Title: Tell me some good techno while rolling.
Post by: alic3sw0nd3rland on 09 Oct 2006, 09:22
I don't know the forums policy on drugs, but technically I am just talking about music that sounds good on a drug. So anybody know any good stuff?

My entire playlist.

Sasha, Bonobo, Meat Beat Manifesto, Chemical Brothers, Coldcut, Hexstatic, ApheX Twin, Amon Tobin, Cirrus, Underworld, Juno Reactor, Squarepusher, Mr. Scruff, or if you dare, Autechre.

Just throwing those out there.

You could listen to some really underground shit. Bands like Fedde Le Grande, Vandalism, Mylo, TV Rock...

If you take drugs and listen to that kinda hardcore dance music, you'll be ever so cool.

Guys some people are getting it right. There is really certain electronic that is made for E. That is DnB, Big Beat, and straight up dance/house stuff. Psy-trance like Infected Mushrooms is just too damn weird and isn't really party music anyways. Autechre and Squarepusher and IDM stuff like that would probably just completely fuck someone on E up real bad.

Chemical Brothers and Underworld and Crystal Method are the right sorts of things. For the more dancey/house side, try Isolee, Matmos (the farther from the weird shit, the better), and The Soft Pink Truth (<--- choice.)

I heartily second tommy's suggestion of Spacemen 3.
As an aside, i'll have to say that the music i listen to sober is pretty much the same one as the one i listen to while on drugs. Take my advice though: The Avalanches + LSD = not a good idea.

Drug music for me is ...

Dead Meadow
OM
The Beatles
Black Sabbath
Kyuss
Love
13th Floor Elevators
35007
Acid Mothers Temple
Spacemen 3
The Flaming Lips
Bardo Pond
Deep Purple
Colour Haze
Hypnos 69

Much more pure-hallucinogen/weed music than rolling music, but I guess this is the thread for it anyway by now.  I expect 1200 Micrograms would be good ... I've never listened to them, but their entire intention is to be good with drugs so you might want to at least try 'em.

QFT.

Although I was being an ass earlier, I'll be semi-serious now. Good house music (as opposed to that shitty forgettable stuff that gets played on Ministry of Sound radio shows) is great fun when  you're off chops, but trance is where it's at. Trance music and MDMA are an absolutely perfect combination - in particular, good quality melodic trance (think something like early Thrillseekers, or more recently, Above and Beyond, Gabriel and Dresden, and Markus Schulz) is unreal when you're on pills.

Breaks, techno (in all it's many and varied forms), and DnB are also great, but you probably want pingers that have a little bit of speed in them as well. The feeling you get when an absolutely vicious bass rhythm is dropped right while you're peaking is hard to describe.

I personally don't think that amphetamines are the way to go for more "traditional" live gigs. For hip-hop, all you need is a good spliff and a couple of beers.

Coldcut
I saw these guys play live at a festival the other day. Absolutely incredible. Best electronic performance I've ever seen, by a country mile.

oh man, it depends on what you are on.  I'm going to assume e or speed I guess & give some general dance recommendations accordingly.

older Chemical Brothers like Surrender, Dig your own hole and their live mix album Brothers gonna work it out are all pretty good.  my first experience with chemicals was at a Chemicals show, just after Surrender.  it was goddamned awesome.

the first two Daft Punk albums are excellent, as is most of Felix da Housecat's mix albums.  Carl Cox's live set at the Big Day Out a couple of years back was pretty goddamned good, also.  Soulwax's recent album (can't remember the title) and Tiga's album Sexor are pretty good, but even better if you can get some of the remixes people have done.  If you like mashup stuff then Soulwax/2manydjs's live sets are very very good, as are ones by the Avalanches and the Bang Gang.

also, if you are into commercial dance mixes I guess you could do worse than checking out the Ministry of Sound range, especially the Breaks albums put out by Kid Kenobi.  I am also presently listening to a compilation put out by a mob called "Vicious" that is called "Clubwork vol 2"  It seems good enough!

as for individual songs, I would recommend:

- Royksopp, 49 Percent (Angello & Ingrosso Remix)
- Freeform Five, No more conversations (Mylo remix)
- Sharon Phillips, Want2/Need2 (Trentmoeller remix)
- The Knife, Silent Shout (Williams Acidic Circuits mix) & We share our mother's health (Trentmoeller remix)
- Annie, Chewing Gum (Mylo remix)
- Tonite Only, Danger (The bomb)
- Moguai, Freak & Get On   <- (2 songs)

dance music is sometimes hard to recommend for, because a lot of artists will release an entire album's worth of stuff, most of it sounding "ok", but then someone will remix a song off it and it'll blow your head off.  Then some asshole will grab a whole bunch of the really big tunes and compile them into one album, but absolutely fucking murder the mixes.  It's very hit and miss sometimes.

Generally if you look for remixes by Trentmoeller, Mylo, Soulwax, Timo Maas, Dirty South or um, what's his face, Arman van Helden they will be pretty ok!

I'm totally undecided on Dirty South. On the one hand, they are hideously commercial, derivative, uninspired, etc...

But holy shit. Their stuff goes nuts when it's dropped in a club.
Title: Re: Tell me some good techno while rolling.

Yeah, after reading your addition before mine I've been sitting here trying to think of something extra to post.  I mean, I know that the MoS stuff is mostly commercial shit, but sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for, especially in a club, because everyone knows it and is into it and the place explodes, and when you listen to it afterwards you remember how much fun you were having, etc.

That's kind of what I was trying to get at when I said what I did about the compilation albums.  For the most part the mixes are fucking terrible, and I know that John Course in particular seems to mix songs from artists he likes(/promotes?) up in a really "windowshopper" fashion, maybe in an effort to get you to buy the full version?  I get kind of cynical about some of the mixes, I guess.  On the other hand though, I have heard some really good songs on these albums that I may not have encountered otherwise, so I'm torn.

oh, also: Straight Ahead by Tube & Berger is something that you pretty much can't not love on pills.

For sure. The thing about dance music is that there is so much of it, and unfortunately, a lot of it is totally forgettable. Any twelve-year-old fuckwit can lay down a 4/4 beat and put some bleepy keyboard run over the top of it (I have been this kid).

I basically take the option of just downloading as much as I can find and sifting out the good stuff. Because I DJ, it's always good to have a wide library to fall back on. Another point is that you can usually tell the style of music by the artist name, once you've run into them once or twice. Many artists actually use a bunch of pseudonyms so as to differentiate (Ferry Corsten is the obvious one - he released music as Gouryella, System F, Moonman, Veracocha, and many many more, and for the most part, they sound stylistically quite separate).

You live in Sydney, so you do have a better option than I do. Buy a turntable, and go and cruise the vinyl shops. You will always, always find something new and interesting that way.

I don't do pills or hard drugs for a variety of reasons, one being a complete distrust in their purity, the others being more pagan and flowery. Also, most of my musical choices in techno are completely innapropriate for people on e especially, because it's generally too dark. However, if you want, check out Curse of the Golden Vampire, Berzerker (not THE Berzerker, Berzerker is the hardcore/speedcore stuff their vocalist did before starting the band properly), Disciples of Annihilation and Terrorfakt. They should have the speed.

There's a whole section of ravers apparantly called gravers (basically a gothic raver) that listen to like darker techno.

Curse Of The Golden Vampire was so fucking incredible on shrooms. My mind peeled 'Substance X' into all these different peices and they were playing at different speeds. It was fucking amazing. Khar, if you listen to CotGV under der influence, I would really really reccommend Dalek's "Absense" for similar circumstances.

If you were gonna go for a KMFDM album, I'd recommend Angst or maybe Xtort before (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/KMFDM-Symbols-true-title-24.png).

What? Isn't this just mainstream house? I do like Mylo though - "Destroy Rock and Roll" is actually a good CD to study to.

I don't take drugs but I listen to trance - A lot of Australian DJs are awesome... Steve Hill, Nervous, and Bexta are my favourites.

While I think Angst is the better album, Symbols is more dance-cluby.  Once the opening bass line from Megalomanic starts running up and down your spine it is game on.

*edit* all this talk got me listening to Symbols, I completely forgot about Torture.  I think this song may melt your brain if listened to while rolling.

Bexta

... Oh please. She's not quite Lisa "Show My Boobs Because I Just Fucked Up A Drop And The Crowd's Not Happy" Lashes, but she's not far off.

My experience with Australian female trance DJs hasn't been good, actually. I'd like to meet/listen to a good one, but I haven't really had the chance.

But yes, I was being sarcastic. I think that drugs and electronic music go together like peaches n cream, but since I'm something of an electronica purist/snob, I tend to get indignant when some gumby 15-year old candy raver starts asking about music as a supplement to their night on pills. :)

You believing of course, as all good music afficionados should, that it should be more that pills should be an accompaniement to your night on music?

Bingo. Drugs can enhance group music experiences such as concerts, clubs and festivals, but only in the same sense that candles, saxophones and chocolate body paint can enhance lovemaking. The thing in question is already transcendental - you're merely fine-tuning the experience.

The Knife is an excellent group with techno influences, though they define themselves as "Emotional Electronic Pop".

You could also check out Mindless Self Indulgence, a popular band with influences of techno, pop, punk rock and hip-hop. Also, Skinny Puppy and Ohgr are classic industrial artists.
