Title: Alternate Music History
Post by: jcknbl on 31 Jul 2006, 23:38
Nazi Germany wins WWII and occupies Great Britain and America. We're now more than 50 years into the 1000 year Reich. What does music look like now? What musical trends and events were different?

Alternately, what if Japan occupied the American west coast?

There is only one genre of music allowed. Aryan rock. It is played every 2 hours for 15 minutes over the loudspeaker network inbetween news about rebels being crushed and violently destroyed and subliminal messages.

National Socialist Black Metal would top the charts on a regular basis.

In a cruel twist of malice, the Nazi overlords would permit 50 Cent to keep making music.

If we are going by that theory, the underground resistance would be led by the likes of Death In June and Sol Invictus.

No wait scratch that, I'll be dead too.

there's this book "vaterland", i think, that is about some guy living in an alternate universe or something where the nazis won the war. i wonder if it mentions music, i haven't read it yet.

one can only speculate about what music would look like if we'd be living in such a world. i guess the radio would be full of prussian marches and german folk songs. most other music like rock wouldn't even have been developed, except maybe underground (there used to be underground jazz-clubs in germany during ww2.), but there could never have been music comparable to the stuff we have now.

A lot of the krautrock shiznitz was a reaction of a post-WWII Germany trying to reassess their values and culture so I think that music would definately be different from krautrock as we know it. Likely be more stagnant and rigid.

I like this idea. However, I'm not Jewish and I'd never have the balls to do it.

A lot of Krautrock is static and rigid. I don't mean that derisively, just an observation. Obviously this doesn't apply to everything. I'm thinking more along the lines of Neu!, Kraftwerk, and to an extent Can, and less along the lines of Amon Duul II or Popul Vuh.

I was going to make a smart-assed comment about Rammstein, but they're kind of like their own punchline.

Rammstein.

Whoa. It just hit me. Nazi world domination radio will play Wagner. Only Wagner.
That is actually kind of awsome. Why? Because Wagner is awsome (he was also a bit of a racist, but he would'nt like Hitler one bit).

Wasn't Wagnerian music (et. al.) banned in Israel until the 90s?
