Title: Single best video game you have ever played...
Post by: RawR? on 28 Aug 2006, 23:53
What's the single best video game you have ever played without being able to drop the controller/keyboard and mouse? Or the handheld device or whatever. You get the point.

Single best game I have ever played was RE 4. Perfect game IMO. No flaws. Replay ability is excellent. And there's a lot to do in the game. Not too long, not too short. Has a good fright factor, though not as scary as games like Silent Hill. Lots of action, lots of interactivity. Always keeps you on your toes even in videos.
My Rating: 10/10
Also, try to include a review of the game (like I did).

Final Fantasy 3 (US Title). It was the most innovative game of it's day (or at least I thought so.) To this day I hook up the SNES every once in a while and play through it. I love kickin' ass with Edward and the chain saw.

This might not be the coolest game to have been in love with, but I absolutely loved Final Fantasy X...I thought that the visuals were beautiful, and the storyline was amazing...I also really loved the Max Payne series, especially 2, because of the whole film noir feel they had...for some reason, I'm less about button pushing and more about the imagery when it comes to video games

Yeah I hear ya. Something that I just [/b]love in video games is water graphics for some reason... they're just so cool to look at. And the Final Fantasy series is kick ass, no matter which one it is. xD

I have to say Legend of the Dragoon. Best game ever, hands down. Kicks the whole final fantasy series in the face. It's the game I would love to see a next gen remake of.

I really love me some Final Fantasy... ALL OF IT.

But I have never thoroughly enjoyed a role-playing game as much as when I played Final Fantasy IX. Evrything about the game was flawless to me. There are quite a bit of haters, but I suppose I must just see something in it that others don't.

Runners-up: Shadow of the Collosus, Soul Calibur III.

Final Fantasy X was probably the most beautiful looking game I've ever played, but now that I think about it, I might have even more of a soft spot in my heart for FF-8...I had forgotten about that one

FF-X was beautiful, true, but out of 10 points, I only give it 6.5.

The voiceovers were neat, but I couldn't stop thinking of Bender every time Wakka talked. Not that that was a major issue. But them not synching with much was a major downer.

I never played blitzball - never got into it 'cause I didn't like it.

The story progression was EXTREMELY linear. You couldn't go anywhere except forward, for the most part. Until you got the airship, which by then it was way too late in the game for exploration. And even then, you could only go to set places, chosen from a list. Yeah, I got Omega Ruins and all the hidden stuff. I'm not talking about that. In all other FF games you had the overhead exploratory map. Not having that in FF-X was kinda strange. I want to explore! I want to go out and do other non-story related things! FF-X provided very little of that too late.

There were too many cut scenes that you couldn't make faster.

Not enough CGI scenes.

It was too damn easy. Seriously, only 120,000hp on Braska's Final Aeon? I was done with him in 20 seconds - Tidus' break limit did about 60k, Auron's break limit did another 30k, and a doublecast of Flare finished him off. Seriously, what the hell? Once you get the ultimate weapons for a few people, the game is essentially over.

Don't get me wrong, the story was great, the sphere grid was awesome, I really enjoyed the game... Just not nearly as much as I would have liked to. It was way too easy for a Final Fantasy game.

...my 2gil worth.

No possible way for me to have a single favourite.  There are games when they come out that are later replaced by new games.  I mean, I loved HL2, but it is in no way my favourite game now (replaced by BF2 and EVE).  Soldier of Fortune 2 probably took a good solid 2000+ hours of my life.

It's a tie between Goldeneye 64, 007: The World's Not Enough, and Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES). A friend and I would play those three games every day after school, for 4 years.

Silent Hill 2

I am obsessed and deeply involved in (not in that way) the storyline of the entire series, and 2 is just the best. It has the best atmosphere, best music, best monshtars, it rocks.

Buuutt... Maybe Sonic The Hedgehog 2

It was the first game I owned, and I was amazed by it.

Doom 2, guys. The level design in that game was fiendish, there were plenty of frights, and the sheer number of enemies is something that today's games sadly lack. Seriously, I played Doom 2 a lot, and basically never got sick of it.

Gryff - Doom 2 may have had a lot of enemies, but so did RE4. Doom 2 was sick though. Also, side note: if you want a game where all you do is kill enemies, get Dead Rising. :)

FreshJive - I wouldn't play D2 for too long. That game took away years of my life and I so regret it. :/

Huh. All I do in that game is get killed and start over because I forgot to save. I mean, after I kill zombies, but still.

For me, it's torture to decide. Maybe WarCraft III. That game owned me for months. I spent my work days researching strategies. I'm never got very good at it online, though.

Big fan of Final Fantasies VI and X, too.

MechWarrior 2 will always have its place in my icy black heart.

I totally agree. I think FFIX is probably my second favourite FF game (FFVII wins on nostalgia value alone, of course) - I was very surprised to learn how few people liked it. I think it was due to those younger players like myself that had been introduced to the series by FFVII, and had gotten used to the darker, cyberpunk design that characterised VII and VIII. FFIX, with its fantasy setting, character classes, and happy-go-lucky main character drove them away. Personally, despite starting with FFVII and so no doubt missing out on many of the in-jokes and homages that were present in FFIX, I appreciate craftsmanship and loved it! It was such a breath of fresh air to play a main character that was happy and confident, for one thing. I loved the complexities of Cloud's character, but when FFVIII continued the trend with that sullen douchebag Squall (As you may gather, I despise FFVIII) I was worried that all future Final Fantasy games would conform. Luckily, Zidane seems to have shaken things up, and Tidus was considerable more loose-wound, if a tad immature. :)

As for the best games I've played, here are a few in no particular order:

1) The Escape Velocity series, especially Nova.
2) Operation Flashpoint.
3) Morrowind and Oblivion.
4) The Total War series.
5) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
6) World of Warcraft (I went cold turkey though!).
7) Battlefield 1942 + Desert Combat mod. (I haven't got round to getting BF2 yet).

And of course: Final Fantasy VII, IX and X.

FFVIII can just implode in a flurry of sewage and used condoms.

I agree, I believe I killed aeon-Jecht with one or two hits and a single limit break by Tidus. Each of my characters had completed their sphere grid section and at least two of the other sections, and Tidus, Auron and Yuna had 4 characters grids completed, along with their ultimate weapons.

I found myself thinking whistfully of Ozma from FFIX. I never defeated that bastard.

I just realized I came in here to ream on people who have gushed about the FF series (which really isn't a series, anyway), but the game I'm going to mention bears the FF name.  Sue me.

FF1?  It's a nice time-waster, I suppose.  It's not that it was innovative, though.  Basically, they combined Dragon Quest with D&D and did neither of them as well as said games.

FF2 was only recently released in English and I'll be honest... I haven't got around to playing it.  I heard that the leveling system is annoying, however.

FF3 still isn't in English.  The DS port looks nice.  Too bad I lost my DS. :(

FF4 was pretty damn good.  I enjoyed it at any rate.  I can think of a lot of serious, glaring flaws, though.

FF5 was freakin' awesome.  I love job systems in games.  Customization ftw.

FF6 was like FF5 except that instead of having 5 guys that did everything you could ever want, you just had 12 people that were specialized.  A plot with no main character is also INCREDIBLY unique and I loved it.  Best FF with a number.

FF7?  I thought it sucked.  It was FF6, rehashed in a more modern world with boring characters and "OMG 3D GRAPHICS" (and the graphics, I might add, have not withstood the test of time).  In battle, characters were pretty bland because all you had to do was switch their materia around and they instantly filled another character's role.  The story, to this day, makes little to no sense, even once someone explains the whole thing to me.  Boring emo main character, completely unoriginal antagonist.  It is on my top of "most overrated game of all time" list.

FF8?  UGH.  FF8 was a travesty.  I honestly couldn't bring myself to get past the first disc because of how horribly BLAND combat was.  Your characters didn't matter: your GUARDIAN FORCES™ did.  The difference between Zell and Squall was, wait, THERE WASN'T ONE.  Just switch their GFs around and they swapped identities in battle.  The whole dual-lives things is also a really big cliché in Japanese culture, and it was done much better in Xenogears, which I might add got it's budget slashed to make room for developers on FF8, ruining the second disc of an otherwise fantastic game.  The main enemy you don't discover until the actual encounter to kill her, and that bothers me because you SHOULD know the antagonist else whether it wins or loses makes no difference to the readers/players/audience of a book/game/play.

FF9 was pretty fun.  It went back to FF roots and worked pretty well.

FF10 was enjoyable, but altogether too easy with a forgettable plot.  Graphics were good for it's time but even a year later, it's nothing that makes me ooh or aah.

FF11 is an MMO for Final Fantasy Fanboys only, because there are many better MMOs out there, and many better ones to come out in the near future.

ANYWAY, my favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy Tactics.  Strategy RPGs are easily my favorite genre and I have yet to play another one that offered customization to the same extent that FFT had.  As soon as someone releases a strategy RPG that is based off the d20 combat system (I mean, the D&D books even discuss battles as occuring on grids, ffs), I will be in heaven.

Nonsense. It's as much a series as TV shows like Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. What it is NOT is a serial — installments of a larger work — which is what most series are even if they don't start that way.

I had a lot of hours logged on FFTA, mainly because I was traveling a bit back then, and it was definitely a great game. But it annoyed me that, starting about halfway through the main quest, I just couldn't lose. Every character on my team was an overpowered insta-killer that never failed. It got far too easy, far too early, and I lost interest when side-missions took around 45 minutes to complete, even though my team overpowered the others by so much.

Fallout and Fallout 2.

The great thing about Fallout 2 was that in the beginning, you knew you were weak.  You knew you couldn't go to this part of the map because you'd be insta-owned by a guy wielding a gauss pistol. After a while, after you've leveled up, you knew you leveled up.  Set up your character right and almost nothing could stand in your way.  I mean almost nothing, sure every now and then they may score a critical that would take you down or there would be one too many.

This world needs more post-apocalyptic rpg's.

My votes: Pokemon Red & Blue for Game Boy, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for Sega Dreamcast, and Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube.

Honorable mention for Dr. Mario 'cause it was able to draw me in by music alone, and considering the music consisted of two MIDI files, that's pretty good.

True, but if I had to pick a best one of the series, I would pick Red Alert 1.  But they are all excellent games, and more people should play them.

But I'm realy suprised not to see at least one person say Deus Ex is the best game ever - usually at least one person puts it above all the rest.  I didn't put it up there myself, becuase while it is a mighty awesome game, its not quite as good as Alpha Centauri.  And I'm still debating whether Alpha Centauri or Star Control 2 is better.

And Mikintosh, just to be an pedantic ass, Dr. Mario didn't use no gorram MIDI files.  It was a SNES game if I remember right, so it probably used tracking - which is kinda like MIDI, but not really at all.  =P

There are multiple games I could choose, but I have to say Thief: The Dark Project (or Thief Gold, since I never got the original). Why? Because it created an amazing, forbidding, and mysterious world; scared the hell out of me when I first played it (and still does, some times); and because it has a lot of kickass missions created by the community. Thief 2 might have more, and often better, fan missions, and I'm a sucker for the weather effects, but the original wins for being first, and for its darker and grittier world.

Other possible candidates: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for its great levels, and the original Legend of Zelda and Ocarina of Time for epic-ness (I never liked LTTP that much, for some reason).

It doesnt have a levelling system as such.
It definately isnt annoying - Its different, but its powerfull, logical, and very very fun.
If you get attacked, your resiliance and experience against being attacked increases - Next time it wont hurt so much, you will be slightly more adept at avoiding it.
If you cast magic, your ability at casting magic has been imporved by the experience etc.
There are no absolute levels, but rather levels on each stat that make it far more versatile and give you really diverse characters.
Unfortunately, the randomness was a bit off, and i had this one guy who got attatcked all the time, and had like 7000 hp's when everone else had 2000. lol.

FF3 is amazing; A Must play. There is a Nes thing somewhere, with the translations corrected well enough to play and massively enjoy the game.

For me, maybe The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past.
Loved it when i was 4, love it now.

I loved this old classic.
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit.  Fond memories of this game shall forever be remembered.

Okay, when I was growing up it was a two-way tie.  Since all we had was an old Commodore 64, both games come from it - back in the old days when floppy discs really were floppy.
Defender of the Crown: One of the orignal turn-based strategy games you could play, and despite having a somewhat corny plotline and being pretty predictable, it was strangely addictive.  I loved it.
The Last Ninja: Much more in-depth game, several levels each with their own challenges and weapons to collect, and little secrets that you sometimes had to find and sometimes just found as a bonus.  Never could win it, though... the final boss always beat me before I could figure out the weird orb thing.
Both games get an 8/10

In more recent times it'd have to be a three way tie...
Starcraft: RTS game, love it, will never stop loving it.  Instead of the two functionally identical teams that you get in most games (Warcraft, Dark Reign, Red Alert, Dune, etc), the three teams were completely different and added whole new balance to each level.  And the story was awesome.
Diablo II: This game just kicks ass.  I liked the Necromancer best, though the Amazon was pretty fun too.  The Druid just pissed me off.  But anyway!  Graphics are excellent, the level randomiser makes replayability almost infinite, the skill trees mean it requires a lot of planning to win, and the story is magnificent.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Do I really need to say anything?
All three get a 10/10

hands down best rpg video game ever. having the best and most immersive rpg story ever probably helped. its a shame it didn't do so well commercially.

Planescape was a DAMN good game. PC game, for the person that asked. I picked it up as one of those $9.99 games at Fred Meyers. Good buy.

My all time favorite:

River City Ransom

That's side-scrolling, beat-em-up, knock-an-enemy-down-and-then-use-the-body-as-a-weapon goodness at its best! VGCats is teh funny (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=162)

Planescape is an amazing story based RPG.  It ranks very highly on my list, but I think I'd have to put Betrayal at Krondor above it, as far as story RPGs go.  The writing in it is just so good, and it's a lot of fun to play.

That said, though, I think my favorite game of all time would have to be Dagegrfall, the second Elder Scrolls game.  Even moreso than Morrowind, you have the freedom to do whatever you want.  You can make any character you want and play it how you want.  I should probably pick up Oblivion at some point, but I'll probably wait for the price to drop.

Honestly, the best game I've played is probably Golden Sun for GBA. No, the graphics aren't great, but for a GBA game, they're pretty darn good. I loved the Djinni, and the battle system, and the gameplay, and the storyline... and just everything about it. I got it for Christmas years ago, and I remember that I started playing it shortly after lunch that day, and didn't stop until I went to bed that night, with a break for dinner in between. I was hooked...

The Zelda games were awesome as well, all of them, though I liked Oracle of Season best of the Gameboy ones. I only recently got a PS2, and all I have for it is FFX, which I adore, and Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, which is entertaining but not great. I do love Diablo and Diablo II though... they are phenomanal.

Incredible! No one mentioned the funniest game EVER!

Monkey Island

I just replayed it last week and still got me laughing like a maniac!

Then there are the obvious things like FFVII and IX (VI is also pretty good, but it lacks the nostalgia factor as I only played it afterwards on an emulator).

Mario Kart on the SNES and N64?

Behind you, a tree-headed monkey!

Heh, what a difficult question! I can't pick just one, so here's the ones that came to mind:

Xenogears
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Half-Life 2
Warcraft III
Command and Conquer Red Alert: Retaliation for the playstation (Not a great game on its own I guess, but had so much fun with multiplayer link games back in the day)

I dunno. I could likely think of many others if i thought about it too long.
Some of the above posts seem intriguing, being games I've not played. I think I'm really gonna have to find that 'Stronghold' game...

most played game- FFXI... 300+ DAYS of gametime. 75 bard, 75 black mage, 75 beastmaster... lots of jobs also very very high. I quit this and made $800 selling my character. I don't mean to brag, but I'm the man.

Super Mario World(SNES) is my favorite game ever.

AceCombat04 Shattered Skies was the only video game I shed a tear for.

Halo 1 had the second most playtime for me in a videogame for single player, second only to 007: Goldeneye.  As far as multiplayer I spent countless hours on live and at lans playing Halo 2, the better part of a year for that matter..

Super Smash Brothers (the original) is my all time favorite fighter.

FF8 is my favorite final fantasy, FFX is a close second.

Vice City was the best sandbox game ever.

Shit... the title is single best...

I've got to say Halo 2.  Hard choice, but nothing was quite that much fun.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.  Damn.  I still love it.  Fairly simple, but the game play is sweet and the story is relatively nice for a video game.

Well, as far as voice acting and dialogue, I've gotta mention the entire Legacy of Kain series. Notably Raziel's first little exchange with Kane.  *Ponders playing through again*

My favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy IX. It was my first Final Fantasy and with beautiful graphics, a rich story and characters, an interesting combat mechanic, and a huge world of wonder and power, I can't not love it. Final Fantasy IX defines immersive.

Multiplayer gaming is a very different experience though. One that must focus much more on gameplay mechanics rather than creating a world in order to be immersive, and for that I have two favorites that I can't decide between. Super Smash Brothers: Melee and Halo 2. I've played Smash for way too many hours to count with my buddies until the latest hours of the night. I'll be going to MLG as a coach in a week. I'm super excited. Halo 2 is the best FPS I've ever played. Great control and mechanics and with MLG settings, it's balanced (wow, I must seem like the biggest MLG fanboy here. I'm not really). I'll be playing this one for a good long time.

Halo 2 is the best FPS I've ever played.

I'm speechless.

It's a controversial choice, I know. And yes, admittedly, I've never played Half-Life 1 or 2. But I'm a console gamer anyway. PC gaming is just uncomfortable for me.

No PC means you've missed out on System Shock 2, the entire Marathon series(which is, of course, made by Bungie), Quake 1, and the entire Half-Life series, all of which easily rise above Halo.
Title: Re: Single best video game you have ever played...
Post by: Neuvost on 06 Oct 2006, 17:51
I've been playing Marathon lately actually! I like it, but using a mouse and keyboard is still much less comfortable for me than a good solid controller. I'm not too far into it, but I dig the story and the gameplay is alright. I feel like I'm playing a first draft for Halo, which is fun for me as a Halo fanboy. And I've enjoyed Quake 1, though I need to install that on my MacBook. In the end though, PC FPSs just feel less ... good, to me. I know a lot of people and the vast majority of the hardcore prefer them though, so to each his (or her, I guess) own.

Post by: Ozymandias on 06 Oct 2006, 19:20
Give it time. The keyboard/mouse combo is the most accurate and efficient method of playing an FPS. I can use either, but controllers always feel waaaaay too slow to me.

I'm going to admit something: I don't really like shooters. BioShock and Lost Planet may change my mind, but the learning curve is just too frustrating for me to get into them. Whenver I tried to play a game with my friends, I would always die thirty seconds after spawning and would eventually just get frustrated and stop.

Lots of games are awesome, but when I play most of them, I can not turn to my friends and say, "I WILL PUT YOU IN A HEADLOCK, WITH MY THIGHS," and mean it.

Also, Gex. Because I was a gecko. (but not the 3d ones. Seriously who was it that came up with it being okay to go directions other than right and left and sometimes up or down? It is stupid. If I wanted to go differnt directions, I would go outside.)

Post by: Questionable Alex on 10 Oct 2006, 13:43
Seems I'll be the first one to mention this game, but...

Neverwinter Nights. A game hasn't taken so many hours of my life and never given it up. No game has been so close in ruining my personal life ("so close" means that it did... kinda)

The single player was great enough, catchy story, twists, turns, but nothing groundbreaking I'll admit. But when I got online a whole new world opened to me. The possibilities. The servers. Alright, it's probably nothing unique compared to other MMORPGs and roleplaying games in general, but I loved it. Truly loved it. And with NWN2 soon knocking on my door, or a man carrying it, I can't help but getting all nostalgic.

Aye, that's certainly a favorite game. Final Fantasy X is really worth mentioning too though, just to make it clear to everyone that I wasn't gaming much at FFs prime time at the sixth and seventh game, but hey! FFX sure blew me quite far away. Auron rocks. You know it.

Guys monkey island 2 was the best monkey island. Although 1 was close behind.

Also hitman: codename 47. The original hitman game and in my opinion the best, none of this silent assasin bollocks just sneak kill repeat.

Also alex, could you remove the image from your signature please? You'll notice no-one else around here has one because it's in the rules. It's in the rules because no-one wants to see the same picture in every post you make and it clutters up the forum, having extra pictures also means a longer load time for threads and some wasted bandwidth. Thanks.

Oh god, I have a list and I find it very difficult to name any one.

Final Fantasy VI - Still has what i consider to be the best story ever concieved for a RPG, and my favorite cast of characters ever. Plus it had fucking Kefka. How can you not love the villian that truly started the trend of Villians who actually accomplished taking over the world. Also the last of the series i thought was truly great.

Final Fantasy IV - I didn't think the story was anywhere near as good as VI, but something about this game kept me coming back for more, and i went through this game at least 8 times before i finally lost the console during a move a few years ago.

Lufia 2 - Great story, i loved the elemental Pets you got, and no other video game ending has had the emotional affect on me that this game's ending had. It was an absolutely beautiful game. Even if it was ass rapingly hard.

Half-Life - I still think this is the greatest FPS ever made.

System Shock 2 - I think this is easily one of the best FPS games ever made. Scary as hell and a great innovative title.

Fallout 2 - How can i not love a game where I can plant an active bomb on the little rat bastard homeless child that stole my shit.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Probably the most visually appealing game I've ever played, and the first Zelda game that made sword combat truly FUN. Probably my favorite of the series, and definitely one of my favorite games ofa ll time.

Of those, FFVI would probably be the closest i could come to No. 1

I like slower and more tactical games than most so I tend to shy away from mainstream games a bit.

Everyone will probably scoff but the game I spent the most time on ever would probably be Master of Orion 3. Admittedly the release version is buggy as hell but it has a base of fairly hardcore fans who have released a bunch of unofficial patches and mods which make it simply brilliant. Its really the scale that gets to me. No other game lets me fight battles with upwards of ten thousand ships on each side.
Also its fiendishly complex and takes forever to play which I also love.

Second place would be the original Halo. Simple brilliance. I play most FPS's once through to get the story and then drop them except for a bit of MP. In Halo I easily spent hundreds of hours replaying everything and the co-op mode just makes it heaps of fun and the possibilities for mischeif are endless. I got freakishly good at this game.

NEXUS:The jupiter incident is also very good and quite underated. It takes more thinking and is much more tactical than most games of its type so appealed to the mass market less.

Of course the original homeworld is still pretty much untouchable.
Both the KOTOR's and NWN were amazing.

Ooh freelancer (theres some amazing mods as well) and good ol privateer.

Sadly my comp sucks too much ass to play any of the new FPS's and im too poor to buy a new one.

To the guy who asked for the love to be shown to Secret of Mana, that would be my job. ONLY game I could give serious consideration to as my personal favorite. My god. It hasn't stood the test of time perfectly (few old games have), but with slick, subtle characte (hee hee, rabites!)r/plot design, perfectly executed battle controls (radial menus, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...), and the ability to power up your weapons and magic by searching high and low for the right mana orbs (or using your magic enough), SOM was the best part of my childhood. Despite the lack of replay value, I played that game at least a dozen times, getting all of my characters to level 99 every time (at least 750-1000 hours, all told). That's not to say I've not thought a lot of other games were really fantastic (btw, 6 is my favorite FF, in case anyone wanted to know), but Mana (and it's sequels/spiritual successors) enthralled me in a way no other games really have.
Other really fantastic games, in no particular order:
-System Shock 2 (I considered it for best ever, but couldn't quite give it the win)
-Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (awesome D&D-type RPG- I thought it was a lot better than games like Baldur's Gate; probably on par with Fallout, another seriously awesome game worthy of mention)
-Earthbound (what really needs to be said? When you've killed a New Age Hippy with a baseball bat, you know you've found something special...)
-Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! (probably my favorite import game ever; close on its' heels would be Vib-Ribbon, a PS music-y game, and Ikaruga, which WAS subsequently ported to GC for Americans, so it only half-counts.)
-Guitar Hero (my favorite rythm game, which will become invincible against the forces of criticism once additional tracks can be downloaded)
-Elder Scrolls II(Daggerfall)/IV(Oblivion)- IMO, these represent what every D&D player imagines when creating playing a pen and paper campaign. On that note, I'm looking forwards to Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and should bring up Neverwinter Nights, which accomplishes the same atmosphere.
-Tetris Attack- my favorite puzzle game, right up there with the original Tetris
-Mario Kart 64, my favorite racing game (though Burnout Revenge comes pretty close...)

Y'know, at this point I realize there's really no point in elaborating further... a lot of my favorites have already been mentioned, and in any case there are so many fantastic games that I'd be up all night. I really enjoy most all well made, fun games- don't we all?

Long story short, though-
SECRET OF MANA FTW!

The reason MOO3 got such bad reveiws was in part because beople were expecting Master of orion 2.5 and instead got a completely different game. It NEEDS the fan based patches and mods, I cannot stress that enough. It might be a good idea to pop over to the forums and ask around a bit as well. http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=224

The learning curve is pretty shocking at times. One more thing dont get the download version. It cannot be patched for some reason.

Oh and I wouldnt bother with GalCiv 2. Its gets boring as heck after just a couple of games. Also the AI is way overhyped.

I should be getting the original System Shock in the mail some time soon, and the second hopefully not long after. I'm not a big shooter person, but I really want to check them out.

Neverwinter Nights sucked me in for quite a while. I got kind of burned out, but I left a few things unresolved on some servers I visited, so I plan on returning eventually.

Also, I can't really say it's my favorite game ever, but ICO was an amazing experience and really nothing like any other game I've played. It's a shame about Shadow of the Colossus, because I found it pretty disappointing. It was fascinating a lot of the time, there were some real sparks of genius, and had some of ICO's feel (and the last Colossus was brilliant), but that wasn't what was going on most of the time. On the whole it got pretty tedious for me. Still, I'll be eagerly awaiting their next game.

I can't narrow it down to one, but my all-time favorites that I still can't stop picking up the controllers for are RE4, Jet Grind Radio and Smash Bros Melee(Woo, Samus! Still have a Metroid Prime stand on my wall from when I worked at E/B).

Sadly, I hated Jet Set Radio Future's slightly-skewed controls, big dissapointment. Powerstone 1&2/Worms Armageddon might also be close contenders, because I'm a rope-ninja.

Can't forget World Of Warcraft either since Blizz still has my soul locked in a cold basment somewhere at their HQ.

Civilization 2 and 3 for the sheer epic feeling of the games.  Nothing is better than crushing your enemy in your iron fist.  MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Mario Kart 64

Ocarina of time.  I never got to beat this one because it got stolen when I was about 3/4s of the way through.

The Monkey Island games but I prefer 3 to any of the others, particularly the mini game in the middle when you have to go battle pirate ships and relearn insult swordfighting.

Civilization 2 and 3 for the sheer epic feeling of the games.? Nothing is better than crushing your enemy in your iron fist.? MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

You should play Alpha Centauri. Its like civilisation, but better. In some ways at least. It came after civ 2 but before civ 3, so it doesn't have culture, but it is awesome in many other ways, such as the uniqueness of each of the sides, the way you can design your own units and the 3D terrain. And the Terraforming. Any game where you can decimate the enemies empire by cutting off their food by building a huge-ass mountain next to them is preety damn pimp, IMHO.

Yeah, so play Alpha Centuari. These days it should be really cheap (I think it was released in 1999), so go pick it up. Amazing game.

I'm replaying Alpha Centauri right now. It's better than I remember it, since I was pretty young when it was first released, it didn't interest me.
Now I find it great. I own almost all of Planet, so I decided to declare war on the Alien factions, and have been giving the cities I capture to my human friends who I felt needed help.

as far as rhythm games go, I'd like to have a tie between Guitar Hero and DDR in general, but DDR has released so many sequels without losing any of its majesty, so I'll have to give it the edge.  Still, Guitar Hero is pretty solid.

See also:
-Ratchet and Clank, any of them
-MGS2 (haven't played any of the others... sorry! --*)
 -Halo, both
-Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time and Link's Awakening (GBC)
 -The Sims, any
 -Kingdom Hearts, both
-Madden: picking a year is pointless, they supposedly get better every year
 -NBA Street 2
 -Simpsons Road Rage/Hit and Run
 -Hot Shots Golf 3
-KotOR: either really, but #1 was definitely better
 -Burnout: 3 or Revenge
 -Spider-Man 2
-Star Wars: Republic Commando/Rogue Squadron/SNES game
 -Smash Bros., either
-Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

as far as TEH BEST EVAR goes, I'm gonna have to give Halo the slight edge.  Tons of replay value, and htte multiplayer (the real reason people get the game anyway) is incredible.  However, if either KH or KotOR (or both) had multiplayer, they'd definitely edge out Halo.  A co-op mode would be really nice, but especially if they had a Deathmatch-type dealie, or like a bonus shorter story or something for 2-4 player compatibility.

Homeworld.

Easy one. Homeworld 2 comes close, as do several Lucas Arts adventures. But Homeworld is unsurpassed in terms of awesomeness, if only because of that feeling of vastness and the huge armies you could create.
Hell, I even worked on a mod for this game (Sacrifice of Angels, the Star Trek mod for Homeworld, if anybody knows it).

Unreal Tournament 2004. You can hate it for having no story, plot, or characters. But it remains the purest form of multiplayer out there.

Other games want you to buy your weapons, or wade through menus, but in UT2004, you take 5 paces and there's a gunrack full of kickass weaponry RIGHT THERE. (That's also why i hate counter-strike.)

While I agree with the sentiment here, I must respectfully disagree: Quake 3 instagib is quite possibly the most pure, intense, and powerful gaming experience I have ever had.  UT, particullarly UT instagib doesn't feel right to me, though that probably just personal opinion.  Still: Quake 3. Awesome.

Psychonauts. Tell me, does your game allow the player to whack common birds (which are just hangin' around) into the stratosphere with a big ol' psychic hand? After which the character, "Raz" will say something along the lines of "Oops. See ya in hell!"
I was utterly sold by the time I was traversing the sub-conscious of a gigantic mutant monster lungfish (a beast rivaled only by a one horned one eyed flying purple people eater.) Curiously, the inhabitants of that mind were all tiny fish people enacting Japanese translated Godzilla satire. Raz manifested himself as a lumbering giant capable of smashing/climbing buildings as miniature tanks and whatnot try to bring him down. The fish people dubbed him "Goggalor," because he wore goggles. WHERE CAN YOU GET THAT in another game!? That was just one level! The boss battle was even done Ultra Man style.
Of course, the linear hilarity is nothing compared to the "out of the way" stuff you can find if you look for it. Saying "Delicious Taffy" will, to this day, cause me to swoon whilst clutching my side.

The booby prize goes to Steambot Chronicles, for allowing me to choose the dialogue options: "Crush his dreams" and to a lesser extent "Salt that puppy!"

Kingdom Hearts (I and II, which I am ALMOST done with, I am at the last door...)
Qudditch World Cup (it's the only game that I'm good at, which is sad, yes...),
Okami (which I have had for over a month, and am over half way through and do not think I shall ever reach the end...I got to what I had hoped was the end...and it wasn't...so i was sad)

Grawsith-

I tried downloading a UT2004 demo, and after having to download it a second time to get it to work, I found that I couldn't see shit on the games against a CPU opponent.  Then, I'd always be (AT THE VERY MOST) about a minute in and it would freeze, then quit the program by itself.  So, I'm just gonna wait and get the CD.  Hopefully things will be better with that.

how many people here had a commodore 64?

i remember playing a game where you were a gnome on a quest through a mansion.  i had the original ninja turtles game for the commodore, the original mathblaster, and this one where you're a pidgeon and the entire game was to shit on cars and make them explode.

but if we're talking PC's the first game, and still one of my top 10 would definitely be The Secret Of Monkey Island.

Well, first game I ever played was Star Wars: Rebel Assualt. One of the proudest moments of my life was reaching the end credits of that game when I was like 4 years old.

It's way too hard to really pick an all time favourite game, but I'd have to say either KoToR (either of them, I really love those games) or Grim Fandango, which I've finished twice and can't wait to play through again. A close runner up is City of Heroes, it was the first MMO I played and it sucked up wayyy too much of my time.

Some of my Favourite Games would have to be:

-Quake 3 (4 is good, but online play isnt as good as q3 thats just what I think)

-Unreal tournament 2004

-Starcraft

-Warcraft II (am I the only person who loved that game? I never got to finish it because my old monitor was to dark so you couldn't see those dam oil patches in the water it all looked the same colour!)

-The Curse of Monkey Island

-Runescape (I know im gonna get a ton of abuse over that, but I just find it a good way to pass the time)

-Hidden & Dangerous II Kicked serious ass! Just remembering it, it was pure class

-Command & Conquer series, it's all good.

-Now Half-Life 2, I installed it recently but whats with the long loading times, and that whole steam thing seems pointless to me.

-Commando's 3. It was a good game I spent many an hour on it.

-Grand Theft Auto (the original all others except 3 I found terrible)

-The Sims not a bad series at all.

-Max Payne, classic game as well.

I have a strange relationship with this game. I've never finished it, not once. But i love it's music. Really, it owns.

The same thing happens with a lot of japanese rpgs. Some i haven't even played. But they would be worth having on soundtracks alone.

Also, Smash Bros for Nintendo 64 is legend. I remember me and my brother used to play against each other and we were both so good it would sometimes take hours for us to kill each other. He was a sore loser, so he would press that annoying botton sequence that quits the match whenever he was about to lose. Once, i felt i had enough of it, so i disconnected his controller before he could do it. Got me a black eye and lot of pride.

Since there's no way I'll ever be able to pick one favoritest-geegolly-I-love-this-game game, I'm just going to list games that have kept my soul firmly in their pocket like so much change and a stick of gum for long periods of time.

It probably all started KOEI's original Romance of the Three Kingdoms title for 8-Bit NES.? Back in 1990, my brother and I used to drive our parents freaking bananas at the dinner table, talking about Cao Cao, Sun Ce, Lu Bu, Xiahou Yuan/Dun, Ma Teng, and all these other two-thousand-years-dead Chinese warlords.? They probably thought their nine-year-old was possessed.

After that, I'd have to say Shining Force and Shining Force 2 for Sega Genesis.? Holy crap.

Dragon Force for the Sega Saturn -- that game will always remind me of Megadeth's "Cryptic Writings" and Bruce Dickinson's "Accident of Birth."? Twisted Metal 2 for PS1 was a *great* party game, as was Virtua Fighter 2 for Saturn.? We used to have tournaments all through the winter of 8th grade, with about 20 people in one basement, every Friday night.

Final Fantasy VII on PC, as meh as it is now in retrospect, made me stay inside a lot during the summer of '98.

Shame on me for saying so, but The Sims would make entire days pass by without me noticing, back in '00.

And the most recent additions would have to be Star Wars -- Knights of the Old Republic on PC.? I played that way too many times.? I'm still feeling the ticks and jitters from just having cancelled my World of Warcraft account last week.? That was two years of my life down the drain, but it also got me a trip to Vegas, which was fun.? Now I find myself happily enjoying Oblivion on the PC, and other games on the PS2 I got last Christmas... God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Guitar Hero I and II, Star Wars Battlefront, etc.

All in all, much of my life has been wasted on gaming.? Join the club, eh?

Week by week, Final Fantasy XII is edging into this spot. The game is just fantastic ? most FF games devolve at some point into a race to finish off the story line for me, but I keep finding myself wandering off to do side quests and kill hunt marks instead of sticking to the main quest. Not to mention I hardly ever hit the 55-hour mark in a game these days ? and I'd estimate there's at least 10 or 15 hours of game left in the main storyline, and that's without any sidequests or whatever.

The original Tetris.  Nothing else I've ever played has come even close to the pure addictiveness of it, and the music is absolutely perfect.  It's a pity that every title released since has been crap- Worlds had a saving grace in that the backgrounds and the announcer's voice alone made the game worth playing, but the music was horrid.

Also, Final Fantasy IX and V.  Two of the greatest RPGs of all time.

in my heyday my favorite game was Legend of Zelda: A link to the past
I had a big 2D fighting game phase. I still love to play them. There's no reason to not know all the street fighter turbo and alpha characters. Also street fighter 3 characters. Dark Stalkers and King of Fighters rock also.

my favorite games today are 2 player arcade style games:
exampe: Buster Brothers Collection (PS1)

I am still looking for an epic game like oblivion but with different dynamics.
Someone mentioned Quest For Glory 4. I like how you can train your chracter to be stronger by killing things, rope climbing at the gym, etc.  Yet it was still an adventure game like the 'amazing gastronomical and cultural phenomenon' that is Sam and Max.
