Albini plus My Bloody Valentine would be amazing..

I'd also add Albini plus Metallica. That would be real weird but I think the results would be great.

Also: Justin Broadrick producing M83.

Does Greg Dulli produce his own records? Because whoever produces the Twilight Singers records could do great things with Interpol, I think.

Dave Fridmann + The Besnard Lakes
Steve Albini + Broken Social Scene

I think if you switched these two around it would actually work really well. A Fridmann-produced BSS record would probably sound deservedly lush, and Albini's approach would probably work really well with Besnard Lakes.

Every metal band should be produced by Bob Rock. Theoretically this would create such an anti-Rock furor that the man would find himself exiled or worse, and therefore the world would never have to endure another Bob Rock album.

Incidentally, screw you, Tommy, Interpol are good.

Jimmy Page + The Allman Brothers Band

I say this just because the already crazy layering of guitars would be made even crazier by the fact that Jimmy Page was the king of overproduction for a good while.

Last Flaming Lips album I heard (admittedly, Yoshimi...) I found really loud and exhausting.  Not loud as in too rocking, just mixed / mastered too loud.

Christian Fennesz + Mark Hollis (ex-Talk Talk)
Andi Toma & Jan St Werner (Mouse On Mars) + Stevie Wonder
The guy who's Mount Eerie (Phil Evrum?? I never remember) + Mariah Carey

I just don't hear the lossy clipping as much as you do I guess. I know it's really pronounced on The Woods but that's about it as far as I can tell. On the other hand I have shitty speakers and don't know what "FLAC" is.

Fridmann's production on the latest CYHSY album suxxx. It's like awful clipping was used as an extra instrument.

But here's one I would like to see:
The Neptunes + CSS.

What do you guys mean by clipping, exactly?? I thought his production has worked well for all the albums I've heard him work on.

Steve Albini + Broken Social Scene

I don't really understand this one. David Newfield's approach is one of the things that makes this band for me. I think their best songs gestate in the studio and that Newfield is extremely sympathetic to this concept. This approach would not work with Albini. You'd have to know the songs were finished and be able to lay them down in one or two. Albini is laissez-faire to the extreme. He sets up the microphones and you hear exactly what your band sounds like captured on magnetic tape. A jam-based band with a whole bunch of collaborators wouldn't suit this sort of recording process.

Wilco + Steve Albini would be interesting and might actually make me care about a new record in the slightest.

I want a Broken Social Scene album that sounds like they sound live. I figure Albini would be the best possible candidate for producing such an album.

Clipping is when audio loses quality because it's mixed so loud. Fridmann understands dynamics so, as much as Tommy might hate the man, his albums aren't clipping all the time. He, in fact, uses the unique opportunities offered by the production seat and the mixing board as an additional instrument, lending all his records a particular and identifiable sound. Albini and, arguably, Jim O'Rourke do the same, but in a markedly different way.

I like Fridmann's sound. Unfortunately, Gryff, I think the CYHSY record has problems for a lot of other reasons; the only track where I thought the clipping was really pronounced was the first one. The rest of the album was the band's fault.

P.S. Tommy, where in "Breaker" does it clip? On the completely awesome guitar solo?

That would be such a fun album.

Clipping is like the audio equivalent of overexposing film.

ANYBODY BUT THE ONE THEY HAD + Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

For all the sheer awesomeness his work embodied, his producer was absolute piss.

Re: Albini / BSS: I think this would be awesome.  That band is capable of writing amazing songs, and hides behind Newfeld's production WAY too much.  Esp. now that they've all come into their own so much as musicians (Justin Peroff is a seriously awesome drummer.... it's been amazing to watch him develop his own variant of John McEntire-style drumming).  Agreed that Newfeld's production is a huge part of their sound, but I'd love to hear them break out of that for at least one record.

I like the self titled album better than You Forgot It In People mainly because of the production. It's so thick and almost overwhelming but it's done so well that it works. Then again, I'm probably the only person who prefers the album version of 'Major Label Debut' over the outtake/b-side/whatever "fast" version.

Quote from: Steve Albini
Engineers tell jokes about producers the way people back in Montana tell jokes about North Dakotans. (How many producers does it take to change a light bulb? "Hmmm. I don't know. What do you think?" Why did the producer cross the road? "Because that's the way the Beatles did it, man.") That's why few self-respecting engineers will allow themselves to be called "producers."
