Title: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: jeph on 13 Nov 2006, 04:52
This is the thread for plugging YOUR comic.

Please don't post images or anything, just links please.

Hint: If you say that your comic sucks, I'm not gonna look at it.

i'd plug my comic if my website hadn't had internet-sulphur rained down upon it when my hosts didn't renew the domain and it got squatted.

I had no idea you'd been doing that comic for over a year now.  :O  I promise I'll get around to actually reading it here eventually.  I'm kind of one of those people who can't just sit down and read something starting in the middle of it, so getting into a new webcomic is kind of a big ordeal for me.

(That means that yes, I have read the entire archives of Penny-Arcade, Perry Bible Fellowship, Dr. McNinja, QC here, Order of the Stick, and White Ninja.  I would attempt that for Jerkcity but there's kind of not a point seeing as it's entirely random anyway and half the fun is clicking the random button and not having any idea what you're going to get.)

comics by and for people who have no respect for doctors.

a fledgling little birdlet of a comic, we're about 20 strips in, but each one is a labor of love (hand drawn with a brush, laboriously scanned and cleaned up, etc.)

i appreciate that narr, we've actually been doing it for just over two and a half years now and still enjoy a relatively obscure status  :-D

and tom, your comic looks well drawn and it's funny, i just wish there were a back and first button on the home page

One-liners (http://www.one-liners.net/)

If you are looking for another comic to add to your trawl list, and you enjoy things like American Pie and Maxim magazine, then check out One-liners (http://www.one-liners.net/), which was created by, and is written by myself, and illustrated by -U! (http://www.garabatorama.com)

One-liners (http://www.one-liners.net/) is a selectively episodic, mostly autobiographical comic about myself, the superlative asshole. Which is a fancy way of saying the strip is comprised of stories from my life, and those I have heard from my friends. It is rife with sexual and dark humour, and again, will make a worthy addition to the trawl lists of those who appreciate the aforementioned types of humour.

But don't take my word for it, let the strips (http://www.one-liners.net/index.php?p=8) speak (http://www.one-liners.net/index.php?p=1) for (http://www.one-liners.net/index.php?p=4) themselves (http://www.one-liners.net/index.php?p=12).

Still not convinced? Then read this review (http://www.fleen.com/archives/2006/10/02/two-liners-are-twice-as-much-work/) and consider the fact that it made it to the finals (http://www.fleen.com/archives/2006/11/14/706/) of the Webcomic Idol (http://www.bombsheltercomics.com/vote.php) competition.

One Liners is pretty sweet.? I dig whoever that is in the Black.

That is myself, actually.  One-liners is autobiographical, but I value my anonymity, so I asked the artist to draw me that way.  So thank you for the compliment.

If you want to see more of -U!'s artwork, visit his website - http://www.garabatorama.com the sketchblog is especially cool.

He also illustrates Big Iron, which is a decent Western comic on Pixel Strips (http://www.pixelstrips.com).

oh man, you do read this page, lucky me! can't thank you enough.

I also went through and checked all the previous buttons, which seem to work (at least for me.) If you're referring to the way that it ends on #8 and not on #1, it's on purpose, although i will eventually have to figure out a better way to organize or integrate the first seven strips (the quality of the art in strips 1-7 is awful, so i separated them from the rest of the archive.)

also, what is the proper etiquette to relieve the inner tension that builds when jeph jacques says he's going to link your comic, and doesn't? (presumably because of a million t-shirt orders to fill or other general comic-stress---or possibly that he did and i just can't find the link, or possibly because his intention is to fuck with me.)

also pretend that that paragraph was phrased in a way that doesn't sound like an obnoxious whining/begging/complaining child who insists that his parents buy him all 3 new video game systems for christmas.

Tom:  I haven't seen a link to Lucid TV yet, I'm sure Jeph is just really busy and forgot to link to it.  I don't know him at all, but I doubt he's the kind of person that would say he'll link to a comic just to fuck with someone.  And even if he was, I don't think he would do it to you, because Lucid TV is fucking awesome.  I'm sure he'll link it eventually.  And I'm also sure that nagging him to do so won't help you.

Kadlin:  Thanks.  I don't like the idea of marriage, but I'm always up for a non-commital Sven-esque romp with a beautiful lady.

oh, and i read one-liners, the lucid tv and stuperheros...and i think they are impressive! i just get all disappointed and sulky when i find out that the archives aren't as big as qc or the like.

my boyfriend hates when i start reading a new strip because i always have to read ALL of it...maybe several times if im bored enough. plus, i never pay any attention to him until i finish. :D i am seriously a nerd...and devoid of social skills.

I so far have only read One-liners, which is awesome. I'll get around to the rest once I'm done with classes, for the meanwhile though I do have some I would like to whore out:

There's my quirky project, Souvenirs from a Penguin Gift shop (http://giftshop.penguindeskjob.com). I can't guarantee it's funny, I can't guarantee it makes sense; I can guarantee it doesn't suck.

Other than that, I do want to pander out the ultimate of projects, the WikiWebcomic - the Webcomic! (http://wikiwebcomic.penguindeskjob.com/index.php/WikiWebcomic) applies the basic principle of wiki to webcomics. More or less, scripts can be written, edited out, comics can then be drawn out. It's an open-ended collaborative project.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

As for webdesign, basic HTML is very easy to learn and it will serve.  Search for sites like Webmonkey.  Or check this out:

http://forums.comicgenesis.com/viewtopic.php?t=78021

You'll also need a good webcomic management script.  I recommend SomeryC, a tutorial for which can be found in the Special Features section on my site.

Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: kiltedassassin on 12 Dec 2006, 00:45
Hrm....I've had a few people tell me that my site doesn't work. It's a DNS issue which means... I dunno something. If you have tried to visit www.kiltedassassin.com and it hasn't worked, and for some reason you have lots of time on your hands (or are desperate to see the Science Squad) you can follow the following easy steps:
( I don't really expect anyone to do this but still, it's worth a shot).

For Macs, Linux/UNIX, Windows XP:  from the command prompt or terminal
window, (see ** Note ** below) try:

nslookup kiltedassassin.com

If you don't get an answer back, try:
nslookup kiltedassassin.com 205.171.2.65

That should return an answer from QWest (resolver.qwest.net), who
currently recognizes kiltedassassin.com.  If you can't get an answer from
that IP address, then your ISP has more DNS configuration to do, since
QWEST is a huge DNS provider.

Then try to ping the IP address for kiltedassassin.com:

ping 67.41.131.73

Copy the results from nslookup into an email to your ISP's help desk, and
tell them that this is a working domain, and please give you access.  If
you get something back from ping, add to the email that you can see the
server on the network.

** Note **:  nslookup can be found in different places, so you many need
to try /usr/sbin/nslookup on Solaris, Mac or Linux systems.  On Red Hat
Linux, the command is /usr/bin/nslookup.  From Windows XP, the command is
available on the XP Professional Command Prompt, and likely available on
other versions of Windows or Windows XP.

Quite capital of you to put up this thread Jeph. Lemme put on my Shameless Plugging Hat (TM) here....

...as most of you who read my posts on the Weekly Comic threads may know, I write and do the art for a weekly sci-fi superhero webcomic called The Vanguard (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/macnut). It's basically about a group of classic heroic characters based on a starship defending and exploring galactic civilization in the 24th century. Think Justice League meets Star Trek.

I've been putting up pages since April of this year and it's presently in the middle of the second chapter. You might want to start reading from the beginning of the 1st chapter (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/macnut/vanguard/series.php?view=archive&chapter=10821) as it ties into the 2nd. As to whether it sucks, well, that's really up to the reader to decide, but I like most of the work I've done on it so far. Sure there's room for improvement, but I figure only continuing practice will do that-in other words, I should keep doing the comic for as long as I can come up with decent stories. Unless you downright hate both the superhero and sci-fi genres, I think you'll like what I'm doing.

*takes off Shameless Plugging Hat(TM)* Anyone else wanna borrow this? Just pass it back to me when the thread is closed.

Just getting my comic ideas out there!

http://sloppyjaloppy.deviantart.com/
I think the working title is 'Something about Computers...'
but that is pending atm.

Basically it's a humor strip that deals with a computer
named Jack, his Ipod buddy named Rudy, and a
host of other appliances.

just FYI, I'm not trying to steal similiar ideas of Pintsize
and his machine friends. i've actually been hesitant
to show this forum my new project because of such
paranoia. i tried to deviate them in
several aspects afterwards (so I don't piss off Jacques,
whom I admire.) so that when you're reading my comic
you get something new out of it.

Enjoy!

It tells tales of stuff that I've seen or experienced at work, and my work is creating visual effects for movies, etc.
Comic-strip style, continuing storylines, some color.

Tell me what you think.  There isn't a Wireheads' Review in existence so far.

Cheers!

Sorry about that, I made that macro earlier today and just couldn't resist using it.

Anyways, I'm making my attempt at this sort of thing at www.drunkengamers.net (http://www.drunkengamers.net).  I know the site isn't in very good shape.  I'm been working on an overhaul for it for the better part of the night, and probably will be trying to fix the thing until...oh, probably right up until I can afford to just pay and have a half decent job done for me by someone who knows what they're doing.  The skin is crap, and half of the links don't work, but I'm proud of it none the less.

EDIT:  But ya, some critiques and maybe some encouragement would go a long way towards help my self esteem with that thing.  Neither of my regulars are very encouraging.

Ill plug the godsdamned comic when I get the first on drawn and writted, but first I nee to know what program jeph uses to draw QC, or I need to buy a scanner. The basic idea is I take photos of me in ordinary situations, trace over the "lines" and color them in, adding effects as necessary. Ill post a sketch sometime in the future. Any advice, though?

Hi all,

I've been writing a comic called The Misadventures of February Gray (http://"http://www.februarygray.com) for almost a year now.  I haven't been the most active about promoting it, but I figure posting here is a start.  I'm gonna start advertising more heavily soon, if anyone has advice regarding promotion (or hell, any advice whatsoever really) I'd appreciate it.

Anyway, about the comic, it's a slice of life thing about a girl living in Las Vegas that on occassion isn't the most work-safe thing in the world, but regardless, I hope you enjoy it.  I do.

Hello I just got up to date with all of QC and I got to say wow nice job  :-D.  After reading about how you like to look and try out other people?s web comics I thought that you would like to come visit ours. We have been up and running for almost 2 years now so please any and all of you who like to try new web comics come and visit.
Also like many web comics we had a rocky start but after the first season it real picked up in pace and story line. 8-)

Alicia and her friends live their lives in late '80s Southern California, play in a band, and crazy shenanigans ensue!

humanbear is a story about the adventures of a half-human/part-bear that doesn't want to be sent into space. hopefully it (or one of several other story-based things) will take comic form someday and it may be what happens when lucid tv stops.

(it was also conceived two years before the south park episode with "manbearpig")

so the thing's called Code White (http://codewhitecomic.mjones-online.com) . I know, sounds weird for a name, but once you'll find out what it means and where this term is comonly used, I think you might like it  :-D

You can tell it's cool because it was nominated for a WCCA award (http://www.ccawards.com) and it didn't win (http://ryanestrada.com/wcca07/ceremony/newcomer.htm) which means it's totally rock n' roll (dude).

But don't take my word for it. I might be slightly biased. Check it out  (http://www.outtherecomic.com)for yourself.

Positive feedback is so HOT.  Thanks for your readership.  We're only going to get better.  I'm learning about photography, photoshop and the basic principles of comic design as I go, and as my actors get more comfortable on camera, we should be able to go places.  Also, we'll be exploring more and more of iconic Portland, so that will be fun.  Expect the camera shot to get crisper and awesomer, the filters to get smoother, and the space around the speech bubbles more uniform.

I hope it's OK to plug a collective here.

Intravenous Comics (http://www.ivcomics.net), a collective I helped found, launched this past Thursday.  Member comics are Steve and Mac, Treading Ground, Brink, Institute of Metaphysics, One-liners, and Lucid TV.

The last two have been plugged in this thread, and were well received.

We also have a sample page (http://www.ivcomics.net/samples.html) to help new readers if our comics are worth reading or not.

*shrug* It's not much, but it is a comic, and I guess I should see if anyone is interested. I was drawing it, but I'm SOOOOOO slow at drawing comic style (I'm more of a painter and sculptor), so my niece has just started drawing for me. I have faith she'll improve. Couldn't find another artist (mostly didn't know where to look and didn't wanna spam anyone with it), and didn't wanna give up the idea.

I mostly liked your comic Matt,
though I read some of your news posts and thought you kind of contradicted yourself when you said "They say stupid things, laugh in a stupid way, and generally act like a complete moron. I've heard the phrases that it's so stupid it's funny before. I've never understood it.", yet some of your jokes are based on the stupidity of your characters, so you must understand that o.o

Also, while I'm not a big fan of popular topic-based ridicule humor, I know tons of people are, and what you do with it is really good.

This is the kind of stuff I'd expect to see running in a newspaper.
Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: MattBurns on 16 May 2007, 06:52
Thanks, though keep in mind I don't write all the strips.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if I broke my own rules. Most of the time  I'm not very good at understanding why I like things and why I don't, so when I try to verbalize them, I often find exceptions to my rules Many occasions I find myself enjoying things that I wouldn't think I would.

Case in point. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

I didn't want to see this movie. I don't find Vulgarity and delinquency funny, as a rule. Due to a strange misunderstanding, I went to see this movie with my wife, she thought I wanted to see it, I thought she wanted to see it, though neither of us really did.
I didn't want to like this movie. I spent most of the first half of this movie not liking this movie. Then something caught me off guard. It was the break in scene, all the hot girls were dressed in their skin tight cat bungler outfits. they were all doing various feats of gymnastics in an attempt to bypass the laser security grid, and out do each other. The last girl performs a series of very complex maneuvers and ends up in a dramatic pose, flushed with her own success and hubris.  She then lets out a very long, very loud fart. 12 year old humor at it's best. it was very low brow, very juvenile. I died. To this day it stays with me as one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I really don't remember much else from the movie. there was some more low brow humor. Mark Hamil had a pretty good role, but I enjoyed the rest of the movie, and to this day I have it in the list of movies I like.

So perhaps I should use the word generally a lot more than I do when I'm talking about what I like and don't like. Most of the time I just take my lumps when people point out where I contradict myself and go on.

Either way, thanks for taking the time to read my site, and thanks even more for the feedback. I'm truly surprised and honored that you think its on par with professional syndicated strips. And if you talk to some of the tons of people you know that enjoy this kind of humor, could you send them over?

thanks!

thanks.

Sure, I'll send out the link to some friends today

Your comic very much reminds me of other strips from the Chicago Reader, like Red Meat (which doesn't run anymore, but it was awesome).

You guys should check out Spikedhumor.com

Someone should collect a comic from everyone's comic strips here, and make them into a picture gallery and post it there.

Hey, I liked the artwork a lot.
It's off to a good start, even the whole ditching the plotline thing, which is funny in itself.

A lot of the links don't work, like clicking next or previous, and even one page I couldn't click on "archive", but you said it's under construction so I assume you're working on that.

Again, not a big fan of popular celebrity humor, but I'm probably the minority there :P

My favorite one had to be the one where he's bleeding and says Take me home, Jesus.
I rofl'd.

Also, sushi, I read every one of your napkinz comic, and I just gotta say that was awesome stuff.
I definitely noticed your influences like Don Hertzfeldt, etc. Loved the random humor and movie references.
I'll be checking for more on Sundays :D

Hey, well thanks for the feedback. And also, I feel dirty when I have to write in celebrity humour. Writing is much harder than drawing and i'm afraid no one will understand allusions to death metal, comic books and other obscure things.

Some people will understand them, some won't. Some will be turned off by them. You have to decide whether you're willing to limit your audience to people interested in the same things you are. Or find a way to make the references accessible.

I wouldn't be too scared of that. QC makes indie references no one else gets, and it's still popular :P

I would venture to say that QC is popular in spite of those references, not because of them. QC's popularity rests on a number of things that Jacques does well, like character development, gag contruction, pacing, etc.
Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: TheBoredOne on 13 Jun 2007, 15:24
Yeah exactly.
As long as you're not basing the comic on one type of joke all the time, and still manage to make those references funny, I don't see a problem with it.

The style of the comic is constantly evolving as I get better with wielding Sodipodi and my wacom. :) The first few editions of each comic have been around for over a year and a half now, but now that I'm only working 60 hours a week, I find that I actually have time to work on them! Comic-strip style, continuing storylines, some color.

Tell me what you think.  There isn't a Wireheads' Review in existence so far.

Office Ninjas: Stealth, Assassination, and Consulting (http://www.office-ninjas.net)

A lot of what goes on at an office is rediculous. Any one who has worked in one knows this. This things people say. The bass ackwards way that things get done. All I'm saying is that if the company was staffed by ninjas, at least they'd have an excuse.

I've waited a while before trying to plug my comic, but the time has come. The comic started with the dual purpose of trying to make something entertaining and having something that would keep me drawing regularly. It has succeeded at the latter, but I need feedback from people who aren't friends and family.

So yeah, I appreciate your time and hope you enjoy the comic.

Another "not my comic" and by the way, searching "My Brain Hurts" in this forum yeilds fun results.

Named after Screeching Weasel's album, My Brain Hurts is a minicomic published (roughly) three times a year. I think QCers who enjoyed the early awkward romance and relationship issues will enjoy this comic. Additionally, gender theory and women's studies students'll get a kick out of the themes the author deals with. You can get the comics from either author Liz Baillie's site (http://www.lizbaillie.com/) or from her quasi publisher Microcosm (http://www.microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/artist/liz_baillie/)

So yeah, heavy pen and inking, the search for sexual identity and punk rock in a contemporary NYC setting.

Very noir-nerrative (which I like when well-done) and the art is very, very good.  I'll probably read a-ways into it and post again with more thoughts.

@ Kosh:

Honestly, I think half the people who've plugged their comics in this thread aren't around a whole lot or did it on their first post.  One of the reasons we made the thread was to keep all plugs for people like that in one place, and it's actually kept some of them around.  I've put at least 2 of the comics posted in here on my regular read list and there's a lot more I've read into and now that I think about it, should probably go back into and see what's been updated.  Just a hint: If you're around here more, i think people are more likely to end up reading your comic.  Just an FYI.

Ah, what the hell. I've been resisting plugging my stuff here for a while (I don't know why I'm always so reluctant to talk about my comic on forums -- it's good free publicity), but now I'm bored at work, so here:

Taco Man and Burrito Boy (http://www.tmabb.com) -- It's about two superheroes, but there's a lot more going on than just that. Oh you just wait. It's going to be awesome.

It's extremely continuity-heavy, so if you need a good starting point that isn't the very first comic from six years ago, I recommend the beginning of Chapter 8 (http://www.tmabb.com/index.php?date=061016).

Does Jeph still read this thread, I wonder?

I'm sure this thread was created just to keep shameless plugging out of the rest of the forum. Then, Mr. Jacques just says he'll pop in now and then and roam through the comics that people such as myself have created, to keep us placated. We've basically been condemned to float through the darkness of this void forever! He's a successful webcomic author for a reason- he's crafty.

All kidding aside, I managed to upload a few comics finally. Its hard to do with a modem. www.botscomic.com (http://www.botscomic.com)   I would really appreciate it if anyone could leave any kind of feedback, maybe in the forum where it says "feedback"? Please?

Oh, I actually visited a comic link, which is a rarity. (like I said, a dial up modem) And it was... sidekickgirl? something along those lines. I like! nice work.

Oh, has anyone else noticed Mr.Jacques' fascination with the Quebecois? It's weird.

Thanks guys, I've only recently been unable to update simply because I started a new job, Teaching, middle school. It's been a wild ride and it really is so much hard work. Anyhow thanks for the compliments guys that only fuels my desire to continue. Hopefully this weekend I can update, after all, it's a three day weekend, thank god.

I suggest reading in sequential order. It's not a formal site by any means, but it's about a pigeonheaded and a catheaded boy and girl who are friends with luminaries Hilary Duff, Orlando Bloom and Snorkles the Bear. There are silly music jokes.

Might as well hop on.

There's actually 3 comics right now on my website. One is finished (My Life with Thrill Kill Karl), one is a follow-up to the finished comic (Pater Noster), and the other one is dumb humour (In the Mind of Vlad Damien). A few more comics will follow, as written on the site.

http://vladdamien.comicgenesis.com (http://vladdamien.comicgenesis.com)

Be warned, the comics are mostly serious and contain mature subject matter - for mature readers preferably (I'm not one to censor or restrain people - if you feel you're mature enough, go ahead).

Hope you like the comics!

Hey all,
I have started a comic too, its a sprite comic. Bascally because i simply cannot draw. (phisically unforunately).
Don't know if it belongs here, but i'd like to know if ppl like it, and if i should continue.
I've made 14 comics so far (11 online at moment of writing this), and if i want to make more i have to start a 'real' storyline because it would get boring otherwise.

Anyway, let me know what you think:
http://comic.wtfuck.net/ (click it, but don't actually look at the url. long story.)

Hey all.

I read QC regularly and just set my comic up with its own site (it's been in a newspaper and on drunkduck.com before I decided to get my own site), so I figured I'd make with the shameless plugging.

www.rentathugcomics.com (http://www.rentathugcomics.com)

Rent-A-Thug is a dark comedy about the employees of the Rent-A-Thug Agency, which is functionally a criminal temp agency that hires out goons to do whatever dirty work one might need done.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v159/blazelust/elizabethbanner.png)  (http://www.drunkduck.com/Elizabeth/index.php)

Updates Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday

This is my friend's comic. I know for a fact that her buffer is pretty large, so updates are 100% reliable.

Summary:

Elizabeth
Rated M for violence/some disturbing themes

http://www.drunkduck.com/Elizabeth/

Elizabeth Walsh is your typical all-American girl. Raised Catholic in a single-parent household, she is bright and pretty with a hunger for books and a few grand aspirations for her future.

That is, until her mother and sisters were murdered, and she was stolen from her empty house by their assassin.

Now she finds herself consumed by the Order of the Thorn, the largest crime ring and single surviving assassin's guild in the United States. She tells herself that she will never succumb to the brutal apprentices' training and become an assassin, but the 0% failure rate of the program looks a bit... daunting.

It has been a while, and I'm saddened not to have received any remarks about my webcomic,

http://www.boberfan.com (http://www.boberfan.com).

The comic is about Bober, an impossibly famous tv/movie star, his nerdy friends and their off-beat take on life.

I think it is really funny and very original.  The art isn't spectacular, although it is getting better, and it really doesn't detract from the humor of the comic.
The blog posts are thoroughly enjoyable in their own right, and not to be missed.

There's my opinion.  What do you guys and gals think?

My new site started just today.  It's either a web-novel masquerading as a comic, or a comic that thinks it's a novel, because it's prose text with some key illustrations for each page.  It's got government conspiracies, superheroes, intrigue, spies and insanity.  Plus, it just started, so you can get in on the ground floor.

my other project is http://nomananisland.wordpress.com which is in fact a novel, with some illustrations, and it's been running for two months so there are a lot of chapters up.

Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: nealcomplex on 21 Jan 2008, 23:13
Hello, I am the author of a webcomic called “Suburban Anxiety.”

I am honestly surprised this thread isn't much larger...

I thought it was about time I put my name out there and start trying to see if I could get others other than friends interested in my webcomic. Without being an plug/ad whore on this board.

I started the comic back in 2003 but its been on hiatus after not going very far twice due to some major crapola happening in my personal life. But recently I got back on the horse and we are updating regularly.

The comic, originally intended to be a movie, is kind of a giant homage to the film industry. Ya know how Jephs characters geek out and talk about indie music? You can expect many conversations between the leads about who's acting job was better in what movie or which directors interpretation of Batman has  been the best in this comic. All while a major developing story unfolds itself. The comic was originally written in screenplay format at about ninety some pages. I eventually took each page and have broke it down to ninety some comics.

A note on the artwork: I am aware that the artwork on the first few strips is pretty terrible. I make no excuses for it. It was pretty much a combo of not having the proper technology available I needed to do a web comic correctly and I just couldn't draw as well back then.

At the moment, I don't even draw the comic anymore, a cast member who is also an artist has taken that over. My artwork has improved a bit since, but I honestly, between work and my social life don't have the time to write each comic, draw each comic and then do the photoshop and site maintenance all myself. I like Alex's artwork just fine for now and it makes my life a helluva lot eaiser not doing all the work myself.

The way we do the artwork is it's drawn by hand, inked and then scanned into the computer settup I have at home. From there I color it and touch it up in photoshop as best I can. Alex and I both agree we like drawing on paper better than a wacom tablet (though I am sure we had a wacom tablet at the moment it would make doing backgrounds 10000x easier) because we just think the drawings look more pure. And it saves us from going stir crazy sitting in front of computers all day.

The story is just starting. I really think we have a good story to tell you folks and anyone who would become a loyal reader and learn about us and our characters and our sick sick world we call home is very much appreciated.

Sorry if I pander to much.

Anywho, I hope you all start reading. We currently update Monday and Friday only but we are soon looking to update in the middle of the week as well.

So, I present to you, the web comic readers at the QC forums...

http://www.suburbananxiety.com (http://www.suburbananxiety.com)

Enjoy!

Hi guys, I've been reading QC a while, only fairly recently actually noticed the forums ...
Anyways, on to the plug. My friend and I have been writing Indifferently Evil http://www.indifferentlyevil.com/ (http://www.indifferentlyevil.com/) for several months now - or rather, I do most of the writing, he does all of the drawing (you do not want to see the abominations I laughingly call drawing), and another friend runs the site.
The comic is random, sometimes surreal, and contains material that may offend some viewers.
I hope you enjoy, and we always appreciate any feedback.

I'm trying to start a comic. More just trying to learn and the whole process from creating an idea to laying it out, drawing, painting everything. They're just up on a blog but it's not too shabby. Feedback would be great. Thanks  :-)

I've been doing my comic for, like, over a year now, I think.  I've had enough people say either "I love your comic, it reminds me of Questionable Content!" or "I hate your comic, it reminds me of Questionable Content!" that I decided it was high time I tried to leech me some readers.  That's right, I said leech.  'Cause, let's be honest, I'll probably never post here again.  I'm too busy updating my comic 5 days a week.  (Also slinging out random sketches on the weekends.)  Anyway, let's just get to the link, shall we?  Between Failures (http://betweenfailures.com/)  See?  It also has two words put together to make the title.  If you're a fan of comics with two word titles you're gonna love Between Failures.  It fits your strangely lax criteria.  Anyway, it starts out black & white, then changes to glorious colortone later on.  Sometimes I even get a background slid in there.  I know what you're thinking...  Too good to be true, right?  Myep, probably, but that's neither here nor there.  The fact remains that I desire readers, and I've found a few comics I like in the short time I've been snooping around here, so the system works.  The glorious, candy-coated, system...  Also, I am actually a fan of QC.  It's one of the comics that inspired me to try making my own.  So, even though I'm not here, saying stuff, know that I'm right there every day waiting to see what happens.  (Faye and Sven?  Who didn't see it coming?)  Anyway, that's all for me, later taters.

It's not been going long, but I do hope to keep it going, but as the art style is not too complex (think XKCD but... well, you'll see) the cartoons are quick to make, so I should be able to keep updating without too much stress. The idea is to have self-contained jokes but recurring people that gradually build up a sense of character.

EDIT: If anyone's actually looking at the comic, I apologise for the sporadic updates; the internet on the computer wth the cartoons is dead or dying.

Um.  Backwaterplanet.com.  Started out as Exco for two years, then changed to Backwater Planet at the start of 2006.

It's basically a space opera parody that's very character driven.  And as you go through the strip the art goes from barely presentable to sightly more presentable!

Started off as a run of the mill gaming comic, but in the multiple rewrites has evolved into much much more.  Now if only my partner in crime, the Artist, can start cranking out more strips.

I actually use a similar production technique to Jeph. I was surprised. The only difference is I usually lack shading and thus just do my coloring on the same level with a "darken" brush tool.

Well if there are any fans of manga then you might enjoy my comic:

http://seiki-jutsu.blogspot.com (http://seiki-jutsu.blogspot.com)

You can also read it here (http://seiki-jutsu.smackjeeves.com/comics/373723/chapter-1-fix-me-cover/) if you don't feel like clicking on all the images to make them bigger.

In staying true the Japanese style of drawings I have arranged the panels so they read from RIGHT to LEFT. I hope this doesn't hurt your brain too much. Also I use some Japanese effects, which are all defined here (http://seiki-jutsu.com/definitions.html).

A very basic plot intro is as follows:

In a world where humanity has been forced to live on or around an enormous tree called SEIKI, a recent power struggle between the two ruling factions has resulted in the ban and confiscation of almost all technology. This has made trouble for our two main characters, one a young female genius with just about anything electronic and the other a robot she built. Taking refuge amongst the roots of the tree, they've been living out the last few years of their forced refuge in relative peace and harmony. But of course, not everything is as it seems...

Have a look if it sounds interesting to you, there aren't too many pages yet (20), but I'd love to get some feedback if anyone wants to comment.

Hello everyone!  My comic is called World's Worst Girlfriend and can be found at this link: http://www.klrtech.com/WWG/wwg.htm  it is updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Despite the seemingly misogynistic (called that by a person who I bet didn't read it) title, it's about Jaime (an artist) and her best friend Julia (racecar driver and bar manager) and their relationships.  Mostly its a humor comic, but lately I've been dipping into the adventure/mystery well, too.

*Please note that I've been having server problems lately and the entire site might not show up.  Just try again later.  Thank you!

Zipper Accident (http://"http://www.zipperaccident.com)

Howdy hi QC readers, just figured I'd take the opportunity to post my new webcomic that launched this weekend. Things are still a bit rough html wise, and of course my drawing abilities will be improving with time, but I'd love to get some initial feedback on the comic as a whole.

FAQ:

"Oh great it's another Penny Arcade/CAD/etc knockoff isn't it? A couple cliche 20-somethin year olds living together and talking about video games!"

- I dunno. Is Family Guy a knock off of Simpsons? I suppose there are quite a few similarities between Zipper Accident and a plethora of other comics out there but hey, you write about what you know and things your readers can relate to. I suppose I could've made the comic about two beavers that live on a space station orbiting the planet Googlorflex for the sake of originality, but truth be told I don't know a whole lot about space beavers. The comic will be focusing more on movies and real life issues though I'm sure video games will rear their head as I am quite a fan.

"When do you update?"

- Three times a week. Working on getting about a dozen comics up this week and then next week will begin updating on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

"What is this comic about?"

- Just real life commentary and satire... some jokes and humorous events that we experience and decide to orchestrate into the comic.. also looking at starting a series called "If We Directed It" where we make crucial changes to various films in order to improve the cinematic experience or to just poke fun at the movie.

So do check us out and let me know what you think! If you like us I urge you to bookmark the site! If you are a webcomic owner yourself, shoot me an email if you want to work out some kind of mutual advertisement gig. We will update each week, and try our hardest to entertain and enlighten.

Ok so maybe just entertain.

Zipper Accident (http://html://www.zipperaccident.com)

You will laugh.

You will cry.

You will probably want to get tested.

If anyone knows of a good tutorial for customizing your site with ComicPress, that would be awesome. It works...but doesn't look like I want it to.

Alright, so this isn't actually my comic, but it's a friend's. He refuses to plug it anywhere, so I am forced to do so because it's just too good be unknown.

About:
It's a comic rendered in Blender (IE, it's totally in 3D), and it's about a group of robots in a landscape that likes to spontaneously re-invent itself. I can't tell if there's going to be a real story to it yet (because he doesn't tell me much about future comics and it's just in the beginning stages), but as of now, it's just really funny and the art is pretty amazing. It's updated once a week on Saturday, and he's really good about being on time.

Anyway, without further ado... here's the link to ustherobots.com (http://ustherobots.com)

Yaaaaay plugs.

I started a webcomic a couple of months ago.  I'm a writing student at university and attempting to be a journalist/children's author, if I can manage it.  The reason I switched into visual medium was that a friend asked me to start writing a script so he'd have a regular project to work on, art-wise.  His drawing can be a little awkward in some panels and then absolutely perfect in other panels, but for all I know, so can my writing.

It's about two university girls who both get employed for the split personalities of a Private Eye/Criminal Mastermind and attempt to persuade him to tilt permanently towards either good or evil.  Not really a punchline-type comic, but if you don't find it generally humourous then I'm doing something wrong.  Also hints of drama and absurdism.

Jeph said something about the internet being incredibly democratic in the way it filters out crap from the good stuff, so I don't feel bad by plugging my own photo-comic here - if it's any good, then it'll get a little respect, and if it's bad, then it will quickly be ignored, so hey, here goes:

Surviving the World

A photocomic (because I can't draw).  Providing lessons on science, literature, love, and life, a wide range of topics but a consistent laugh.

Think the Far Side if Gary Larson only had a chalkboard and no ability to draw.

http://survivingtheworld.net

I'm pretty sure it's enjoyable (at least the people I've shown it to so far have felt so), so let me know what you think.  Thanks all.

Ultimate Nerds (http://www.ultimate-nerds.com)

I write the webcomic and my friend draws it.  It alternates between one-off joke strips and stories.  The stories sometimes focus on the main characters of the comic, but sometimes they go off onto different stories that involve fantasy and super-powers.

It usually updates 3 times a week, on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule.

I've been doing the comic for about a year now and have over 100 comics.

Ravilob is the name of a town in which the locals question, make fun of, and sometimes try to survive the weirdness of rural living.

Ravilob is just under two months old and updates every monday wednesday and friday. Drawn and writen By Casey Williams, the Ravilob style is hand drawn and lettered in recognition of older comic titles like Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes. The main characters featured, so far, are: Hugo Ravilob, He is the character that we see lifes daily problems through. Mort: An alien that came to earth and stayed for the beer. Robot, A completely innocent being trying to understand humanities foibles.

I have an OFFline comic if that counts. It's called "Evolution Comics" and I'm almost done with the second issue. Jesus teams up with a dinosaur, an atheist, a Mormon robot, and Shiva to defeat Satan, who works as a mattress salesman. Self-produced because my drawing is not too great, but I'm getting better! I've never thought of putting it online because honestly I really prefer comics you hold in your hands. I mean, I love QC and xkcd and Dinosaur Comics and all, but I can't read them on the bus. But yeah maybe when the second issue is printed I'll plug it here as being for sale, if that's allowed.

Hey, so not to be the asshole who registers just to promote his own stuff, but...

Really, though, I'm a big QC fan.  I've just never come to the forums.  Anyway, I just started a webcomic at:

Cronny.com (http://www.cronny.com)

I've been reading webcomics with the ambition of creating my own for a long time.  I'm trying to avoid what I've identified as the typical pitfalls and cliches of webcomics (knowledge of nerd culture notwithstanding), and I've tried my best to make it stand out.  I already have a couple of general story arcs that I'm building towards, with enough room to dick around with that it'll hopefully still feel unconstrained.  If you have any input or criticism, I'd love to hear it.  Or if you like it and want to link to it from your site, that would also be great.

I have no idea how to get my name out there.  I agree that the internet is most definitely a meritocracy, but I think that for webcomics, there's sort of a missing step.

1) Create webcomic
2) Tell your friends
X) Miraculously get lots of hits
3) Start selling t-shirts/Quit your day job

I'm very serious about this thing, but I'm a little bit at a loss as to how to make people aware of it.  Jeph, I'm new to the boards, so I have no idea how much you check out threads like these, but if you want to take a look, I'd really appreciate it.

Another sketch blog?  WTF?

http://steelandstripe.blogspot.com/

Your sketches are really cute!

Cronny: Just like with any art form, webcomics have to fill a need, if "need" is the word for it. QC is my soap-opera comic, Dinosaur Comics is for the lulz, A Softer World is for the dark lulz, xkcd and Overclocked for the nerd quotient, and so on. Figure out what niche you want to cover with your comic. Of course most webcomics are around for YEARS before they become mega-popular so I wouldn't quit your day job just yet. Seriously it is really hard to support yourself with a web business in this day and age and that has to be even harder when the only "product" you're selling (aside from t-shirts) are your ideas.

(If you do sell t-shirts try to send them out promptly! Wink wink.)

As for the self promotion, we have two sites, Darth JayDer (http://www.darthjayder.com) is our home for all our comics (1 is almost complete and the other two are in the process, and  The LOST myspace (http://www.myspace.com/lostcomicbook) where you can download our first issue for free.  The book is called "Lost" and it has nothing to do with that TV show.  It's a romantic comedy for guys.

We would love to hear what people think about our book.

Hi, I've been reading QC for a while now, and it was a blast meeting Jeph at ComicCon '08. Would have been the highlight, but damnit, Don Bluth showed up and stole his thunder. :)

Shameless plug? Oh, I can totally do this. It helps, for my comics, if you're familiar with the Battletech universe.

Comic One: MINIATURE RULES (http://battletech.cavaliercavalry.com/mrules.htm) (Every Monday)

In the 31st Century, war has come to dominate the galaxy. Five noble houses and 7 warrior clans fight over the vacant throne of a deposed Star Lord. While the nobles and leaders manuever for position, the ordinary soldiers are focused on one thing:

Making you laugh, as they could care less.

Battletech novels are all about the all-too serious leaders, but with 4000 planets, you can be sure things go wrong on a regular basis. Follow along with Lootbag, JadeHellbringer, the Capellan Twins, Director Starslayer and the rest to take an irreverent look at the true day-to-day workings of the Inner Sphere, all in Miniature Rules

Miniature Rules: Fleecing the game world since 2007.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Comic Two: Operation: Red Array (http://comics.cavaliercavalry.com/redarray.htm) (Every other Thursday)

In 3067, the Word of Blake launched their Jihad. One of the first worlds to fall was Chara III, also known as Pacifica, and the place where the Cresent Hawks reassembled. For four and a half years the population has suffered under the Blakist yoke, but now, in 3072, the Lyran offensive has finally caught up. The Blakists hold the planet, but now the Commonwealth is going to take it back!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's a new project coming, and talks are in works to find someone to take over the currently defunct BreadBox (http://comics.cavaliercavalry.com/breadbox.htm).

It will probably go unnoticed in the sea of brilliance around here, but my stickman comic, Social Networking (link in sig) needs SOME readers. A comic about whatever comes into my head, its only on comic 3 and already on a wobbly heading due to lazy artist (i'm the writer). Most of the future comics should look more like comic one (graphics-wise), and we should actually start drawing it soon, on a tablet like his great Jephness uses.

Hey, I'm new here, but I saw this thread and decided to post.

I write, draw, color, sometimes get too busy to do....

http://www.grumpycomics.com

yay!

I put in all my effort and I've been working as hard as I can with college and work to get it up, running and awesome.

I'm super proud of pages 39 onward, and feel I've been improving since the early pages..

It's about some friends, they get involved in odd adventures. The first and main story line gives the main character Evan, an  Artificial intelligence built into his computer and the likes of "Squid Connery". Evan has friends Willow, Scott and Patrick to help him out.

By the way, Evan kinda has emo hair sometimes, as much as I try to avoid it, it comes out that way. Don't judge him. He's pretty cool.

I'd really appreciate comments and critiques. Knowing my weak points and improving on them is the best way to get better right? lol.

I make fun of myself and create bad art.
And I let those to thingers have a bastard child just now.

The idea came from a trusty forumite. He might have been yanking my chain.
The stuff I showed him was very rude and tactless though. (It was grading my little brother's barely-legal female friends' fuckability.)
But there is so much more to me than sex jokes.

On my site, www.fifthstories.org/ (http://www.fifthstories.org/) I've got a vampire/werewolf story thing running in serialized form, kinda like a weekly webcomic, but I'm better with words than images, so it's all text. I'd Say this,

A) Don't diss your comic because you don't want people to see it and think it's bad because it's your first shot at the strip. It doesn't look awful to me.
B) If you ARE going to color it and make better jokes, DO IT. I think that if you think you're funny, then you should be it and do your best.

Strip one can change to something better by strip five, so keep doing it. I posted my comic www.grumpycomics.com and I think that I've improved a lot, but I wish I stood by my comic before. I think that if you try to be positve about it, you will get feed back. Seriously, Keep at it and it will show if you work hard.

So, does anyone have any comments for me too? :{D

Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: BrilliantEraser on 14 Mar 2009, 20:09
Here's one: you don't need to quote something written right above your own post. Uh, also. I guess constructive criticism is warranted?

Some Assembly Required: cute overall story. Some of the jokes just made me groan, but at least they garnered a response. And the art has definitely improved since your first strip. One thing that bothered me in the first few strips was how you drew a three-quarter profile face. Basically, it looked awkward and wrong. BUT. You seem to have gotten it down now. Only other thing I can think of is maybe change your coloring/inking style? For some reason the entire comic seems 'fuzzy' to me. I mean, not clear or crisp.

Abstract Thinking: change the layout and colors of your website! It's incredibly jarring, unappealing, and does not seem to be very user-friendly. And I agree with what joesoar said. If you keep insisting that your comic sucks, no one will want to read it. Second. Get a better inking marker/pen for your artist. Or use a different program to edit everything in. The lines are hella sketchy and blurry, overall just not making a good first impression. Last. Keep at it! My comic SUCKED when I took over drawing from my friend (she had time commitment issues), but I kept at it. Twenty-plus strips later, I can actually say I'm starting to like my own art.

Dude who makes Everyday Heroes. Please put the nav buttons at the top AND bottom of your comic. Scrolling past the comic AND comment box just to read the next strip is very impractical.
Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: joesoar on 15 Mar 2009, 13:35
Thanks for the critique! I'm trying out a different approach to the coloring, so hopefully it will look better soon.

I realize this is my third post, but I think this thread would be better if you know... people did comment on other people's comic. Otherwise, every like 3 weeks someone puts up a link no one really sees. I got a few more hits from the forums cause I posted something again, and that would be cool for anyone who is trying to wrtie a comic you know?

Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: joesoar on 17 Mar 2009, 13:33
To Brilliant Erasure,

I'm glad you cleared up the little bit about your friend drawing the first few pages, because it makes sense as to the sudden change. You have definitely improved the art into the past few comics. The backgrounds look much better than before, and so do the characters. I hate to say it, but the only problem I have with the art, is that it bothers me, but I'm not sure why. It's not like a huge bother, there's just something that makes me think it seems weird, (I realize that is the worst comment but it is how I feel)  BUT, the proportions are pretty good, the expressions are pretty good as well, though the faces feel off. I feel like it is the same issue I have with my own comic, being that I just need to keep doing it and get better. You have a solid style though, It's not polished, but you are improving and that's what counts. I think you have an interesting story building up, and as you keep going it will get better.

I'll take another look later though, I have to run and a few min. is never great for a real look at a comic.

To Jeans,

I think individual threads would work, but this thread never falls down to never land. It stays up top and so people who posted a while back (like me) have a better chance at the thread being seen again. I don't know though, I don't spend a huge amount of time on forums really, so I lack in the rules of such things.

Definitely!  The best part is making sure our mouths look right for the text. I want to record a photo shoot sometime.  Half the time we'll just keep saying the lines over and over, other times we'll start criticizing the others lines and go off on a tangent, but we're all talking at the same time... it's entertaining to say the least.

Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: joesoar on 03 May 2009, 14:02
Okay, first of all, Sorry to Brilliant Eraser, I typo'd all over your name. Whoops. Anyway, I think some of your recent backgrounds look too... close to the characters. Maybe try making the background outlines smaller, compared to the characters' outlines. Since the characters tend to have thin outlines, and then the background outlines are huge in comparison.

P-Frank - I think the art in your comics is pretty cool, but I can't get into the story or anything. That's nothing against you, that's probably just me personally, but I really so like the art. The colors seem to blend together nicely, almost making me wish the outlines were more defined. It really seems like there is a solid comic there though.

Gilead- I agree with Jeph, you have a cool style, and the comics are pretty funny, but it looks like you stood over the pictures with a digital camera and hoped for the best. Even just playing with the color levels in photoshop or a photo editing program would do wonders for it. (I think Gimp is the free-photoshop right?).

Ohwellwhatever - All I can say is that I really like your style. Its good.

Norton Quintessential - I can't say much about your comic yet, at least until you put some more up. I haven't been a big fan of photo comics, but I have seen some that make me chuckle. Once you put more up, then I think that I could give you more feedback.

Jeph- I have to say, that for some reason, Dora's hair doesn't feel like its attached. I like the style, but at least in the last page, I feel like it looks similar to somebody cutting out hairstyles and pasting them over pictures of themselves. Does that make sense? Also, the only problem I have with your site is the news. After all this time I still miss the news being next to the comic, up on the top.

That's all I have to say for this. Man I seem kinda high on my horse... I just think its good for people to critique others every once in a while, and with that I'm always happy for feedback! :{D <--- Mustache smiley

67thavenue: Your comic looks goo enough to put into print. I like the art style, and you seem to have some good characters, (I haven't had the chance to fully read the comic, but I'm out of school now so I'll have plenty of time). I just wanted to say, you have a crap-ton of ads on the bottom of your webpage that aren't filled up. I don't know if they were filled, or normally are, but if they aren't, you could try deleting like say, half of them, and it would look a lil' nicer without all of the "your ad here" buttons, and maybe you'd be making some money off of them instead of all the free ones. Just an idea, but seriously, your comic looks good and I look forward to reading it.

"i herd u liek greke mthys"

I've finally launched my comic, Zeus & Sons (http://zeuscomic.comoj.com), a comical rendition of Greek myths set in our times - no togas allowed! Will most probably have somewhat NSFW bits later on, you know how the ancients were, right?
I draw it on a tablet, with a European, somewhat cartoony style and simple shading; you can have an artwork sample here (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,16191.msg815996.html#msg815996).

Since it's brand new, the archive has a grand total of one page, but as I'll start telling the different legends of ancient Greece, it'll fill up regularly.

Me and my girlfriend have started a blog that isn't so much a comic but a collection of pictures. She does ALL the art, but near enough all the ideas come out of my imagination. We've only done this one so far but they don't take too long to do so we're hoping to do a new one near enough every day. Anyway, here (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7OUPDQfFyMs/SiammIx3C2I/AAAAAAAAAAk/vL9F6F9Rr5A/s1600-h/blogcolour.jpg) is the first one.

She draws them in black fineliner then scans them into photoshop and colours them there. We've decided to leave the colouring fairly rough because we feel it adds a sense of innocence and childishness to the art. And we will be moving to plain paper rather than lined when I get a chance to go into town and buy her a pad. Any suggestions or criticisms are very welcome, and if you want to follow us on blogger then click (http://www.artistviamooch.blogspot.com)

Although she has now posted her thoughts on me. All we discussed is the few things we felt should be in there and went off and wrote our own.

I realize that, I know what its like to have everything in the world to do, and something like this would be the last thing on your list.

But from the perspective of me, I feel like I can't read it for long or even comment on it with nothing to see. It's like if I use stumbleupon, I see the one image once, and unless it is more amazing than sliced bread, I tend to forget about it. I go to your blog, yes, it is nice to see a boyfriend/girlfriend comic team, who seem genuinely happy together, and the one comic is interesting perhaps, but, unless I come back to this forum and look for it, chances are I will forget about it in a couple of days when I have to draw a new page for my comic. QC and Dr.McNinja will gladly distract me for an hour, and life will go on.

That's how I feel about one page worth of content. It's my first impression, and whether you are serious about your comic, or you just want to have fun and draw and put it up, it's just another site on the internet. You need readers. You seem to have good ideas, and your girlfriend has some talent it would seem. That's all I can say right now. If there IS talent and there ARE good ideas, it would be a shame to miss out on a lot of viewers because they didn't see enough before they went onto their next distraction.

I know I'm not doing comics professionally, but I do read them a lot. I can at least say what I feel as a reader.  I hate coming off as uppity, as I say just about every time I post, but I like getting feedback, and so therefore I'm gonna give it out too, whether it's nice or not.

blanktom and PrickofDestiny:

get some more stuff to look at!! :)

Now that my exams are over and that I'm getting closer and closer to my favourite bit of the legends (with more characters), I'll probably get content at a better rate, and better quality lineart as well. Although I'm definitely not a pro comic artist, I'm committed to getting that comic on good tracks and improving it. Not necessarily for the dangling carrot of readership or popularity, but because I enjoy entertaining (and spreading knowledge of a topic I'm interested in).

Glad to know you liked it enough to want more!

Joesoar, thats for the comments. You'll be glad to know that she found herself rather bored in a lecture today and managed to pen 3 new drawings which she then later found time to colour, so there's a few new posts! Hopefully, if her creative mood stays the way it is, and my imagination continues distracting me from more practical matters, we'll get a few more done over the weekend.

Now blanktom, that's something to look at! :D

I have to say I sort of dig the lined paper, if you like that innocent, or kiddish look to it, then the line paper really works for me. It sort of reminds me of the early XKCD strips, heck, even just pictures I doodled in math. Really good ideas that you may or may not have the chance to recreate. That sort of work really amuses me. I will be sure to check back soon.

And PrickofDestiny, you have a really good idea going for you and I'd like nothing more than to see you get even more into it and crank some of the good stuff out. There's never a reason you don't have to do your best on something just for fun. It shows when you work hard at something, which you obviously have.

Good luck to us all.

NEWSFLASH - WE'RE STICKING WITH THE LINED PAPER.

After I suggested getting a pad of plain A4 to Vicky last night, she told me she preferred the lined, and I didn't mind either way. As has been said, it gives the feeling of like idle doodles, great ideas you have in your head that go away if you dont put them down.

Pyroboarder69-

I just wanted to say that it's awesome you wanna do a music comic, and I would like to see you pull it off.

With that, I wanna say two things, one you need to work on your art. I know it sucks if you put a bunch of time in and then somebody says it needs more work. I get that a lot, but I've been trying to get better over time. I try to do warm up drawings, I've gotten a lot better with building characters from the ground up, stick figure to blocky, to details ect. It helps. I like renting anatomy books from the library and just trying to replicate all the drawings from it. ESPECIALLY hands. You're gonna be drawing a lot of hands, you can hide them. Not on a guitar. Hands are the worst, but if you got good hands the rest of your character will benefit from it.

Second, I think you need to try to fix up the site a bit. I didn't like having to figure out how to click on the comic just to read the others, AND not having the news with it. I really like reading the news because it gives some insight or seven the progression of your thought on the comic. Plus the font you use on the big buttons is a bit hard to read. Not terrible, but I think there are other cool fonts to try. Check out Blambot.com, they have some awesome free fonts that an independant artist can use for free!

Good luck to you, I'm excited to see some more stuff when you make it!
Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic

 indecisive-

I think you're doing a pretty good job just putting out comics and making them interesting enough to read. I think you need to push the jokes a little more really. I also think you would benefit from looking at some anatomy books, I think that with  your style, the characters look good, but I think that they could look better, even if it is more catoony. I think that you could also really work on expressions. When your characters get hit or laugh or imagine, they need to look like they're doing what they're doing, The very fist page it looks like walter is excited that somebody is breaking into his house. Or at least happy about it.

Keep it up though.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I'm definitely trying to improve my art all around (and think that I am little by little), but its helpful to hear specifics on what needs improvement. Same goes for the writing, really. Thanks again.
Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: joesoar on 28 Jun 2009, 13:17
Of course! There is no way you can do anything like a comic and not get better over time! Some people can grasp art or writing easier than others, but for the most part it is just practice and working hard. Getting feedback is the best way to know your weaknesses and try to focus on them.

A lot of professional webcomic artists were kind enough to give me feedback when I asked, like John Allison, Chris Hastings, Zach Wiener, they're all super nice and pretty prompt on getting back to me. I think there are a few who I asked who are pretty busy or get so many e-mails they can't always do it, but it doesn't hurt to ask, if they can they can and if not it's ok! Their opinions are also worth a bit more than mine cause they can give feedback based on what they have tried and has been successful for them.

Oh yeah, Prickofdestiny, I was gonna say that all that white around your comic is kinda distracting. You have such a gray site that the white pops too much, then takes away from the comic.

John Allison of SGR gave me that tip when my comic had big white boarders too. I was just hoping to pass it on! :{D

Well I guess I *could* make the marble on the background white instead of grey...
(besides, I think I chose that size for the comics because it's the A4 format)

Jeans does have a point, there is a lot of stuff on the site, its sort of cramped. Heck, I don't know why I have a twitter on my site cause I get like 7 readers unless I run PW ads.

You really have something interesting going, focus on it. I would really consider fixing those borders, OR changing the site to fit the comic better.

Jeans, I;m glad you're also being honest because you're right, sometimes a devil's advocate is needed to make something the best it can be lol.

I worry about that too, but I hated it in high school when my teachers would just congratulate me and not always push me. now I feel way behind what I'll be going into by the time I make it to art school (I'm at community college to save money).

If I keep this up though, I hope I'll come out number one at school. I am determined to get better in the next 3 years and beyond.
Title: Re: Plug Yr Comic
Post by: PrickOfDestiny on 01 Jul 2009, 04:16
I am going to be super harsh, but it's for your own good, I think! This is my subjective opinion and you are allowed to hate me for it. Maybe it's a great design and I just suck.

General site design... I think maybe you'd be better off with

-a smaller, less intrusive logo
-ditching the flashy IRC link
-ditching the links on the right-hand side to digg, facebook etc
-losing the twitter feed
-losing the archives dropdown over the comic
-removing the quote by Athena

Basically, make sure what gets the attention is the comic, not the extras. The comic is what you're trying to get people interested in, slogging through added extras is just an annoyance - twitter, for example: You're an artist just starting out, so you don't have a lot of regular readers. Regular readers are the only ones who care about the author whatsoever. Right now it looks like you're putting yourself before the comic, that you're doing this for attention, which is not a good thing. Finally, get a different background if you're going to keep the white comic borders, they don't work together at all - preferrably, one that doesn't look like it's from a Geocities page circa 1998.
I'm definitely not taking that as jackassery, and appreciate the feedback. I'll take the advice and explain the reason for some of the points criticised :)
- Smaller logo: Agreed on that one. Next website-tweaking session (at the moment, the priority is on releasing the next page this week), I'll shrink it.
- Flashy IRC link: I forgot to stop the flashing. It's a habit for me to make links to new features blink or otherwise attract attention, and the IRC has been there for long enough for my few regulars to have noticed it. A few new readers entered the room too, it was nice to get to chat with them live, sort of.
- Bookmarking site links: Maybe I should make them smaller, just thought giving my readers the possibility to link to the site on Digg and such would increase my potential exposure and possibly my reader base. I should definitely do something about those though, they are too big.
- Twitter feed: The feed is actually much more about the comic than about myself. Even when mentioning I now understand Flash, because the link between this and a website is kind of obvious. Maybe I should put it on the right-hand column site under the "quick cast reminder".
- Navbar over the comic: True, this is kind of redundant considering there's one under the comic.
- Quote: The quote actually changes every time you reload the page.

So! What would you think about this layout instead?

I remember posting in one of these threads ages ago, I guess a new one was made.

Anyhow, my comic, Nuclear Powered Toaster, is back after about two and a half years on the bench.  It happens when you're dependent on others for art dispensing.  You can find it here (http://www.nuclearpoweredtoaster.com), or by clicking the link in my sig.  Decided to reboot; only got 44 strips in last time, and not all of them still did it for me, so we went at it from another angle.  So if you want to go check it out and let me know what you think, I'd be most obliged.  No such thing as too many critiques.

there is potential here, so tell your artist to do the following things:
-erase her pencils after inking

Hainted Holler. It's based loosely on me and my wife and the small southern town we live in.To that I added Biscuit Pete, a superhero who can summon and command biscuits at will, and The Boon, a baboon owned by the main characters that has been trained to attack annoying people and rape them in the ear until they pass out. We're fairly new, just hit one month yesterday, but I guarantee we are the best webcomic drawn at work on copier paper with a Sharpie and Ball point pen you've ever seen. And if you start reading now you'll get caught up in time for The Boon to make his appearance in next weeks storyline.

i am a part of a community called Global Comic Jam. if you are unfamiliar, the concept is that people collaborate on a comic, each writing and drawing one page at a time in a round robin fashion. it is alot of fun. unfortunatley, after a string of major technical failures during a site overhaul, the thing is on an extended hiatus.

however, you can still check it all out here: http://globalcomicjam.com/index.php
including my two favorites, Surface (http://globalcomicjam.com/thumbnails.php?album=1) and Fusion Odyssey (http://globalcomicjam.com/thumbnails.php?album=5)

Hey guys,
I'm not a comic author, but i've always been a big fan of the webcomic format, and all things collaborative.  Hence last weekend's project: panellab.com.  Have a look and let me know what you think.
Cheers,

It's not exactly a webcomic and it's not exactly a graphic novel and it's not exactly epic poetry, but it is exactly awesome:

http://www.cindylooyou.com (http://www.cindylooyou.com)

I'm the poet, and my friend Hilary (http://greenteadoodles.wordpress.com (http://greenteadoodles.wordpress.com)) is the artist.  This story--which is more Doctor Who than Doctor Seuss, despite superficial appearances--was developed on Hilary's blog by a kind of jazz-like process, the two of us riffing off each other's goofy ideas.  We've cleaned it up and a bit and given it a site of its own, where it'll run for the rest of the fall, more-or-less, with new pages appearing on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Check it out, along with the other things we've done on Hilary's art blog.  Most people do illustrated poems.  We're more into poeticized illustrations, and we've got a new comic in development that'll appear early in the new year.

I really shouldnt say anything until I've finished fixing up the site, but I'm actually running a site for fledgling comics and I do need listings and people ready to step up to the plate for features. Actually I could probably run the features right now since that part of the site is up and running. anyway, the site url is www.tealcitrus.com

also, pm me if you want in, because I'm not sure on the status of the email addresses on the site yet.

We're in the middle of reorganization of the site, but we've been at this whole webcomicing thing for a year now... A lot of people have referenced the visual inspiration from QC, and we got a lot of information from Jeph on how to actually comic, so any similarity is out of respect, not deliberately trying to rip him off :)

My boyfriend and I recently started PancakeCookie ! (http://www.pancakecookie.com)

It's an autobio comic for now, but who knows what the future holds?
It's still in the early stages, and our schedule only allows us to update once a week, but it's been fun to do. :) I hope to keep it going.
(I'd also like to add the ability to comment on comics..but i don't handle the web stuff, my boyfriend does! aaaaaaaaaaa)

Thanks for your time!

November Shift (http://www.novembershift.com) is my long-format science-fiction comic that takes place at an engineering school about a hundred years in the future on a low Earth orbit space station, and it's very character-centric. (:

It also has a lot of SCIENCE and ENGINEERING (and everyone knows that engineering is like math, only louder. (http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TO&Product_Code=WON-ENGINEERING&Category_Code=WON))

Pretty much the only thing on my little blog right now is Act 1 and half of Act 2 of my revamp of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, done by the cast of Questionable Content. It was a project for school back when I was just a wee lurker. I took all of the art from different QC strips, erased the words and put in my own.  I would love a little feedback.

Is it a comic?  Is it a novel?  Is it something entirely new?

You decide:  http://www.songsofalbion.com (http://www.songsofalbion.com)

We've followed Jeph's "First Law of Good WebComics" (Don't Suck) to tell the story of what REALLY happened to Christopher Marlowe after he "died" (spoiler alert!  It didn't involve writing plays for that "Other Poet"!)

Set on the Far Side of the World, in Sir Francis Drake's secret colony of New Albion, it's a character-driven, humorous, illustrated, serial Web novel updating Monday/Wednesday/Friday.  But New Albion isn't just on the Far Side of the World... it's perhaps ten leagues beyond it...

Not my comic, but a friend and co-worker of mine has begun illustrating a comic written by a friend of his, and has thrown the first 9 pages up for preview on a tumblr as well a synopsis that imo sounds pretty badass. They're hoping to get it published, or raise a bit of cash to help the work on it full time and publish it themselves. Check it out, share it about, donate some money, or just let me know what you think!

Carl-E, thanks for your kind words. I used to write and draw independent comics: Blue Moon: The Adventures of Lyssa and the Pirates (Groovy, Kinda is a sequel), and Utopia, Unlimited. And my influences are the usual: Berni Wrightson, N.C. Wyeth, Mike Kaluta, (you can tell how old I am) Joseph Clement Cole, and Franklin Booth.

Also, in my defense, I will say that I drew that strip months ago.

I've started a webcomic centered around a grad student who works in a physics lab (they say write what you know, after all...) Many of the stories are drawn from my own life, though there are some less realistic elements of the comic, such as, of course, the robot. The artwork is computer-generated using Povray models (http://povray.org) that I've coded, with Poser (http://poser.smithmicro.com/poser.html) models for the human characters. Since I don't have much time outside of work for the comic, I keep to a slow but regular update schedule, updating each Sunday.

I may as well post here. QC did inspire me to start it, after all:  http://wordwearycomic.blogspot.com (http://wordwearycomic.blogspot.com) I just celebrated my year-mark today. It's a slice-of-life comic based mostly on my own life, humorous, sardonic and cynical. Since I'm not much of an artist, I've really been focusing on storycraft and dialogue. I've had a hard time finding a large audience, but I love working on it and don't plan on stopping any time soon.

All right, I'm just gonna ask you all - Why are you NOT reading Thomas Overbeck's hilarious comic about time travel, Times Like This (http://timeslikethis.com)?

If it's because you don't wanna archive binge, well - I've got the thing for you!

The first 460 strips - TRANSCRIBED! (http://www.scribd.com/doc/87355786/TLT-SxS-1-460)

(Keep in mind - some strips are NSFW if you actually read through them.)

That happens if you put the link in quotes, or copy the code from another place where quotes are used (as in HTML, of course). Unfortunately some forums require quotes, and others require no quotes; this forum is a no quotes place, so you need to take care!

I've been messing with the idea of starting my own comic.  I don't really have my own website yet, nor do I know how to set one up, and I've been posting the comics that I do have completed on my facebook page.  It kinda feels weird posting about them here because it seems like the other people on this thread have been doing this for a while, and I am just now posting mine on the Internet.  I guess I'll just start with the first one I posted.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=366257420099325&set=a.366255600099507.81786.100001452106764&type=3&theater (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=366257420099325&set=a.366255600099507.81786.100001452106764&type=3&theater)

Please tell me what y'all think.  And God's sake don't hold back on the criticism if you have any.

I'm sure this happens more often than anyone would like, but I started a brand new webcomic and I'd like people to read it.  It's called How to Live and it's about recent college grad and his best friend (who happens to be a ghost).  Right now I only have it up on my Tumblr page and I've been updating every week on Mondays.  Take a look and tell me you love it...and if you don't I'd actually like to know that as well.  You can read it at  http://howtolivecomic.tumblr.com/.  Enjoy!
