Just saw them last night in Philly and hot damn was it a good show. Tons of energy, a bunch of new songs, and great spoonyness in general. It was a lot of fun. Spoon is another one of those bands who, while quite good on album, are a lot better live. Any one else looking forward to the new album? Any fans and/or haters?
-
I think it's due out in June. While it has an absolutly horrible name ("Ga Ga Ga Ga"), the four or five new songs they played last night were very good. Nothing too new or different but they typical Spoon and that's certainly not a bad thing.
-
I love Spoon. All their albums are quite different, but still sound like the work of one band--although the last one (Gimme Fiction) felt like a summation of everything up to that point. I still say Britt Daniels looks like Gary Busey, or maybe his son.
-
Ga Ga Ga Ga? My entire body just cringed.
That being said, I'm pretty excited for the new album. Haven't had a chance to see Spoon live but I'd definitely like to. Britt Daniels is a foxy foxy man.
-
Five "Ga"s actually. The track titles are even better. And no, none of them are spelled incorrectly.
1. "Don't Make Me a Target"
2. "The Ghost of You Lingers"
3. "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb"
4. "Don't You Evah"
5. "Rhthm and Soul"
6. "Eddie's Ragga"
7. "The Underdog"
8. "My Little Japanese Cigarette Case"
9. "Finer Feelings"
10. "Black Like Me"
Anyways, I really love Spoon. Can't wait for this new one.

Christ, the album and song titles sound more like a Fiery Furnaces album.
-
Maybe tracks six and eight. I would really enjoy hearing a Fiery Furnaces track titled "Black Like Me" though.
-
I've gotta say, the few Spoon songs I've heard I've found to be really dull.
-
I thought the same thing the first few times I listened to Spoon. I was like "this just sort of sounds like everything and nothing distinguishes it" but after awhile the songwriting and clever turns of melody and whatnot won me over. In the same way that every year or three a really great singer/songwriter comes out and uses the same tools as singer/songwriters from the 60s and 70s to create something that feels fresh and familiar at the same time, Spoon regularly release albums that never win album of the year awards but are damn fine listening.
-
I love Spoon. Like, a lot. Gimme Fiction is my personal favorite, I think. Kill the Moonlight is sorta eh, overall, for me. But I've seriously considered making "The Way We Get By" my personal anthem. Damn, I love that song.
I am so looking forward to the new album. And I, too, hate the freakin' name.
-
i saw spoon on 420 for free and i too loved it immensely. they played an awesome show. i think "the way we get by" could be a lot of people's personal anthem. i know i've considered making it mine, heh.
-
I would really recommend "a series of sneaks." It is my favorite spoon album and it tends to get overlooked when people talk about spoon. Great wire meets pavement tunes.
-
Could this possibly be because it doesn't have Me and Mia on it? I think you think it might be.
-
I just heard the underdog over at MFR (http://music.for-robots.com/archives/002062.html) and only really realised who it was 40 seconds in, it's a departure, but a nice one.
It has apparently been leaked, it's not due til the 10th?
i'm downloading now, and will probably buy it when it launches if the underdog is any indication

I can YSI the new recod if anyone wants.
Mostly I actually find spoon to be a pretty boring live band. Not painful or anything, but just, I dunno, very middle ground. I don't have any pressing desire to see them live again, at the very least.
that said, the new album is very good, though most of the songs sound just like Gimme Fiction.
-
cant wait to get this album. and hopin they come by MD besides the Virgin Fest. dont feel like paying ungodly ammounts of money just to see 1 band hehe
-
I am going to agree with Dirk Hopeless here. They are not a very good live band, they play their songs pretty well and in a very proffesional manner, the keyboard player is quite good looking, but the stagecraft was nil and it was really not different from listening to the albums while standing and surrounded by people.

Next time he changes his name you'll regret typing this.
-
oh man the keyboard player is SO goodlooking. I pretty much stared at him through thewhole show.
-
I have not seen the keyboard player, nor spoon live
the one thing that strikes me about this album, is that it's funner than gimme fiction, though still similar overall.
the one word to describe gimme fiction would be stylish, especially I turn my camera on, most stylinest song ever

I agree with this statement. Except Don't You Evah totally trumps I Turn My Camera On in stlye points.

I really don't mind buying another CD that sounds like "Gimme Fiction"
I'm such a music junkie... I can't afford food anymore

Spoon sure went from "painfully dull" to "actually rather good" quite fast. I remember thinking they were easily the lamest band on Matador (yes, including Bullet LaVolta) in the mid-90s. Now I think they're decent.
-
Even if it were true that Gax5 sounds like Gimme Fiction (and there is enough to distinguish the two, for one thing I don't remember any Flamenco guitar in Gimme Fiction), that would mean having two similar thoroughly kick-ass albums. How could that be a bad thing?
Some bands disappoint when they fail to progress (The Shins for instance). But with Spoon, their sound is varied enough to begin with (excluding Britt Daniel's voice) that I don't see myself getting bored.
-
The new album is now streaming at http://gagagagaga.net
It shows lyrical similarities to "GImme Fiction," but it loses the poppiness to a decent alt/rock motif.
