Title: Good music shops in San Francisco
Post by: iamlost on 26 Jul 2006, 17:04
Hi,
I'm going to San Francisco on holiday next week, while i'm there i might get some time to go shopping and was wondering if there were any good music shops where i could pick up some more american avaliable stuff that you i don't really see in the UK like fugazi and Immortal Technique to name some off the top of my head. Are there any places that are cheap or generally good.
Also I'm considering buying an MP3 player while i'm there as Ipods are alot cheaper than in the UK, so are there any cheap electronics shops in San Francisco.

Thanks in advance.  (Also sorry for having one of those questioning posts that annoy people i have already asked google I just want to konw your personal opinions.)

It is in fact on Haight.   1855 Haight, to be precise.  Can't miss it.

The Berkeley branch is ok if you're desperate, but nothing beats the original and best.

Actually, if you consider the Berkeley Ameoba and the Rasputin less than a block away from it as a single entity, that's a pretty godly music selection right there.

That Rasputin still has the best metal selection I've ever seen in a store to date.

You must go to Berkeley. About .2 miles from the Campus down Telegraph Avenue are both Amoeba and Rasputin a block apart. Godly. Seriously.

It's less than a mile walk from the downtown berkeley bart station if you wanna head over there.

Electronic's a bit fidgety in the Rasputin...Amoeba's got separate sections for major subgenres.  Never seen a Jungle section before.

Definitely Amoeba for the music. Not only is used music cheaper but they have some harder-to-find stuff there. Parking is pretty bad there and taxis ain't cheap, so consider taking MUNI (the bus system) out there. The 71 line takes awhile to get there, but it stops about block from the store. Forget what else goes by there.

Cheap electronics? Not really cheap, but there's always Best Buy. Just don't ask the people who work there to help you unless you know exactly what you want. They're told to push certain items over other ones to make a sale, and can't be trusted to know their stuff. If you actually wanted an Apple brand iPod, go to the Apple store downtown. It's huge and worth a walkthru just for kicks.

Hardcore music shop? I really don't know about that. I'd stick with the Amoeba recomendation, and if you wanted to venture across the Bay into Berkeley you could try Rasputin.

Man, you guys are making me miss home. Boo Roseville, where you need a car to get around, and everything is generic. At least they have a Chik-Fil-A here and a Sonic being built. Sigh.

I was in SF a month ago and I bought most of my stuff from Aquarius records in the mission. It's basically a specialist experimental/weird music shop that has piles of insanely hard to find stuff. Ameoba was interesting, if overwhelming.
