I was playing Guitar Hero two and it said a mini-fridge in the studio is more important than the bassist. That sucks for us bassists so here is a forum to talk about how much we actually rock. I know some people are thinking: A Bass huh? Isn't that a fish? Why is it in the music section? Anyhow here are my top five dead or alive (bassists). If you don't know them I highly suggest you check them out. This is either for technical skill or musical ability or both. If you can't think up 5 just put as many as you can. But it makes me sad...

Freedom (the dude from Total Obliteration of Humanity) is probably at the top of my list, because he's good at playing fills, and can do a bass solo fucking right. And can also double thumb. And Chaoth, from uneXpect. Half because he plays a nine-string bass that isn't a chapman stick, and half because the same reasons I gave for Freedom. The dude from Pavor is just apeshit crazy. And whoever is the bassist for Aghora and Cynic (fuck me, I've forgotten their names) are also bad ass, because their solos add to the songs and not to their own personal fame. And because fretless bass (as far as Cynic is concerned) is too hard for me to figure out.

I always think of John Entwistle from The Who when people are talking about great bassists. A friend talked me through some of the things he was doing and why they were exciting once and I did spontaneously start humping the speaker like a frisky dog, but I'm not actually that big a fan of the band, so I couldn't honestly put him on a list of my faves. Same reason why I'd put no jazz guys down, cos I'm just not that interested in any flavour of jazz I've dipped into, although I do enjoy hearing bods like Jimmy Garrison and of course Mingus.
Sooo... purely from the perspective of loving the sound of what they (have) played (so far):
1. George Porter Jr (from The Meters... tops my list for Just Kissed My Baby alone, but he did great stuff behind Dr John and others)
2. Pino Palladino (for the stuff he did on those D'Angelo and Common albums, not so much for his fretless noodlings on bloody Paul Young records :oops: )
3. Peter Hook (from Revenge :wink:)
4. Holger Czukay (I think of One More Night straight away... AAGRHJAGRHJASRGSRHJRAS SO EXCITED AGAIN)
5. Larry Graham (from The Family Stone... I really should hate the inventor of slap bass, and my favourite Sly bassline is actually from after Larry left, but whatever. So good.)

I don't know if anyone else on here listens to !T.O.O.H.!, but Freedom's stuff on Rad A Trest (Order and Punishment) is really pretty good. I thought maybe you had, but if you haven't, then I advise you find some. Some of my favorite grindcore.

I was going to do long detailed write-ups about each of these guys justifying their position, but I like them all for such different reasons I probably wouldn't be able to stop changing the order. They are not in order of specific technical ability, but rather how well I feel they play within the context of the bands they play in, and quite frankly, being a massive Rush nerd, I am compelled to put Geddy at the top of the list, although I would probably say I enjoy playing McCartney's basslines more.

I left off the obvious ones like Wooten and Jaco. I tried to pick players who are actually in bands and write/play music that isn't just centered around the bass work. Even though Gordian Knot is technically a one-man project, Malone writes music that has tons of great instrumental ideas outside of just wicked basslines.
Also, with regards to Hat's list, I was considering Entiwistle for a while, but I totally forgot about Geddy!

Actually I forgot all about Myung, I should probably replace Clarke with him, just because he is ridiculously good at doing what a bassists job is typically meant to be, ie keeping the groove in the pocket, or whatever silly terminology is used. The fact that he can do this in a band as ridiculously technical as Dream Theater makes him extremely fantastic in my eyes. I feel bad for excluding Steve Harris and Tony Levin as well, but it is just one of those things.
I also agree with the idea of not judging a bassist in this sort of discussion based on how good their solo work is, simply because although I can enjoy a bassists solo project, I will never enjoy as much as I enjoy their work in a collective with other brilliant musicians.

I think Jo Bench is really the suprise one here and its more because I like her sound rather then her technical abillity. The bass in Bolt Thrower always sounds so bitching, its distorted and heavy as fuck and sounds absolutley perfect for the music. There one of the few bands I know where you go, Holy fuck that bass sounds good.

FACT: One of my good friends, and the bass player in my old band, is Les Claypool's nephew. This doesn't really do anything for any of the parties involved, but it's a fun fact to brag about, I guess.
Nate from Converge is all kinds of fun as a bass player. He has some ridiculous chops, but he also is consistantly the funniest motherfucker in the venue at any show I see them play...

I think from my cd collection im somewhat obliged to put in jaco and claypool.
Lets also add to that mike gordon from phish, seriously he can hold some shit together.
I think also jamerson should get a mention for playing on just about every motown record ever.
And finally chris squire from yes. i think hes an underrated man.
I think mccartney and sting are more song awesome song writers than players.

Mike Gordon from Phish. Everything this guy touches turns to gold. He worked with Leo Kottke!!
Les Claypool. This guy just keeps getting better; check out the Primus DVD Hallucinogenetics for a taste.
Gotta give a second to Holger from Can. What an incredible sense of groove and melody this guy has...
Paul McCartney. Such an obvious choice, but for very good reason. He makes technically complex music sound dirt simple.
Chris Wood of Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Maybe it's sad that the only great jazz bassist I can think of without having to look up personnel on jazz albums I own plays in a band that is routinely lumped in with the jam band scene. But who cares?! This guy can get really really out AND he can funk up a storm.

1. les claypool ( primus) i couldnt physically do a list on bassists and not mention him
2. jean baudin ( nuclear rabbit) although because of the size of his extended range basses he tends to just tap and pop, still fingers like biceps never lie.
3. flea ( red hot chili peppers) simply because he's a fantastic bassist and the success he's got from playing bass and the ammount of people he's brought to the instrument must be unreal
4.bill dickens ( http://www.billthebuddhadickens.com/page.php?8) once shorted out an entire street playing, or so the legend goes.

For some reason I always leave out Cliff in great bassist lists. I guess I'm an idiot. Jeff Caxide would've been #6 on my list if we could have 6, and in a similar vein to Noel Redding, Jack Bruce of Cream never fails to blow my mind.

I dont bother to include Burton in lists simply because the reason I like him is mostly because he is better than everyone that played bass in metallica afterwards, (or drums, or lead guitar for that matter) and I just wish real bad he hadn't died. I dont think this is a good enough reason to put him in a list of "THE BEST FIVE BASSISTS OF ALL TIME"
