I'm not questioning his friends, I'm questioning his ability to actually be a talent. He's got a great voice, but that doesn't mean the stuff he performs is great. I'll be the first to admit that I hate the genre of music he performs in (I can't call it R&B because I can't remember the last time I heard modern R&B actually sound like it had blues in it.), but there are so many better performers in the genre than him.

"Rhythm and Blues" is itself an outdated term, anyway. Record companies thought it up as a shorthand for "black music" back in the '50s. So yes, much of modern R&B has little to do with blues, but that's a reflection on the genre's terminology, not the music itself.

My point was ONLY that Timberlake (in an eternal quest to be taken seriously) went and named a bunch (seriously, a bunch) of respected and well known groups as "influences," in an attempt to make people think 'Wow! He relates to David Bowie! He must be a good pop star!'
You shouldn't have to rattle off a list of "influences" to make people appreciate your music and take you seriously as an artist. Instead just release a good fricken album and let people judge it for themselves (which is why I cited the other two bands).

I had actually never heard that either, and still associated the acronym with R. and Blues. But, that definition makes a whole hell of a lot more sense for that current phase of music, so hencefourth I will associate it with that definition.
Side note this is the most ridiculous thread ever. Justin Timberlake's last album is great and if you're still bitter because he was in a silly boy band at one point (which it sounds like most of the active posters of this thread are), you should sit down.

Timbaland has produced some of the best songs in the past 5 years. It is in no way surprising, wrong or post-ironic that a lot of people who generally avoid mainstream radio music like Justin Timberlake's new stuff. All this anti-establishment b.s. going on here is so simplistic it makes me want to cry and its absurd that anyone willing to take a more complex (read: a post-high school) view of the music industry is acused of being inauthentic.

It often gets very tiring reading comments by people so hung up on pretentions that they feel that their opinions are somehow more validated than other people's. Nothing constructive is offered; s/he simply tears it down.
If it's not your thing, that's fine. But there's no reason to flatly insult it. While some people find it vapid and simple (without stating their reasons), other people just think it's fun. Music doesn't have to be groundbreaking, it doesn't have to have hidden depths of meaning, it doesn't have to be decoded or deciphered. Sometimes it can just be fun.
[As an aside, just because you think the record is simple doesn't mean much. I could record a noise rock record or a metal album in one afternoon just as easily as I could make some beats in Fruityloops, and I'll be willing to bet that you guys would eat up my noise or metal while still shunning truly good pop music.]

Its really funny that you say that right after listing a bunch of completely unknown acts and telling us that these acts are "real" dance music- which of course implitly attacks the authenticity of our preferences. The first statement completely undermines the first.

I'll admit the song is wearing thin pretty quick. Certainly no "Promiscuous Girl" or "Since You've Been Gone". Still, mainstream pop/hip-hop is in a much better place than mainstream rock.

I read a GREAT article written as if it was from a world where punk was mainstream and heavy metal was underground. It reversed all the usual critcal cliches, and even had stuff like, um, Def Leppard instead of The Replacements getting their song covered for That 70's Show

I agree with whoever was saying that music can be incredibly non-complex, and still be fun and pleasant to some peoples ears.
Justin Timberlake is a MAINSTREAM POP ARTIST. more often than not, atleast in my experience in the last decade or so that i actually listened (which admittedly has not been enough in the last 2 years) mainstream pop meant to appeal to a huge group of people isn't mean to be/doesn't need to be exclusive. Theyre trying to make music that the widest range of people can get into. A large portion of the forumgoers here are into a much smaller niche of music, and the music made here caters to you. The music made by/made for Mr Timberlake reflects the audience he's trying to appeal to, and it does a good job at getting them and more.
some people like the pop genre of music, as well as others.
Not everyone needs a pi/7 time signature, 20 layers, 80 different chords to enjoy a song.

Seriously, how can you even stand his voice? It's bearly barable in the new single with all that distortion on it. Also, where are the 'wicked beats' or whatever? I, you, or anyone could do the drums and bassline to that in Fruityloops in about half an hour, counting render time. It's commercial shite. Even dancing to it at a shite club validates its shite existence.
