So I saw the Tenacious D movie and made me realise something - I need to rock the fuck out more!
To that end, I'm learning to sweep pick. But I don't really listen to all that much metal, so I need your help
What are good songs with sweep picking in them? By "good" I mean nothing you'd hear in a guitar store - actual songs, not just shred sessions please. With rockin' solos.

basically any Yngwie Malmsteen (even though he's a douche and his music sucks)
It's actually kinda hard to find a band that consistently uses sweep picking.

I'm pretty sure Avenged Sevenfold implemented some sweep picking on City of Evil. I don't remember though, I haven't
listened to it in a while. But, I'm almost certain they even mentioned using it in an interview.

You have an extra G in there. And no, he doesn't sweep pick. He does lots and lots of tapping. Quite good at it, too. As for Avenged Sevenfold, I only recall sweep picking at the end of the solo in "Bat Country" for like a second and a half. It's probably on other songs, but I can't remember them, as I hated the album anyways.

I love that track! A couple of my friends were racing to learn it a while ago, I wonder if either of them did..
And, dudes, I can't bring myself to listen to teH A7x - even if they use sweep picking sensibly, there's still the problem of their songs sucking giant balls

Avenged Sevenfold suck but I can't help kinda liking Bat Country. What bands are like Avenged Sevenfold but don't suck (I used to listen to a few good screamo0ish bands but lost them)?

They're a West Coast hardcore group. That scene has made some of the worst bands evar famous.
Ah, actually, they're not metalcore/hardcore anymore. They've become some form of metal, not sure what to call
them now, really. But they don't even scream anymore.
Oh, not that I'm trying to get you to give them another chance or anything by the way, carry on.

Actually, what they've become Guns n Roses, but even more annoying and approximately 1/8th as catchy.
The solo to Avenged Sevenfold's "Second Heartbeat" has a heap of sweep picking, and it's on the album before City of Evil, so there's not as much nasally singing and ridiculous lyrics.

*laughs* I didn't suggest them because I expected anyone on this forum to like them- I'd have to be totally unfamiliar with this forum, but I figured they'd probably have some reasonably good examples of sweep picking if you were trying to learn.
I have a horrible ear though, I didn't catch the sweep picking in "Second Heartbeat", I need to listen to that CD again. XP

I know Tangaroa use sweep picking but I don't know on what songs since I'm rather lacking in technical knowledge. Try Vietnamese Killing Queens.

Check out Between the Buried and Me's "Selkies: The Endless Obsession", the last minute is a sweep solo, and "Alaska" with a sweep intro. Both have cool parts that could help you get into five and six string sweeping. Also Protest The Hero's "Heretics & Killers" and "Turn Soonest To The Sea" which sorta resembles "Alaska" in the intro.

Quick update regarding sweep picking: I can go up and down three strings at a time! I can go up (or downstroke...) four strings at a time, but I can't go back down (upstroke). Also I can't really work it into a song or even move around the fretboard much when I do it. Anyone got any tips? I asked my shred-tastic friend and he just kept shouting YNGWIE at me.

Cynic - Veil of Maya; there's a totally awesome sweep across all six strings in the guitar solo section, but it isn't the main centerpiece of the solo, nor is the solo the main centerpiece of the song. Also, the rhythm section is doing something during the solo, which I guess Cynic owes to it's fusion heritage. Also, Allan Holdsworth does some cool sweeps here and there, as well as being an overall insanely good and unique guitarist.

I was gonna suggest BTBAM, but I didn't think they were a good thing to inflict on the unsuspecting. I like BTBAM, but I'm quite aware that they're pretty fucked up.

Nah, I picked them because I knew for a fact that they used it at some point or another and that it probably wouldnt be the hardest example of it, but you can play the "That band sucks so I'm going to judge a playing technique based on them" game if you want.

Take a broom... Then take your guitar... And sweep it like the guitar god you are!
Er, the fret hand portion of sweep picking can be described as when multiple, adjacent strings are articulated ? or acutely controlled by the fretting fingers ? and thus sounded in succession without ringing together (as opposed to chords, in which all strings are held down throughout the pick stroke). The fingers cannot hold down multiple strings at once, nor can they make individual fretting actions. Rather, the motion is seen as a 'rolling' of the fingers in the direction of the desired notes across the fretboard, rather than up or down the neck (which is generally how many scalar patterns are constructed).

Commenting further on Avenged Sevenfold, they get a bad rap because their fans are predominantly scenester bitches.
They are NOT like Guns 'N Roses, that's the second most popular dismissal right after "pffft metalcore/hardcore OMG suck guuuh." Now that they've nixed the screaming and growling (which is due to the singer straining the necessary parts of his anatomy for said gruff vocal stylings), they sound a shitload like IRON MAIDEN and not really at all like GUNS 'N ROSES.
But Iron Maiden doesn't nail down their sound either, because they still have elements of SoCal punk in their lyrics and their overall songwriting. Bands like Bad Religion, AFI, The Offspring. That might be a bad thing for some of you ? oh well. I think it's a damn good thing, and I think Avenged Sevenfold are a damn good band.
Live, by the way, Shadows doesn't sound quite so whiny and he actually has testicles (or so it sounds like). And the nigh virtuoso-level musicianship remains intact. I was impressed.

Everything you just said is based on personal preference. You come from the people who don't like it. You have just as much right to dislike it as the rest of the people in your group of people who dont like it. Why dont we mention bands that use sweep picking instead of doing personal reviews of the band's mentioned, how's that?

Well the point is A7X uses sweep picking quite a bit. Also see: Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Trivium, Black Label Society, Pantera, (not so much on Pantera, and even less on BLS).
Conversationally, sweep picking is also reffered to as "economy picking" if it's used more sporadically (i.e. whenever it's better for the particular situation than alternate picking.) Here's a good example in A minor:
(sweep down) (back to alternate) (sweep back up) (little bendy trill lick) (one more sweep up)

If you can figure out where to best place the up and downstrokes in between the sweeps, that's economy picking, and a great way to employ sweep picking in actual songs, rather than Yngwie wankfests.
