Title: Do you get this as much as I am?
Post by: ImADimetrodon on 29 Apr 2007, 03:04
I like to think that I have a good taste in music but all my friends think that my music is gay and lacking balls. Like the stuff I listen mostly is Sufjan, Sigur Ros, The Unicorns, Ensifurem, Angra, Sonata Arctica, of Montreal, AiH, and other things....I think that I listed to many already...but the point is that I got tired of that shit so I started to listen to shit that is not so "RAW" and "HARDCORE" like Hilary Duff, and Gwen Stefani plus other things like that. So, I was just wondering if I'm the only one or do I need new friends.

I don't understand what your saying put yeah Sonata Arctica does lack balls. If you want power metal with balls go listen to some Grave Digger or Running Wild.

Pretty much the only person who even remotely shares my taste in music is my ladylove, and even she doesn't like a fair chunk of my favourite bands.
Title: I get it forty times more, plus one!

Whenever I hear kids in stores talking about Dragonforce and the like as "noisy music", I smile to myself knowing that artists like Whitehouse, Merzbow and Masonna, who are total noise artists (imagine tuning in an FM radio, and you're close) exists, and are far louder and noisier. It's human nature, we just have to compete and that is what your friends are doing; just telling you they know of harder music, just like I was thinking back then.

Don't let your friends bug you man, and don't stop being their friend just 'cos of jibes like that! I get total shit from everyone where I work and friends in general for the music I listen to (even though I listen to their music as well as the other artists I like), and I don't let it bother me. If anything, I'm proud of the tunes I decide to inflict upon my ears, be it total noise, any types of metal, a forty minute jazz freakout, tibetan opera or Linkin Park remixes.

Yes, you do need new friends. Not so much because they dislike your taste in music, but rather because they assume that homosexuality or the absence of testicles mark a person as being inferior.

You should never be ashamed for liking music. Music is still music regardless of the genre. Take it for its merits, not for what it represents or what it is.

Although frankly, you liking Hilary Duff is unforgiveable!

But I accepted that I have a love for manufactured pop music as well as gangsta rap (or indeed, rap at all) a few years ago and honestly I've never been more comfortable in myself as a music fan.

Half of my friends like the same bands I do.  The other half have never heard of any of them so I rarely get condescending opinions from them.

If I were to, I'd shrug it off anyway.  If they can't be bothered to invest any energy into discovering new music and are satisifed with whatever the radio and television forcefeeds to them, then their opinions couldn't mean less to me anyway.

I was gonna write something about how you shouldn't let other people's opinions change what you like or let them get to you bla bla, but I'm changing my answer to this:

People always ask why I eject the tape before turning the key when I give them lifts places.

Fuck, if people are in my car, they listen to my music. It kind of pisses me off when other people give me a ride and they ask if what they're listening to is OK for me. That's not being polite, that's just having no balls at all. It's music, it's not a battery hooked up to your testicles.

Yeah, pretty much a rule in my car: If you get a ride from me, expect Eric Clapton, Blues Rock, Instrumental rock, Metal, or underground rap... If they complain, they can walk themselves home...

It is okay for friends to criticize musical tastes if you know they mean no ill-will about it; Usually what you do is when they fire first, you fire back with insults...

Yeah, pretty much a rule in my car: If you get a ride from me, expect Eric Clapton, Blues Rock, Instrumental rock, Metal, or underground rap... If they complain, they can walk themselves home...

I will live by this exact same philosophy when I start driving. First barrier: getting my license. Second barrier: fixing my USB port problems and getting an iPod and a car adaptor kit of some kind. Third barrier: finding anybody who will ride with me in the car ever.

With me you have a selection! Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to The Mission, an Echo & The Bunnymen greatest-hits tape, the B-52's album with "Love Shack" on it, John & Yoko's Double Fantasy, a Good Brothers cassette and a mix tape I made that sounds like you're hearing it through about a dozen walls.

If and when I get a car I want a tape deck, no CD player, no mp3s. I will ask each of my friends to make me a tape and I will listen to them until they sound as murky as Johnny C's mixtape there and the tape deck chews them up and spews little browny-purply string out all over the dashboard.

Yup.

If I actually owned a car, and you got a ride with me in it, you had damn well better like the B-52s, Journey and Boston.

Because that is all you would be getting.

I have fond memories of driving around in my friend's car on summer days, listening to an ex-library tape of The Jesus and Mary Chain through one speaker of a completely fucked tape deck that would make everything sound like it was recorded underwater.

Hey...my favorite band is Queen...that's pretty gay.  My favorite current band is The Killers (oh, fuck you), who aren't exactly  hardcore, plus they have...a paucity of male fans.

I hate most hard rock (except Queen), though.  It usually seems repetitive and uninspired.

Also...tense agreement.  Just, for future reference.

Gah, just edited my post to say the same thing (in a completely different way).
Title: Re: Do you get this as much as I am?
Post by: jimbunny on 29 Apr 2007, 18:22
To phrase it better, it should read: "Do you get this as much as I do?"

It could also read: "Do you get this as much as I am getting this?"

The way it is, the tense doesn't strictly agree (simple present paralleled with present progressive), so it is slightly awkward. Both simple present and present progressive can communicate repeated action over time, but simple present does not communicate accumulated action (as the word "much" implies) up to the present moment. It ends up being close enough, just not very elegant.

Your mum just doesn't look good in italics! And besides, what's wrong with a little American Cultural Imperialism? Everyone's doing it, man.

I am kind of sorry I took this thread down that road though. I'm sure your mother is a wonderful woman. Also Joanna Newsom. Can we go back to talking about tapes in cars now?

I think it is kind of great when you drive around with only one tape in the car, and you get so sick of all the songs on it but you keep on playing it over and over anyway, and it becomes like your soundtrack to the season or the week or whatever you're doing and the music becomes bonded to it in your mind. Then whenever you hear the songs in another context you get whisked back to that time and place.

This is one reason why roadtrips are awesome.

somebody should make a Tapes 'n Tapes joke here
Title: Re: Do you get this as much as I am?
Post by: Gryff on 29 Apr 2007, 19:51
Another reason why roadtrips are awesome: the long stretches of silence punctuated by little bursts of conversation, wherein you contemplate the scenery or appreciate the music that's playing, or you just be zen/vacant. It's not something you get to do often with friends, just being quiet together, and I find it really nice.
Title: Re: Do you get this as much as I am?
Post by: Inlander on 29 Apr 2007, 20:02
My brother and I once drove up to Noosa from Canberra. (This is a trip that is measured in days.) The car we were in had no C.D. player and we didn't have enough tapes to last us the length of the journey, so we got my C.D. player/radio/tape deck thingummy and strapped it onto the back seat using the seat-belts there. Then we turned it up loud and we drove.

Well, he drove.
Title: Re: Do you get this as much as I am?
Post by: BrittanyMarie on 29 Apr 2007, 23:06
I usually drive with my iPod, and if there is a car next to me at a red light blasting crappy crunk beatz, I will-just to be an asshole-put on the Liars' They Were Wrong So I Drowned and blast it as much as my factory speakers will allow, and then turn and smile at them. It creeps most people out. Though lately I've been leaving it at home, so I've only got a Tom Waits bootleg, in which case I'll play pasties and a g-string and try to waggle my eyebrows at them.

But really, who cares if your friends don't listen to the same things as you do? People have different tastes and that's A-OK with me. My best friends like what I consider to be crappy music but they are super rad people. I do have friends though who like the same music as me, and that's cool too. I've made friends because of band t-shirts I own (my advisor, for one) and it is pretty nice being able to talk about Calvin Johnson's new record, or how badass the song Pissing on a Panda is. SUM: Friends are pretty cool! "Friends" who shit on your taste in anything suck.

Post by: Inlander on 29 Apr 2007, 23:09
You know what's annoying? When you're on a road trip with friends, and they've been playing their music all day, and you're getting a bit sick of it, so you politely ask if they can put on one of your C.D.s, just for a change. And they say "Sure, okay" and they put it on - and then they turn it down really quiet so that nobody can hear it.

This is why I like to drive places. I am not an asshole and will turn off music if asked, and I make sure my friends know that. I do not hold them captive.

Not one of my friends extends this courtesy to me, except for the ones whose tastes I actually appreciate.

What the fuck? Not subjecting my friends to shit I know they hate when I'm giving them lifts places has nothing to do with having balls or not. Isn't it better for everyone if I play something we all like?

The awesome thing about tapes is that with not much effort at all you can put anything you damn well want on them, then just tape over them when you want something else on there. Tapes are the most fun music format ever.

The awesome thing about tapes is that with not much effort at all you can put anything you damn well want on them, then just tape over them when you want something else on there. Tapes are the most fun music format ever.

only issue here is that my tape player, when recording, only records through the left channel. the right channel is pretty much dead silence with the exception of a faint sound in the distance.

Basically I'm still stuck with the Misfits, Run DMC and a Cure remix album

Basically, yes, i do get this a lot. What really annoys me is that most of the people that tell me this are just falling prey to the "if it's indie, it is shitty disposable music" fashion, i'm positively sure they have never actually heard more than two songs by bands i like.

To be fair though, most of them listen to music i consider crappy anyways.

As a side note - Keeping your music on when you are driving people somewhere is fine. Having it up stupidly loud isn't (in my opinion).

Mind you, this comes from the fact my Mum always refused to turn her music down. I had to get car rides with her for the better half of a year. I now for some reason have tinnitus and a lowered hearing in my left ear. *shrug*

I walk to work every day, which means i have to walk down the street that passes infront of my school.  This means i'll be walking along, when i am suddenly thrown from my feet into the front yard of a house, by somebody's bass as they drive by.  So when i get my lisence, i'm going to put all the hardcore punk and metal stuff i can find on my mp3 player, and blast it as loud as i can without blowing my already shitty sound system, and headbang when stopped.

This also means, when i can give people rides, they will be harassed with Bear vs. Shark or Alexisonfire, or whatever kind of stuff i could be liking at the moment, which varies too.  So they could be lucky and get some Sufjan or Broken Social Scene or Explosions in the Sky.  Because in my car it's, you listen to my music and quit your bitching, or you can walk your lethargic ass.

It's commonplace to have someone insult your music.  Hell, people do so to me every day.  My girlfriend hates most of my music, and it rather irritates me how she makes generalizations about it, then tells me not to make generalizations about the kind of stuff she listens to, or rap.  Also, most of my friends either listen to classic rock, or rap, or mainstream.  I do however have friends with good taste.

I'm really bad with this kind of thing, because, since i've started my account on these forums, i've developed a music Nazism complex sort of thing, so if anyone says my music sucks, without proper reasoning, then i will generally get kind of pissed.  So now, a couple of my friends say "X band that i listen to sucks.  Yeah, what now?" just to piss me off and see me rant.

You guys are missing the basic principle of friendship here.

What you are like is not important.

Your worth as an individual and a human being is entirely determined by what you like.

I do not care if you fucking washed Mother Teresa's feet, if you're a Yellowcard fan you are still not someone I want to associate with. You make your bed when you buy your albums, and if you aren't willing to lie in it, well you shouldn't have sheets made up of Fall Out Boy Album Covers.

Dude, my friends and I, with our many and varied types of music, fight about music all the time.

Frankly, it's one of our favorite things to do.  (Myself and another friend being music majors probably helps with that...)

But the main point is, from my experience, friends like to give each other sh**.  I'm sure you can get 'em back with something
good, no?
