted?
I don't see your input in the history page, Willem, so it looks like for some reason your edit was never posted. Why don't you try voting again?
-
weird, i was sure i did everything correct. oh well, voted again.
-
edit: fix'd, votes are in.

5. Belle and Sebastian
This is 39 bands instead of 32, so I guess the point is that nobody with fewer than five votes is moving on at this point.
Also, I'm so tempted to add Coldplay (not that I think they'd get anywhere but y'know) but I won't.
-
Also guys, be sure to check the page again after you've already voted, because there might be new bands on the list that you didn't see or weren't there before.
-
Based on input from various persons, I propose we make the following changes to Round 2 and beyond:
Seed the top 16 bands and bracket them against the bottom 16 chosen randomly. If multiple bands are tied for the bottom 16, choose randomly among them.
The winner of each band vs. band matchup will be the one with the most votes. Everyone can vote once in each matchup.
The brackets would look like this:
Sorry about the width.
Also, change Round 3 through Finals to 3 days a piece rather than a week. Since 8 or less votes will be cast each round, a week seems excessive.
Objections? Comments? Assuming people are generally ok with these changes, I'll make them to the wiki site late tonight. The bracketed/seeded rounds are going to make this a lot more fun and dynamic than the one vote/per band/per round that I suggested initially. For one thing, band vs. band matchups are going to be fun, and for another, more votes will be cast by each voter.
-
See, this is what it should've looked like BEFORE Kyuss got eliminated, because they can blow 50% of the bands on the current list completely out of the water.
-
Nothing is eliminated yet. Still 3 days to nominate and vote for any band you want.
-
Shit, Kyuss is up there and I missed it all this time? fuck. I am totally going blind.
Voted.
-
The first round of the knockck out looks fairly huge would it be easier to do it in two halfs, each with a 3 day opening or is that just a pointless extention of the time needed?
I'm not bothered either way to be honest just making sure that it wont get confusing on the wiki page with loads of matchups ?
Also how are we going to choose which artists progress if 25 have the same number of points with only 5 spaces left to fill?
-
I think a week to vote for 16 matchups in Round 2 is sufficient. There are really two ways to handle your second question, how to determine who is included if multiple teams are tied for 32nd place with equal votes.
The first to randomly select teams.
The second is to include tied teams in 3 band brackets in Round 2.
I'm more inclined to randomly select teams since that's easier, but if enough people want to have 3 band brackets, then I will do that instead.
Incidentally, a similar situation will arise if, in any given bracket, both teams are tied. In this situation, I definitely think that both bands should progress to the next round for a three team (or possibly four team -- if both brackets end up tied) round. Where there is a three team bracket, I envision each voter casting one vote for each of the three teams.
Thoughts?
EDIT: With regard to the wiki page getting confusing, I'm not anticipating any problems. The scoreboard will be at the top, and Round 2 would look like this:
BATTLE #1
[1st Seed] vs. [Random]
Voting for [1st Seed]:
Voting for [Random]:
BATTLE #2
[15th Seed] vs. [Random]
Voting for [15th Seed]:
Voting for [Random]:
etc.
Each Battle will be a section heading, so hyperlinks to each battle will be available at the top of the wiki page.
EDIT2: I'm going to pull random numbers off the www.random.org generator to determine matchups and which teams are included in the case of a tie for the bottom rungs. I'll provide screenshots of the random number generation on request to keep the process transparent.
-
I'd like to be an asshole and point out that Elliott Smith's name is spelt like this. Not with one t. This thread's driving me mad for this very reason.
KTHXBYE - LOVE JULIA.
-
Elliott says:
Thank-you Julia, it was driving me crazy too.
-
See, this is what it should've looked like BEFORE Iron Maiden got eliminated, because they can blow 100% of the bands on the current list completely out of the water.
Fixed.
-
Seeding and bracketing is now on the page. I tried to keep the instructions as simple as possible so that this didn't start to become boring work. Please pose questions and comments here or on the discussion page.
Also I kept Rounds 2 and 3 at one week a piece, and reduced future rounds to 3 days. This means that at least 2 days of Round 2 will not fall on an extended July 4 weekend so that Yanks can get their Coldplay votes in.

Battle of teh bands update Thursday, June 29th, 10:40am EDT
Voting for Round 1 ends tonight at 11:59pm EDT. Get your final votes in!
-
Dude, if 'Trane is fair game, then you better be putting out for Ella and Billie. Whom I just added.
-
That was supposed to have read "Lady Day". My bad.
-
Vote for the Cocteau Twins! And My Bloody Valentine, who should totally be beating a bunch of those 6 voted folks.
-
You know what sucks? I wanted to vote for the Dresden Dolls, but I couldn't figure out how to properly add my name to the list.
HMPH.
-
I entered your vote for you. For future reference, click edit, then make a space under the last entry and type "#~~~~".
-
If you are registered just click edit on the right of the bands name and add this to the list:
#~~~~
edit: moiche beat me to it
-
Vote for Thelonious Monk, come on people!
-
Hm. I've been registered to the Wiki, but could not quite figure that out! Thanks, guy!
-
Round 2 has begun!
-
Battle #2: Jimi Hendrix(15s) vs. Led Zeppelin
Battle #6: Godspeed You! Black Emperor(1s) vs. Frank Zappa Solo
Battle #14: The Smiths (8s) vs. Fugazi
OH FUCK YOU!!!!!!!! (this is with tongue firmly in cheek)
-
I am totally expecting things to get violent. I won't be voting this round forward because I don't want my impartiality questioned.
-
Actually, I'm abstaining from voting in #5 #8 and #14, I am a coward.
-
The Smiths have a special place in my heart, thant prevents subjectivity.
-
GY!BE Vs. Frank Zappa solo?
The Smiths Vs. Fugazi??
Jimi Hendrix Vs. Led Zeppalin???
John Coltrane Vs. Black Sabbath????
Its like choosing which one of your children dies.
-
#2 and #13 are so unfair...
-
Coltrane Vs. Sabbath?
You are a terrible terrible person. Now I have to choose.
-
Bwhahaha, Wilco is getting reamed.
-
Oh dear. Radiohead vs. The Decemberists is extremely unfair since a large percentage of the world looks very highly at Radiohead.
Nonetheless, my vote went to The Decemberists because I love them. I won't say more, lest I start some sort of eFight.
-
It should be noted that the point of the seeding/bracketing was to maximize the unfairness in Round 2 and save the drama for later rounds. Still, looks like there will be a few upsets.
-
As I mentioned on the discussion page, I voted for the Decemberists because I hate Radiohead, not because I really give a damn about their own merits.
-
I'd like to apologize to Kraftwerk, since I haven't listened to them enough to give them my vote.
Wow, Sonic Youth are getting kicked out of this sooner than I would've thought. Sucks that they were placed against the Beatles. Same with Wilco and Bob Dylan.
But, just to buck the trend, The Arcade Fire beating the Doors? WHY?
-
Then you should be educating yourself now! Comeone people, Daft Punk would NOT EXIST if not for Kraftwerk. I love Daft Punk- LOVE them but still: its got to be Kraftwerk.
You can limewire a lot of their music and I'd be happy to post mp3s if people don't feel like they've heard enough to vote for them.
Kraftwerk is only behind 7-10- they're still in it!
-
Dark Flame, rest assured, there is Kraftwerk on that mix cd and YOU WILL ENJOY IT SO VOTE KRAFTWERK SRSLY
-

The video to 'The Robots' underlines this point very, very, very heavily.

Voting in Round 2 will end (edit: tomorrow night) at 12:00am EDT.
Please note, if you don't hit the edit button before 12:00am EDT (edit: tomorrow night), your vote will not be counted, even if the time stamp gives a time prior to 12:00am EDT. We've got a few battles going down to the wire, so this should be entertaining.
-
It's depressing that our special battle of the bands is going to end in pretty much the same way as the shitty "best 100 bands EVAR" Channel 4 TV shows...
I was hoping it'd be like
"So, the official best band ever, according the QC forums is.... 'Obscure Pinewoood Band of mishmashed Ironies: The Band' "
-
Let this be a lesson to you all: we as a group are not that special. Of course, what if Tommy's posting of the trends galvanizes people to vote for the more "obscure" bands remaining? What if that was Tommy's plan all along?
Tommy, I've got Karl Rove on the phone -- he says he could use a man like you.
-
Because they actually released more than two albums?
-
I'm thinking the Beatles would pull ahead of Led Zeppelin.
-
they should.
-
We should do a "Best Band Going" battle. The goal would be to judge bands based on the material they're presently producing.
For a band to be nominated they must:
-presently touring or recording
-have put out an album in the last 4 years
The bands should only be judged on their recent albums and present touring act.
Something like that would get rid of all the usual acts that dominate these and open the door for a ton of random bands.
-
Then you should be educating yourself now! Comeone people, Daft Punk would NOT EXIST if not for Kraftwerk. I love Daft Punk- LOVE them but still: its got to be Kraftwerk.
True, but with that kind of arguement, you could also say that we should be voting for Paul McCartney's grandaddy. I'm sure he wasn't a terrible guy, but just because he was the cause for much good music in the future doesn't mean he should be recognized as the best.
-

-
I stand corrected.
-
I love Kraftwerk- LOVE them but still: its got to be Daft Punk.
The videos on the Palm Directors Label DVDs underline this quite heavily.
fix'd
Also, jcknbl: please enjoy this piping hot WTF-Pie I've baked for you, and while we savour it please tell me all about your confusing picture.
-
I thought it was pretty obvious I wasn't talking about causality in that post. I'm talking about how the cultural and musical inovations of Kraftwerk are a very significant part of DP's act. This means two things
First, you can't get out of voting for Kraftwerk by just saying that you like Daft Punk's style or aesthetic better because Daft Punk GOT their aesthetic and style FROM Kraftwerk. So not only are those not unique reasons to vote for Daft Punk, they're actually good reasons to vote for Kraftwerk; Kraftwerk gets credit for some of Daft Punk's coolness.
Second, this fact pretty clearly demonstrates how much more important and influential Kraftwerk is. That Daft Punk was so influenced by Kraftwerk just underscores this point. Like if I you were to compose this really sweet song- and I came a long and made a few production changes and after I was done the song was better you wouldn't then say that I'm the better musician.
Hell, Daft Punk takes a lot of their stuff from samples anyway. http://www.stylehiphop.com/funk-type-house_fr.html
The originality battle isn't even close.
Edit: The picture. Its a man. Made out of straw,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawman
-
Only when you come to terms with the fact that everyone participating is working off their own definition of "best band" can you approach buddha-nature.
-
So you guys get Big Love all the way out there in Great Britain, huh?
-
Don't even get me started on Gallo. As an actual film student, I am ashamed to say that man calls himself a film maker let alone an artist.
I still watched The Brown Bunny for Chloe though.
-
Buffalo '66 was decent. It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, but I stand by Ebert's original assessment of The Brown Bunny though.
-
So you guys get Big Love all the way out there in Great Britain, huh?
Starts soon apparently. I saw an ad for it.
-
Please note that I'm seeing at least one person who is voting on QCWiki under a name that has never posted on the QC forums. Unless these persons have registered under a different name for QCWiki for some reason, I won't be counting their votes at days end. My concern is obviously ballot stuffing.
-
Buffalo '66 was decent. It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, but I stand by Ebert's original assessment of The Brown Bunny though.
Better watch out, or else Gallo will curse you with cancer as well.
-
ROUND 3 HAS BEGUN
-
These pairings are intense. I'm gonna hold off on voting for a lot of them- Zeppelin, Radiohead, Dylan and the Beatles could have very well ended up as the final four if the brackets had worked out differently- I have no idea how to vote.
Also, what standard do you use to compare Coltane and the Pixies?
-
The Verner-Herschelstein awesomosity differential of course!
*rolls eyes*
-
The standard where you don't compare, you just decide which one you like more.
-
I use the same as with any other pairing.
Fuck bands they influenced, originality, ideology or anything other than "which would I rather listen to?" by which Pixies wins by a slight margin.
-
Oh god, my brain is weeping after choosing Dylan over the Beatles...
I just love Dylan's best over the Beatles' best. Such a hard choice.
-
Yeah, I had to make the same choice. Their bad stuff balances each other out (The Beatles early cliche pop albums vs Dylans later 'hey I found Jesus!' stuff) but I think Dylan at his best is just a bit better than the Beatles.
Hardest choice for me personally was The Smiths vs Joy Division.
-
Kraftwerk? What tge hell?
-
What about Kraftwerk?
I had to go with The Beatles, just because Abbey Road is literally my favorite album of ALL TIMEZ
-
The Verner-Herschelstein awesomosity differential of course!
*rolls eyes*
Is the verner-herchelstein awesomosity differential the one where you name hamsters after each member in each band, train the hamsters in a variety of armed and un-armed combat, then make them fight in an arena filled with deadly traps, wherein the last hamster standing will determine the best band? If so, that is totally the differential that I would use.
-
Beatles vs Dylan. Doors vs Velvet Underground. Joy Division vs The Smiths. Radiohead vs ... nothing much in their half of the draw.
Am I the only person screaming "BULLSHIT GODDAMN FIX!!!!" at this point?
-
Shit, wait, guys. Is there a battle of the bands going on now? How'd we miss this?
-
. . . Are you serious? It's been going on for like 2 weeks. Link is at the top of this thread.
-
There are three ways this will end up.
Beatles vs. Radiohead
Beatles vs. Neutral Milk Hotel
Beatles vs. Johnny Cash
There's no way the Beatles get beat from the look of things. The Pixies are the best bet to beat them. I still can't believe John Coltrane is being trounced so soundly by them.
-
. . . Are you serious?
I know. This has been overshadowed by the drama going on in the I Like Fish forum.
-
I just wanted to post how disappointed I am in all you for voting for Pixies instead of John Coltrane. Pixies are great...but JOHN FUCKING COLTRANE PEOPLE!
-
I just wanted to post how disappointed I am in all you for voting for Pixies instead of John Coltrane. Pixies are great...but JOHN FUCKING COLTRANE PEOPLE!
Indeed. Where are our minds?
(Answer: not liking Coltrane so much, is where. Frank Black is da man.)
-
Jazz legend or... uhh did I mention JAZZ LEGEND?
Ken Burns is scowling at all of you right now.
-
Jazz legend or... uhh did I mention JAZZ LEGEND?
Since when did liking jazz become compulsory?
-
Its not. I just simply think John Coltrane is brilliant and wish more people did. But if you don't like jazz, thats fine with me.
-
Actually, I thik Coltrane is brilliant, but Legend status is something I don't think should matter.
-
VOTING ON ROUND 3 ENDS 12:00AM TONIGHT
-
It is not too late to vote for Kraftwerk!
-
If Radiohead wins, this forum fails.
-
Actually, all this bitterness about Fugazi, Radiohead, Zeppelin and others hides one very important thing:
NEITHER COLDPLAY, OASIS OR THE MOTHERFUCKING ARCTIC MONKEYS ARE THERE, THIS IS A WONDERFUL PLACE
-
E. Spaceman speaks the truth.
-
THE QUARTER-FINALS HAVE BEGUN
Just 3 days for this round, folks (and all future rounds). Note that The Doors vs. Velvet Underground (15s) vs. The Beatles (6s) is a three-way race due to The Doors and Velvet Underground having tied in the previous round.
-
Actually, all this bitterness about Fugazi, Radiohead, Zeppelin and others hides one very important thing:
NEITHER COLDPLAY, OASIS OR THE MOTHERFUCKING ARCTIC MONKEYS ARE THERE, THIS IS A WONDERFUL PLACE
But it does not hide the most important thing, viz. if Radiohead win, this forum fails.
When I saw that Shithead had won despite Led Zep having been pounding on them a day or two ago, due to a sudden influx of people with red name, I admit I thought someone had been sockpuppeting. Nope; turns out they're real hipsters with no taste. How depressing.
Re: the tie. Last year I ran a six-week long multi-stage poll to find out what people on another forum believed to be the best movie ever made. I dealt with ties by the simple expedient of never voting myself. That way, if there was a tie I could make a casting vote.
-
When I saw that Shithead had won despite Led Zep having been pounding on them a day or two ago, due to a sudden influx of people with red name, I admit I thought someone had been sockpuppeting. Nope; turns out they're real hipsters with no taste. How depressing.
Other people's musical tastes depress you? Sorry dude, but that just might be the definition of a hipster.
-
So, my internet access right now is via a blackberry, and it doesn't seem too fond of the wiki, so could someone put me down for Radiohead, The Doors (the only band I'd vote for over The Beatles), Neutral Milk Hotel, and Joy Division? I'm on vacation, and chances of me getting to a real computer are slim, so the help would be greatly appreciated.
Stupid thumb keyboard...
-
TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF VOTING IN THE QUARTERFINALS. ALL VOTES MUST BE IN BY 12:00AM EDT.
Edit: Entered Dark_Flame votes at his request.
-
Ugh Johnny Cash is so superior to Radiohead. This is frustrating. Everything else is working out to plan. Neutral Milk Hotel slips in with the darkhorse performance. Keep going, little pony!
-

Who the hell are they?
-

Isn't NMH one of the most revered indie bands? I certainly love them, but REM is better to me.
-
Yes they are revered, but there's bound to be people here (See Jedit) that have never heard any of their stuff compared to say a Beatles or Radiohead.
-
Rhapsody link to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by NMH here.
Note: you don't need to create an account to play it. Just press play, and the select "Play now" on the pop-up window. I think it gives you something like 30 freebie songs before it starts charging. Not really sure because I'm a Rhapsody subscriber.
-
when bob dylan lost I quit.
-
The Semifinals have begun. Cast your vote in the next three days. Votes must be cast by July 19, 2006, 12:00am EDT.
-
Semifinals end tonight. All votes must be cast and entered by 12:00am EDT.
-
This is depressing. Beatles vs. Radiohead? Could this get anymore VH1?
-
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed in the outcome here.
Just to stir it up abit, I'm going to switch my vote to Joy Division. Because I am ace like that.
-
This is going to happen in almost any dicussion of canonized popular music. The Beatles were really fucking good and really fucking influential. What are you going to do?
I think we should try it again at some point but disqualify bands that have appeared in one of Rolling Stone's "greatest..." lists.
-
THE FINALS HAVE BEGUN!
Vote for 1st place and 3d place bands. Voting ends July 21st.
-
I voted for the Joy Division Vs. Radiohead, but I'm going to wait to see how Beatles Vs. Neutral turns out before deciding there.
-
oh god, are all you hip kids now going to vote against radiohead and the beatles because they're too cliche to win? (well, i know that some of you voted for jd anyway, but still..)
-
Damn, I didn't see that coming. I thought the finals would be Radiohead v. The Beatles for sure.
-
oh god, are all you hip kids now going to vote against radiohead and the beatles because they're too cliche to win? (well, i know that some of you voted for jd anyway, but still..)
Well, I don't like Radiohead. obvious Joy Division vote there. For the other one, Just for the hell of it, I'm going to see which way it goes and vote for the losing one. Because honestly? I don't care.
-
oh god, are all you hip kids now going to vote against radiohead
The hip kids are the only reason either finalist is there. This poll lost any semblance of integrity when the Band Nobody in The Wide Fucking World Has Heard Of beat the Beatles.
-
Neutral Millk Hotel aren't the band that nobody in the fucking wide world has heard of.
Just you.
-
Seriously, if you're a fan of indie rock/pop you've pretty much heard of NMH. If you're not . . . well then you probably haven't. One of my favorite blogs counted every time NMH played a show in New York City. They counted 7, with only 2 as the headliner. Unbelievable for a band that influential.
-
So, hang on, if we don't elect the Beatles as the best band, we suck?
Why bother having a goddamn battle of the bands then?
I would totally go for the idea of doing another one of these with no bands that have ever been on an NME list. Or possibly no bands that have ever produced a gold or above record.
-
I would totally go for doing this again in such a fashion as to make sure everyone who votes for or against anyone knows exactly what they're doing. I don't own a Radiohead album or a Joy Division album. I'm not voting.
As I said at the very beginning, the only way this works as far as I'm concerned is if it's organized like the Forced Listening Thread. People need to know what they're talking about.
-
Neutral Millk Hotel aren't the band that nobody in the fucking wide world has heard of.
Just you.
He's talking about Joy Division which is even more ridiculous.
-
oh fuck man
Who hasn't heard of Joy Division?
no, seriously?
-
oh god, are all you hip kids now going to vote against radiohead
The hip kids are the only reason either finalist is there. This poll lost any semblance of integrity when the Band Nobody in The Wide Fucking World Has Heard Of beat the Beatles.
Neutral Milk Hotel hasn't beaten the Beatles yet... so he HAS to be talking about Joy Division.
-
If Radiohead wins, this forum fails.
I agree.
I love Radiohead but they just... aren't the best band.
This was predictable.
-
Neutral Milk Hotel hasn't beaten the Beatles yet... so he HAS to be talking about Joy Division.
No, I was talking about Neutral Milk Hotel. I'm sure the hipsters will rise to the occasion.
Kai - when a band has never been reviewed by any UK indie music mags, I'd call that a sign that nobody has heard of them.
-
Well, Neutral Milk Hotel broke up 8 years ago, so that may have something to do.
-
Well, Neutral Milk Hotel broke up 8 years ago, so that may have something to do.
What makes you think I'm talking about recently?
-
Well, I just did a quick google and found Drowned in Sound praising them and several mentions in the bloody Guardian, not to mention NME. Your contentions, sir, are ridiculous.
-
Well, I just did a quick google and found Drowned in Sound praising them and several mentions in the bloody Guardian, not to mention NME. Your contentions, sir, are ridiculous.
OK, then, I'll just have to amend my contention to "I, everyone I know, everyone whose writings on music I have ever read and everybody I've ever heard talk about music in any forum other than this one has not heard of this band - or at least has not seen fit to mention them - regardless of how knowledgeable they are on the subject".
They're obscure. Deal with it.
-
Guys, how come it hasn't been updated? I don't know how to do this thing, but we ought to have something formal done, shouldn't we?
-
I would totally go for the idea of doing another one of these with no bands that have ever been on an NME list. Or possibly no bands that have ever produced a gold or above record.
Or, possibly, no band.
-
QC BATTLE OF TEH BANDS IS OVER
The results:
TEH WINNAR: Joy Division
Second Place: Radiohead
Third Place: The Beatles
Fourth Place: Neutral Milk Hotel
Yes, if PennyRoyal and Johnny C had submitted their votes on time, Radiohead would have won. Shame, shame, shame.

It was a pleasure. Thanks to you and to OpenJamie for constructive suggestions as the battle progressed. Especially to OpenJamie for proposing the whole endeavor in the first place.
Also thanks to everyone who participated. Hope y'all had a bit of fun.
